http://www.infodefensa.com/esp/noticias/noticias.asp?cod=2623&n=Airbus-Military-corrige-un-problema-de-vibraci%F3n-en-las-h%E9lices-del-A400M

Air Force looks to replace aging T-38s

The next approach to teaching future Air Force pilots — be it a jet, a simulator or a mix of both — must be reasonably priced but do as good of a job as the aging trainer it will replace, according to the official in charge of analyzing the options.

Fighter and bomber pilots have been learning to fly some version of the T-38 Talon for the last 50 years and the time has come to find a successor, said Gen. Stephen Lorenz, outgoing commander of Air Education and Training Command at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas.

“It takes years to procure a new trainer, so we need to start the process now,” Lorenz said. “The T-38 is getting old.

http://www.elpais.com/articulo/empresas/sectores/tortas/sector/aeronautico/elpepueconeg/20100829elpnegemp_4/Tes

GULFSTREAM G650 REACHES MACH 0.995. Accomplishment Establishes G650 As World’s Fastest Civil Aircraft

sábado, 28 de agosto de 2010

SAVANNAH, Ga., August 26, 2010 - Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. announced today that its ultra-long-range, ultra-large-cabin Gulfstream G650 recently reached Mach 0.995 as part of its 1,800-hour flight-test program.

The aircraft achieved this speed during flutter testing, which evaluates the aircraft’s damping responses following an input from an external test device. Flutter testing is performed at a variety of frequencies, speeds, altitudes, weights and centers of gravity.

For the initial series of flutter tests, the aircraft achieved clearance out to both its design dive speed (Vd) and design Mach dive speed (Md) at altitudes ranging from 10,000 feet to up to the aircraft’s maximum certified altitude of 51,000 feet.

In order to achieve the maximum speed of Mach 0.995, Gulfstream experimental test pilots Tom Horne and Gary Freeman along with flight test engineer Bill Osborne took Serial Number (S/N) 6001 into a dive, pitching the aircraft’s nose 16 to 18 degrees below the horizon. During the dive, flutter exciters introduced a range of vibration frequencies to the wing, tail and flight control surfaces to ensure the aircraft naturally dampened out the oscillations without further action from the pilots. Even under such extreme circumstances, the G650 performed flawlessly.

“The airplane is very predictable,” said Horne, senior experimental test pilot, Gulfstream. “It’s very easy to control and to get precise control at those speeds. The airplane response has matched the expectations of our engineers, and we’ve been able to easily fly the test conditions and march through the test plan.”

During the flutter test missions, a team of multi-disciplinary engineers in Gulfstream’s state-of-the-art telemetry center in Savannah monitored the aircraft’s behavior and determined real-time the damping characteristics of the aircraft. The vibration frequencies exerted on the aircraft ranged from 2 hertz, or twice per second, to 58 hertz, or about as fast as a fluorescent light flickers.

“We’re doing very well,” said Pres Henne, senior vice president of Programs, Engineering and Test, Gulfstream. “The demonstrated flutter margins met or exceeded our expectations out to maximum speeds. That’s a good sign.”

As S/N 6001 continued with flutter testing, S/N 6005 completed initial phase manufacturing and began engine testing. S/N 6005 is the fifth and final aircraft in the G650 flight-test program. Each aircraft in the program has a specific purpose, with S/N 6001 focused on envelope expansion, air data calibration, flutter, in-flight performance and flight controls. S/N 6002 is used to evaluate the aircraft’s systems as well as its takeoff and landing performance, while S/N 6003 tests the avionics, in-flight load measurement and ice protection system. S/N 6004 will be the first G650 outfitted and tested with a full interior, which is currently being installed. S/N 6005 will participate in the reduced vertical separation minimum testing.

The G650 flight-test program officially began on Nov. 25, 2009. Through Aug. 25, the four airplanes currently flying in the program have completed more than 170 flights and 575 flight-test hours.

Shape-shifting UAV designed for stormy sea rescues

http://www.gizmag.com/shape-shifting-marine-rescue-uav/16161/

People often need to be rescued at sea because of stormy weather – exactly the kind of conditions in which it is not safe to fly. Nonetheless, fully-crewed helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft are regularly sent out into such weather to perform maritime rescues, endangering both the crew and the expensive aircraft themselves. Soon, however, a new type of unmanned remote-control aircraft may be able to do the job. Not only would flight crews be kept out of harm’s way, but as demonstrated by a functioning prototype, the aircraft would outperform conventional planes in rough weather, thanks to shape-shifting technology.

Rolls-Royce Files Patent Infringement Complaint

http://www.aero-news.net/news/commair.cfm?ContentBlockID=8202c5a9-f445-4be8-84b1-fb9a7d44bb8f&Dynamic=1

Technologies Corporation (UTC) of the Rolls-Royce swept fan blade patent in the Federal Court for the Eastern District of Virginia in the United States. The complaint specifically alleges that the fan stages on the Engine Alliance GP7200 engine and on UTC’s PW1000G engine (also known as the Geared Turbofan) infringe the Rolls-Royce patent. The complaint also alleges that a number of other UTC aero civil engines infringe the Rolls-Royce patent. Rolls-Royce is seeking damages and injunctions.

The origins of this case date back to the late 1990s. The dispute was initiated by UTC when it applied to the US Patent Office to have the Rolls-Royce swept fan blade patent struck out. UTC’s efforts were unsuccessful and the validity of the Rolls-Royce patent has been upheld in the United States.

Airbus-led ‘AIRE2’ trials to spearhead green trajectories with A380

Typical A380 transatlantic flight could reduce CO2 emissions by three tonnes

An Airbus-led consortium in partnership with Air France and the air navigation service providers from UK, Canada and the US (NATS, Nav Canada and the FAA) will shortly commence ‘Transatlantic Green Flight’ (TGF) trials with an Air France A380 on revenue flights from New York (JFK) to Paris (CDG). Under a recent contract from the SESAR Joint Undertaking (SJU), these A380 TGF trials are part of the second wave the Atlantic Interoperability Initiative to reduce Emissions – “AIRE2”. The first phase, AIRE, was jointly launched by the European Commission and the FAA in June 2007 at the Paris Air Show.

The TGF flights, for which Airbus has brought together numerous parties, are due to take place over a six to eight week period commencing in the fourth quarter of 2010. These will cover the optimisation of the taxi-out procedure at John F. Kennedy airport, as well as the en-route leg over the Atlantic. Overall it is estimated that each A380 flight can reduce CO2 emissions by around three tonnes, compared with existing procedures.

“These transatlantic flight trials will help to move the industry towards more efficient operational concepts and sustainable growth over the longer term,” says Charles Champion, Executive Vice President of Engineering at Airbus. He adds: “What we trial today with the A380 will contribute to setting tomorrow’s standards, thanks to system-wide Air Traffic Management improvements prepared by programmes like SESAR and NextGen.”

TGF operational contributions: The FAA will support Air France to start each trial with a fuel-saving ‘reduced engine taxi’ from the gate to the runway at JFK. This will be enabled via estimates of taxi time, allowing for A380 taxiing powered by only two of its four engines. Meanwhile, NATS and Nav Canada will facilitate the Atlantic portion of the flight which will reduce CO2 emissions through an optimized trajectory where more flexibility will be arranged for speed, altitude and lateral routing. This trajectory takes advantage of the A380’s high optimum cruise altitude of 39,000ft and above.

Additional AIRE2 projects – ‘VINGA’ & ‘Green Shuttle’
Airbus is also engaged as a partner in two further AIRE2 trials: ‘VINGA’ and ‘Green Shuttle’. VINGA, which builds on the experience of last year’s AIRE ‘MINT’ flight trials (with Novair and Swedish Air Navigation Service provider LFV), will now for the first time validate a transition from a curved RNP 0.3 arrival to an ILS approach at Gothenburg Landvetter Airport. This operational implementation will be facilitated by Airbus’ RNP services subsidiary, Quovadis. Meanwhile, the ‘Green Shuttle’ project, in partnership with Air France and the French air navigation service provider DSNA, seeks to optimize all phases of the airline’s ‘La Navette’ flights between Paris-Orly and Toulouse which are operated with A320 Family aircraft.

video: Lockheed Martin new UCAV

appearances are deceptive. Various is not a fast jet despite its swept wings and tails: it is designed for a 220 knot cruise speed, mainly to address a Marine requirement for a UCAV that can match the speed of the V-22. Top speed is 320 knots and it can loiter efficiently at 160 knots.

So why the swept wings? The semi-blended design with the long-chord inner wings is needed to provide a home for the lift fans on the vehicle's center of gravity. At the same time, sweepback is needed to balance the vehicle properly. And the big V-tails are not there for high-g maneuvering, but to provide adequate control authority during transition.

Airship Industry Prepares for Liftoff

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703959704575453391253582542.html

The turning point has been the U.S. Army's award earlier this year of a contract to Northrop Grumman Corp. to design and build as many as three football-field-size airships that will sit high over Afghanistan, monitoring everything that moves over hundreds of square miles.

The military already uses unmanned aerial vehicles for surveillance, intelligence and combat operations. Now, the coming unmanned long-endurance multi- intelligence vehicle, or LEMV, will patrol for three weeks at time, sending a constant stream of data to operators below, at a fraction of the operating cost of current unmanned aerial vehicles.

The Army's sudden interest in the technology that it pioneered in its basic form as the spotter balloon is, in part, related to the need to step up surveillance and intelligence to help compensate for the drop in troop numbers. "We're exchanging technology for people," says Alan Metzger, head of Northrop's LEMV program.

http://elblogdelvuelo.es/el-mejor-momento-para-reservar-un-vuelo-seria-unas-8-semanas-antes-segun-dos-economistas.html

In 2008, Rockwell demonstrated that ASAC could recover a scale model of an F/A-18 Hornet after 60 per cent of one wing was blown off in flight. In more recent tests unveiled today, the same kind of model landed safely after losing both part of the wing and 30 per cent of the right-hand empennage, and landed - raggedly but intact - with 80 per cent of one wing gone.

David Vos, senior director of Rockwell Collins Control Technologies, says that the company is not able to identify its operational application but said that "all of you will know it when you see it, and it is a program of record." As with the Hornet model tests, extensive simulation work will be followed by subscale tests in which pieces will be removed from the aircraft.

The revelation of two all-new aircraft concepts from Northrop Grumman show the manufacturer is planning an aggressive new push to expand deeper into the market for unmanned air vehicles.

The two concept designs - MQ-X and MUVR - also are the first glimpse inside Northrop's internal strategy for addressing two of the US military's potential requirements in the next decade.

MQ-X is the US Air Force term for a future replacement of the General Atomics MQ-1 Predator/MQ-9 family of UAVs.

http://plandevuelo.es/wordpress/archives/461

FAA starts considering private space travel rules

http://www.mercurynews.com/breaking-news/ci_15852156?nclick_check=1

Private space travel is expected to take off in the next couple of years, and aviation officials and industry officials hope to have figured out by then how to keep a space rocket out of the way of an airline jet, how to prepare passengers for flight and other logistical matters.

The Federal Aviation Administration announced this week a partnership with universities and industry groups to address those challenges facing commercial space transportation.

"If the plans of people like Sir Richard Branson of Virgin Galactic are accurate, in the next three to five years there will be very frequent space tourism launches," said Scott Hubbard, a professor of astronautics and aeronautics at Stanford University.

"That means you've got to clear the air space and if it's very frequent you've got to be sure to manage that together with airplanes going by," he said.

Flight 2294 experienced "rapid decompression while in cruise flight at approximately 35,000 ft. when the fuselage crown skin ruptured just forward of the vertical stabilizer," according to NTSB. It said magnified inspections of the fracture area revealed "surfaces indicative of fatigue progress." During the July 13 flight, "the fatigue cracking penetrated the fuselage skin and created an approximate 18-inch by 12-inch flap in the skin that depressurized the airplane," the board stated.

http://www.infodefensa.com/esp/noticias/noticias.asp?cod=2605&n=Canad%E1-e-Israel-confirman-la-adquisici%F3n-de-85-cazas-F-35-mientras-que-Jap%F3n-pospone-su-decisi%F3n

A possible solution for building small, powerful, airborne lasers that can be carried by manned or unmanned aircraft is a design that combines solid-state and gas-based technologies, says the Pentagon’s missile defense chief.

A small laser in a small aircraft – far different from the chemical laser carried by the U.S. Air Force’s 747 testbed – is considered necessary for operational practicality. The mission envisioned is Boost Phase Intercept of enemy ballistic missiles.

Sub-Sonex "Teeny " Jet: Re-Engined and Ready for Flight Test

Even Smaller Than A Micro-Jet, 'Monnett's Madness' Has Produced Something Even Cooler Than Usual
I think John Monnett is nuts... a pure, certifiable, grade-A, crazy-man... and in the best of all possible ways. His inspired madness has not only brought forth some great airplanes that have furnished the necessary means (and yes, madness) by which hundreds, even thousands, of pilots (overall) have managed to keep their hearts, minds and bodies in the world of flight, but he shows NO signs of slowing down. And for that, aviation is a better (and more affordable) place.

One of the most divinely inspired bits of craziness has led John to develop a teeny-tiny single-place jet airplane that will cost less to build and fly than most APUs used by the civil jet fleet. And better yet; the SubSonex single-place jet aircraft is about to resume testing. Following a series of initial high-speed taxi tests, the Sonex Aircraft Hornets' Nest Research and Development team determined that a review and modification of the aircraft design was necessary to achieve acceptable handling qualities for the average pilot. Due to the increased power offered by the new PBS TJ-100 engine selected for the SubSonex, it was determined that a tricycle gear configuration would be needed to increase yaw stability on the ground in the transition phase approaching takeoff speeds.

Unveiled at AirVenture 2009 under the banner of the Hornets' Nest Research and Development program, the SubSonex jet was intended as an effort to study the feasibility and marketability of a small, single-place homebuilt jet aircraft. The SubSonex has attracted a tremendous level of interest from the public and aviation press, however, Sonex Aircraft, LLC has not yet decided if the aircraft will become an available homebuilt aircraft product. Following first flight of the aircraft and a full series of flight tests, Hornets' Nest designers plan to construct a second SubSonex prototype with a larger cockpit, enhanced landing gear system and other refinements to further evaluate the aircraft concept.

UAV: Orion to challenge with 'extreme persistence'

http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2010/08/16/346114/orion-to-challenge-with-extreme-persistence.html

A new kind of aircraft is poised to enter a crowded market for medium-altitude, fixed-wing surveillance aircraft, offering “extreme persistence” as its competitive trump card.

Virginia-based Aurora Flight Sciences plans to launch flight tests for the Orion unmanned aircraft system by the end of the year and demonstrate 120h, or five-day, endurance before October.

The Orion marks yet another expression of the Department of Defense’s desire to flood the skies over Afghanistan with never-ending surveillance coverage of virtually the entire country.

...

The Orion does not seek to introduce extreme persistence at the cost of requiring liquid hydrogen, which as a fuel source has proved popular in high-altitude experiments, but is difficult to store and can be dangerous to handle.

Rather, Aurora’s medium-altitude alternative to a host of both manned and unmanned surveillance already clogging the market space relies on standard military aviation fuels to create energy

http://www.laopinion.es/economia/2010/08/15/huelga-aeropuertos-britanicos--amenaza-recuperacion-turismo/299375.html

DARPA eyes space-based Internet for persistent battlefield data communications, surveillance, and satellite control

http://www.militaryaerospace.com/index/display/article-display.articles.military-aerospace-electronics.online-news-2.2010.8.darpa-eyes_space-based.QP129867.dcmp=rss.page=1.html

Satellite communications experts at the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in Arlington, Va., are taking the next step in developing broadband data communications links to orbiting satellite constellations, not only to establish persistent SATCOM  capability for fighting forces in the field, but also to enable real-time control of satellites from military theaters of operation.

The ability to control clusters of satellites from military theaters of operation like Iraq and Afghanistan not only could help establish predictable, round-the-clock satellite communications links for forward-deployed warfighters, but also has the potential to help establish controllable, persistent surveillance capability for the military commanders in the field who need it most.

DARPA awarded an $18 million research contract Friday to Inmarsat plc in London for the Persistent Broadband Ground Connectivity for Spacecraft in Low Earth Orbit program, which seeks to enable near-24/7, very-low-latency, on-demand broadband connectivity between ground satellite terminals and spacecraft in low earth orbit (LEO).

Stinger and Igla have dual-mode seekers that blend infrared and ultraviolet sensors able to distinguish aircraft from flare countermeasures. To defeat these advanced anti-aircraft missiles, something more sophisticated is necessary, such as the Guardian directional infrared countermeasure (DIRCM) system, which uses ultraviolet sensors to detect incoming missiles, and a laser to defeat the missile's guidance system. Guardian directs a laser at the incoming missile's seeker to cause guidance errors and induce the missile to fly harmlessly off course.

http://www.aviaciondigitalglobal.com/noticia.asp?NotId=13985&NotDesignId=4

The Future of Electric Aircraft

jueves, 12 de agosto de 2010

http://www.amtonline.com/online/printer.jsp?id=11555

It can only fly for 15 minutes but it is a breakthrough all the same. Improved batteries have finally made a manned electric helicopter a reality. It follows rapidly on announcements of all electric fixed wing aircraft from Germany (PC-Aero), France (EADS), Italy (SkySpark), China (Luneec) and the USA (Sonex etc) and an historic 24 hour flight by Solar Impulse powered entirely by the sun. Solar Impulse has the wingspan of an Airbus (over 200 feet) and carries 11,628 solar cells to power four motors.

For a few years, all-electric power assisted gliders and hang gliders have been available. Advantages of electric aircraft include improved manoeuvrability due to the greater torque from electric motors, increased safety due to decreased chance of mechanical failure, less risk of explosion or fire in the event of a collision, and less noise. There will be environmental and cost benefits associated with the elimination of consumption of fossil fuels and resultant emissions. As with on-road vehicles, the problem is range - the best range of both being 160- 400 km (about 100-250 miles) in practicable manned configuration.

Some of the fixed wing pure electric aircraft and other electric flying vehicles are now available in kit form. The SkySpark pure electric fixed wing aircraft has reached 155 mph (300 kph) though 100 mph is more typical of such aircraft, and they have flight time of 1 to 3 hours. The SkySpark experiment is based on a two-seat Pioneer Alpi 300 powered by a 75 kW (100.5 horsepower for the nostalgic) electric motor using brushless technology and lithium polymer batteries.

Air Force looks for machine autonomy to enable UAVs and piloted aircraft to work and play well together

http://www.militaryaerospace.com/index/display/article-display/0434182172/articles/military-aerospace-electronics/volume-21/issue-8/news/news/air-force_looks_for.html

U.S. Air Force researchers are asking industry to develop autonomous control technologies that will enable unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to operate together with piloted aircraft in congested airport terminal areas, and to achieve what the Air Force calls "same base, same time, same tempo" operations.

Scientists at the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, have released a broad agency announcement (BAA-10-05-PKV) for the Autonomous Control of UAS Ground Operations in the Terminal Area program. The goal of the program is to enable UAVs to operate with manned aircraft by equipping unmanned aerial systems (UAS) to act autonomously and react like a manned aircraft so they can navigate the terminal area alongside manned commercial and general aviation aircraft. The emphasis of this program is on ground operations, according to U.S. Air Force officials.

Aerojet Successfully Demonstrates Next Generation Solid Ramjet Fuel

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Aug. 10, 2010 – Aerojet, a GenCorp (NYSE: GY) company, announced today that it has successfully tested an advanced solid ramjet fuel in an engine ground test. The fuel is being developed to provide long-range, high-speed capability for the U.S. military and potentially for the future USAF/Navy Joint Dual Role Air Dominance Missile (JDRADM).

Ramjet engines have historically used liquid fuel which mixes with atmospheric air in order to provide thrust at high speed. However, for tactical missiles, the military services have expressed interest in a storable solid fuel. In order to meet this need, Aerojet developed the world’s first throttleable solid-fueled ramjet for the U.S. Navy GQM-163A Coyote missile target starting in the year 2000. Since that time, Aerojet has been developing a family of advanced formulations called AerGen™ fuels with properties suitable for a tactical missile ramjet engine. The fuel burns very efficiently, resulting in more delivered energy and reduced visible exhaust.

The ground testing was conducted at Aerojet’s Airbreathing Test Facility located in Orange County, Va. A full-scale engine was tested at conditions simulating high-altitude, high-speed flight. “Our airbreathing propulsion business represents cutting-edge technology aimed at future military requirements,” said Aerojet Vice President and Deputy to the President, Dick Bregard. “Aerojet is proud to demonstrate our commitment to advancing our country’s military capability through this innovative ramjet fuel research.”

Aerojet is a world-recognized aerospace and defense leader principally serving the missile and space propulsion, defense and armaments markets. GenCorp is a leading technology-based manufacturer of aerospace and defense products and systems with a real estate segment that includes activities related to the entitlement, sale, and leasing of the company’s excess real estate assets. Additional information about Aerojet and GenCorp can be obtained by visiting the companies’ Web sites at http://www.Aerojet.com and http://www.GenCorp.com.
