LOT Boeing Dreamliner Heads for Warsaw Minus Passengers - Bloomberg

A Boeing Co. (BA) 787 operated by LOT Polish Airlines SA headed for Warsaw minus its passengers after the failure of a system that identifies planes to air-traffic controllers forced an unscheduled landing in Iceland yesterday.
The flight from Toronto was grounded at Keflavik airport near Reykjavik after being denied permission to enter Norwegian airspace due to the defect. Two other planes were sent to collect passengers and the stricken Dreamliner should resume operations after its arrival in the Polish capital, LOT said.
"That was a minor fault and was fixed," spokeswoman Barbara Pijanowska-Kuras said. "The plane is coming back to Warsaw. It will return to regular operations this afternoon.

Iran unveils killer drone that may really work

After displaying a stealth fighter that was a sort of joke, obsolete missiles as they were new, fake or unrealistic UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles), Tehran may  have finally unveiled something real.
In a ceremony held on Sept. 27, Iran unveiled a modified version of  the "Shahed 129″, capable to carry weapons. In other words the domestic drone (based on the Israeli Hermes 450 model or the Watchkeeper 450 model, but larger than those types), has eventually become a real UCAV (Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle) capable to carry missiles.

Eurocopter teams with CAE to create an approved EC225 helicopter training center in Norway, featuring a Level D flight and mission simulator

CAE and Eurocopter today announced an agreement for an EC225 training facility in Norway, including a CAE 3000 Series Level D flight and mission simulator that will begin operation in 2015 as part of the Eurocopter-approved simulation center.

The center’s new EC225 simulator will provide an unprecedented level of realism for pilot mission training – including flight profiles for the offshore oil and gas sector, search and rescue (SAR) operations and other complex scenarios for which simulation training is ideally suited. The EC-225 simulator will be equipped with a CAE Tropos-6000 visual system and a Eurocopter original simulation package. The joint CAE/Eurocopter announcement was made in London at the U.K. Helitech International exposition.

“CAE is very excited and proud to be named an Approved Simulation Center for Norway. This marks the first time CAE and Eurocopter have announced a collaboration of this type, and it is a positive step for two industry leaders to cooperate to further enhance aviation safety in the helicopter industry,” said Nick Leontidis, CAE Group President, Civil Simulation Products, Training and Services. “We look forward to providing the highest quality flight and mission training in Norway, which is uniquely positioned to serve the oil and gas markets.” Additionally, Eurocopter and its local representative, ØSTNES, intend to quickly extend the new Norway center’s capabilities by installing an AS350 helicopter full-flight simulator at the facility.

"Through our agreement with CAE, we will expand our world-class service and support network,” said Matthieu Louvot, Eurocopter’s Senior Vice President Support & Services.

“We will provide Norway-based customers with pilot training that leverages the safest and most innovative technologies, and is closer to their bases of operation."

Eurocopter reinforces its capabilities in the U.S. with the installation of an AS350 assembly line

Beginning in 2014, Eurocopter will install the necessary industrial capabilities to upgrade the American Eurocopter plant in Columbus, Mississippi, to a final assembly and test site for Eurocopter AS350 helicopters, the top-selling civil helicopter in the U.S. market.

The plan was developed with two main objectives in mind: First, as a way to offset the impact of the reduction in local production of UH-72A Lakota helicopters and second, to help provide a boost to sales in the U.S. market, especially with government and law enforcement agencies.

“North America is the largest light helicopter market in the world for Eurocopter, and this new assembly line supports our industrial strategy by manufacturing the preferred AS350 ‘Made in the USA’ in close proximity to our customers,” said Joseph Saporito, Executive Vice President of the Global Supply Chain for Eurocopter. “This decision further supports our investments that have developed reliable and efficient local industrial capabilities in a market with strong expected growth.”

The plan calls for the Columbus plant to become a final AS350 assembly and test site using parts produced by Eurocopter and its suppliers, in addition to the continued production and retrofit of UH-72A Lakotas for the U.S. Army, other federal agencies and foreign military customers.

“I am extremely happy to be able to announce we will be able to maintain and expand the Columbus plant’s operations and retain our skilled and dedicated workers,” said American Eurocopter President and CEO Marc Paganini. “Our teams in Mississippi have done a superb job of producing the Lakota for the Army and we want to put their expertise to work building helicopters for the civil market in the U.S.” Preparations will begin almost immediately, with the final assembly line scheduled to begin production in the fourth quarter of 2014. Operations are set to expand in 2015 and the plant will produce up to 60 additional helicopters annually by 2016.

The Columbus plant ? American Eurocopter’s second location in addition to its headquarters in Grand Prairie, Texas ? is currently responsible for both the assembly and testing of the highly successful UH-72A Lakota aircraft, for which more than 280 aircraft have been delivered on budget and on or ahead of schedule. Its teams also handle the partial assembly of the AS350 from kits for certification flight tests before sending the aircraft to completion centers, where they are installed with customer-specified interiors, instrumentation and special equipment.

Eurocopter’s international development allows the Group to better meet its customers’ needs by remaining in close proximity, no matter where they are in the world. Opportunities that allow, in addition to this proximity, an in-sourcing of high-value business in key markets reinforce the Group’s commitment to creating strong local industrial footholds in both emerging as well as established markets.

Representing nearly 40% of Eurocopter’s worldwide in-service rotorcraft fleet, some 3,549 AS350s are currently flying around the globe – with nearly one quarter of them in the U.S. alone. American Eurocopter delivered 42 new AS350 helicopters in 2012. The AS350 outclasses all other single-engine helicopters for performance, versatility, safety and competitive acquisition and maintenance costs. It is the first choice in the U.S. market for law enforcement agencies and helicopter emergency medical service providers.

About American Eurocopter

American Eurocopter is the U.S. affiliate of Eurocopter, the largest helicopter manufacturer in the world, and a subsidiary of EADS North America Holdings, the North American operations of EADS, a world leader in aerospace, defense and related services. The product line represents the most cost-effective, technologically-advanced helicopters, ranging from light single to heavy twin aircraft, serving all markets and missions. Boeing QF-16 Aerial Target Completes 1st Pilotless Flight

TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla., Sept. 23, 2013 – Boeing [NYSE: BA] and the U.S. Air Force have completed the first unmanned QF-16 Full Scale Aerial Target flight, demonstrating the next generation of combat training and testing.

Two U.S. Air Force test pilots in a ground control station remotely flew the QF-16, which is a retired F-16 jet modified to be an aerial target. The QF-16 mission profile included auto takeoff, a series of simulated maneuvers, supersonic flight, and an auto land, all without a pilot in the cockpit.

“It was a little different to see an F-16 take off without anyone in it, but it was a great flight all the way around,” said Lt. Col. Ryan Inman, Commander, 82nd Aerial Targets Squadron. “Now we have a mission capable, highly sustainable full scale aerial target to take us into the future.”

The milestone flight initiates more operational evaluations, including a live fire test at Holloman Air Force Base, N.M. The Navy, Army and Air Force will ultimately use QF-16s for weapons testing and other training.

Boeing has modified six F-16s into the QF-16 configuration. Low-rate initial production is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter, with first production deliveries in 2015.

Boeing Launches New Maintenance Apps for iPad

LONDON, Sept. 24, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] has made performing routine maintenance and diagnosing aircraft issues faster and easier for airline technicians with a suite of new mobile applications for iPad. With the apps, technicians will have immediate access to manuals, part numbers and other critical information to resolve maintenance issues plane-side and collaborate with co-workers located elsewhere. As a result, airlines can enhance real-time regulatory compliance, reduce flight delays and reduce operational costs.

Boeing worked with several airlines for more than a year on the prototype, incorporating their input to optimize the user interface and maximize utility for line mechanics. Technicians will have instant access to critical information, including the maintenance history of an aircraft, when they need it most. The application suite includes Toolbox Mobile Library, Toolbox Mobile Parts and Maintenance Turn Time.

"Mobile technology is an important aspect of our digital airline strategy, which is to harness the power of information, technology and analytics to create insights that give our customers the Boeing Edge: a competitive advantage in the marketplace," said John Maggiore, director of Fleet and Maintenance Solutions, Boeing Digital Aviation. "Data-driven optimization across flight operations, airspace and maintenance operations is saving aircraft operators millions of dollars in operating costs today. This is an exciting new chapter of that journey."

Features of the new maintenance apps include:
A Toolbox Mobile Library, which will provide technicians access to maintenance documents for instant reference and use, wherever and whenever needed.
Hyperlinks between multiple manuals and airline-created content that will expedite access to critical documents so that users can easily search for documents and information about parts and fault histories.
A Toolbox Mobile Parts app which enables technicians to instantly retrieve information about part availability, including the airline's most current inventory information.
Maintenance Turn Time, which gives technicians a secure connection to collaborate with their colleagues when troubleshooting a maintenance issue. A technician can take a photo of a damaged part, upload it for others to see and annotate and then share information about maintenance issues with their peers in real time. Maintenance Turn Time is available for the iPad, iPhone and a web browser.
The ability to update reference manuals with one tap on the iPad screen. Alaska Airlines technicians estimate that using the apps on a 0.69-pound iPad mini to access critical information will save 4,000 pieces of paper a day.

"We are very excited about the launch of these new products," said Maggiore. "They are a great addition to the Boeing portfolio and will deliver even more value to our customers when used in conjunction with capabilities such as Electronic Logbook, Airplane Health Management and Maintenance Performance Toolbox."

Video: On target: QF-16 flies with an empty cockpit (Video)

Boeing PR

As a pilotless F-16 roared into the sky last week at Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla., members of Boeing’s QF-16 team and the U.S. Air Force celebrated.

The flight represented the first unmanned QF-16 Full Scale Aerial Target flight. Put another way, fighter pilots now have an adversary for which to train against that prepares them like never before.

Two U.S. Air Force test pilots in a ground control station at Tydall remotely flew the QF-16, which is a retired F-16 jet modified to be an aerial target. While in the air, the QF-16 mission included a series of simulated maneuvers, reaching supersonic speeds, returning to base and landing, all without a pilot in the cockpit.

“It was a little different to see it without anyone in it, but it was a great flight all the way around,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Ryan Inman, Commander, 82nd Aerial Targets Squadron. “It’s a replication of current, real world situations and aircraft platforms they can shoot as a target. Now we have a 9G capable, highly sustainable aerial target.”

Prior to the QF-16, the military used a QF-4 aircraft, which was a modification of the F-4 Phantom, a Vietnam-era fighter The modified QF-16 provides pilots a target that performs closer to many jets flying today.

The QF-16s were all retired aircraft. Boeing retrieved them from Davis Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona and restored them for flight.

Next up, live fire testing moves to Holloman Air Force Base, N.M. The military will ultimately use QF-16s for weapons testing and other aerial training.

So far, Boeing has modified six F-16s into the QF-16 configuration.

To see the QF-16 make its first flight, watch the video.

Sequester may force USAF to retire entire fleets of aircraft

Though eliminating single-mission aircraft is the most efficient way to save money while preserving military capability, the problem is politics, Hostage says.

For example, the L-3 MC-12 Project Liberty aircraft has excellent capability — if funding was not an issue, Hostage says. Other single-mission aircraft that might be sacrificed include the Fairchild Republic A-10 Warthog

Dutch JSF Jet Fighter Purchase Gets Green Light After 18 Years | Aviation & Air Force News at DefenceTalk

The Netherlands will go ahead with the purchase of the controversial JSF jet fighter, despite objections, the Telegraaf reports on Tuesday. The decision brings to an end 18 years of political dithering about the wisdom of spending so much money on an aircraft when the defence ministry is struggling to find €1.33bn in cuts, the paper says.
The Netherlands will buy 37 JSF jets which will keep the cost within the €4.5bn special budget set aside for the purpose. They will cost an additional €270m a year to keep in the air, the Telegraaf reports, quoting sources in The Hague.

Turkey must now find a new engine supplier for its first indigenous unmanned aerial vehicle

It looked entirely like any other business takeover between the Chinese and Germans with no relevance to Turkey. But the news that a Chinese group had acquired the troubled German maker of aircraft engines means Turkey must now find a new engine supplier for its first indigenous unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), the Anka.
Turkish officials and the Anka team are now worried that Chinese group Avic International's acquisition of Thielert, a bankrupt German maker of diesel engines for aircraft may further delay the Anka which would otherwise have been powered by Thielert's Centurion engine.
Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) which develops the Anka had ordered the Centurion for a batch of 10 aircraft. Now TAI must look elsewhere to find a new engine to power the Anka.
