Turning Scrap Wood into Strong, Sustainable Materials for Re-use

According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, more than 80% of solid waste produced on Department of Defense (DoD) forward operating bases consists of scrap wood, cardboard, and paper.1 This equates to almost 13 pounds of waste per soldier per day, often disposed of in landfills or buried on-site. DARPA's new Waste Upcycling for Defense (WUD) program aims to research and develop an end-to-end process for turning scrap wood and other cellulosic waste streams such as cardboard and paper into lightweight, strong, and sustainable materials for re-use in multiple DoD environments.

NOVA | Wings of Madness | TV Program Description | PBS

In the early 1900s, the most acclaimed celebrity in Europe, and arguably the world, was a fashionable, frail, Brazilian-born aviator named Alberto Santos-Dumont. The first to fly an airplane in Europe, Santos also built and flew the first practical dirigibles, or powered balloons. At a period when most balloons were at the mercy of the wind and many still thought the airplane an impossibility, Santos's bold exploits created a sensation. He was the spiritual father of aviation, and at the same time, a flying P.T. Barnum, intrepidly demonstrating his incredible flying machines in Paris, London, New York, and St. Louis.

But Santos's burst of glory was short-lived. When the secretive Wright brothers finally unveiled their flying machine in France in 1908, Wilbur's piloting skills dazzled the public and instantly eclipsed Santos's fame. Over the next three decades, Santos slipped gradually into illness and despair until he finally committed suicide, tormented by knowing that the airplane, which he believed to be his invention, had become a lethal weapon of war.

Based on the acclaimed biography by Paul Hoffman, "Wings of Madness" tells the colorful and tragic life of this neglected pioneer,…

Cool: Airbus A400M Flies 22 Hours Non-Stop With Aerial Refueling

The Royal Air Force's Airbus A400M Atlas completed a unique mission, flying nonstop from RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire to Guam, traveling 22 hours and over 7,000 miles. This was made possible by the support of two Airbus A330MRTT Voyagers, which provided aerial refueling thrice during the ultra-long-haul journey. The flight is now the longest on record by the A400M and is part of the RAF's Pacific air exercises.

Aviation Coalition Urges Caution on DOT Part 380 Air Carrier Changes

In letters written by NBAA, the National Air Transportation Association, and Helicopter Association International—among others, the organizations stressed that a Part 380 application "has been misused by economic competitors that, with no evidence of safety and security concerns, seeks to prevent Part 135 operators from conducting public charter [Part 380] flights. Their unsubstantiated claims do a disservice to this well-established regulatory framework and the safe, secure transportation services its operators provide to the traveling public."

Wing of Tomorrow Demonstrators

The three 17metre full scale wings demonstrators include:

  • Static wing demonstrator - used to test structural capabilities of new designs and materials and to validate our analysis.

  • Fully-equipped demonstrator - used to test installation technologies and novel approaches to equipping the next generation of wings with systems.

  • Run@rate demonstrator - will test industrial capability and automation technologies to assess how we can build wings at the scale and speed we need to.

Folding wingtip technology

Airbus' folding wingtip technology looks at increasing the span of the wing to increase lift, reduce drag and to improve fuel efficiency without the need to alter existing airport infrastructure.
