Swiss solar-powered UAS tested for refugee rescue missions

The solar-power AtlantikSolar unmanned aircraft system (UAS) last month demonstrated its ability to assist in search-and-rescue (SAR) missions associated with the refugee crisis occurring in the Mediterranean.

A year after completing an 81-hour mission that established an endurance record for UAS under 110 pounds, the AtlantikSolar successfully demonstrated the first-ever fully-autonomous solar-powered perpetual flight with a significant payload. The aircraft carried a color and thermal camera during the simulated 26-hour SAR mission.

Bjorn’s Corner: The Engine challenge [feedly]

In our Corners on East bloc aeronautical industries, we could see that the hardest part to master in a new civilian airliner is the engine.

Both new airliners from Russia and China (Irkut MC-21 and COMAC C919) start their lives with Western engines.

Why is this so? What are the challenges that make engines harder to create than aircraft?

Boeing and Teledyne Controls Partner to Improve Airplane Software and Data Management

New Fleetwide Data Manager offering to improve fleet-wide transfer of essential information

AMSTERDAM, October 19, 2016 – Boeing [NYSE:BA] and Teledyne Controls today announced that the companies will combine their ground-based operational data products to create the new Fleetwide Data Manager program. The goal is to provide a unified solution for airlines to transfer data to and from airplanes more efficiently, across fleet-wide operations.

The new Fleetwide Data Manager from Boeing and Teledyne will set an industry standard for the transfer of navigation databases, software updates and quick access recorder (QAR) data between an airline’s maintenance facilities and its airplane fleet. The solution is being developed after Boeing and Teledyne recognized the need for an integrated product to work across Boeing and non-Boeing airplanes in an airline’s fleet.

“We continually listen to the needs of our customers, and they told us that they are pleased with the functionality of the current Boeing data transfer solution, but many customers use the Teledyne data transfer solution for their legacy, and non-Boeing airplanes,” said Kevin Crowley, vice president, Boeing Digital Aviation. “In teaming with Teledyne, we will resolve this issue by providing best-in-class features from both companies that seamlessly connects mixed-fleet operations.”

Fleetwide Data Manager combines capabilities from Boeing’s Loadable Software Airplane Parts Librarian (LSAPL) with Teledyne’s Loadstar® Server Enterprise (LSE) to improve how airlines transmit essential digital data and reduce airplane down time while distributing information on the ground.

“Transitioning to Fleetwide Data Manager will eliminate our customers’ need to purchase both LSAP Librarian and LSE for full fleet coverage, which reduces software purchase, maintenance and training costs,” said Masood Hassan, president, Teledyne Controls. “This combined approach to the data transfer process will simplify what was a complex issue for airlines and offers a familiar user experience with new features and benefits.”

The new Fleetwide Data Manager is expected to be available from Boeing and Teledyne for the airline market in late 2017.

Airbus Defence and Space Selects Google Cloud Platform as Preferred Partner

October 18, 2016 - News

Airbus Defence and Space has launched One Atlas, a new basemap streaming service delivering access to its satellite imagery over the world, fully refreshed within a 12-month period. It is powered by Google Cloud Platform.

This service is a major leap forward for enabling access to satellite imagery for our customers by leveraging the power of Google Cloud Platform and Airbus Defence and Space technologies. A completely new approach in data storage, hosting and dissemination has been implemented utilizing Google Cloud Platform to ingest the several hundred Terabytes of data annually required by One Atlas. This will bring value to all our clients for a wide range of applications such as infrastructure preparatory studies, land management, agricultural lands and crop species mapping or even tree cover change detection in regions prone to deforestation.

"Our team at Google Cloud is dedicated to helping businesses find success with public cloud and innovative technologies, such as cloud machine learning. We're excited to collaborate with Airbus Defence and Space to create new products and transform existing business models through the power of Google Cloud Platform" said Carl Schachter, VP of Google Cloud Platform.

Google Cloud Platform was selected from seven public Cloud providers due to its high-end technology, security resilience and strategic fit with Airbus Defence and Space’s business and development roadmap.

"All satellite data collected each day are automatically processed and made readily-accessible in a global imagery library that is stored in Google Cloud Platform," said Bernhard Brenner, Head of the Intelligence Business Cluster at Airbus Defense and Space. "Google Cloud Platform's global scale, low latency and infrastructure capacities in Europe give us the required performance, flexibility and scalability for current and future data volumes, ensuring a high level of service for our customers."

Additional investigations into the use of Google Cloud Platform and other Google tools are currently ongoing at Airbus Defence and Space, e.g. the integration of other datasets such as TerraSAR-X radar data and WorldDEM into One Atlas, or the development of analytics services such as change detection and automatic object extraction. Very promising results have already been obtained from using Tensor Flow, an open source library for machine learning, and Cloud Machine Learning for automatic cloud detection.

Press release: SCORPION JET SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETES FIRST WEAPONS CAPABILITY EXERCISE

WICHITA, Kan. (Oct. 19, 2016) – Textron AirLand, LLC, a Textron Inc. (NYSE:TXT) company, today announced that the Scorpion jet has successfully completed its first weapons exercise at White Sands Missile Range, while operating from Holloman Air Force Base (HAFB) in New Mexico. This exercise effectively demonstrated the Scorpion’s close air support mission capability through the successful deployment of three widely used weapon systems.

The weapons system design, integration and flight test coordination for all three weapon types were achieved in an impressive time span of less than three months. The weapons testing program occurred Oct. 10-14 in coordination with the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) organization and the 586th Flight Test Squadron from HAFB. All weapon types performed flawlessly and included Hydra-70 unguided 2.75-inch rockets, BAE Systems’ Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) and AGM-114F Hellfire Missiles. The weapons were guided to their targets using first a ground-based laser designator system and then an airborne laser on the Scorpion‘s L-3 WESCAM’s MX-15Di sensor suite.

“The success of the first weapons capability exercise is a major milestone for the Scorpion program as we continue to demonstrate its mission flexibility and multi-role capabilities,” said Tom Hammoor, senior vice president of Defense at Textron Aviation. “We could not be more pleased with the results of this exercise, thanks to the collaboration between our Scorpion team, the NAVSEA organization and the Holloman Air Force Base.”

The first Scorpion prototype continues its robust flight test program, while the first flight of the first production conforming Scorpion is expected soon.

In the near future, an F-35 fighter plane on a routine flight kicks in its afterburners and it goes supersonic. Suddenly, there's an almighty bang as one of the turbine blades in the jet engine disintegrates and within seconds the US$85 million plane is tearing itself to pieces. Is it an accident or sabotage? According to researchers at Ben-Gurion University (BGU), this scenario could be an example of a new type of cyber warfare where saboteurs can fool 3D printers into creating self-destructing parts that are indistinguishable from the real thing.
