The Anatomy of the Airbus A380 QF32 near disaster

The Airbus presentation to accident investigators of the damage done to QF32 on November 4 gives new technical insights into this near disaster involving a Qantas A380 with 466 persons on board.

The examination of the damage is far from complete, as the presentation makes clear. It doesn’t deal with the other dimensions of this serious incident, which are the loss or impairment of various systems on the giant airliner, and the emerging difficulties the crew faced from fuel load imbalance caused by some of those failures.

Airbus reveals A320 NEO plans

John Leahy, the EADS-owned airframer's chief salesman, unveiled an artist's impression of the re-engined narrowbody during a presentation at an EADS investor forum in Toulouse. A slide exhibiting the aircraft outlines targeted efficiency gains over the current A320. The NEO would have a fuel burn around 15% lower than variants now in production. The bypass ratio would increase from five in the present generation of engines to between nine and 12. Fan diameter rises from around 1,600mm (64in) to 2,025mm (81in).

Major F-35B Component Cracks In Fatigue Test

The aft bulkhead of the F-35B BH-1 fatigue-test specimen has developed cracks after 1,500 hours of durability testing, Ares has learned. This is less than one-tenth of the planned fatigue test program, which is designed to prove an 8,000-hour airframe life with a safety factor of two.

The bulkhead design was modified in the course of the jet's weight-saving redesign in 2004-05, switching from forged titanium - proven on the F-22 - to a new aluminum forging process developed by Alcoa.

Boeing Begins Certification Testing on 737 Performance Improvements [video]

SEATTLE, Nov. 16, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- A Boeing (NYSE: BA) Next-Generation 737-800 in the new United Airlines livery successfully completed its first test flight late last week, signifying the start of certification for a package of 737 performance improvements. Testing and certification will continue through April 2011. Aerodynamic and engine changes included in the package will reduce fuel consumption by 2 percent. Boeing is phasing the changes into production mid-2011 through early 2012.

One percent of the savings comes from reducing resistance as air flows around the airplane. The upper and lower anti-collision lights change from round to a more aerodynamic, elongated teardrop shape. Wheel-well fairings are re-contoured to smooth the air flow near the main landing gear. A redesign of the environmental control system, exhaust vent and streamlined wing slat and spoiler trailing edges round out the aerodynamic changes.

CFM is introducing the new CFM56-7BE engine enhancement program to coincide with Boeing's airframe changes. Low- and high-pressure turbine modifications will result in a 1 percent reduction in fuel consumption. In addition, Boeing is optimizing the engine's primary nozzle and plug. Together, the changes result in cooler-running engines that may provide up to 4 percent lower maintenance costs.

Boeing's continuous efforts to improve the Next-Generation 737 family have resulted in an accumulated 5 percent gain in fuel efficiency since the first airplane was delivered in 1998. The new improvements will give operators an airplane that is 7 percent more efficient than the first Next-Generation 737s delivered.

In late October, Boeing delivered its first two Next-Generation 737-800s with the new Boeing Sky Interior. The interior features new cove lighting and curving architecture that create a more open feel in the cabin. Updated sidewalls and window reveals add a modern feel, and larger stowage bins enable passengers to store more luggage while giving them more headroom. Deliveries to new operators continue each month.

As he stepped onboard the Next-Generation 737 that is fitted with numerous aerodynamic improvements to reduce fuel burn, Boeing engineer David Mathews remembered all the work that went into just one of the design changes.

"There were times we didn't think it was going to happen," he said.
Mathews and his colleagues spent years working with a supplier to come up with a new, more aerodynamic anti-collision light. The light, mounted on the top and bottom of the fuselage, had to meet strict federal regulations for light intensity.

"It's more than just two wires and a light bulb," said Mathews. "We tested numerous iterations. If the aerodynamic improvements weren't there, we would start all over again."
There was also the added challenge of coming up with a new design without changing the forces on the proven 737 fuselage or drastically altering the established production process at the Boeing factory in Renton, Wash.

"All those kinds of things have to be considered," Mathews said.
While Mathews worked on the anti-collision light, other teams of Boeing engineers went through the same painstaking process to further improve other portions of the Next-Generation 737 airframe.

The result is a package of performance improvements that includes:

  • Wheel well fairings re-contoured to smooth the air flow near the main landing gear
  • Environmental control system exhaust vent re-designed
  • Slat and spoiler trailing edges streamlined

These modifications - which reduce resistance as air flows around the airplane - are projected to add up to a 1 percent reduction in fuel burn.

At the same time, CFM is introducing the new CFM56-7BE, an enhanced version of its already fuel-efficient engine. Boeing predicts all of the changes combined will translate into a 2 percent fuel burn reduction. That would mean saving an average of $120,000 per airplane, per year, based on current fuel prices. Airlines will not have to pay extra for the improvements, which will also reduce the airplane's carbon footprint.

"A small change here, a small change there, it all adds up," said Mathews. He and his team finally decided on a tear-shaped design that is smaller and more streamlined, while still projecting the same light intensity.

Now, the Boeing Test & Evaluation team takes over to put all of the changes to the test.

"We have to validate to the customers that we are going to get the performance improvements that we predicted through all the design analysis," said Erin Henderson, a ground operations engineer. "The other thing we have to do is certify all of these improvements to the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) to prove they're safe for flight and they're safe to sell for our customers."

Recently, the team conducted its first test flight on the Next-Generation 737, which is painted in the new United Airlines livery. There will be many more tests in the months to come before the modifications are phased into the Next-Generation 737 production line in mid-2011.
For David Mathews, who got the chance to fly onboard the first flight, all the hard work has been well worth it.

"When you come up with a fine piece of equipment and it goes on the airplane, it's very rewarding."

Boeing Delivers UK Royal Air Force's 7th C-17 Globemaster III

LONG BEACH, Calif., Nov. 16, 2010 -- The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] delivered the United Kingdom's seventh C-17 Globemaster III to the Royal Air Force (RAF) today during a ceremony at Boeing's final assembly facility in Long Beach.

"The addition of a seventh C-17 to our fleet is a significant milestone that strengthens our support of operations worldwide, especially in Afghanistan," said Peter Luff, UK Minister for Defence Equipment, Support and Technology. "And next year, in May, we'll mark the 10th anniversary of the delivery of the RAF's first C-17, which continues to perform superbly -- anytime and anywhere."

The United Kingdom's fleet of C-17s has logged more than 60,000 flight hours, and this year supported humanitarian and disaster-relief missions to Pakistan, Haiti and Chile. Assigned to 99 Squadron at RAF Brize Norton near Oxford, C-17s provide critical airlift capability for the nation's Joint Rapid Reaction Force. Brize Norton is the RAF's main operating base for strategic air transport and air-to-air refueling.

RAF Air Marshal Kevin Leeson, UK Chief of Materiel (Air) in Defence Equipment and Support, thanked C-17 employees and suppliers for delivering an airlifter that provides "exceptional performance, versatility and reliability."

The C-17 is the world's only tactical airlift aircraft with strategic capabilities that allow it to fly between continents and land on short, austere runways.

"The C-17 provides rapid-response capability for relief missions where no other strategic airlifter can land," said Rick Heerdt, Boeing vice president and C-17 program manager. "We are proud to be your partner on every one of those missions."

Boeing supports the RAF's C-17s through the C-17 Globemaster III Sustainment Partnership, a Performance-Based Logistics program. The arrangement provides the RAF with the benefits of complete "virtual fleet" access and an extensive support network. The virtual fleet concept enables C-17 customers, especially those with smaller numbers of aircraft, to benefit from worldwide parts availability and economies of scale when purchasing materials.

Boeing has delivered 224 C-17s worldwide, including 20 with international customers. The U.S. Air Force -- including active National Guard and Reserve units -- has taken delivery of 204. Other customers include the Canadian Forces, the Royal Australian Air Force, the United Arab Emirates Air Force and Air Defence, the Qatar Emiri Air Force, and the 12-member Strategic Airlift Capability initiative of NATO and Partnership for Peace nations. U.S. President Barack Obama announced this month that India and the United States have reached a preliminary agreement for the Indian Air Force to acquire 10 C-17s.

Nanostructured materials to put an end to icy airplanes and roads

“We see this approach as a radical and much needed shift in anti-ice technologies,” said team leader Prof. Joanna Aizenberg. “The concept of friction-free surfaces that deflect supercooled water droplets before ice nucleation can even occur is more than just a theory or a proof-of-principle experiments. We have begun to test this promising technology in real-world settings to provide a comprehensive framework for optimizing these robust ice-free surfaces for a wide range of applications, each of which may have a specific set of performance requirements.”

Sukhoi conducts flight tests of Su-34 fighter bombers

Moscow, November 12. Sukhoi Company conducts flight tests of serial Su-34 fighter bombers at the Chkalov Aviation Production Association (NAPO) flight testing station in Novosibirsk. Serial production of the Su-34 has been set up at the NAPO plant, which is a part of the Sukhoi holding company. The Russian Air Force already has in service several Su-34s. Another consignment of such planes is due by the end of the year.

In 2008 a state contract was signed with the government to supply the Russian Defense Ministry with Su-34 serial-production aircraft.

The Su-34 can effectively attack land-based, sea- and airborne targets by day and night in all weathers using the entire suite of its airborne munitions, including high-precision types. In terms of operational capabilities this is a 4+ aircraft. Its active safety system, along with the newest computers, provides extra capabilities for the pilot and navigator to perform aimed bombing and to maneuver under enemy fire. The excellent aerodynamics, large capacity internal fuel tanks, fuel-efficient bypass engines with a digital control system, in-flight refueling device and add-on fuel tanks enable the aircraft to fly long distances close to those of medium strategic bombers.

The aircraft features an outstanding flight performance, maintainability and maneuverability. It has long-range aiming systems and modern onboard devices for communications and information exchange with on-land control posts, ground troops, surface ships and in-flight aircraft. It is fitted with a smart anti-radar defense system. The Su-34 has a sophisticated survival system, including an armored cockpit. The aircraft can perform missions at a low altitude in by-pass and fly-by modes.

Last July Su-34s proved their high combat capabilities and flight performance at the Vostok-2010 military exercises. The aircraft successfully hit mock targets in the Russian Far East after flying non-stop all the way from a base in the European part of Russia. The mission involved a mid-air refueling operation.

Su-34's combat potential will be enhanced soon by new airborne munitions.

FAA Finalizes Fatigue Damage Rule

FAA has issued a final rule on widespread fatigue damage requiring that design approval holders set a time- or cycle-based limit after which structural damage inspections must take place for aircraft as they age. The agency believes that the rule will prevent accidents, extend the economic life of the operational fleet, and help to eliminate the need for emergency airworthiness directives. It notes that this final rule specifically addresses widespread fatigue damage and as such serves as the last element of the aging aircraft program already in place.

UK defence chiefs stand by Harrier retirement decision

An open letter was published in The Times on 12 November, signed by
officials including new chief of the defence staff Gen Sir David
Richards and chief of the air staff Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen
Dalton. Their response was aimed specifically at concerns over a
decision to immediately retire the Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Ark
Royal and to remove the UK's remaining BAE Systems Harrier GR9s from
use by 31 March 2011.

"The decision to withdraw Harrier from service and to retain a reduced
[Panavia] Tornado force had to balance our current needs in
Afghanistan with the intent to rationalise our fast jet fleets," the
chiefs say. "After very careful consideration our military advice was
to retain the more capable Tornado. Harrier's contribution has been
huge, but the decision to withdraw it is the right thing to do in the
circumstances and a decision that we collectively agreed."

Airbus A350 XWB retrasado

http://fly-news.es/industria/airbus-a350-xwb-retrasado/

Ad-hoc-Release: EADS Reports Nine-Month Results for 2010

12 noviembre 2010

• Significant order intake of € 57.7 billion driven by Airbus
• Long Range production rate increases to 9 aircraft per month in
Q1 2012
• Revenues of € 31.6 billion
• EBIT* before one-off at € 0.8 billion
• Net income: € 198 million
• Net Cash at € 10.3 billion: better than expected, a key asset
• Increase of Free Cash Flow guidance

EADS’ (stock exchange symbol: EAD) macro-economic and commercial environment continues to improve thanks to increasing aircraft demand. Institutional markets including helicopters, defence and public budgets have to be monitored. At the end of September, the order intake(4) of € 57.7 billion mirrors the improved momentum in commercial aviation. EADS’ order book of more than € 426 billion provides a solid platform for future deliveries. EADS’ revenues amount to € 31.6 billion. The EBIT* before one-off of € 0.8 billion benefited from the underlying performance in Airbus legacy programmes and other core business activities. EBIT* amounted to € 784 million. The Net Cash position of € 10.3 billion is better than expected thanks to better cash performance and favourable phasing. It is a key asset to foster future growth.

“The commercial aviation sector continues its ascent which starts to be reflected in the nine-month results. Within this improving environment, the A380 production is visibly progressing and manufacturing of the A350 has begun. I want to express our gratitude to the A400M Customer Nations who have supported us in reaching an agreement”, said Louis Gallois, CEO of EADS. “At the same time, budget reviews in our home countries are not yet fully completed; we therefore remain attentive to challenges which could arise for our business with government customers. Looking forward, beyond 2011 the upturn in the commercial aircraft business should drive the profitability improvement of the Group. In the mid-term, at the current exchange rates, Airbus should significantly improve its underlying profitability thanks to better volume, pricing and further economic improvement of the A380 performance.”

In the first nine months, EADS’ revenues increased to € 31.6 billion (9m 2009: € 29.7 billion) thanks to growth from both volume and mix effects across core businesses. Physical deliveries remained at a high level with 380 aircraft at Airbus Commercial, 367 helicopters at Eurocopter and the 38th consecutive successful Ariane 5 launch. The percentage-of-completion methodology was resumed on the A400M programme. Until the end of September, based on the allocation of internal milestones, around € 500 million in revenues were booked on the programme. The Customer Nations and EADS have concluded negotiations on the overall A400M discussions. The FY 2009 A400M provision calculation remains valid. Government payments are more back-loaded than expected after the signature of the principle agreement in March 2010. Negotiations on the export levy facility (ELF) scheme are expected to be finalised before the end of the year. Once parliamentary approvals are obtained, the agreement will be binding. In the meantime, the A400M flight test programme is progressing better than expected with the fourth aircraft due to join the flight test campaign before year-end.

EBIT* before one-off (adjusted EBIT*) – an indicator capturing the underlying business margin by excluding non-recurring charges or profits caused by movements in provisions or foreign exchange impacts – stood at € 0.8 billion (9m 2009: € 1.7 billion) for EADS and around € 0.3 billion for Airbus. It benefited from good underlying performance of Airbus legacy programmes and core business activities in the other Divisions. As expected, A380 continues to weigh significantly on the underlying performance. Compared to the first nine months of 2009, EBIT* before one-off was mainly weighed down by the deterioration of hedge rates and higher investment in Research & Development.

EADS’ reported EBIT* stood at € 784 million (9m 2009: € 1,089 million).

Net Income amounted to € 198 million (9m 2009: € 291 million), or earnings per share of € 0.24 (earnings per share 9m 2009: € 0.36). The finance result amounts to € -452 million (9m 2009: € -615 million). The interest result of € -176 million (9m 2009: € -89 million) reflects the decline in interest rates on the financial markets. The other financial result amounts to € -276 million (9m 2009: € -526 million). The improvement year-on-year is due to a positive revaluation of the Group’s U.S. dollar and GBP cash assets and the revaluation of financial instruments.

Self-financed Research & Development (R&D) expenses reached € 2,038 million (9m 2009: € 1,834 million), driven by increases at Airbus due to a ramp-up in A350 XWB activity as well as increasing product investment at Cassidian for the Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and Systems businesses and at Eurocopter across the product range. Going forward R&D expenses should increase at Airbus, Eurocopter and Cassidian.

Free Cash Flow before customer financing of € 882 million (9m 2009: € -892 million) has benefited from good commercial order intake, a high volume of commercial deliveries including 14 A380 as well as favourable phasing. Receipts from governments for development programmes roughly compensate payment delays. At Airbus, inventories remained stable in the first nine months of 2010. The nine-month results of 2009 included a ramp-up on the A380 but a low level of A380 deliveries as well as a mismatch between production and delivery rates for both single aisle and long range aircraft. The inflow of advances linked to Airbus commercial activity was higher than one year ago, reflecting the increase in deliveries and commercial aircraft orders. This positive effect was more than offset by the lower inflows from Astrium and Cassidian. In the first nine months, the net customer financing outflow was lower than expected at around € -90 million due to a combination of appetite from lessors and banking market recovery. The third quarter included the sell down of three A320 operating leases. Free Cash Flow after customer financing amounted to € 791 million (9m 2009: € -1,182 million).

EADS’ Net Cash position amounted to € 10.3 billion (year-end 2009: € 9.8 billion) after a € 300 million contribution to pension fund assets. It continues to provide a solid foundation for the Group’s operational needs as well as future growth.

The order intake of EADS significantly increased to € 57.7 billion compared to one year ago (9m 2009: € 24.6 billion) mainly due to higher commercial aircraft orders. By the end of September 2010, EADS’ order book stood at a robust € 426.4 billion (year-end 2009: € 389.1 billion), mainly reflecting increases at Airbus and Astrium. The Airbus Commercial order book benefited from a positive revaluation impact of around € 18 billion due to the closing spot rate of the U.S. dollar that has significantly strengthened since year-end. The defence order book stood at € 56.4 billion (year-end 2009: € 57.3 billion).

At the end of September 2010, EADS’ workforce consisted of 120,580 employees (year-end 2009: 119,506).

Outlook

In 2010, Airbus gross orders should be up to 500 thanks to the commercial aircraft upturn and Airbus deliveries should be slightly more than 500.

EADS’ guidance is based on an assumption of €1 = $1.35 for the Q4 2010 average rate and year-end closing spot rate.

EADS revenues should be more than € 44 billion.

At slightly more than 500 deliveries, EADS confirms its EBIT* before one-off guidance at around € 1.2 billion.

Going forward the EBIT* performance of EADS will be dependent on the Group’s ability to execute on the A400M, A380 and A350XWB programmes, in line with the commitments made to its customers.

Using the above exchange rate assumptions, EADS increases its EBIT* guidance to at least € 1.1 billion.

EADS is also increasing its Free Cash Flow guidance. Provided a sustainable year-end cash inflow of institutional and government business, the Free Cash Flow before customer financing should be around € 1 billion and Free Cash Flow after customer financing should be above € 800 million compared to the previously expected free cash outflow of around € -600 million.

* EADS uses EBIT pre goodwill impairment and exceptionals as a key indicator of its economic performance. The term “exceptionals” refers to such items as depreciation expenses of fair value adjustments relating to the EADS merger, the Airbus Combination and the formation of MBDA, as well as impairment charges thereon.

EADS is a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services. In 2009, the Group – comprising Airbus, Astrium, Cassidian and Eurocopter – generated revenues of € 42.8 billion and employed a workforce of more than 119,000.

Safran Group presents tomorrow's noiseless nacelles

Developed by Safran company Aircelle, the NAIAD program – Nacelle Innovative and Acoustic Demonstrator – will give aircraft engines lighter, quieter nacelles. We asked Anne-Sophie Goubet, NAIAD technical manager, to explain the program's objectives.

What exactly does NAIAD entail?
NAIAD is a demonstrator program that will enable us to develop the technologies needed for tomorrow's nacelles. Aircelle launched the program back in 2007 in conjunction with fellow Safran company Snecma, as part of joint studies to define an optimized propulsion system. The main aim of the program, 50% of which is funded by the French civil aviation directorate DGAC, is to reduce the propulsion system's weight and drag – two key factors in lowering fuel consumption and therefore CO2 and NOx emissions. It is also designed to improve the nacelle's acoustic performance, while reducing maintenance costs.

What are the most significant innovations in this program?
First, noise reduction, primarily due to the nacelle design: we optimized the joints, and also expanded the areas using acoustic linings. At the same time, this "single-piece" design, without any openings, reduced the nacelle's drag. And by using composite parts we achieved weight savings as well. Finally, instead of trap doors, engine access is provided by sliding the cowling forward, which also facilitates maintenance.

The NAIAD demonstrator was delivered to Snecma in September. What are the next steps in this program?
We just started assembling the two major parts of our nacelle, the laminar forward cowl (LFC) and one piece barrel (OPB), with Snecma's Mascot fan, which is also a demonstrator for tomorrow's technologies. We have been in constant touch with Snecma over the last few years, to ensure that the technologies and interfaces used in these two projects are compatible. In 2011, the Mascot demonstrator and the OPB will be transferred to GE's test facilities in Peebles, Ohio, where they will undergo acoustic tests. Soon after that they will be joined by another major NAIAD subassembly, the acoustically treated substitute thrust reverser, or SITA.

Boeing: official press release about 787 Z002 incident

EVERETT, Wash., Nov. 10, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- During approach to Laredo, Texas, yesterday, airplane ZA002 lost primary electrical power as a result of an onboard electrical fire. Backup systems, including the deployment of the Ram Air Turbine (RAT), functioned as expected and allowed the crew to complete a safe landing. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by Boeing.

The pilots executed a safe landing and at all times had positive control of the airplane and all of the information necessary to perform that safe landing.

Initial inspection appears to indicate that a power control panel in the aft electronics bay will need to be replaced on ZA002. We are inspecting the power panel and surrounding area near that panel to determine if other repairs will be necessary.

We have retrieved flight data from the airplane and are analyzing it in Seattle. This process will take several days. We are committed to finding the cause quickly but will not rush the technical team in its efforts.

The team was conducting monitoring of the Nitrogen Generation System at the time of the incident but there is no reason to suspect that the monitoring or earlier testing of that system had anything to do with the incident.

Consistent with our internal processes, until we better understand the cause of the incident on ZA002, we have decided to postpone flight test activities on other airplanes. Ground test activities will be conducted until flight test resumes.

Likewise, we cannot determine the impact of this event on the overall program schedule until we have worked our way through the data. Teams have been working through the night and will continue to work until analysis is complete and a path forward is determined.

http://www.aerotendencias.com/sociedad-aeronautica/2234-la-comision-europea-impone-una-multa-de-799-millones-a-11-companias-por-participar-en-un-cartel-para-fijar-los-precios
