Eurocopter firma un acuerdo destinado a equipar los helicópteros militares NH90 TTH alemanes para misiones avanzadas de evacuación sanitaria con cuidados intensivos

Eurocopter y el Ministerio Federal de Defensa alemán han firmado hoy un contrato para 
equipar doce helicópteros de transporte táctico NH90 (TTH) para cambio rápido y 
cuidados intensivos en operaciones de evacuación aérea avanzada.    

El acuerdo, firmado en el Salón Aeronáutico de Paris, cubre la entrega de un equipamiento de evacuación sanitaria avanzada (Forward Air MedEvac Kits, FwdAirMedEvac) que permite  la transformación de los helicópteros militares polivalentes NH90 como respuesta de Eurocopter a la iniciativa del Ministerio de Defensa alemán para lograr capacidad de evacuación sanitaria protegida en situaciones de combate.   
 
La configuración FwdAirMedEvac del NH90 capacita a las fuerzas armadas para llevar a cabo misiones de evacuación en helicóptero sobre cualquier terreno, de día o de noche, y bajo cualesquiera condiciones meteorológicas o de vuelo visual, sea cual sea la amenaza existente en el teatro de operaciones. Alemania podrá poner en práctica la nueva capacidad FwdAirMedEvac a partir de julio de 2012.   
   
En la firma del contrato en el salón aeronáutico de París estuvieron presentes Ralf Barnscheidt, vicepresidente de Clientes Gubernamentales de Eurocopter, Klaus Przemeck, vicepresidente del grupo Eurocopter, NAHEMA TTH del programa NH90, y Helmut Richter, de la Oficina Federal de Tecnologías de Defensa y Adquisiciones (BWB, siglas en alemán), en representación del Gobierno alemán.    
 
"Eurocopter ha desarrollado un equipamiento de evacuación aérea sanitaria avanzada a la 
medida de las futuras necesidades de las fuerzas armadas alemanas", dijo Barnscheidt. 
"Complementa las capacidades polivalentes del NH90 y, en una época de presupuestos 
limitados, ofrece una solución económica completa y eficiente para llevar a cabo misiones de evacuación complicadas".     
  
En la configuración FwdAirMedEvac, los helicópteros NH90 pueden estar equipados con dos puestos de cuidades intensivos para el tratamiento de heridos y con asientos para el personal sanitario. El paquete de misión es adecuado para instalarlo en el NH90 TTH en sólo 30 minutos. 

El equipamiento médico, tal como un desfibrilador, un ventilador de transporte y un monitor de control, permite el tratamiento de heridos y víctimas traumatizadas a bordo del aparato. El diseño de la zona de trabajo satisface los requisitos del Servicio Médico del Ejército alemán.     

En una misión característica de evacuación sanitaria podrían participar dos helicópteros: uno para la evacuación de soldados o de personal civil heridos, el segundo para protección armada de la misión.

Los sistemas elegidos para la configuración aseguran la rápida disponibilidad del helicóptero, ya que son compatibles con el programa actual del NH90. Para abreviar el procedimiento de autorización se ha adelantado una parte del trabajo de desarrollo previsto en un principio para la configuración operacional final (Final Operational Configuration, FOC) del NH90. Algunos de los sistemas ya existentes, como el de contramedidas electrónicas, la pantalla en casco para vuelos nocturnos a baja cota, y las comunicaciones protegidas de voz se adaptarán a los nuevos requisitos de misión.    

El NH90 es el mayor programa de helicóptero militar jamás puesto en marcha en Europa. El helicóptero bimotor de peso medio está equipado con la más moderna tecnología y se entrega en dos versiones: como helicóptero de transporte táctico (TTH) y como helicóptero de fragata OTAN (NFH). Las fuerzas armadas alemanas han cursado un pedido total de 122 NH90 en la variante TTH. De ellos, 80 son para las unidades de aviadores del Ejército y 42 para la Fuerza Aérea.   

Como la aeronave de ala rotatoria más moderna de su clase, el NH90 ofrece un alto grado de integración en torno a un sistema central de aviónica de doble bus, una cabina de mando completamente digital con pantallas multifuncionales, así como mandos de vuelo eléctricos (flyby-wire), además de un piloto automático de cuatro ejes.    

La gestión del programa NH90 está a cargo de NHIndustries, un consorcio integrado por 
AgustaWestland (32%), Eurocopter (62,5%) y Fokker Aerostructures (5,5%). El total de pedidos en firme de las versiones del NH90 asciende a 529 unidades, que se destinan a 19 fuerzas armadas de 14 países diferentes: Alemania, Australia, Bélgica, España, Finlandia, Francia, Grecia, Italia, Noruega, Nueva Zelanda, Omán, Países Bajos, Portugal y Suecia.

Finnish NH90 helicopters demonstrate their operational capabilities: More than 150 soldiers are airlifted over a 320 km. distance in five hours

The multi-role NH90 helicopter's ability to support large troop movements over long 
distances were demonstrated during the Finnish Defense Forces' main field exercise this 
month, in which 157 soldiers were transported 320 kilometers during two operational 
rotations. 

For this exercise, the Finnish NH90 Utti Jaeger Regiment's Helicopter Battalion was given a mission to relocate 157 conscripts of the Guard Jaeger Regiment from the Helsinki area to Kauhava. 

Eight NH90 TTHs (tactical transport helicopters) – along with an additional helicopter in reserve – were assigned to realize this ambitious mission, which was accomplished in five hours during two rotations.  The operation involved a total of 40 flight hours with an 80 percent availability, and it by far outperformed the Finnish Defense Forces' expectations. Two hot refueling were conducted during the operation, with four helicopters being refueled at same time during servicing lasting only nine minutes.  

"The NH90 TTH is technologically very advanced, very fast and very agile compared to any 
tactical transport helicopter in the world," said Lieutenant Colonel Ari Pellinen, Commanding Officer of the Helicopter Battalion. "For the pilot, it is a real pleasure to fly – like a highperformance sports car with 16 seats in the back."  

The success of this massive troop airlift exercise demonstrated the competences of the Finnish Defense Forces' pilots, mechanics and technicians with respect to planning, execution and maintenance of the NH90.  In addition, it was the result of a strong cooperation between all actors who have contributed to supporting each phase of this military exercise – which was named "Pyörremyrsky" (the Finnish word for "whirlwind") and performed on June 8. 

"The support of Eurocopter for this exercise was critically important as increased flow of spare parts, and Patria Helicopters Utti has been of great assistance in reducing the workload of the Battalion's technical personnel," Lt. Col. Pellinen added.  "During the exercise, the maintenance actions were carried out by Battalion's own technical personnel.  Eurocopter's On-Site-Support (OSS) in Utti has constantly been important  in providing complementary instructions and enhancing the communications between Eurocopter and the end user."  

To date, the Utti Jaeger Regiment's Helicopter Battalion has received 10 NH90 TTHs out of the 20 ordered by Finland from the NHIndustries consortium.  "The achievement of this tremendous troop transportation by the Finnish Defense Forces marks an important milestone in the NH90's successful fielding," stated Wolfgang Schoder, the Executive Vice President for Programs at Eurocopter

The NH90 is a 9-10 metric ton-class helicopter designed to modernize and boost the capability of tactical transport and anti-submarine combat fleets. It is a fly-by-wire, all-composite aircraft with the highest crashworthiness standards. Equipped with a large cabin, a rear ramp, weather radar and forward looking infrared sensor, the NH90 is capable of carrying two pilots, two loadmasters and 18 combat troops over ranges of up to 900 km. at maximum speeds of 300 km./hr. 

Firm orders for all NH90 versions have reached 529 aircraft from 14 countries worldwide. The NH90 is the biggest military helicopter program ever launched in Europe, and also is the most complex – with 23 different variants being produced. NH90 production progressing well, with six assembly lines now operational in France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Finland and Australia. To date, 74 NH90s have been delivered to customers. The NH90 program is managed by NHIndustries, a consortium owned by AgustaWestland (32 percent), Eurocopter (62.5 percent), and Fokker Aerostructures (5.5 percent).

Boeing Names KC-46 Tanker Suppliers

ST. LOUIS, June 22, 2011 -- The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] today announced the supplier team that will provide key components for the U.S. Air Force's KC-46 Tanker. The Air Force selected Boeing on Feb. 24 to replace 179 Eisenhower-era KC-135 aerial refueling aircraft.

Based on the proven Boeing 767-200ER commercial aircraft, the KC-46 is powered by two Pratt & Whitney PW4062 engines and will be flown by three aircrew members (pilot, co-pilot, boom operator) with additional permanent seating for 12 aircrew.

The KC-46 has a maximum fuel capacity of 212,000 pounds and is equipped with a flush-mounted, air-to-air refueling receptacle that is capable of onloading fuel at 1,200 gallons per minute.

Boom operators will control the refueling systems from the crew compartment via the AROS and a series of cameras mounted on the tanker’s fuselage that provide a 185-degree field of view, as well as a camera on the boom that captures 3-D video. This advanced system allows the boom operator to refuel all fixed-wing receiver aircraft, anytime, on every mission, to include simultaneous multi-point refueling from the wing air refueling pods. The KC-46 refueling systems include a digital fly-by-wire boom capable of offloading 1,200 gallons of fuel per minute, as well as a permanent centerline drogue system and removable wing air refueling pods that can each offload 400 gallons of fuel per minute.

Featuring a maximum takeoff weight of 415,000 pounds, the tanker will carry 18 463L cargo pallets (the same number of pallets as the Air Force’s Boeing C-17 airlifter) and is capable of transporting 58 passengers normally and up to 114 passengers during contingency operations. This multi-mission tanker aircraft also will provide urgent aeromedical evacuation by transporting 58 medical patients (24 litters/34 ambulatory).
Boeing will build the KC-46 Tanker using a low-risk approach to manufacturing by a trained and experienced workforce at existing facilities in Everett, Wash., and Wichita.

More than one million new pilots and technicians needed over next 20 years

Boeing Challenges Industry to Meet Unprecedented Demand for Aviation Personnel

E BOURGET, France, June 22, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) today called upon the aviation industry to invest, evolve and adapt to support the expected exponential growth in demand for qualified aviation personnel as the company released its 2011 Pilot and Technician Outlook at the Paris Air Show.
The Boeing outlook indicates that by 2030 the aviation industry will require:

  • 460,000 new commercial airline pilots
  • 650,000 new commercial airline maintenance technicians



"Clearly, the sheer size of this vital pipeline is staggering," said Sherry Carbary, vice president, Boeing Flight Services. The largest demand for pilots and technicians will be in the Asia Pacific region, with an expected need for 182,300 pilots and 247,400 technicians. China alone will need 72,700 pilots and 108,300 technicians.

Boeing to Lead Trade Mission to Morocco

Boeing suppliers meet with Moroccan Aerospace Industries Association in October

Pan sector initiative targets two million tonnes of aviation biofuel by 2020

The European Commission, Airbus, leading European airlines and European biofuel producers, have launched an exciting new industry wide initiative to try and speed up the commercialisation of aviation biofuels in Europe.

The inititive labelled “Biofuel Flightpath” is a roadmap with clear milestones which targets an annual production of two million tonnes of sustainably produced biofuel for aviation by 2020. The biofuel will be produced in Europe from European sourced feedstock material and has the backing of The European Commissioner, Günther Oettinger, Airbus CEO Tom Enders, major European airlines, and a number of advanced biofuel producers.

The “Biofuel Flightpath” commits members to support and promote the production, storage and distribution of sustainably produced drop-in biofuels for use in aviation and to reach two million tonnes production and consumption by 2020. It also targets establishing appropriate financial mechanisms to support the construction of industrial “first of a kind” advanced biofuel production plants.

"This is a unique opportunity to create the first industrial venture ever introducing sustainable biofuels for commercially competitive operations. The Commission therefore fully supports all efforts in this direction and will actively contribute to their success. Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company has got one order for 12 SSJ100 for PT Sky Aviation

June 21st, 2011, Le Bourget (France) - At Le Bourget Airshow Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company and Indonesian regional carrier PT Sky Aviation signed the Heads of Agreement (HOA) for the delivery of 12 Sukhoi Superjet 100/95B aircraft. The order is valued at 379.2 million USD at list prices. The document was signed by Vladimir Prisyazhnyuk, President of JSC «Sukhoi Civil Aircraft» and Krisman Tarigan, President Director Sky Aviation.

Under the document signed, deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2012.

Sukhoi Superjet 100 (RRJ-95) is a 100 seat regional jet designed, developed and built by Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company (SCAC), in partnership with Alenia Aeronautica. On May 19th 2008 SSJ100 successfully accomplished its first flight. The Sukhoi Superjet 100 cruises at a Maximum Operating Speed of Mach 0.81 and 40.000 feet. It takes off from a 1.731 meters runway in the basic range and 2.052 meters in the long range. The operating range for the basic version is 3.048 km and 4.578 km for the long range version. In February 2011, the SSJ100 obtained the Type Certificate by the Russian Certification Authority IAC AR. The EASA certification is expected to follow in 2011. On April 19th 2011 first production SSJ100 was delivered to Armavia airlines (Armenia).

The SSJ100 enlarges the family with the new Sukhoi Business Jet (SBJ) version

June 21st, 2011, Le Bourget (France) - Sukhoi Civil Aircraft and Alenia Aeronautica, a Finmeccanica Company, have the pleasure to announce the new Business Jet version of the Sukhoi Superjet 100 regional jet (SBJ).

The additional fuel tanks in the cargo hold will provide the aircraft with a range of almost 4,300 nm more than double the SSJ100’s standard range of 1,645 nm, enabling passengers to fly non stop, for example from Paris to New York.

The launch of the new business version comes just two months after the EIS. The first SSJ100 entered into revenue services with Armavia on April 21, 2011. The aircraft was put into operation in an extremely short period of time, two days after the official delivery to the launch customer on April, 19 2011.

On June, 16 the SSJ100 entered into commercial operation with the Russian airline Aeroflot from Moscow to St. Petersburg.

During the first two months of operation the SSJ100 totalized 119 flights and more than 268 hours. Owing to its economic efficiency and operational capabilities, the aircraft confirmed to be suitable both to regional and to short-haul routes.

Sukhoi Superjet 100

Designed, developed and built by Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company (SCAC), in partnership with Alenia Aeronautica, a Finmeccanica Company, the Sukhoi Superjet 100 is a 100 seat regional jet. A further 115-120 seat variant is under study. The SSJ100 is the most advanced and environmentally friendly new generation regional jet.

The first SSJ100 was rolled out from SCAC’s final assembly shop at Komsomolsk-on Amur on September 26th 2007. First flight was successfully accomplished on May 19th 2008.

The Sukhoi Superjet 100 cruises at a Maximum Operating Speed of Mach 0.81 and 40.000 feet. It takes off from a 1.731 meters runway in the basic range and 2.052 meters in the long range. The operating range for the basic version is 3.048 km and 4.578 km for the long range version.

The certification campaign was accomplished with four prototypes for flight testing and two prototypes for static and fatigue trials. The tests show that the aircraft meets all certification requirements.

In February 2011, the SSJ100 obtained the Type Certificate by the Russian Certification Authority IAC AR. The aircraft entered into revenue services with Armavia on April 21, 2011. The EASA Certification is expected to follow in 2011.

Airbus and Rolls-Royce sign agreement for enhanced A350-1000

Today, the CEOs of Airbus and Rolls-Royce, Tom Enders and John Rishton (pictured below), signed the milestone agreement for the joint development of the enhanced Airbus A350-1000 airliner powered by a higher thrust Rolls-Royce Trent XWB turbofan.

The enhanced version of the Trent XWB engine will be fully optimised for the largest member of the A350 XWB Family and will deliver up to 97,000lbs of thrust on takeoff, making it the most powerful engine ever developed for an Airbus aircraft. The extra thrust together with an increased aircraft takeoff weight capability of 308 tonnes will enable airlines to fly the new A350-1000 approximately 400nm further with a full load of 350 passengers, or carry around 4.5 extra tonnes of payload at a given range. Moreover, the A350-1000 will save airlines around 25% of fuel consumed and CO2 emissions compared with its competitor. This will assure the A350-1000’s position as by far the most efficient aircraft in its category.

Airbus undertakes large winglet retrofit evaluation on A320 Family

Large winglets upgrade to bring further fuel efficiency and residual value benefits for in-service A320 Family aircraft

Encouraged by the popular ‘Sharklet’ programme for new A320 Family aircraft, Airbus has decided to pursue a retrofit option of large winglets for the legacy in-service fleet. To this end, Airbus is evaluating the technical, operational and business aspects of a retrofit offering, to provide a solution for A320 Family aircraft currently in service.

Tom Williams, Executive Vice President, Programmes, says: “We are confident that our customers will appreciate not only the benefits from improved fuel efficiency that retrofitting large winglets will bring to their in-service A320 Family fleets, but also from the enhanced residual value."

He adds: “We’ve begun investigating in earnest, and our technical teams are confident that we can develop a retrofit solution. We are committed to making it happen either in-house or with external partners.”

The proposed large winglet retrofit offering will directly benefit from Airbus’ experience in developing the forward-fit Sharklet option for new-build aircraft, for which tests will soon be performed on our flight test A320 MSN1 aircraft.

Available for iPad and iPhone, the free ‘fly-through’ App puts passengers onboard the leading aircraft manufacturer’s innovative Concept Cabin. The App was launched today at Le Bourget Paris Airshow as part of the ‘Future by Airbus’ – a vision of air travel in 2050. The blueprints released last week sent public interest soaring with over 30,000 mentions in social media and half a million hits on You Tube.

Airbus Military and Israel Aerospace Industries join forces on C295 AEW&C Programme

Airbus Military and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) are combining forces to jointly develop and market a new version of the Airbus Military C295 platform fitted with an Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) system produced by ELTA Systems, a wholly owned IAI subsidiary.

The primary sensor of the AEW&C will be the IAI/ELTA 4th Generation Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) Radar with integrated IFF.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to this effect was signed today at the Le Bourget Airshow by IAI Corp. VP and ELTA President, Mr. Nissim Hadas, and Airbus Military CEO Mr. Domingo Ureña. With this agreement, Airbus Military will expand its mission capability to the Airborne Early Warning & Command sector, while ELTA will be expanding its AEW&C fleet to include a turboprop platform.

The C295 AEW&C has been designed to provide high quality 360 Surveillance, creating in real-time an integrated Air and Maritime Situation Picture and Electronic Order of Battle. The AEW&C Situation Picture is shared with friendly forces via Network Centric data links.

A C295 fitted with a rotodome demonstrator is conducting flight trials from Airbus Military's Seville facility since 8th June. The initial tests have shown that the aircraft is aerodynamically an excellent platform for this purpose. ELTA Systems and Airbus Military are now conducting engineering studies to integrate the mission suite, including AESA radar, among other sensors, into the aircraft. The aircraft demonstrator can be seen on the static display at the Le Bourget Airshow.

Providing a new and very cost effective solution in the so far uncovered medium size market, the C295 AEW&C is both rugged and versatile. It can be configured with the full range of AEW&C sensor and control systems, including; AEW Radar, IFF, ESM/ELINT, CSM/COMINT, Self Protection Suite (SPS), Command & Control, Multi-Mode Radar, comprehensive communication suite including Network Centric Operation (NCO) Data Networks and Satellite Links.

Boeing Commercial Airplanes CEO Says Products, Strategy Will Lead Industry

LE BOURGET, France, June 20, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Jim Albaugh said the company is poised for future growth as it prepares to deliver the 787 Dreamliner and 747-8, increases production rates to respond to strong customer demand and develops the market-leading technology and products of the future.

Albaugh made the remarks in a briefing at the 49th Paris Air Show, which features an unprecedented five Boeing commercial airplanes on display.

Boeing announced last week its 2011 Current Market Outlook, which forecasts a market for 33,500 airplanes worth $4 trillion over the next twenty years. With continued strong demand driven by economic growth, Boeing plans to increase production rates for its highly efficient and reliable Next-Generation 737 family to 42 airplanes per month by the first half of 2014. Boeing also has announced future production rate increases for the 747, 777 and 787 programs.
Albaugh outlined the company's disciplined process to determine whether to re-engine the 737, which could enter service in the 2017 timeframe, or introduce a transformational new airplane by 2020.
"Re-engining the Next-Generation 737 is technically viable and a real option for us. What we are working on now is whether that's a good enough answer for the next decades in light of the rising cost of fuel and emerging environmental regulations," Albaugh said.  "One thing is certain: we will always provide more value to our customers than our competition."
By improving aerodynamics and engines, Albaugh said Boeing can deliver a new small airplane that's 20 percent more fuel efficient than its predecessor. "When our competitor says they don't have the technology for a new small airplane until 2030 or even 2035, we believe them," Albaugh said. "We do have the technology as a result of developing the breakthrough 787."
The company also will continue to improve the Next-Generation 737 and reduce fuel burn by an additional two percent this year. "The 737 is a great airplane, and it will remain the leader in the single-aisle market for years to come," Albaugh said. "We will compete vigorously for the heart of this market in the future."
Boeing's efforts to reduce commercial aviation's environmental impact are highlighted by the first transatlantic biofuel flight by a commercial airplane – a new Boeing 747-8 Freighter – which is scheduled to arrive in Paris Monday afternoon. All four engines are being powered by a fuel blend containing 15 percent camelina-based biofuel.
"Boeing is taking aggressive action to reduce global warming. It's good for our customers and for passengers, and it's the right thing to do," Albaugh said. Saudi Arabian Airlines orders more Airbus A330-300s

Saudi Arabian Airlines, Saudi Arabia’s national airline, has placed a firm order for four additional A330-300 aircraft in addition to the eight ordered in July 2008, taking the total order for the type to 12.

Saudi Arabian Airlines placed its first order with Airbus in over 30 years in 2007 for 22 A320 Family aircraft and later placed an order for eight A330s. In 2009, Saudia upsized by converting 15 of the A320 orders into the larger A321. Airbus has so far delivered 17 aircraft (five A320s, four A321s and all eight A330s) from the order for 30 before today.


"We are reaping the benefits of operational efficiency and productivity with our new fleet of A330s, and our passengers love it too. The A330 is an important pillar upon which we are building our ambitious expansion plans by simultaneously meeting rising passenger demand and expectations,” said His Excellency Engineer Khalid Al Molhem, Director General of Saudi Arabian Airlines.

Including leased aircraft, and today’s four A330, in the years to come, Saudia’s Airbus fleet will grow to 62 aircraft.

Airbus and Parker Aerospace join forces in fuel cell technology development to further improve eco-efficiency in aviation

Cooperation brings fuel cell technology for aerospace into new development phase

On its way to developing greener aircraft and significantly reducing emissions, Airbus is developing fuel cell technology as an alternative energy source for on-ground and in-flight electrical power supply. Based on its ongoing engagement with global research programs, Airbus is now extending the scope of its fuel cell R&T activities by partnering with Parker Aerospace, an operating segment of Parker Hannifin Corporation (NYSE:PH), a longtime Airbus supplier with special competencies in multifunctional system integration.

Within this partnership Airbus will be responsible for the overall aircraft system architecture and technology integration into the aircraft, and Parker will supply the multifunctional fuel cell system and manage different subsystem suppliers.

The objective of the cooperation is the development of a technology demonstrator followed by a joint flight test campaign for the middle of the decade, including operational and infrastructural tests. With Parker Aerospace involved in the project from this earliest phase, industrialisation can be considered throughout the development of the process, rather than at the end.

Airbus considers fuel cell technology as a key contributor to meeting the ACARE 2020 goals, which foresee the reduction of CO2 emissions by 50%, NOx emissions by 80% and noise by 50%. Together with its research partners, Airbus successfully performed the first flight test on a civil transport aircraft in 2008, where a fuel cell system provided power for the aircraft’s back-up systems. As a next step, Airbus is currently investigating the application of multifunctional fuel cells as a replacement for the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) to power any electrical consumer of the aircraft, e.g., the cabin. This would enable the replacement of ground power units leading to an emission free ground operation and significantly reduce mission fuel consumption.

The exhaust product is water, and in the case of an air-breathing system, oxygen depleted air. The electricity produced by fuel cells is cleaner and more efficient than combustion engines. In addition, the water and the oxygen depleted air (inert gas) can be used on the airplane to substitute the water and inerting systems.

Boeing Phantom Eye HALE Completes Vibration Tests

ST. LOUIS, June 16, 2011 -- The Boeing [NYSE: BA] Phantom Eye high altitude long endurance (HALE) unmanned airborne system completed 12 days of ground vibration and structural mode interaction tests this month at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif. Phantom Eye is being prepared for its first flight, scheduled for later this summer.

Phantom Eye's two hydrogen fuel tanks also were successfully filled with nitrogen to test fueling procedures and the aircraft's full-fuel weight configuration.

Phantom Eye has a 150-foot wingspan and is powered by two 2.3-liter, four-cylinder hydrogen engines that each provide 150 horsepower. It is designed to fly at 65,000 feet for up to four days; perform intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions; and serve as a communications relay.

Australia Selects U.S. Navy’s MH-60R SEAHAWK® Helicopter for AIR 9000 Phase 8 Program

STRATFORD, Connecticut - The U.S. Navy today announced the Commonwealth of Australia has selected the MH-60R SEAHAWK® helicopter to fulfill the Australian Defence Force’s AIR 9000 Phase 8 requirement for a fleet of 24 new-generation, multi-role naval combat aircraft. The Commonwealth will acquire the helicopters with associated training and logistical support via the U.S. Government’s Foreign Military Sales program.

“The companies that comprise Team Romeo are honored by the Commonwealth’s choice of the MH-60R Romeo helicopter to protect Australia’s maritime interests,” said Mick Maurer, president of Sikorsky Military Systems. “We look forward to collaborating with the Royal Australian Navy and local industry across Australia as we build and integrate these proven SEAHAWK aircraft.”

Team Romeo principals Sikorsky Aircraft Corp., a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX) and Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) have co-developed and delivered maritime helicopters for the U.S. Navy for more than 35 years. They are teamed with engine manufacturer GE Aviation, sonar and sensor provider Raytheon Company, and training and simulator provider CAE for the Phase 8 competition. In addition to delivering Romeo helicopters, the team plans to bring long-term jobs and work opportunities to Australian industry valued at $1.5 billion over 10 years.

“The MH-60R helicopter is a sophisticated sensor platform that has proven its ability to protect the U.S. fleet from submarines, ships and fast attack boats,” said Dan Spoor, Lockheed Martin Aviation Systems vice president. “We are committed to providing the Australian fleet with the same advanced capabilities, as the U.S. Navy continues its investment in the aircraft.”

The Commonwealth of Australia this week signed the Letter of Acceptance, a formal agreement with the U.S. Navy. The Letter of Acceptance marks the first-ever purchase of the U.S. Navy’s MH-60R helicopter outside the United States. The Royal Australian Navy is expected to take delivery of the first two MH-60R helicopters in 2014.

PARIS, France - The Sikorsky CH148 CYCLONE™ helicopter will debut in a static exhibit at the 49th International Paris Air Show, Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. announced today. Sikorsky is a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX).

The aircraft on display was built under Sikorsky’s Canadian Maritime Helicopter Project (CHMP), and is one of 28 CH148 aircraft that will be produced for the Canadian Forces to replace a fleet of SEA KING™ helicopters that have been in operation for almost 50 years.

A multi-mission aircraft, the CYCLONE helicopter addresses the full range of maritime missions including anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW), search and rescue (SAR), and utility missions. It is designed for full spectrum shipboard operations with a deck haul down and handling system, CT7-8 marinized engines, hover refueling and designed-in features for shipboard maintainability. The aircraft has a full glass cockpit with a fully digital fly-by-wire flight control system, automatic blade and tail fold, 360-degree Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR), self-defence suite, passive and active acoustics, Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR), electronic surveillance systems, digital data link and an extensive navigation and communications suite.

The CH148 recently completed another phase of Ship Helicopter Operating Limits Testing, also known as sea trials, performing extremely well and verifying that flight and deck operations can be executed through a growing envelope and demonstrating an ease of maintenance on board. Canadian Forces technicians are now undergoing ground-based training, to be followed by aircrew flight training.

The CH148 CYCLONE is derived from and builds upon the state-of-the-art Sikorsky S-92® search and rescue helicopter now in use with the U.K. Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the Saudi Ministry of Interior, offshore oil operators and other users throughout the world. With the same robust structures and systems, the CYCLONE helicopter offers Navy users maximum availability with reduced inspection and maintenance costs.

Sikorsky has proposed the CYCLONE helicopter, based upon the CH148 CYCLONE helicopter developed for Canada, to the German Navy as a common, low-risk solution to Germany’s helicopter requirements.

España accede al grupo de los países con capacidad media de innovación y sube del puesto 12 al puesto 11 en el Ranking en 2011.

Altran España ha presentado el Índice Altran de Potencial Innovador 2011, un índice de innovación, ciencia y tecnología, que mide la capacidad innovadora y tecnológica de los países de la Unión Europea.

El Índice Altran 2011 permite el análisis y la evaluación de los factores más relacionados con el potencial innovador de los países y la inversión en I+D como porcentaje del PIB, lo que ayuda en la toma de decisiones óptimas para el cumplimiento de los objetivos clave en materia de innovación y tecnología fijados en la Estrategia 2020 de la Unión Europea.

El acto de presentación que ha tenido lugar en la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, ha sido presidido por José Ramón Magarzo, Vicepresidente mundial del Grupo Altran y Presidente Ejecutivo de Altran España y Portugal, y ha contado con la presencia de Juan Tomás Hernani, Secretario General de Innovación del Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación, y Luis Abad, Director General de Altran España. Al mismo, han acudido, además, numerosos representantes de la comunidad empresarial española.

Durante su intervención, el Secretario General de Innovación, Hernani afirmó que, “durante la última década, España ha incrementado de forma continuada los recursos dedicados a investigación científica y desarrollo tecnológico (I+D). Sin embargo, necesitamos realizar un nuevo esfuerzo radical para conseguir sobreponernos a la repetición de esas posiciones del sistema innovador. La Estrategia Estatal de Innovación (e2i) es la respuesta a esa necesidad y se fundamenta en el diagnóstico de la situación de la innovación en España y determina y cuantifica los objetivos que mejorarán la capacidad innovadora de nuestra economía”.

Para José Ramón Magarzo, Vicepresidente Mundial del Grupo Altran y Presidente Ejecutivo de Altran España y Portugal, “la actual situación de crisis económica y financiera internacional por la que están atravesando los países de la Unión Europea hace especialmente necesario el desarrollo de herramientas de evaluación y análisis de innovación como el Índice Altran para lograr modelos de crecimiento económico sostenido y basados en el conocimiento, la innovación y el desarrollo tecnológico”.

El ranking del Índice Altran 2011

Como novedad, se ha ampliado la base de países incluidos pasando de 19 a 25 países, y también se ha construido la matriz Altran, que posiciona a cada país con respecto a su capacidad de innovación y su inversión en I+D, y se ha determinado el potencial de mejora en innovación de cada país en este ámbito.

En la edición del Índice Altran 2011 la gran mayoría de los países sufren una disminución de su valor del Índice Altran con respecto al año 2010, salvo Islandia, España, Noruega, Finlandia, Bélgica e Irlanda, que presentan una mejora en sus valores del Índice Altran 2011, demostrando la solidez de los avances logrados en la anterior edición del Índice Altran y desde 2005.

Finlandia, Suecia, Islandia y Dinamarca –en este orden- encabezan el Índice Altran como países europeos con mayor capacidad de innovación. Todos, salvo Islandia, también lideraban el ranking de innovación en 2010. Estos cuatro países alcanzan valores por encima de 0,75 en el Índice. En este caso el liderato del Índice Altran 2011 lo logra Finlandia, en lugar de Suecia, que encabezaba el Índice Altran en 2005 y 2010. Islandia sufre una mejora relativa importante, pasando del puesto 7 en 2010 al tercer puesto en 2011.

Dentro de los países con Capacidad Media de Innovación, además de la novedosa presencia de España en esta edición 2011, se encuentran otros países como Noruega, Irlanda, Bélgica, Francia, Holanda, Alemania, Reino Unido, Austria o Estonia; todos ellos con valores del Índice Altran entre 0,40 y 0,71

España sube del puesto 12 al puesto 11 en Ranking entre 2010 y 2011, ocupando una posición intermedia dentro del grupo de los países con capacidad media de innovación, con lo que mejora su potencial de innovación al pasar del grupo de países con capacidad baja (que ya encabezaba tanto en 2005 y 2010) a entrar en el grupo de países de capacidad media, adelantando a Reino Unido en el Ranking de países según su capacidad innovadora.

El análisis de la capacidad innovadora por ámbito geográfico muestra una menor capacidad de innovación tanto en los países periféricos del sur y este de Europa. Las economías de capacidad media se encuentran principalmente en Europa Central, Noruega, Irlanda, Reino Unido, Estonia o España. Los países de capacidad innovadora alta, se corresponden con países del Norte de Europa.

Con respecto al indicador de Inversión en I+D como % del PIB, España ocupa el puesto 16º en la edición 2011 del Índice con valor del 1,39% del PIB (dato correspondiente al año 2009, último año con información validada por la UE). Este ranking lo lideran nuevamente países nórdicos como Suecia, Finlandia y Dinamarca, que tienen un alto potencial innovador.

Componentes del Índice Altran 2010

El Índice Altran se basa en un modelo matemático que relaciona los valores de 4 componentes con la variable inversión en I+D como % del PIB.

• Población activa con educación superior: el ranking lo encabezan de nuevo países del norte de Europa como son Finlandia, Estonia y Noruega. España ocupa la posición 12 del ranking y desciende dos puestos con respecto al año 2010 con un porcentaje cercano al 30%. Cierran el ranking con un porcentaje inferior al 20% un grupo de siete países entre los que se encuentran Austria y Hungría, y de los cuales, tres no superan el 15% como es el caso de Portugal, Italia y Rumanía.

• Empleo en servicios de alta tecnología: tiene en cuenta el porcentaje de trabajadores en sectores tales como las telecomunicaciones, las TIC o los servicios I+D. El ranking sitúa en primer lugar a Suecia con un 4,23 % de empleo en estos servicios, seguida de Islandia y Finlandia. España, con un valor del 2,98% para este indicador ocupa el puesto número 10 del ranking, por encima de la media comunitaria (2,62%) y experimenta un crecimiento del 20% con respecto a los resultados de 2010 (2,44%)

• Investigadores en sector empresa: representa el porcentaje de investigadores que aporta el sector privado al sistema de innovación. Austria, Suecia y Dinamarca al igual que en 2010, superan el 60% acercándose al objetivo fijado por la Unión Europea para 2010 en la Cumbre del Lisboa de que dos tercios de la I+D total de los países se realicen por parte del sector privado empresarial. España se encuentra en la posición número 15 con un 34,49% de investigadores en el sector privado, y asciende un puesto en el ranking pese a registrar un ligero decremento de -2,6% en este indicador con respecto al año 2010 (35,45 %).

• Empresas con acceso a Internet de banda ancha: el uso y la adopción de las TIC, como el despliegue de la banda ancha en el acceso a Internet de las empresas es uno de los factores que mejoran el potencial de innovación. España ocupa el 2º puesto del ranking con una penetración de banda ancha superior al 94% cuando la media de la UE se sitúa en torno al 83%.

La capacidad de innovación de España

En la presente edición, España se sitúa en una posición intermedia en los países de capacidad media, el 7º de 10 países que forman este grupo. En el ranking del Índice Altran 2011, España está en la posición número 11 del ranking entre un total de 25 países, mejorando un puesto en el ranking con respecto a 2010.

Esto supone para España pasar de encabezar el grupo de países de Capacidad Baja de Innovación a estar incluida en el grupo de países de Capacidad Media de Innovación.

Los objetivos de crecimiento para España están relacionados con la capacidad innovadora actual del país y sus diferentes agentes y su finalidad sería la de adoptar las medidas necesarias para el cambio y la mejora del sistema de innovación, ciencia y tecnología en nuestro país. Así, el estudio plantea una serie de metas a corto y a largo plazo para posicionar a España entre las economías más innovadoras.

• Indicador de población activa con educación superior: España está en línea con las posiciones intermedias de los países del Índice y necesita un incremento moderado a medio plazo (318.000 personas). A largo plazo debería incrementar en algo más de 1.059.000 personas para situarse en los niveles de los países de capacidad alta.

• Indicador de trabajadores en servicios de alta tecnología: nuestro país cuenta en la actualidad con un número suficiente de empleos en este tipo de sectores. Para el largo plazo se deberían incrementar los empleos en este sector en cerca de 200.000 personas, lo que supondría un aumento del 35% respecto a los niveles actuales de 2011.

• Indicador de número de investigadores en el sector empresa: El aspecto prioritario de mejora en esta edición del Índice Altran 2011 para España. Debería crecer en el medio plazo en algo más de 21.000 trabajadores y en el largo plazo en una cifra cercana a los 90.000 investigadores frente a los 46.149 existentes en la actualidad (un incremento del 67%).

• Indicador de empresas con acceso de banda ancha: No sería necesario realizar ningún incremento al tener ya un valor adecuado.

Cebu Pacific to order 30 A321neo aircraft

Cebu Pacific of the Philippines has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Airbus for the purchase of 30 A321neo aircraft. The carrier has also exercised existing options for seven more standard A320s, increasing to 41 its total firm orders for the Airbus single aisle product line. The aircraft will join an existing fleet of A319s and A320s flying on the carrier's fast growing domestic and regional network.

"The A320 Family has played a key role in enabling us to build an efficient, profitable, value-based business," said Lance Gokongwei, Cebu Pacific President and CEO. "The addition of more A320s and the A321neo allows us to expand further in the Asia-Pacific region, and continue offering our trademark low fares."

Cebu Pacific's extensive network covers 33 domestic and 16 international destinations, including Osaka, Seoul (Incheon), Beijing, Jakarta, Bangkok and Singapore.

"We are pleased that Cebu Pacific has reaffirmed its commitment to the A320 Family and is also now set to add the A321neo to its fleet," said John Leahy, Chief Operating Officer, Customers, Airbus. "With the A321neo Cebu Pacific will be able to fly more people further at significantly lower cost per seat than any other competing aircraft, and with less impact on the environment."

The A321neo is the largest model in the recently launched A320neo series, which incorporates new engines and large wing tip devices called sharklets. The advances will deliver fuel savings of 15 percent and additional range capability of over 500 nautical miles (950 kilometers), or the ability to carry two tonnes more payload at a given range. For the environment, the fuel savings translate into some 3,600 tonnes less CO2 per aircraft per year. In addition, the aircraft will provide a double-digit reduction in NOx emissions and reduced engine noise.

The A320 Family (A318, A319, A320 and A321) is recognised as the benchmark single-aisle aircraft family. Over 7,000 A320 Family aircraft have already been ordered and more than 4,700 delivered to more than 330 customers and operators worldwide. The A320neo series will have over 95% airframe commonality with the existing models, enabling it to fit seamlessly into existing A320 Family fleets

The new engines types offered on the A320neo Family are CFM International’s LEAP-X and Pratt & Whitney’s PurePower PW1100G.
