Russia has begun flying a stealthy fifth-generation fighter to rival the U.S. F-22, but Western analysts question whether Sukhoi can develop and deliver the aircraft by 2015 as promised.

Sukhoi's T-50, which made its 47-min. first flight on Jan. 29 from the KnAAPO facility in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, is the prototype of the PAK FA "future front-line aircraft," the first new-generation fighter for the Russian air force since the Su-27 Flanker entered service in 1984. India plans to co-fund development and co-produce the new aircraft.

The aircraft is clearly shaped for stealth, with the chined forward fuselage, planform edge alignment, internal weapons bays and small vertical tails. The T-50 shows resemblances to the F-22 Raptor, but also reflects its Su-27 heritage in the wide "centroplane" that blends the fuselage and wing.

http://www.eads.com/1024/es/pressdb/pressdb/20100209_astrium_defence.html

Into a Greener Future of Aviation Industry: EADS and A*STAR’s ICES to Collaborate on Biofuels

Singapore, 04  February  2010

A*STAR's Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences (ICES) is entering into a collaborative project with EADS, a global leader in aerospace and defence, to investigate the conversion of algae oil to kerosene for jet fuel. The agreement has been signed by Dr. PK Wong, Deputy Director (Research) of ICES and Mr. Yann Barbaux, Head of EADS Innovation Works, witnessed by representatives from both parties. This collaboration is a follow up on the Master Research Collaboration Agreement (MRCA) signed by EADS and A*STAR on 20 February 2008.

The objective of this 12 month collaboration is to assess the potential for microalgae to be a renewable source of fuel for aircraft and to investigate the conversion of algae oil to kerosene for use as jet fuel.

Air transportation is a vital contributor to development and to global economic growth. The aviation sector accounts for 2-3 per cent of man-made CO2 emissions, and although this may be a small proportion, EADS recognises that growth in air transportation must be sustainable. So far, fuel burn has been kept down by improving aircraft and engine efficiency and a more radical solution is the use of bio-fuels made from sustainable and renewable sources such as algae.

Plant derived biofuels can be considered as renewable fuel since plants 'fix' atmospheric carbon dioxide as they grow, which is then released when the biofuel is combusted. There is no net contribution to greenhouse gas emissions over the long term, unlike the combustion of conventional fossil fuels. However, the area productivity of most of the traditional plants used as bioenergy crops is too low to be a viable source of the feedstock used for making biofuel.

Microalgae are much more efficient than plants at converting solar energy and carbon dioxide into fixed biomass. This brings the possibility of using microalgae in renewable production of hydrocarbon fuels that is not in competition with food production for scarce land resources.

There is significant interest across multiple sectors in the potential of microalgae as an energy source. They have the potential to produce nearly 90,000 litres of oil per hectare per year. Microalgae grow rapidly (doubling in biomass in as little as a few hours), require limited nutrients to thrive, but technological breakthroughs are needed for them to become viable. Some microalgae contain high levels of oil content which can be used as the feedstock for making jet fuel, for example by separation of fatty acids, hydrogenation and hydro-cracking.

Mr. Yann Barbaux, Head of EADS Innovation Works, stated: "As a systems architect of airplanes, it is our responsibility to foster research on biofuels, even if we are not directly involved in the energy business. This collaboration with A*STAR will add the impressive skills, efficiency and determination of the Singaporean research and technology community to our efforts."

Dr Keith Carpenter, Executive Director of ICES, commented, "I am happy that we can collaborate with EADS on this project. We hope that we can prove to the world that microalgae can be the solution for much cheaper and much more efficient source of fuel that can benefit the aviation industry and make air travel more environmentally sustainable."

Boeing 747-8 Freighter Successfully Completes First Flight

EVERETT, Wash., Feb. 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Boeing (NYSE: BA) 747-8 Freighter successfully took to the sky for the first time today before more than 5,000 employees, customers, suppliers and community leaders. The flight begins a test program for the world's most efficient freighter.

With 747 Chief Pilot Mark Feuerstein and Capt. Tom Imrich in the flight deck, the newest member of the 747 family took off at 12:39 p.m. local time from Paine Field in Everett and landed at Paine Field at 4:18 p.m.

"It was a real privilege to be at the controls of this great airplane on its first flight, representing the thousands of folks who made today possible," said Feuerstein. "The airplane performed as expected and handled just like a 747-400."

Today's flight was the first of more than 1,600 flight hours in the test program for the newest member of the Boeing freighter family. The airplane followed a route over Western Washington, where it underwent tests for basic handling qualities and engine performance. The airplane reached a cruising altitude of 17,000 feet (5,181 m) and a speed of up to 230 knots, or about 264 miles (426 km) per hour.

Powered by four General Electric GEnx-2B engines, the 747-8 Freighter will transition its testing program to Moses Lake, Wash., and Palmdale, Calif., where the other two test airplanes will join it in the coming month.

"This truly is a great day for The Boeing Company and the 747 program," said Mo Yahyavi, 747 program general manager and vice president, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "It's the culmination of the hard work and dedication of our employees, suppliers and customers. While there is still much to do, I am excited to begin the flight-test program, which will demonstrate the capabilities of this airplane."

The 747-8 Freighter is the new, high-capacity 747 that will give cargo operators the lowest operating costs and best economics of any freighter. The airplane is 250 feet, 2 inches (76.3 m) long, which is 18 feet, 4 inches (5.6 m) longer than the 747-400 Freighter. The stretch provides customers with 16 percent more revenue cargo volume compared with its predecessor. That translates to an additional four main-deck pallets and three lower-hold pallets.

"The 747-8 Freighter continues the leadership of the 747 Freighter families, which carries more than half of the world's air freight, making it the standard of the air cargo industry," Yahyavi said.

Boeing launched the airplane on Nov. 14, 2005, with firm orders for 18 747-8 Freighters: 10 from Cargolux of Luxembourg and eight from Nippon Cargo Airlines of Japan. All told, Boeing has secured 108 orders for the 747-8, of which 76 are orders for the new freighter. Cargolux, Nippon Cargo Airlines, AirBridgeCargo Airlines, Atlas Air, Cathay Pacific, Dubai Aerospace Enterprise, Emirates SkyCargo, Guggenheim and Korean Air all have ordered the 747-8 Freighter.
