Patents - Variable-Geometry Airbuses

jueves, 7 de marzo de 2013

Airbus has been granted US patents for two configurations that tackle one of the fundamental limitations of most aircraft designs – the wing is fixed to the fuselage. Other than variable-geometry, or swing-wing, designs where the objective is to combine the lower high-speed drag of a swept wing with the higher low-speed lift of an unswept wing, there might not seem much advantage to a moveable wing. Not so, it seems.

In  the first configuration (US patent 8,360,357 B2, filed in 2010), the wing is movable longitudinally along the aircraft
In the second configuration (US patent 8,336,811 B2, filed in 2010), the wing, tail and engines are combined into something Airbus calls the "aero-propulsive unit", which is mounted above the fuselage and attached via a system of rods.

With a Bump or a Puff, a Smoother Helo

Airplane wings have it easy. Most of the time they fly in one direction only - forwards - and both sides fly in the same direction. Not so for helicopter rotors, which work in the same way as wings but with one side moving forwards (the advancing blade) while the other moves backwards (retreating blade). As speed increases, the advancing blade has to worry about its tip going supersonic while the retreating blade has to worry about stalling along most of its length.

German Aerospace Center DLR is experimenting with techniques to soften the stall and reduce the vibration loads on the rotor. One involves blowing air through small holes in the blade leading edge. The other, inspired by the nobbly fins of a humpback whale, uses tiny bumps on the leading edge.

Spain, Bolivia clash over Bolivian airport nationalization

panish infrastructure company Abertis has rejected Bolivian government claims that it failed to fulfill investment commitments in the country's airports.

Bolivian President Evo Morales on Feb. 18 cited claims to justify his nationalization of domestic airport operator SABSA, which operates Bolivia's three principal airports: La Paz, Santa Cruz, and Cochabamba.

SABSA was 90% owned by Abertis and 10% by Spain's airport and air navigation services provider, AENA.  It is the latest in a series of expropriations of Spanish-owned companies in Bolivia, which has angered the Spanish government.

Winglets - All Shapes, Sizes - and Uses

Winglets all work in the same basic way, but they don't all look the same. In essence, winglets reduce drag by recovering some of the energy in the wingtip vortex. This provides an effective increase in wing aspect-ratio (span² divided by area - a measure of slenderness), and therefore a reduction in lift-induced drag, for a smaller increase in span, weight and profile drag compared with simply making the wing longer

Once rare, winglets have become commonplace, and over the years their design has evolved to make them more efficient and maximize the fuel savings they provide. Here are some examples of how winglets have changed - and how they could change in the future.

Improved ion engines will open up the outer Solar System

Improved ion engines will open up the outer Solar System:

An ion engine test for Deep Space One (Photo: NASA/JPL)
The phrase "engage the ion drive" still has the ring of line from Star Wars, but these engines have been used in space missions for more than four decades and remain the subject of ongoing research. Ion engines have incredible fuel efficiency, but their low thrust requires very long operating times ... and therein lies the rub. To date, erosion within such an engine seriously limits its operational lifetime. Now a group of researchers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) has developed a new design that largely eliminates this erosion, opening the gates for higher thrust and more efficient drives for manned and unmanned missions to the reaches of the Solar System...
