See A Rocket Plume In All Its High-Def Glory

We've never seen a rocket test-firing look this trippy Rockets are hard to record. They're loud, Earth-shaking, and very, very bright. Not ideal conditions for sensitive recording equipment. To capture a plume in all its explosive awesomeness, NASA developed the High Dynamic Range Stereo X (HiDyR...

NASA makes the case for space-based atmospheric CO2-detecting laser
// Gizmag Emerging Technology Magazine

NASA engineers have developed a new instrument for gathering around-the-clock atmospheric carbon dioxide measurements from space. The CO2 Sounder Lidar would beam a laser down to the Earth's surface and measure the wavelengths of light that reflect back to provide a much more accurate measurement of CO2 levels than existing systems, and in a wider range of conditions.

NASA explores greener future for aviation
// Gizmag Emerging Technology Magazine

From apps that suggest faster routes to airplane wings more resistant to bug guts, NASA is looking at air travel from every angle to improve efficiency and cut pollution. The Convergent Aeronautics Solutions project is very much on the conceptual side of these efforts, but by sparking the imaginations of the agency's brightest minds it could have some sort of say in the future of aviation. 3D-printed electrical engines and adaptive wings are among the five technological concepts selected for this year's project, all of which will now undergo a two-year study with a view to reducing aircraft fuel and emissions.

Analysis: Aviation could consume a quarter of 1.5C carbon budget by 2050

https://www.carbonbrief.org/aviation-consume-quarter-carbon-budget

The aviation industry faces huge challenges if it is to meet its own self-imposed climate change targets, according to a new UN report.

And even if it does meet all its targets, aviation will still have consumed 12% of the global carbon budget for 1.5C by 2050, Carbon Brief analysis shows. If it fails to reach this target, its share of this budget could rise to as much as 27%.
