Russia's aerohydrodynamic centre TsAGI conducts wind-tunnel tests on Il-112V - will replace An-26

FSUE "TsAGI" experts conducted tests on flutter model of military transport aircraft Il-112V

In July, the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute named after Professor NE Zhukovsky (included in SIC "Zhukovsky Institute") at the request of JSC "Aviation Complex named after SV Ilyushin "the first stage of tests on flutter dynamically similar models of military transport aircraft Il-112V. The experiment took place in a subsonic wind tunnel.

Scale model is 1: 5, wingspan - 5.3 m, weight - 300 kg. To ensure standardized reserves critical flutter speed it was simulated flight at speeds up to 650 km / h. The test results obtained by the various forms of flutter and found that their critical velocity exceeds the specified - 650 km / h. These data indicate adequate speed reserve safety of aircraft flutter. During the experiment, experts also investigated other parameters influencing fuel consumption, commercial load, rigidity, and possible changes in the dynamic characteristics of the aircraft in flight.

To give a final conclusion on the safety of aircraft flutter, TsAGI specialists will conduct a number of studies, including the second phase of the test pattern and frequency flutter tests of the first flight model.

Light military transport aircraft of new generation IL-112B is designed to replace the An-26. The aircraft is designed to operate in different geographical and climatic conditions. The aircraft will be equipped with advanced digital avionics complex.

Airbus Says It Won’t Build Hybrid-Electric Four-Seater

Airbus is not a general aviation company,” he said. “Our aim is to research technologies in order to learn and apply them into our overall road map for hybrid-electric technology.”

A new factory in the south of France that Botti had said would build E-Fan 2.0 and 4.0 models will be used instead to allow the company and its VoltAir subsidiary to explore how to introduce future electric-hybrid production concepts, eventually including commercial airliners. Several partners, including Daher and electric motor maker Siemens, are involved in the project.

E-Fan 2.0 has just entered the detailed design phase, Anderson said. He added that the light trainer may yet enter production, but only in “limited” numbers.

Canada may become the first country to ditch the F-35 fighter jet

If newly-obtained documents are any indication, Canada may become the first country to scrap its order for the American F-35 fighter jet, the most expensive weapons program ever. Letters sent to the big industry players are just further evidence that the government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to pull the trigger on a whole new open competition to pick Canada's next generation of fighter jet.

That competition will likely favour an out-of-the-box jet, over the expensive F-35.

Airbus recognizes suppliers for excellent in-service performance

13 July 2016 Press Release

On the occasion of the annual Airbus Suppliers Awards ceremony held during Farnborough Air Show 2016, Didier Lux, Airbus SVP, Head of Customer Services, and Geneviève Laurens-Chassagne, Head of Supplier Support Management distributed Awards and Certificates to Systems & Equipment suppliers. The suppliers recognized by Airbus were identified through the Supplier Support Rating process, which captured in-service feedback from over 130 Airbus customers. The result of this feedback is that the following suppliers each received an Award for being “top-performers”, having exceeded the standards set by Airbus Supplier Support Management:

- Rockwell Collins Avionics
- Thales Avionics
- Airbus Avionics
- Airbus Cabin Electronics
- Diehl Air Cabin
- Crane Aerospace
- Stelia Technical Seats

In addition, in 2016, for the first time, Airbus recognized “good performing” suppliers by issuing them a certificate. Eight suppliers obtained such certificates – having reached the standards set by Airbus Supplier Support Management:

- Diehl Aerospace
- Aircelle
- ACSS
- Meggitt Sensing Systems
- Siemens
- Technofan
- Telair
- UTAS Actuation Systems

“The historical ranking of the suppliers induces a virtuous competition between them to reach the award. Now we have completed this approach with an Airbus standard acknowledged by a certificate. The aim is to promote this standard and increase the quantity of suppliers who are achieving it,” said Genevieve Laurens-Chassagne, Airbus' Head of Supplier Support Management for Customer Services.

The next rating cycle will be launched in January 2017. Airbus takes the rating feedback as a basis to drive the suppliers’ support improvements by ensuring dedicated actions are launched by the suppliers. This benefits the operators of Airbus fleet all over the world.

Airbus’ widebody jetliners grab the spotlight on the Farnborough Airshow’s third day

13 July 2016 Headline news

It’s a “family affair” at the 2016 Farnborough International Airshow, where members of Airbus’ popular widebody product line – the new-generation A350 XWB, double-deck A380 and A330 – are flying high this week.

As usual, when the A350 XWB and A380 show up at a major aviation gathering they are must-see attractions. The two sister aircraft have headlined Airbus’ widebody family presence at Farnborough with static displays and flying presentations, while the company also has made commercial announcements so far involving 15 A350 XWBs and four A330neo jetliners.

Together, Airbus’ highly-efficient widebody jetliners offer the capabilities to meet the air transport sector’s growing traffic requirements. They cover a full range of operations – from regional and low-cost flights to long-haul flights on high-yield routes between the world’s biggest aviation hubs, as well as newer routes linking smaller, distant airports.

A350 XWB: delivering new-generation efficiency

The A350 XWB is the latest all-new member of Airbus’ widebody product line – bringing together advanced aerodynamics, design and technologies to provide 25 percent lower seat-mile costs compared to current competitors. Born from a customer-centric approach, the A350 XWB was designed with the market, for the market, enabling production of an aircraft that perfectly meets customers’ expectations.

It entered commercial service in early 2015, and offers seating capacities between 250 and 440 passengers. At the end of June, Airbus had secured 800-plus A350 XWB orders from around the globe, with jetliners already delivered to seven operators: Cathay Pacific Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, Finnair, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, TAM and Vietnam Airlines.

A330: dependable and modern

Complementing the A350 XWB in Airbus’ product line is the A330 – which first entered commercial service in 1994 and has received more than 1,600 orders to date. The popular A330 Family is a cornerstone member of Airbus’ widebody product line, recognised by customers worldwide for its superior versatility, cost-effectiveness and reliability.

Airbus spends some 150 million euros each year on enhancements and incremental improvements for the A330 Family. As a result, the A330 is the most efficient aircraft in its class, comprising five in-service variants, as well as two NEO (new engine option) versions that were launched in 2014 and will reduce fuel consumption by a further 14 percent per seat. The first A330neo deliveries are planned for late 2017.

A380: the preferred passenger choice

Airbus’ distinctive A380 is a leader in comfort and efficiency – and the best solution for capturing growth in the air transport industry with a unique ability to attract passengers, stimulate traffic and maximise revenue on high-value routes to and from congested airports.

Nearly 10 years since the first delivery to Singapore Airlines in 2007, Airbus’ A380 jetliner remains a winner with passengers and operators – with the 190 A380s currently flying in commercial service accumulating a dispatch reliability rate of 99.1 percent.

New commercial activity

On a day when the company spotlighted its market-leading widebody product line, a notable commercial announcement for the single-aisle A320 Family made the Farnborough Airshow’s third day a true “Airbus family gathering.”

Synergy Aerospace Corporation, the largest shareholder of Colombia-based Avianca and owner of Avianca Brasil, finalised a purchase agreement for 62 A320neo Family aircraft. The order helped Airbus surpass the 1,000 mark for aircraft sold in Latin America.

Innovation and digitalisation at Airbus

Whether widebody or single-aisle aircraft, a common theme connects Airbus’ market-leading product line: innovation. This pioneering spirit also is evident across all of the company’s activities and Airbus showcased the full range of its innovative approach – as well as its commitment to drive digitalisation in the aerospace industry – with a unique demonstration today.

Airbus used a drone containing a high-definition camera to demonstrate a visual inspection of the A350 XWB aircraft on static display. Flown using an automatic flight control system, and supervised by a human pilot, this inspection approach currently is in validation for use on A330 jetliners after completing the final assembly process prior to customer delivery. Future implementation is envisioned at Airbus final assembly sites around the world.

Innovation saving lives

Another aspect of the company’s innovation was on display during a media briefing hosted by the Airbus Foundation, Airbus Group Innovations (Airbus Group’s global research and technology network) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The three organisations have formed a partnership to explore bringing advanced aerospace technologies to the humanitarian community for helping save lives during disaster relief efforts.

“We see many areas where our business activities and the Airbus Foundation can directly support the humanitarian community in becoming more efficient and finding innovative solutions to the challenges they face,” said Andrea Debbane, Executive Director of the Airbus Foundation.

In other news at the Farnborough Airshow, Airbus also revealed its Supplier Awards today. Find out the winners by reading the related press release.

The A320neo has become the undisputed aircraft family of choice for Latin America, now with 410 firm orders, plus 58 commitments with lessors, from seven customers winning nearly 70 percent of orders in the new generation single-aisle aircraft market.

The A320neo Family is the world’s best-selling single aisle product line with over 4,500 orders received from 83 customers since its launch in 2010 capturing almost 60 percent share of the market. The A320neo Family incorporates latest technologies including new generation engines and Sharklet wing tip devices, which together deliver more than 15 percent in fuel savings per seat from day one and 20 percent by 2020 with further cabin innovations. Thanks to their widest cabin, all members of the A320neo Family offer unmatched comfort in all classes and Airbus’ 18” wide seats in economy as standard. With one aircraft in three sizes (A319neo, A320neo & A321neo), the A320neo Family, seating from 100 to 240 passengers, seamlessly covers the entire single-aisle segment from low to high-density domestic to longer range routes.

  • New mission segment for the H175
  • Jet-like flying experience setting new standards in private and business aviation
  • This aircraft will be yacht-based and will operate in Europe

Airbus Helicopters has delivered the first VIP version of the H175, the company's new medium class twin-engine helicopter, which entered service in 2014 for offshore
transportation. Combining unparalleled elements of style and comfort with the largest cabin in its class, the VIP version of the H175 offers a superior level of cabin interior provided by Pegasus Design, who has built a worldwide reputation on business jets and super yachts.

"The first delivery of a new version of the H175 is an important milestone for our company and for the H175 program. The H175 enlarges its operational capacity to a completely new mission segment" said Guillaume Faury, President of Airbus Helicopters. "The VIP variant is also great news for the private and business aviation market as flying in a helicopter has never been so close to a private jet experience".

Delivered to an undisclosed customer who will operate it in Europe as a complement to the yacht, the H175 offers a totally personalized VVIP cabin comfortably accommodating seven passengers. The aircraft features a unique cabin layout with two distinct seating areas: a forward zone that provides a lounge atmosphere with facing club seating for four passengers and a galley, as well as sofa-style seating that comfortably accommodates three passengers at the rear.

In addition to the exclusive cabin and the refinement of materials, the VIP version of the H175 offers some distinctive elements. These include: a hinged door– which optimizes space inside the cabin – a three steps electrical footstep for ease of access, electronically dimmable windows and mood lighting. Passengers will also enjoy in-flight connectivity with satcom, in-flight entertainment system with LCD screens, moving map and images provided by the tail fin and tail skid cameras – all controllable through dedicated touchscreens or personal devices. Also contributing to the jet-like flight experience is the effective soundproof cabin which allows passengers to communicate

Airbus demonstrates aircraft inspection by drone at Farnborough

13 July 2016 Press Release

Airbus has demonstrated aircraft visual inspection using a drone at the Farnborough Airshow.

The drone, equipped with a high definition camera, performs visual inspection for the upper part of the aircraft. It is flown using an automatic flight control system supervised by a human pilot. The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) follows a predetermined flight path and takes a series of pictures automatically. All these images and especially those showing any potential non-quality such as scratches, dents and painting defects, are compiled in a 3D digital model, recorded in a database and then analysed. This data helps improve traceability, prevention and reduction of damage.

The benefits of this innovative tool and process are significant. Aircraft downtime for inspection is reduced. Data acquisition by drone only takes 10 to 15 minutes, instead of 2 hours using conventional methods.

“The use of this new technology offers better working conditions including improving the safety and comfort for the quality inspectors”, says Nathalie Ducombeau, Airbus head of quality.

Operators no longer need to go up on a telescopic handler to perform the visual inspection, sometimes in poor weather conditions. In addition, picture analysis can be done anytime afterwards and in an office.

Aircraft visual inspections are an important part of the production process. It is part of the Airbus quality standards.

A full-scale industrial test is being conducted on A330 aircraft. Airbus is working on implementation on other programmes.

  • Delivery of first aircraft to airBaltic is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2016

Farnborough International Airshow – Bombardier Commercial Aircraft announced today that its CS300 aircraft has been awarded Type Certification by Transport Canada. Delivery of the first CS300 airliner to airBaltic of Latvia is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2016; the aircraft is currently in production at the C Series production facility in Mirabel, Québec.

The approval follows the CS100 aircraft Type Certification awarded by Transport Canada and validations for that aircraft model by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The CS100 aircraft will enter revenue service with Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) on July 15, 2016.

“The CS300 aircraft certification process was very straightforward because of the over 99 per cent commonality with the CS100 model,” said Robert Dewar, Vice President, C Series Aircraft Program, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft. “The
C Series flight test program covered more than 5,000 hours and most of the data obtained covered both models.

“We are delighted that operators will be getting C Series aircraft that have exceeded expectations, in particular on airfield performance,” Mr. Dewar added. "We can now confirm a range improvement in excess of 20 per cent out of hot-and-high airports such as Denver, Mexico City or Lhasa."

“Obtaining the CS300 Type Certification is another validation of the sustained efforts deployed by Bombardier employees and our many valued suppliers,” said François Caza, Vice President, Product Development and Chief Engineer and Head of Bombardier’s Design Approval Organization. “Their contributions have ensured that we have all-new, best-in-class aircraft that will serve operators well for many years to come.”

About C Series Aircraft
The C Series is the only aircraft optimized for the 100- to 150-seat market segment, which drives the aircraft’s phenomenal economic proposition and performance, opening up new opportunities for single-aisle aircraft operation.

http://quwa.org/2016/07/11/antonov-continues-market-178-utility-transport-aircraft/
Derived from the An-158, the An-178 is being marketed as a military transport aircraft comparable to the C-130 and the up and coming KC-390. Powered by wo Ivchenko Progress D-436 turbofans, the An-178 is capable of carrying 18 tons, making it a lighter platform in comparison to the C-130J’s 22 tons and KC-390’s 23 tons. However, its key selling point seems to center on cost, which is apparently much lower (at around $40 million a unit) in comparison to its direct alternatives.

Airbus will lower the production rate of the giant A380 from 18/yr to 12/yr, effective in 2018, the company confirmed after the French newspaper La Tribune first reported the news Tuesday evening Paris Time.

In January, LNC in its annual production rate forecast projected the A380 rate coming down to 12/yr by 2020. More recently Leeham Co. LLC told clients Airbus needed to figure out how to achieve a break-even at one a month (12/yr) and bring rates down sooner.

Cessna bolsters Grand Caravan EX versatility with hard point provisions

FARNBOROUGH, U.K. (July 11, 2016) – Cessna Aircraft Company, a subsidiary of Textron Aviation Inc., a Textron Inc. (NYSE:TXT) company, today announced it has recently received certification for and is now offering hard point provisions for the Cessna Grand Caravan EX. These hard points expand the aircraft’s versatility by allowing operators additional mission capabilities such as extended range with additional fuel tanks, increased cargo space, agricultural operations and the ability to configure the aircraft for missions that require armament. The company will be displaying a mock-up of a Grand Caravan EX wing with hard points at the Farnborough International Airshow the week of July 11.

“It’s essential that we continue to tailor solutions for our special mission operators’ needs. The hard point wing structure furthers the Grand Caravan EX’s already legendary versatility by adding more mission flexibility to the platform,” said Tom Hammoor, president, Textron Aviation’s defense company. “The Caravan platform is operating in many special mission roles around the world and accounts for a large percentage of our worldwide Caravan fleet.”

The Grand Caravan EX is particularly well suited for a wide array of operations due to its spacious and easily reconfigurable cabin, high useful load of more than 3,500 lbs. (1,588 kg), large cargo door and the ability to operate from short, unimproved surfaces. These aircraft continue to succeed in a variety of special mission applications, including aerial survey, air ambulance, amphibious operations, surveillance, training and utility/transport.

About the Cessna Caravan

Cessna currently offers the Caravan and Grand Caravan EX with the option to modify both models with floats for amphibious operations. The fleet of more than 2,500 Caravans is now certified in 100 countries with more than 13 million flight hours amassed since the aircraft was introduced. Caravans fulfill roles for multiple missions, ranging from flight training to recreation, commuter airlines to VIP transport, cargo carriers and humanitarian missions.

Special mission expertise

Textron Aviation offers the largest lineup of special mission platforms in the industry, with the entire product range of Beechcraft and Cessna products available in special mission configurations. From piston-engine to turboprop aircraft, and even Citation jets, Textron Aviation can provide a customized aviation solution for nearly any mission profile.

  •  Uniting the portfolios of Navtech, Airbus ProSky, and Airbus Flight Operations Services.
  • Offering a complete range of digital flight operations solutions for users in civil or military environments, on ground or on-board any aircraft.

12 July 2016 Press Release

Farnborough Air Show 2016 – Following the acquisition in March this year of Navtech, Airbus has launched its new integrated flight operations and air traffic management service company – NAVBLUE – to provide a complete range of digital end-to-end and integrated flight operations solutions. NAVBLUE will function as a wholly owned subsidiary of Airbus and be a key unit of Services By Airbus. NAVBLUE’s main offices are located in Waterloo, Ontario Canada, Hersham in the United Kingdom and Toulouse in France, with satellite sites around the world.

NAVBLUE’s portfolio integrates the existing product offer of Navtech – which is now bolstered by Airbus ProSky’s Air Traffic Management solutions, as well as Airbus’ popular Flight Operations innovations such as ROPS and FlySmart. The new subsidiary will also draw upon the unique expertise of Airbus Defence and Space coupled with proprietary high quality satellite data and extensive data analysis expertise, to deliver the most accurate solutions. NAVBLUE’s solutions and services will not be limited to Airbus aircraft, but will build on the independent scope and position of Navtech. The product families will support both civil or military environments, on the ground or on board any aircraft.

Mike Hulley, President & CEO of NAVBLUE said: “I am looking forward to lead into the future our new company, NAVBLUE, which is fuelled by the customer-centric agility of Navtech, combined with the pioneering philosophy of Airbus. Together, we will benefit from an expanded global footprint stretching from Waterloo to London to Toulouse and beyond.” He added: “With NAVBLUE we will reinforce and accelerate an already successful business with innovative, complementary flight operations services, talent and customer base around the world.”

Laurent Martinez, SVP of Airbus’ Services business unit said: “NAVBLUE will give a new impetus to the market and bring confidence in fully digital value propositions to our existing and future customers – for all types of aircraft.” He added: “I am also confident that NAVBLUE will evolve and thrive, in the same entrepreneurial spirit as Navtech has done over the last 30 years, as an agile, independent challenger and global flight operations and air traffic management service provider.”

Going forward, NAVBLUE’s offering will be clustered around three pillars: “Data+”, best-in-class aerodata products giving customers access to the right data at the right time, in the right format and in the right place; “N-Software Services”, tailored software services enabling customers to enhance their operations through unique software solutions; and “Bespoke Solutions by NAVBLUE”, optimizing the overall air traffic management ecosystem by providing products and services around safety, compliance and performance monitoring.
