Boeing B-1 Bomber Completes 10,000th Combat Mission



OKLAHOMA CITY, Feb. 27, 2012 -- The Boeing [NYSE: BA] B-1 bomber aircraft has completed its 10,000th combat mission. The heavy bomber entered service with the U.S. Air Force on June 29, 1985, and has been in nearly continuous combat for the past 10 years. The milestone mission took off from a base in Southwest Asia and was flown in support of operations over Afghanistan before returning to base.

"The B-1 brings tremendous flexibility to our nation's defense," said Lt. Col. Alejandro Gomez, mission team lead. "In any mission, the B-1 has the ability to loiter, dash, positively identify targets, show force, and strike targets precisely. Whatever our aircrews are asked to do, they can perform with this aircraft."

B-1 crews in Southwest Asia fly a variety of missions, including close air support for troops on the ground, giving them cover and alerting them to threats they cannot see. On-site maintainers keep the fleet ready to fly.

"10,000 conventional combat missions for a relatively small fleet of 66 B-1s is a major milestone and a testament to the men and women who built, sustain and modernize the fleet, including the U.S. Air Force, Boeing and our subcontractors," said Rick Greenwell, Boeing B-1 program director. "We continue to draw on expertise and experience from across Boeing to enhance our support of this amazing aircraft."

The B-1 bomber has advanced over the years as it is modified for current needs. The aircraft began as a nuclear bomber and moved into a solely conventional role in the 1990s. It carries the largest payload in the Air Force's long-range bomber fleet -- during Operation Iraqi Freedom, it dropped 40 percent of all weapons while flying only 5 percent of the sorties.

Today's B-1 can carry a mixed load of weapons in each of its three bays. Its long range allows it to base far from the conflict and loiter unrefueled for long periods. Its swept wings allow it to fly fast, slow, low or high as the situation demands. With only four crewmembers required, missions can rapidly be adjusted in flight to keep up with adversaries. The radar and targeting pod can be used for positive target identification and the aircraft can employ a variety of other weapons, including Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAMs), Laser JDAMs, Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles-Extended Range, and BLU-129 warheads.

"The B-1 fleet and crews have readily adapted to an ever-changing environment to accomplish this 10,000th combat sortie milestone," said Greenwell. "This aircraft has proven its ability to continue to evolve and be effective well into the future."

EVERETT, Wash., Feb. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) celebrated a major achievement in the effort to create a Queen of the Skies for the 21st Century, delivering the first 747-8 Intercontinental VIP airplane to an undisclosed customer. The airplane, which was delivered with a minimal interior, will enter service in 2014 after its VIP interior is installed.

"The 747 is the most iconic airplane in the world, and I know customers are going to love what we've done to enhance its performance. The VIP version of the 747-8 Intercontinental provides a cabin with 4,786 square feet (444.6 square meters). This 747-8 VIP will include Greenpoint Technologies' Aeroloft, located above the main cabin between the upper deck and tail of the 747-8 VIP, giving the airplane 393 square feet (36.5 square meters) of additional cabin space. The Aeroloft will be installed by Boeing Global Transport & Executive Systems (GTES) in Wichita, Kan.

With Aeroloft, the VIP-configured 747-8 offers a total of 5,179 square feet (481.1 square meters) of cabin space, can carry 100 passengers and has a range of about 8,840 nautical miles (16,372 km). It provides double-digit improvements in fuel burn and emissions over the 747-400, and is 30 percent more quiet. With a normal cruise speed of Mach 0.86, it is the fastest large commercial jet.

The 747-8 VIP jet is the only large airplane in its class that fits today's airport infrastructure, giving its owners the flexibility to fly to more destinations. Building on the current 747's capability to fly into most airports worldwide, the 747-8 VIP uses the same pilot type ratings, services and most ground support equipment.

To date, undisclosed customers have ordered nine 747-8 VIP airplanes.

El Aeropuerto de Girona-Costa Brava ha iniciado los trabajos de mejora de la plataforma de aeronaves para optimizar el espacio y adecuarlo a las aeronaves de aviación general y corporativa. Con la nueva señalización horizontal que se está pintando, el aeropuerto dispondrá de 21 nuevas posiciones de estacionamiento para aeronaves pequeñas. En concreto, se han diseñado 9 posiciones para aviones tipo jet, 8 posiciones para aeronaves ligeras y 4 para helicópteros. Esta zona de la plataforma anteriormente albergaba 4 stands para Boeing 737. Los trabajos de adecuación de la señalización horizontal finalizarán a principios del mes de marzo.

INVESTIGADORES DE LA UPM ANALIZAN LA TURBULENCIA CON NUEVAS CAPACIDADES COMPUTACIONALES

La simulación de gran cantidad de datos con potentes ordenadores es el fundamento del proyecto Multiflow que se desarrollará en los próximos cinco años en la ETSI Aeronáuticos de la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid.

Javier Jiménez Sendín, catedrático de la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid y experto en turbulencia a nivel internacional, dirige el equipo investigador de este proyecto, una nueva propuesta para entender la física del
fenómeno de la turbulencia.

Multiflow, acrónimo de Multiscale Dynamics of Turbulent Flows, es un proyecto de investigación básica con cinco años de duración que se encuentra en sus comienzos, organizando los recursos humanos (tres profesores, dos postdoctorados y entre cuatro y seis estudiantes de doctorado) y reforzando la infraestructura necesaria. Perteneciente al séptimo Programa Marco de la Unión Europea, ya ha recibido un reconocimiento de importancia por parte de la comunidad científica, el Advanced Grant del Consejo Europeo de Investigación (ERC, en inglés), que impulsa la excelencia en la investigación y que este año han recibido 266 científicos senior de élite, entre los que se encuentra el profesor Jiménez Sendín, al objeto de continuar sus indagaciones y experimentaciones.

“En los últimos años han aparecido nuevos datos sobre el problema de la turbulencia especialmente debido a los avances en supercomputación y que permite dar un vuelco al estudio del fenómeno, atascado desde 1850, a pesar de que un 10% de la energía que se gasta en el mundo se disipa en turbulencia cerca de las paredes, tanto en vehículos como Notas de prensaen tuberías”, expone Jiménez Sendín, quien considera por ello este momento como “clave” para continuar los estudios que ya han hecho en esta área.

Los ordenadores propios con capacidad de almacenamiento de cientos de Terabytes y el acceso a los grandes ordenadores de Europa para la simulación inician una etapa marcada por la utilización de métodos multiescala a la resolución de las ecuaciones implicadas. La primera parte del proyecto es trabajo analítico, se trata de observar cómo la energía se inyecta en la turbulencia y luego ver cómo se distribuye. La aplicación
industrial de los resultados vendrá marcada por dar respuesta a cómo se puede calcular y predecir la turbulencia y cómo se puede controlar, tanto para amortiguarla como para incrementarla.

Más allá de la aeronáutica
Para hacerlo fácilmente entendible el catedrático de la ETSI Aeronáuticos explica que “hay unas mil veces más remolinos en la estela de un Airbus que gente en el mundo. A los ingenieros nos interesa saber el resultado de todo ese barullo con un error menor del 1%”. Aproximadamente la mitad del coste energético del avión está en la resistencia de la fricción con el aire, que se da en la turbulencia cercana a la pared, denominada capa límite. “Entenderlo, calcularlo y controlarlo –continúa Jiménez Sendín– supondría una
reducción de costes, pero también de gasto energético y de contaminación medioambiental y acústica”.
Si bien la turbulencia del aire es una desventaja en el vuelo porque incrementa la resistencia aerodinámica,
también es cierto que gracias a la turbulencia se mezcla más rápidamente el aire con el combustible en el motor del avión. Por tanto, el objetivo final es entender el fenómeno para poder manejarlo según corresponda en cada caso. Además ese conocimiento no es sólo un problema aeronáutico. En 2011 Iberia batió el récord de producción en operaciones especiales o vuelos contratados al margen de su operación regular. Una tendencia positiva que continúa este año, habiéndose alcanzado ya en los primeros dos meses del año un volumen de contratación superior a la cifra lograda en 2011.

 

Un vuelo fletado por la agencia Savitur de Málaga y con destino a Tel Aviv ha sido una de las últimas operaciones realizadas por Iberia  para trasladar 141 pasajeros a Tierra Santa.

 

Iberia también traslada durante la presente liga y de forma habitual al Málaga Club de fútbol, equipo con el que suscribió un importante acuerdo para la temporada 2011-2012.

 

Iberia será, asimismo, la compañía que tenga el privilegio de transportar a la Selección Española de Fútbol a Polonia y Ucrania para participar el próximo mes de junio en la Eurocopa 2012.

¿Quién quiere ir a Hawaii 120 días (gastos pagados) y con comida de astronauta?

En él se simularán la vida y las condiciones de trabajo de los astronautas en una misión interplanetaria y comparará dos tipos de sistemas de alimentación tan a fondo como sea posible en el marco de una misión a Marte ficticia: Aquel que permita (dentro de las limitaciones) “cocinar” a la tripulación; frente a aquel otro sistema en el que la tripulación se alimente a partir de productos ya preparados.

Requisitos:

  • Ser graduado universitario en ingeniería, ciencias biológicas, física, matemáticas o informática.
  • Tener experiencia profesional de al menos tres años tras la obtención del grado universitario.
  • Demostrar capacidad para pasar un examen de vuelo de la clase 2
  • No tener antecedentes de cirugía de las vías respiratorias superiores, rinoplastia, sinusitis crónica o rinitis crónica.
  • Poseer una condición médica y psicológica que posibilite la participación en el estudio.
  • Tener la voluntad y la capacidad de comer una amplia variedad de alimentos.
  • Poseer un sentido del gusto y olfato normales.
  • Ser “no fumador” al menos desde 24 meses atrás.
  • Demostrar un gran interés en la exploración espacial.
  • Tener un nivel de inglés fluido oral y escrito.
  • Disponibilidad y voluntad para participar en los talleres previos a las misiones simuladas.

UNVEX 12 cerrará 3 días de conferencias y exposiciones con una demostración en AirMarugán

Como cierre final del programa de UNVEX'12, tras tres días de Conferencias y Exposición, se realizará una jornada de exhibiciones de vehículos aéreos y terrestres.

La jornada de demostraciones tendrá lugar en Air Marugán, situado en la provincia de Segovia, en un entorno ideal para la práctica del vuelo.

Las exhibiciones tendrán como objetivo mostrar a profesionales, tecnólogos y usuarios las capacidades de estos vehículos de forma práctica.

Un circuito cerrado de TV permitirá observar en grandes pantallas la evolución de las plataformas, así como las imágenes que está trasmitiendo, siempre que sea posible. El acto será conducido un locutor que acompañado de un representante de la compañiacute;a exhibidora detallará la evolución y misiones que está realizando, a través de la megafonía.

En general se trata de crear una atmósfera profesional pero a la vez entretenida que fomente al encuentro entre los participantes. Traslados descansos y almuerzo serán momentos de intercambiar opinión.

El sector de los Sistemas No Tripulados

El mercado mundial de los Sistemas No Tripulados (US) (1) ha crecido notablemente en los últimos años y va a seguir creciendo a un ritmo del 5,5% anual. Hoy día, 50 países hacen uso de estos sistemas, siendo el principal usuario Estados Unidos que todavía representa un 58% del mercado mundial. Países como China, Rusia, India o Brasil están empezando a tener un papel protagonista en la materia, así como Europa Occidental que se augura será una región clave.

En estos momentos, Francia y Reino Unido representan las ¾ del negocio en la UE pero las previsiones apuntan a que España ocupa una buena posición y tendrá oportunidades de negocio muy importantes.

En cuanto a la tendencia del mercado, respecto a los sistemas no tripulados navales y terrestres, el analista de IHS Jane's, Derrick Maple ha confirmado el desarrollo creciente de los primeros, mientras que el mercado de los terrestres se ha estabilizado debido al gran volumen de sistemas en el mercado hoy día (28.000 frente a los 14.600 aéreos y 1.400 navales). En el ámbito de las aeronaves no tripuladas (UAV), se prevé que la demanda mundial llegue a duplicarse en los próximos diez años.

EASA Type Certificate for Sukhoi Superjet 100 is handed over to Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company

Patrick Goudou, Executive Director of European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) handed over today the EASA Type Certificate for the Sukhoi Superjet 100 (RRJ-95B) to the Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company (SCAC) during the ceremony held at the headquarters of the Interstate Aviation Committee in Moscow. The representatives of the Russian Government, European and Russian Aviation Authorities, aircraft industry were present.

EASA issued Type Certificate A-176 for the Sukhoi Superjet 100 (RRJ-95B) on February 3, 2012. The certificate recognizes that the SSJ100 aircraft complies with EASA strict airworthiness and environmental requirements. The validation allows European airlines and carriers operating in countries using EASA regulations as reference standard, accept and operate the SSJ100 (RRJ-95B) aircraft. The Sukhoi Superjet 100 represents the first Russian passenger aircraft certified according to EASA CS-25.

This EASA certificate obtainment became the result of vast certification campaign performed by EASA, IAC AR and SCAC in association with Certification centers, Alenia Aermacchi (former Alenia Aeronautica) and key aircraft systems suppliers.

European validation was launched after application for IAC AR certification in 2004 and went through four different phases, simultaneously with the Certification process with Russian Certification Authorities: Familiarization, Certification Programs Agreement, Compliance Determination and Final Project Report. The European Authority first got familiarized with the aircraft, then deeply examined the aircraft technical characteristics and, received proof of its performance and safety, and as the result the EASA Type Certificate was issued.

The European validation program included several dedicated flight and ground tests. In particular the EASA pilots went through numerous sessions on the “electronics bird” (SSJ100 integrated simulator) and participated in 45 certification flights (total duration about 70 flight hours) in order to prove the safety and in-flight performance of the SSJ100 aircraft in any situation. The ground tests covered, among others, the ultimate pressure load of the fuselage, the bird strike of the front upper cockpit panel, the broken-tire strike of the lower hatch cover of the wing fuel tank and the fire-resistance of the composite flap. In the frame of ten working groups (“Panels”) 84 Certification Review Items and 60 Certification Action Items were analyzed, substantiated and agreed while more than 500 actions and questions received from the Authorities were timely and satisfactory closed.

The European certification is key milestone in getting worldwide recognition of our aircraft which will open up new perspectives for the Sukhoi Superjet 100 in the international markets. Over the past year, the program has completed key milestones in support of the design and development phase on or ahead of schedule, and is now preparing for a Preliminary Design Review (PDR) in March.

Since receiving the contract on Feb. 24, 2011, the Boeing KC-46 team has completed several major milestones, including a System Requirements Review, Integrated Baseline Review, 767-2C PDR, and Firm Configuration Reviews for the 767-2C and the KC-46A Tanker.

"I'm very proud of our joint team," said Maureen Dougherty, Boeing KC-46 Tanker vice president and program manager. "We're drawing on the best of Boeing's industry-leading commercial airplane and defense expertise as we design and develop the KC-46A, which is a next-generation derivative aircraft. We remain on plan to deliver the first 18 combat-ready tankers by 2017."

The PDR, which will ensure that Boeing's design meets system requirements, will be followed by a Critical Design Review (CDR) in the third quarter of 2013. The CDR determines that the design of the KC-46A is mature and ready to proceed to the manufacturing phase of the program.

Boeing will build 179 next-generation aerial refueling tanker aircraft that will begin to replace the Air Force's fleet of 416 KC-135 tankers. Based on the proven Boeing 767 commercial airplane, the KC-46A tanker is a widebody, multi-mission aircraft updated with the latest and most advanced technology to meet the demanding mission requirements of the future, including a digital flight deck featuring Boeing 787 Dreamliner electronic displays and a flight control design philosophy that places aircrews in command to maximize combat maneuverability. The KC-46A also features a modernized KC-10 boom with a fly-by-wire control system, and a refueling envelope and fuel offload rate that is greater than the KC-135 it will replace.

Lockheed Martin F-35 Flight Test And Production Progress Report

FORT WORTH, Texas, Feb. 23, 2012 -- Lockheed Martin's [NYSE: LMT] F-35 program continues to build on its 2011 flight test success. For 2012, the baseline F-35 System Development and Demonstration (SDD) flight test plan calls for the accumulation of 1,001 test flights and 7,873 test points. However, growth in test point requirements throughout the year is anticipated, and the plan will be adjusted as needed.

As of Feb. 20, the F-35 Lightning II 5th Generation multirole fighter had conducted 114 flight tests and achieved 773 test points. A portion of the earned test points came from work added to the flight test baseline plan. Lockheed Martin has delivered three F-35s to the Department of Defense (DOD) year to date.

Since Jan. 1, the F-35 program accomplished several flight test and production milestones:
  • On Jan. 9, AF-4, an F-35A Conventional Takeoff and Landing (CTOL) test aircraft, reached the highest altitude to date in an F-35; 43,000 feet Mean Sea Level (MSL).
  • Lockheed Martin ferried the first two production model F-35B Short Takeoff and Vertical Landing (STOVL) aircraft to the U.S. Marine Corps on Jan. 11. The aircraft, known as BF-6 and BF-8, are now assigned to the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing's Marine Fighter/Attack Training Squadron 501 residing with the host 33d Fighter Wing at Eglin Air Force Base (AFB), Fla.
  • Demonstrating the ongoing maturation of the F-35 integrated sensor suite, AF-3, an F-35A CTOL test jet, completed the first low Distributed Aperture System (DAS) approach on Jan. 17.
  • On Jan. 18, the first night flight in the history of the Lockheed Martin F-35 program was completed at Edwards AFB, Calif. Piloted by Lockheed Martin test pilot Mark Ward, AF-6, an F-35A CTOL test jet, took off at 5:05 p.m. PST and landed after sunset at 6:22 p.m.
  • With the ferry flight of BF-7, an F-35B STOVL, Eglin AFB, Fla., became home of the largest F-35 fleet in the DOD on Jan. 19. BF-7 was the 23rd F-35 Lightning II delivered to the DOD.
  • On Jan. 20, citing the tremendous progress the F-35B STOVL variant made in 2011, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta rescinded probation for the F-35B, almost a full year ahead of schedule.
  • The F-35 SDD fleet including AA-1, the original test aircraft, crossed the 2,500 flight hour threshold on Jan. 25.
  • On Feb. 16 at Edwards AFB, Calif., AF-1, an F-35A CTOL test jet, flew the first external weapons test mission in program history.

Cumulative flight test activity totals for 2012 through Feb. 20 are provided below:
  • F-35A CTOL jets have flown 46 times.
  • F-35B STOVL aircraft have completed 45 flights.
  • F-35C Carrier Variant (CV) jets have flown 23 times.

The F-35A is the conventional takeoff and landing version of the Joint Strike Fighter, intended primarily for the U.S. Air Force short range fighter role. These single-seat single-engine fifth-generation fighters are designed to carry out air defense, ground attack, and recon missions. February 16, 2012 marked the first flight of the F-35A carrying an external load of two Raytheon AIM-9X Sidewinder missiles. The F-35A also had four additional weapons pylons attached each of which can carry 2000-pound air-to-ground weapons.

Boeing and US Air Force Mark Delivery of 1st Re-winged A-10 Thunderbolt II

HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah, Feb. 16, 2012 -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and the U.S. Air Force on Feb. 15 celebrated the rollout of the first re-winged A-10 Thunderbolt II in a ceremony at Hill Air Force Base. Boeing is under contract with the Air Force to deliver 233 wing sets through 2018.

"This enhanced wing assembly will give the A-10 new strength and a new foundation for its continued service into 2040," said Mark Bass, Maintenance, Modifications & Upgrades vice president and general manager for Boeing Defense, Space & Security. "Boeing remains a committed partner in ensuring the A-10 continues to be a ready, reliable and viable weapon system for the U.S. Air Force."

The A-10 wing replacement program is an example of Boeing's continued expansion into non-Boeing platform work. The wing sets are produced at the company's production facility in Macon, Ga., with partner Korean Aerospace Industries. They are delivered to the Air Force customer at the Ogden Air Logistics Center.

Boeing delivered the first A-10 wing set to the Air Force in March 2011. After mating to the aircraft and validation and verification of the wing, Air Force pilots flew the aircraft on its first flight in November.

The A350 XWB's new engine – the Rolls-Royce Trent XWB – has successfully made its maiden flight aboard Airbus' dedicated A380 "Flying-Test-Bed" aircraft. The aircraft took off from Airbus facilities in Toulouse and performed a flight of more than five hours during which the engine covered a wide range of power settings at altitudes up to 43,000ft. The aircraft handling qualities were evaluated from low speeds to Mach 0.9. The engine not only operated flawlessly, but also demonstrated its new-generation fuel efficiency and low noise.

The Trent XWB development engine, specially fitted with test sensors to measure hundreds of parameters, was mounted on the A380's inner left engine pylon, replacing one of the aircraft's Trent 900 engines. The crew on board this first flight were: Airbus Experimental test pilots Terry Lutz and Frank Chapman; Experimental Test Flight Engineer Pascal Verneau; and Flight Test Engineers Emanuele Costanzo and Tuan Do.

"The A350 XWB's engine performed excellently during its first flight-test, just as we expected," said Charles Champion, Executive Vice President of Engineering at Airbus. "This is a promising start to the Trent XWB's flight-test programme which will ensure a thorough real-life testing of the engine, nacelle and its systems." He adds: "This will allow for a high level of powerplant integration, maturity and reliability to be achieved by the time it flies on the first A350 XWB aircraft."

Commencing around one year prior to the A350 XWB's first flight, this engine flight-test programme is scheduled to accumulate around 175 flight hours – some three times more airborne flying hours than on previous programmes. This will be accomplished over a seven month period and will include hot weather as well as icing condition testing campaigns. It will also test the advanced nacelle and thrust reverser system provided by Goodrich.

The overall objective of these flight-tests is the early and systematic validation of all performance aspects of the engine and also the associated systems. In turn, this will contribute to significantly 'de-risking' the A350 XWB's development well ahead of entry-into-service. The first results of this flight-test campaign are expected this summer.
