Robotic bird helps uncover the mysteries of flight turbulence
RMIT and Bristol researchers built a robotic kestrel to study how birds handle flight turbulence. Findings show kestrels use wing/tail adjustments and flexible feathers to stay stable in gusty air. The robot enabled precise force measurements, revealing techniques that could help design sUAVs capable of flying in turbulent conditions. Researchers plan to adapt these insights for larger aircraft.
