Flying in formation in order to reduce fuel consumption

The US Air Force's Air Mobility Command recently conducted flight tests with C-17s flying in formations meant to reduce drag on the trailing aircraft(s), like geese V-shaped migrations. This could save fuel, and continues work started last decade by NASA and Boeing with the Autonomous Formation Flight [PDF]. Researchers from Stanford pitched a similar idea to Airbus 3 years ago, which so far seems to have translated into a CGI with a 2050 horizon.

Largest order in the airline's history provides Alaska the most fuel-efficient single-aisle airplanes available

SEATTLE, Oct. 11, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Alaska Airlines announced today a firm order for 20 737 MAX 8s, 17 737 MAX 9s and 13 Next-Generation 737-900ERs. The order, valued at more than $5 billion at current list prices, is the largest in Alaska Airlines' history.

"This order positions us for growth and ensures that we'll continue to operate the quietest and most fuel-efficient aircraft available for the foreseeable future. That means our customers will continue to enjoy a comfortable in-flight experience, low fares and excellent on-time performance," Alaska Airlines President and CEO Brad Tilden said. "We value our longstanding relationship with Boeing and look forward to painting 'Proudly All Boeing' on the nose of our aircraft for many, many years into the future."

The 737 MAX is a new-engine variant of the world's best-selling airplane and builds on the strengths of today's Next-Generation 737. The 737 MAX incorporates the latest-technology CFM International LEAP-1B engines to deliver the highest efficiency, reliability and passenger comfort in the single-aisle market. Airlines operating the 737 MAX will see a 13 percent fuel-use improvement over today's most fuel-efficient single-aisle airplanes and an 8 percent operating cost per seat advantage over tomorrow's competition.

"The 737 MAX will be a great addition to Alaska Airlines' all-Boeing 737 fleet," said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Ray Conner. Alaska Airlines currently operates 120 Boeing 737s. The new order, plus 25 existing firm delivery positions, gives the carrier the flexibility to manage the size of its fleet to meet air travel demand over the next decade.

The Alaska Airlines order continues the momentum of the 737 MAX in the marketplace. The order brings the total number of 737 MAX orders to date to 858 airplanes.

Deputy Chief of the Royal Malaysian Air Force, Lieutenant General Datuk Roslan Saad, has given the Airbus Military A400M his thumbs up following his test flight of the new generation airlifter in Toulouse, France, recently.

“It was an enormous pleasure to fly the aircraft that it is going to be at the heart of the RMAF´s transport capabilities in future. It is a real ‘pilot´s aircraft’ and I very much look forward to seeing it enter service so that we can apply its capabilities on a wide variety of missions,” said Lieutenant General Datuk Roslan.

The Malaysian Government has ordered four of the A400M. It is expected to take delivery of its first A400M in 2015.

A total of 174 aircraft have so far been ordered by Belgium France, Germany, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Spain, Turkey and the United Kingdom.

BAE Systems and EADS end discussions regarding possible combination

Following the announcements made by BAE Systems plc ("BAE Systems") and EADS N.V. ("EADS") on 12 September 2012 in relation to a possible combination of their businesses through a dual listed company structure, BAE Systems and EADS announce that they have decided to terminate their discussions.

BAE Systems and EADS believe that the merger was based on sound industrial logic. It represented a unique opportunity to create a combination from two strong and successful companies greater than the sum of the parts. The merger would have produced a combined business that would have been a technology leader and a greater force for competition and growth across both the commercial aerospace and defence sectors and which would have delivered tangible benefits to all stakeholders. Discussions with the relevant governments had not reached a point where both companies could fully disclose the benefits and detailed business case for this merger. BAE Systems and EADS are, however, confident that these would have provided a strong case to take to their shareholders

As between themselves, BAE Systems and EADS had agreed the principal terms of the merger, subject to the approval of their respective Boards, including:
The commercial terms of the merger;
The legal structure of the merger;
Governance arrangements which would enable the combined business to operate in a normal commercial manner;
A unified management and Board structure;
The strategy for the combined business;
Near-term dividend policy;
The cost saving and revenue benefits of the combination and associated implementation plan.


From the outset of discussions between the parties, both BAE Systems and EADS were clear that they would proceed with a merger of their businesses only if a transaction structure could be created that aligned the interests of the parties' stakeholders and received their support. BAE Systems and EADS worked constructively to deliver such a structure.

Notwithstanding a great deal of constructive and professional engagement with the respective governments over recent weeks, it has become clear that the interests of the parties' government stakeholders cannot be adequately reconciled with each other or with the objectives that BAE Systems and EADS established for the merger. BAE Systems and EADS have therefore decided it is in the best interests of their companies and shareholders to terminate the discussions and to continue to focus on delivering their respective strategies.

Ian King, Chief Executive of BAE Systems, today said:

"We are obviously disappointed that we were unable to reach an acceptable agreement with our various government stakeholders. We believe the merger presented a unique opportunity for BAE Systems and EADS to combine two world class and complementary businesses to create a world leading aerospace, defence and security group.

However, our business remains strong and financially robust. We continue to see opportunities across our platforms and services offerings and in the various international markets in which we operate. We remain committed to delivering total shareholder value and look to the future with confidence."

Tom Enders, Chief Executive of EADS, today said:

"I'd like to thank everybody who supported us, in particular all the colleagues at BAE Systems and EADS for all their hard work and dedication to this project in recent months. A special thank-you goes to Ian King for his trust and partnership. It is, of course, a pity we didn't succeed but I'm glad we tried. According to mission control at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) at Pasadena, California, the object is “benign” and poses no likely threat to continuing the mission.
