In April 2005, "USN, DARPA See Blimps & HULAs Rising", looked at a range of projects on the drawing board, including the Walrus heavy-transport blimp (that's "heavy" as in "1-2 million pounds") which offered the potential for a faster and more versatile sealift substitute.
In this article DID explains the Walrus concept, details the contractors and contracts involved in this initial award (including a few updates), and lays out the program's structure… or at least, what used to be its structure. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) funded phase 1 contracts, but things seemed to end in 2006. Yet the imperatives driving the need for Walrus, or even for a much smaller version of it, remain. Is the Walrus dead? What about Paul? And could it, or a HULA like like it, rise again?

AAI Corporation said Tuesday that its Shadow Tactical Unmanned
Aircraft Systems (TUAS) have completed 100,000 missions. With 113
systems ordered and 87 delivered, Shadow systems are deployed with the
U.S. Army, Army National Guard, Army Special Forces and Marine Corps.
These systems have amassed more than 445,000 flight hours, the
majority of which have been in support of combat operations in Iraq
and Afghanistan.

accountability, and technological challenges to mitigate offensive
threats. Many of these same questions, which emerged during the
initial space race and Cold War, have taken on new emphasis in light
of growing multinational dependence upon satellites and the freedom to
access space. This article briefly reviews the history of US and
Soviet ASAT capabilities and testing during the Cold War, examines the
recent Chinese shoot-down of its failed Feng Yun-1C satellite and the
US shoot-down of the failed USA-193 satellite, and compares and
contrasts these two ASAT missions, highlighting the follow-on threats
to other nations' satellites. It also presents mitigating strategies
that may lessen the threat of future offensive countersatellite
operations, including enhanced situational awareness, improved
survivability/reduced vulnerability, and increased sustainability; it
then offers a brief look at countries capable of offensive
countersatellite operations.

Fighter Pilots Face A Dismal Future

November 2, 2009: The U.S. Air Force has a morale problem with its
combat pilots. The issue is lack of action for the pilots. That, plus
the increased use of unmanned aircraft, and the very real prospect
that the age of the manned combat aircraft may be coming to an end.
This is made worse with hundreds of  fighter pilots being assigned to
operating Predator and Reaper UAVs. This was not popular duty, even
though the pilots still draw flight pay. It is tedious work, although
the UAV operators often saw more combat action than they did when
piloting F-16s or F-15s.

And it's non-rigid, structural stability results from the three-lobe envelope design. The airship is also optionally piloted - flown manned for self-deployment and unmanned for persistent ISR missions.

Le hablé de Google Reader y de cómo sirve precisamente para eso. Y me contestó con el 'a mi no me metas en líos raros, yo no tengo tiempo de aprender a manejar cosas raras'. Después hablamos de Sandglass Patrol y de todas sus secciones: Web, Blog, Frikinauticos 2.0, Recortes de Prensa Aeronáuticos, La "Aero" Red Social/Profesional Aeronáutica. Y entonces volvimos al tema original de la conversación.Me decía que estaría bien tener algo así como Frikinauticos 2.0, pero con noticias aeronáuticas solamente. Respondí que para eso estaba ya Recortes de Prensa Aeronáuticos y Lecturas Recomendadas de Aergenium. "Ya, pero ahí ponéis las noticias que a vosotros os parecen llamativas, yo digo algo más general, algo que recoja todo, que no tenga que ponerme a aprender cosas, una web que poner como página de inicio en el trabajo, que al abrir el 'internet' por la mañana y antes de irme a casa vea una web con titulares, organizado por secciones..."

 

Mi primera idea fue crear otra página como Frikinauticos 2.0, pero no era eso lo que me pedían. Tan solo una página que poner como 'home' recopilando los titulares de muchas fuentes aeronáuticas. Y tal vez google. Así ha nacido

Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in Arlington, Va.,
are taking another step in developing an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)
able to stay aloft and on station for as long as five years to act as
an electronic sensor and military communications platform.

This project, called Vulture II, will compete three contractor teams
-- led by Aurora Flight Sciences Corp. of Manassas, Va.; the Boeing
Co. Integrated Defense Systems advanced systems segment in St. Louis;
and the Lockheed Martin Skunk Works in Palmdale, Calif. -- for the
right to build a small-scale flight demonstration version of the
Vulture high-altitude UAV that must remain aloft and on station for
three months.
