Airbus Sharklets take a “bite” out of A320 fuel consumption on their first test flight

30 November 2011 Headline news

The best-selling A320 Family jetliner – which is a familiar sight at airports around the world – assumed an even sleeker look today as the first aircraft equipped with Airbus’ fuel-saving “Sharklets” performed its maiden flight.

Using the Airbus in-house A320 development aircraft, this nearly five-hour initial flight marked the start of a multi-month test campaign from the company’s Toulouse, France headquarters that will validate the Sharkets’ performance, confirm their aerodynamic behavior and gather data for certification.

The Sharklets are designed to reduce fuel consumption by up to 3.5 per cent, corresponding to an annual CO2 reduction of some 700 tonnes per aircraft, while also enhancing the payload/range and takeoff performance.

Sized at approximately 2.5 metres tall and produced primarily with lightweight carbon fibre composites, Sharklets replace the current A320 wingtip fences that are smaller and of a modified triangular shape.  The Sharklets are standard on A320neo (new engine option) Family jetliners, and offered as optional equipment on new-build baseline versions of the single-aisle aircraft.

To date, airlines and leasing companies have signed nearly 1,500 firm orders and commitments for Sharklet-equipped A320neo Family jetliners, while a growing number of customers also are selecting them for newly-ordered baseline versions in the A320 product line.

Sharklets derive their name from the resemblance to a shark’s fin, are part of Airbus’ ongoing continuous improvement programme for the A320 Family – which also includes other aerodynamic refinements, engine improvements, passenger cabin enhancements and extended service intervals for the airframe.

Sharklet-fitted Airbus A320 successfully completes first flight-test

Campaign to hunt down fuel-burn successfully underway
30 November 2011 Press Release

Airbus has completed the first flight of the ‘Sharklet’ wing-tip devices on the company’s A320 development aircraft (MSN 001). This milestone marks the start of the early flight-test campaign to capture data for fine-tuning the flight laws, as well as for certification and performance validation.

Sharklets are around 2.5 metres tall and will replace the aircraft’s current wingtip fence. Offered as an option on new-build aircraft, Sharklets have been specially designed for the Airbus A320 Family to reduce fuel burn by up to an additional 3.5 percent, corresponding to an annual CO2 reduction of around 700 tonnes per aircraft. This reduction is equivalent to the CO2 produced by around 200 cars annually. The wingtip devices will also enhance the aircraft’s performance.

“The hunt is underway for Airbus to take another bite out of airlines’ fuel bills and CO2 emissions,” says Airbus’ Chief Operating Officer Customers, John Leahy. “With this start of Sharklet flight-testing today, actions speak louder than words as we take another definitive step towards greener aviation.”

A standard fit on the A320neo Family, which on its first anniversary after launch has attracted almost 1,500 orders and commitments from 26 customers, the Sharklets will contribute together with the new engines to 15 percent in fuel savings.

Airbus forecasts the world’s single-aisle airliner fleet to double to more than 23,000 aircraft by 2030, with an average annual fleet growth of 3.4 percent. This expansion will require around 19,200 new single-aisle aircraft deliveries for replacement and growth. Thanks to Airbus’ continuous product improvement investments of around 250 million euros annually in its single-aisle aircraft portfolio alone, the A320 Family is well positioned to capture a leading portion of this market.

Airbus is the world’s leading aircraft manufacturer offering the most modern and efficient passenger aircraft families from 100 to over 500 seats. Headquartered in Toulouse, France, Airbus is an EADS company.

Switzerland Buys Gripen NG Over Rafale, Typhoon

Switzerland has opted to acquire 22 Saab JAS-39E/F Gripen NGs in its long-running F-5 Tiger replacement program, says Swiss defense minister Ueli Maurer.

Gripen beat out the Dassault Rafale and Eurofighter Typhoon -- Boeing withdrew the F/A-18E/F early from the competition.

The arrangement is a big setback for Dassault, which was hoping to finally secure its first export deal for Rafale. Eurofighter also was hoping to convince Switzerland to join the family, since Italy, Austria and Germany already fly the aircraft.

Increased Test Productivity Lifts Off With First Flight of Second Northrop Grumman-Built X-47B Unmanned Aircraft (w/photo)

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif., Nov. 28, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) and the U.S. Navy will be able to increase the pace and productivity of the X-47B flight test program following the successful first flight Nov. 22 of the second air vehicle developed for the Navy's Unmanned Combat Air System Carrier Demonstration (UCAS-D) program.

The tailless, autonomous aircraft known as Air Vehicle 2 (AV-2) took off under hazy skies from Edwards Air Force Base at 12:43 p.m. PST, climbed rapidly to an altitude of 5,000 feet, flew several racetrack patterns over Rogers Dry Lake, then landed safely at 1:12 p.m.

"The successful addition of AV-2 to the fleet of X-47B test aircraft provides a critical inflection point for the UCAS-D program," said Carl Johnson, vice president and UCAS-D program manager for Northrop Grumman's Aerospace Systems sector. "With two aircraft now available, we can increase the amount of aircraft performance data we gather, which will allow us to meet our required aircraft capability demonstration goals in a timely manner."

The availability of two test aircraft is particularly important, added Johnson, for helping the program maintain a satisfactory flight test rhythm as it begins transitioning X-47B aircraft to Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md., (Pax River) for shore-based carrier suitability testing. While one aircraft is being moved to Pax River – expected to occur by the end of 2011 – the other one will continue envelope expansion flight testing at Edwards.

The testing at Pax River is scheduled to begin in early 2012. It will include testing the X-47B's ability to conduct precision approaches to the carrier, and to perform arrested landings and "roll-out" catapult launches at land-based test facilities. The testing will also include flight testing precision navigation computers and new guidance, navigation and control software recently installed on both aircraft. The new suite of hardware and software will enable the X-47B to make precision landings on a moving carrier deck.

The X-47B is a computer-controlled unmanned aircraft system that takes off, flies a preprogrammed mission, and then returns to base – all in response to mouse clicks from a mission operator. The operator actively monitors the X-47B air vehicle's operation using simple situational awareness displays, but does not fly it via remote control, as some unmanned systems are operated.

The Navy awarded the UCAS-D prime contract to Northrop Grumman in August 2007. The contract calls for the development and flight testing of two strike-fighter-sized X-47B unmanned aircraft. In 2013, the program is scheduled to demonstrate the first carrier launches and recoveries by a tailless, unmanned, low-observable-relevant aircraft. Autonomous aerial refueling demonstrations are planned for 2014. For the latest X-47B news and information, please visit www.as.northropgrumman.com/products/nucasx47b/.

Northrop Grumman's UCAS-D joint industry team includes GKN Aerospace, Lockheed Martin, Pratt & Whitney, Eaton, General Electric, Hamilton Sundstrand, Dell, Honeywell, Goodrich, Moog, Wind River, Parker Aerospace and Rockwell Collins.

Northrop Grumman is a leading global security company providing innovative systems, products and solutions in aerospace, electronics, information systems, and technical services to government and commercial customers worldwide. Please visit www.northropgrumman.com for more information.

Eurocopter delivers the first of six EC145s ordered by the Republic of Kazakhstan

Marignane, November 25, 2011

Eurocopter delivered the first of six EC145s ordered to date by the Kazakh Ministries of Defense and Emergencies. A total of 45 of the helicopters are to be purchased, and will be assembled by the new joint venture Eurocopter Kazakhstan Engineering, in which Eurocopter and Kazakhstan Engineering have a 50/50 share.

This initial delivery comes on the heels of the industrial cooperation and distribution contract signed last June by Eurocopter CEO Lutz Bertling and President of Kazakhstan Engineering Bolat Smagulov, in the presence of the French and Kazakh prime ministers François Fillon and Karim Massimov, respectively.

The new joint venture, Eurocopter Kazakhstan Engineering, will be assembling and customizing EC145s at its facilities near the Astana International Airport in Kazakhstan. The company will also enable Eurocopter to provide its customers in Kazakhstan and Central Asia with better local services for helicopter maintenance as well as training for pilots and technicians. In addition, Eurocopter Kazakhstan Engineering will be pursuing sales activities throughout the region.

Eurocopter Kazakhstan Engineering is scheduled to deliver the initial six EC145s to the Kazakh Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Emergencies before the end of the year for search and rescue and medical evacuation missions. The remaining helicopters are to be delivered by the end of 2016.

“The delivery of this first EC145 is very symbolic, as it marks the beginning of operations as part of our cooperation with Kazakhstan Engineering,” said Olivier Michalon, Global Business & Services Vice President for Europe and Central Asia. “We are very proud to be part of the Eurocopter Kazakhstan Engineering joint venture, as it will enable us to deploy major industrial capacities in the Kazakh aviation industry and lay the groundwork for the development of a new, highly specialized sector in the country. We are also convinced that the new joint venture will place Eurocopter in an excellent position for future development locally, as we are poised to provide operators with helicopters that are particularly well suited for the oil & gas industry and parapublic missions, including emergency medical services, homeland security and patrol, military, corporate and VIP.”

The EC145 is a true standout in the twin-engine, medium-lift class. It offers multi-mission capabilities and is equipped with the latest innovations developed by Eurocopter in cockpit design, avionics and rotor systems. It is certified for flight at temperatures as low as -45°C,making it particularly well suited for the harsh weather conditions and frigid temperatures often encountered in Kazakhstan.

Marlog project: Eurocopter officially ends work on its ambitious program to optimize the Group’s logistics chain

Marignane, November 24, 2011

Eurocopter has inaugurated its new logistics platform at its industrial site in Marignane, marking the end to an innovative program to re-engineer the Group’s entire logistics chain and implement a flexible, high-performance tool. The investments made over the past two years to develop modern means will enable Eurocopter to reduce both logistics costs and delivery cycles, so that the company’s assembly lines, customers and industrial partners will all be receiving their parts much faster.

The program was launched two years ago with an ambitious goal: to reorganize the entire logistics chain based on two dedicated platforms. The incoming flows and industrial logistics have now been centralized at the plant in Marignane, while the outgoing flows and spare part deliveries have all been grouped together at a brand-new platform located close by at the Florides industrial park.

To ensure that its operators around the world could receive their spares in record time, Eurocopter worked together with its partners to build a new infrastructure, Eurocopter Global Logistic, in the Florides industrial park near the Marignane plant. The new logistics center, which opened its doors last June, boasts some impressive numbers: 53,500 square meters of floor space, an inventory of more than 1.5 million spare parts, and more than 300,000 parts shipped per year. The platform is now fully operational and houses all the Group’s logistics activities within a specially-designed unit offering 24/7 services.

In parallel, the industrial logistics chain was also reorganized, and the Marignane plant now manages all incoming flows and industrial logistics activities. Two automated warehouses have been set up that together have the capacity to store a total of 180,000 parts—a first in Europe.

“When we undertook this huge project to overhaul our logistics chain, our biggest challenge was to keep providing our customers with the same high levels of services—plus we couldn’t allow our work to have any impact on the production lines,” explained Joseph Saporito, Executive Vice President of the Global Supply Chain at the Eurocopter Group. “We completed the job right on schedule, and are already beginning to reap the benefits in terms of customer satisfaction and competitiveness. The key to our success was excellent teamwork—between the different sectors here at Eurocopter, and also with our long-time partner Daher.”

It should not be long before the bold decision taken two years ago in a difficult economic context pays off. The new infrastructures integrate the most modern flow management tools and processes available, and Eurocopter now has everything at its disposal to attain three major goals: to improve customer service, provide its industrial lines with new just-in-time delivery services, and create new production areas at the plant by centralizing activities to free up space.

Boeing Receives $20 Million Contract to Upgrade F-15C Trainers

Cutting-edge visual system will provide 360 degrees of immersive training
ST. LOUIS, Nov. 29, 2011 -- The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] received a $20 million contract in September from the U.S. Air Force to upgrade the visual systems in the F-15C Mission Training Centers. Twelve MTCs, located at Langley Air Force Base, Va., Royal Air Force Lakenheath, United Kingdom, and Kadena Air Base, Japan, will be upgraded with Boeing’s Constant Resolution Visual System (CRVS).
CRVS is the centerpiece of a complete training suite that provides 360 degrees of immersive training, with a significantly lower cost than previous visual systems. By using standard, off-the-shelf projectors, the system is able to take advantage of the rapidly improving technology emerging in the commercial marketplace.
“A key feature of the CRVS is the ability to train with the Joint Helmet Mounted Cueing System and night vision goggles, both of which will be used in the F-15C MTC,” said Mark McGraw, Boeing vice president for Training Systems & Services.
The Boeing CRVS reduces total system life cycle cost by minimizing the number of projectors by one-third to one-half the number of projectors used in competing systems. The system is compatible with a full array of fast jet and rotary wing cockpits.
"CRVS is unique because it is the only system to provide constant resolution throughout the field of view,” added McGraw. “It eliminates a key problem with other systems, where the visibility of targets varies depending on where the pilot looks. Our design provides increased performance, yet is simple in concept.”
Installation of the F-15C visual systems will begin in October 2012 and will be completed by January 2013, allowing training to start by the end of that month.

Info - EUROFIGHTER TYPHOON VISITS LIMA FOR FIRST TIME

Friday, 25. November 2011

The Eurofighter Typhoon will be flying across the skies of Langkawi for the first time as a UK Royal Air Force aircraft participates in one of the most important global defence and security shows, LIMA 2011, which takes place in Langkawi, Malaysia, from 6-10 December.

Just a few days after particpating at the Dubai Air Show and with aircraft still in Malaysia following Exercise BERSAMA LIMA, the Typhoon will excite the crowds with displays demonstrating its incredible agility and speed.

Four RAF Typhoon aircraft from 6 Squadron flew from their base in Scotland to the Royal Malaysian Air Force airbase in Butterworth, Malaysia to take part in Exercise BERSAMA LIMA marking the 40th Anniversary of the Five Powers Defence Arrangement (FPDA), and whilst in the region wanted to reflect the importance of the air force to air force relationship by attending this prestigious exhibition.

Eurofighter Typhoon is the world’s most advanced multi-role combat aircraft. It meets current and future fast combat air needs and provides best-in-class combat effectiveness and operational flexibility. The Typhoon is capable of being deployed in the full spectrum of air operations from air policing and peace support, through to high intensity conflict. Typhoon aircraft have recently been deployed on operations and have performed exceptionally well, demonstrating outstanding levels of availability and maintainability.

BAE Systems’ Typhoon Test Pilot, Nat Makepeace, spoke about flying during the show:

“I am delighted to be at LIMA 2011 flying the Eurofighter Typhoon. I am hoping to show the tremendous power and agility of this fantastic aircraft during the daily displays. It is a wonderful opportunity to be in Malaysia and I am very grateful to have the chance to fly the aircraft during this international air show”.

At the show, Eurofighter will display a selection of the capabilities of the Typhoon, including:

  • Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar. The large aircraft nose allows for an optimised array with the addition of an innovative re-positioner to broaden the field of regard to more than 200 degrees, some 50% wider than traditional fixed plate AESA radar systems.
  • The most advanced Helmet Mounted Symbology System (HMSS) which forms a key component of the Eurofighter Typhoon weapon system improving tactical performance for Eurofighter pilots by providing essential flight and weapon aiming information through line of sight imagery. Information imagery includes aircraft’s flight parameters, weapons status and aiming all projected on the HEA (Helmet Equipment Assembly) visor.
  • The Meteor missile, considered the “game changer” in terms of kill probablity thanks to its dynamic performances, speed and range.
  • Eurojet’s EJ200 engine, the most advanced military engine available on the market.
