Happy 50th Birthday to the Pratt & Whitney PT6 Engine

Happy 50th Birthday to the Pratt & Whitney PT6 Engine
http://feedly.com/k/1fyUJpK

The First Production PT6 in December, 1963. Photo: Pratt & Whitney Canada

Today is the 50th birthday of the first delivery of the legendary Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6 turboprop. That first engine was delivered to Beech Aircraft Company for installation into an aircraft that would become the equally remarkable Beechcraft King Air.

The PT6 had its genesis at what was then the United Aircraft of Canada Limited factory in Longueuil, Quebec. In the mid-1950s, UACL had looked at the market and determined that there was a need for a small, efficient turboprop in the 500 shaft horsepower (SHP) range. They felt there was technology available to replace current radial piston engines that dated back to the 1920s, like the P & W Wasp.

So in 1957, a group of 12 young engineers got together to design a powerplant that was unlike any engine of its time. Turboprops of the day were massive, such as the 4,000 SHP Allison T56 that powered the Lockheed C-130 Hercules, or they were early-generation and inefficient, like the Rolls-Royce Dart that flew on the Vickers Viscount.

The engineering team made design choices that would stand the test of time. They separated the gas generator and the power sections of the turbine. Think of your car – the gas generator in the PT6 is like your engine, and the power section is the transmission. Other turboprops had the gas generator directly connected to the power section. If that was in your car, it would be like trying to start and drive it with the transmission always engaged. By splitting the engine, starting was much easier and maintenance was hugely simplified. The design is also called a "free turbine".

the inlet before turning and entering the engine. Photo: Howard Slutsken

The team also decided to make the PT6 a "reverse flow" engine. If you look at a PT6A, say, on a deHavilland Canada DHC-3T Turbine Otter, you'll see that the engine's air inlet is under and behind the propeller. The air travels below and to the rear of the engine before it makes a 90-degree upwards turn, enters the generator, and changes direction a few times as it gets compressed and ignited. The exhaust is in the forward part of the engine, not in the back. If you look carefully at this video, you'll see how the air flows through the engine. The two main sections are separate, with the forward, power section driving the prop, and the rear, gas generator driving the accessories at the rear of the engine.

Since the first PT6 was delivered 50 years ago, Pratt & Whitney Canada has impressively improved the engine, taking advantage of the many advances in material technologies, manufacturing processes, aerodynamics, and electronics. Today's PT6 is up to four times more powerful than the first turboprop, with up to 20% lower fuel consumption.

P&WC PT6A-34s power the new Viking Twin Otter 400.  Photo: Viking Air

The PT6′s statistics are impressive. Over 51,000 engines have been produced, powering more than 130 different applications. There are more than 69 different models, from 500 SHP to over 2,000 SHP.  You'll find PT6s in planes and helicopters, and the engines have also powered boats, cars and trains. In 1967, a PT6-powered racecar even led the Indy 500 until 8 miles from the end, when a $6 transmission bearing failed.

BONUS: My Quest to Ride on a Beechcraft Starship: The EPIC Flight

You might have flown on an airline flight in a plane powered by the PT6, on a deHavilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter or DHC-7 STOLplane, a Beechcraft 1900, Shorts SD360, Embraer Bandeirante  or Pilatus PC-12. And there are a huge number of business-aircraft applications, including AirlineReporter.com's Editor's favorite, the Beechcraft Starship. PT6s, everywhere!

A Beechcraft Starship shows off its twin, pusher PT6A turboprops.

BONUS: List of PT6 Applications (click the "Aircraft" tab)

Over 7,200 operators worldwide are flying aircraft powered by the PT6, and have logged over 385 million flying hours. P&WC says that if you were flying a PT6-powered plane at a speed of 310 mph, that would be like going to the moon and back 250,000 times. If any engine could do that, it would be the PT6.

Sikorsky's Rotor Blown Wing -- Look Familiar?

Sikorsky's Rotor Blown Wing -- Look Familiar?
http://feedly.com/k/1fPwhRy

Unmanned Rotor Blown Wing (Concept: Sikorsky)

When I first saw Sikorsky's Unmanned Rotor Blown Wing concept for DARPA'S VTOL X-Plane program, it reminded me of something. But I couldn't remember what, so I sought expert help. And the answer? It's Boeing's Heliwing - a tailsitter VTOL unmanned aircraft that flew, briefly, in 1995.

Heliwing (Photo: Boeing)

Heliwing was funded by the Pentagon's UAV Joint Program Office (remember that?). It was a 17ft-span, 1,450lb gross-weight UAV with two 7ft-diameter proprotors powered by a single 240shp Williams WTS117 turboshaft. The Heliwing was intended to reach 180kt in forward flight and carry a 200lb payload for 5hr. The sole example first flew in April 1995, but crashed in July when the engine flamed out and the program was shelved.

Sikorsky is working on conceptual and preliminary design of the Unmanned Rotor Blown Wing with Lockheed Martin Skunk Works under a 22-month, $14.4 million VTOL X-Plane Phase 1 contract. DARPA is expected to award up to four Phase 1 contracts. Aurora Flight Sciences has one, but isn't saying what its design looks like. And Boeing is tipped to get one for its Phantom Swift ducted-fan design (seen below). DARPA plans to pick one design to fly in 2017.

Phantom Swift subscale model (Photo: Boeing)

DARPA's goal for VTOL X-Plane is to fly a demonstrator capable of 300-400kt forward speed, but with a high hover efficiency (within 25% of ideal power loading) in vertical flight and high cruise efficiency (lift-to-drag ratio better than 10) in horizontal flight. In seeking proposals, the agency said it was looking for simplicity and elegance in design and encouraged innovative proposals and not simply improvements to existing designs.

Sikorsky isn't saying much about the Rotor Blown Wing concept except to confirm what the artist's impression strongly suggests -- it is a tailsitter like the Heliwing. The name suggests the wing remains aligned into the proprotor wash throughout transition between vertical and forward. That would reduce download on the wing in hover mode. But details beyond the five-blade proprotors and lack of horizontal tails are scarce.

Honeywell Aerospace is developing technologies that could help pilots perform simple commands using only their thoughts.

Flying by the seat of your… Thoughts?
http://feedly.com/k/1cFhLLN

Honeywell Aerospace is developing technologies that could help pilots perform simple commands using only their thoughts. The company's neurobotic control research is an offshoot of its augmented cognition work for military, which wants to find out when soldiers or pilots become task-saturated.

To sense what the brain is up to, scientists use electroencephalography (EEG) to monitor the minor voltage fluctuations that occur when neurons are moving in certain areas of the brain.  Honeywell is not so much interested in the sensors, which the consumer electronics industry will likely perfect, but in the software and algorithms that make an assessment of cognitive state.

Once you can accurately sense that neuron movement and the "states" it represents, you can put the thoughts to work.

Santosh Mathan, principal scientist at Honeywell, says one input option is "imagined motor movements". Close your eyes and imagine you are lifting your left arm and pointing, and you are generating what Mathan calls "magic movements" which could be used to control something.  That approach is a bit problematic however, as it "takes of lot of training to do it right", and not everyone will be able to have positive results.

More reliable is a method called steady state visual evoked response potential. The idea is that you look at external signals, for example oscillating geometric shapes on a display, with different shapes representing different commands.

Santosh says the technology could be used for non-safety critical functions, although Honeywell two years ago used the evoked response potential idea to fly a Boeing 737 in the simulator. Note that there are shapes for left, right, up and down commands. While interesting, Honeywell doesn't have any plans to market the idea, at least in the near term.

Is the Future of Aviation in Electric Aircraft?

Is the Future of Aviation in Electric Aircraft?
http://feedly.com/k/1cDhxVk

Editor's note: guest blogger Isaac Campbell, a technology enthusiast with an interest in electric planes and the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket works for Lektro. In his guest blog for Things With Wings, Isaac asks: is the future of aviation in electric aircraft?

The development of airplanes has come a long way since the first controlled and powered airplane was invented and flown by the Wright brothers in 1903. We have gone from a small, one seater airplane, to huge planes that can seat over 500 people. Airplanes are continually progressing, and all-electric airplanes may be our future.

This may come as no surprise, as companies such as Lektro have already brought all-electric technology to the aviation industry with electric airplane tugs. But now, advances in technology have allowed all-electric technology to lift off the ground with the invention of small electric planes. The GreenWing e430, for instance, has been designed as a two-seater and uses a Yuneec OEM 133.2V electric motor. It can fly at a top speed of 68mph for about an hour and a half and is supposed to be a fun, ecofriendly plane.

The idea of an all-electric plane has been around for over forty years, but as of yet, a commercial all-electric aircraft has not been produced. The largest electric plane that has been invented so far is a two seater: the Cessna 172. This plane uses lithium batteries to provide energy and can fly for two hours at a time and is still completing development.

So let's look more closely at the details of electric airplanes in the following sections:

The Potential of Electric Airplanes is in…

… Fuel efficiency

All electric planes will have less negative impact on our environment because of the fact that they will not burn fuel. Today, Boeing's 747 uses five gallons of fuel every mile. This means that about 36,000 gallons of fuel are being burned during a 10-hour flight.

If we could potentially reduce this number to zero in the next 20-30 years, we could greatly reduce our impact on the environment.

...Quiet flights

Battery powered engines are quiet, which will significantly reduce the noise on the airplanes and runway.

...Reduced costs

Perhaps the most convenient part of using all electric planes is that expenses could be significantly reduced. Even at the present, researchers are developing electric taxiing systems that allow a grounded aircraft to taxi without turning on its engine, which reduces the fuel used, noise produced, and allows the taxi process to be completed faster. Because of the fuel saved, that also translates to money being saved as well. For example, a 747 currently uses an average of 330 gallons of fuel to taxi. A system is currently being developed that uses electric energy, and only 8 gallons of fuel, that should be finished by 2015. This is a huge fuel saving, and would save about $200,000 per aircraft, each year.

Just imagine the amount of money that would be saved with completely changing to electric energy if using electric energy and 8 gallons of gas saves $200,000 per aircraft already.

The Future of Aviation is in...

...Boosted Batteries

In order to produce fully electric planes, the first step that developers will take is producing a battery that weighs the least possible, takes up the least amount of space, and holds an exceptional amount of power.

...Ultra-light Materials

Since more energy is used the heavier an airplane is, companies will produce lightweight parts from fiberglass and other such materials in order to cut down on the energy needed.

...Electric Mid-sized Crafts

Once better batteries and materials are produced, companies will be able to develop larger all electric planes. At the moment, a two seater is the largest all electric aircraft invented. However, as better parts are created, larger planes will be produced as well.

...Electric Commercial Aircraft

The hope for all electric airplanes is to not only have them available for private use, but for commercial use as well. Since the U.S alone uses over 18 billion gallons of jet fuel each year, expanding the use of electric planes to the commercial field will significantly reduce the U.S's carbon output.

...A Complete Turn from Petroleum

The end result of creating electric planes will be a complete end of the use of petroleum for fuel. Once this happens, not only will we be saving our environment, but we will be saving money and time as well.

Inventions such as a competent battery, ultra-light frame, etc. are not expected to be perfected until 2030-2040, making all electric planes a concept for the future. However, the future is bright, so fasten your seatbelts! Electric aviation is about to take off.
