VoltAero, the French decarbonized aircraft maker based near Rochefort (Charente-Maritime), has been placed under bankruptcy protection by the La Rochelle commercial court. The move comes amid financial difficulties linked to a prospective private investor, the ACI group (which is also under bankruptcy protection), and a planned Malaysian partner, SEDC Energy. The company had just inaugurated its Cassio 330 hybrid aircraft assembly site in November 2024, aiming to produce a 12-passenger, hybrid-powered plane within about 1,200 kilometers. VoltAero has benefited from roughly €4.5 million in public funding to build its factory, but private investment has lagged. Founder and CEO Jean Botti laments what he calls a lack of appetite for industry in France and suggests seeking funding abroad, in the United States or Asia. The bankruptcy protection is intended to safeguard the company and its 35 employees. VoltAero has about a month to outline a plan and secure bridging funds, with a six-month horizon to emerge from protection, and remains committed to attempting to fly its prototype next year.
