En Andalucía solo conocemos a una organización que se dedique a esta formación: Caena, dentro de las instalaciones que la firma Faasa tiene en Palma del Río, y lo hace con la ayuda de la Junta de Andalucía, mira, una cosa bien hecha, hay que reconocerlo. Hay escasez de estos profesionales tanto en España como en Europa.

El Gobierno alemán quiere comprar hasta un 15% de EADS



En concreto, Berlín habría indicado al banco público KfW que iniciara conversaciones con el fabricante de automóviles Daimler y el consorcio bancario Dedalus con el objetivo de comprarles sus respectivas participaciones del 7,5% en EADS antes de final de año, según informa el diario 'Financial Times'.

Aunque no se ha fijado un precio, se cree que la operación rondará los 2.700 millones. En este sentido, como KfW y otras entidades públicas controlan alrededor de un 3% del accionariado de EADS a través de Dedalus, sólo sería necesario adquirir un 12% adicional.

TORONTO, Oct. 25, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] forecasts that air carriers in North America will take delivery of 7,290 new airplanes over the next 20 years at a market value of $820 billion. Taking retirements of airplanes into account, the North America fleet will grow from 6,650 airplanes today to about 8,830 airplanes by 2031.

"The North American commercial aviation market is about to record a third consecutive year of profit, with modest passenger traffic growth," said Randy Tinseth, vice president of Marketing, Boeing Commercial Airplanes, who released Boeing's 2012 North America market outlook today in Toronto. "The long-term outlook for the North American airline industry is approximately 3 percent annual traffic growth through the forecast period. The market is shaped by aggressive growth of low-cost carriers and the need to replace aging airplanes in the fleets of the established network carriers."

The network carriers are expected to maintain strict capacity discipline. Low-cost carriers will continue to outpace network carrier growth to accommodate increased demand and fill some markets abandoned by network carriers. Financial stability will also be a key indicator of future growth. Several airlines have indicated growth planning to be executed when returns are sufficient to fund their strategic goals.

Boeing forecasts single-aisle airplanes will grow to 69 percent of the total North America fleet by 2031. High fuel prices are intensifying the need for new fuel-efficient airplanes, prompting several airlines in the United States to accelerate their fleet renewal programs. Alaska, American, Delta, Southwest and United have announced plans to replace some of their older, less efficient airplanes with Next-Generation 737s or the new 737 MAX. Both the Next-Generation 737 and the 737 MAX offer significant advantages in improved capabilities, fuel efficiency and maintenance costs, as well as enhanced environmental performance.

Long-haul international traffic to and from North America is forecasted to grow at an annual rate of approximately 5 percent. The international growth is primarily driven by anticipated passenger traffic to Southwest Asia, China, the Middle East, Africa and South America. Passenger traffic between North America and those regions is forecasted grow at or above 6 percent per year. This growth in the long-haul segment is expected to result in demand for an additional 1,320 new fuel-efficient, twin-aisle airplanes such as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Large airplanes (747-size and larger) will not see significant demand in North America, with only about 40 airplanes, or 1 percent of the total investment.

¿Gasolina a partir del aire? Es posible y se está haciendo en el Reino Unido

La idea es recoger el dióxido de carbono del aire y obtener hidrógeno del vapor de agua. Combinando el hidrógeno con el carbono, y a través de un catalizador se crea metanol. Por último, con un biorreactor el metanol se convierte en gasolina.

Las ventajas del sistema, a parte de que usa aire y vapor de agua, es que la gasolina es una forma muy sencilla de almacenar energía y que ya existe una infraestructura por todo el mundo para su uso. El sistema además se puede hacer más grande fácilmente y colocarlo junto a una central eléctrica para tener producción local de gasolina sin depender de otros países.

Madrid, 25 de octubre de 2012.- Recientemente, GMV ha organizado la quinta edición de la conferencia “GMV Users Conference”, sobre sistemas de control de satélites, GUC´2012, que ha tenido lugar a primeros de octubre en el Chateau d'Esclimont, Rambouillet (Francia), y que ha contado con la asistencia de cerca de 50 representantes de 18 organizaciones diferentes, entre las que se encontraban agencias espaciales, operadores de satélites de comunicaciones y constructores de satélites.

Durante tres días, los participantes han tenido oportunidad de asistir a presentaciones tecnológicas, compartir sus experiencias operacionales y participar en debates y mesas redondas sobre temas actuales que afectan al sector.

En la conferencia se trataron temas de gran interés para los asistentes, que giraron en torno a la automatización de las operaciones, nuevas tecnologías aplicadas a los sistemas de control en tierra, seguridad en la red y nuevos retos en la provisión de soluciones dinámica de vuelo a medida.

Los participantes tuvieron también la oportunidad de recibir información y asistir a demostraciones de las diferentes líneas de productos para el control de los satélites, como el sistema multimisión-multisatélite para monitorización y control de satélites hifly®; la infraestructura de productos genéricos de dinámica de vuelo, focusSuite; la herramienta de reconfiguración de la carga de pago de satélites de telecomunicación, smart rings; la herramienta de análisis de misión, matool; la herramienta de optimización de la capacidad del satélite, smarthz; la herramienta de monitorizado y control de estaciones de seguimiento, magnet; así como nuestras soluciones de seguridad en la red. Igualmente se presentaron y debatieron con los asistentes a la conferencia, las nuevas funcionalidades de estos productos y los futuros desarrollos de los mismos.

Al finalizar la conferencia, los asistentes tuvieron la oportunidad de expresar su entusiasmo por este tipo de iniciativas lideradas por GMV, como una oportunidad única no sólo para recibir información sobre los desarrollos tecnológicos y las tendencia futuras, sino que además constituye el marco inmejorable en el que debatir y compartir experiencias operacionales entre los diferentes actores involucrados en el sector espacial. Cassidian is developing a new Engineering Support System (ESS) for German Air Force Eurofighter. The Cassidian ESS acts as an interface for the exchange of maintenance data with the aircraft, the analysis of aircraft and engine data, structural loads, and the interpretation of error messages from the Eurofighter avionic systems.

A successor to the present ESS – which is used by the four Eurofighter core nations – is needed in order to provide optimum support for future equipment upgrades to the Eurofighter as of software version SRP12 (P1E). In addition, the new system is fully connected to the Bundeswehr’s logistics information system (SASPF – standard application software product families). The Cassidian ESS will also improve the operational capability of the German Eurofighter fleet, for instance significantly shortening the inspection times between consecutive missions.

The ESS has a modular design and contains a standard interface for linking it to various logistics systems. This not only enables it to support other weapon systems, but also to be tailored to the specific requirements of other nations. Cassidian was awarded the development contract by the German Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) in early October. The new system is being developed at the Military Air Systems Centre in Manching in cooperation with the German Air Force, and will be delivered to the customer in 2014.

Boeing Starts Building First 777 at Increased Rate

8.3 per month rate is highest ever for a Boeing twin-aisle airplane


EVERETT, Wash., Oct. 23, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) today began building the first 777 at the highest rate ever for a Boeing twin-aisle airplane. The rate of 8.3 airplanes per month is a nearly 20 percent increase over the previous seven per month rate.

The first part, the lower lobe of the aft fuselage, of the first 777 to be built at the new rate was loaded into position in the factory earlier today.

"The preparation the team has done for this historic rate increase has been comprehensive from floor to ceiling," said Scott Fancher, 777 vice president and general manager. "We've hired and trained hundreds of additional employees and the efforts of the team to get us to this point have been simply outstanding," he said.

New technologies have been implemented to achieve the highest production rate the Everett plant has seen. Flex-track drilling machines in the 777 body and wings area along with automated spray-painting equipment have enabled employees to increase productivity and improve quality and safety.

"This rate increase reflects the strong demand for the 777. It continues to be the clear leader in the 300-400 passenger seat market," Fancher said.

The airplane, a 777 Freighter, will be delivered to Korean Air in February 2013.

1,049 777s are currently in service. 1,380 have been ordered from 63 customers around the globe.

Boeing-COMAC Technology Center Announces First Biofuel Research Project

  • Hangzhou Energy Engineering & Technology will find ways to convert waste cooking oil for use as jet fuel

BEIJING, Oct. 23, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- A newly formed technology center created by Boeing (NYSE: BA) and Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China (COMAC) has announced that Hangzhou Energy Engineering & Technology, Co., Ltd., (HEET) will conduct the center's first research project.

HEET, a company with experience developing alternative energy technologies, will focus on ways to convert discarded cooking oil into a component of sustainable aviation biofuel at the Boeing-COMAC Aviation Energy Conservation and Emissions Reductions Technology Center.

The project aims to identify contaminants in waste cooking oil, which often is described in China as "gutter oil," and processes that may treat and clean it for use as jet fuel. The focus of the project for the first year will be to demonstrate the feasibility of achieving significant cost reduction in converting gutter oils and other waste oils into jet fuel through improvement of conversion efficiency and associated technology.

The Boeing-COMAC technology center is working with China-based universities and research institutions to expand knowledge in areas such as sustainable aviation biofuels and air traffic management that improve commercial aviation's efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.

Funded by both companies, the center opened in August at COMAC's new Beijing Aeronautical Science and Technology Research Institute (BASTRI).

"As one of the member organizations of COMAC, BASTRI was built for carrying out civil aviation industry research and we aim at expanding knowledge in sustainable aviation biofuels and carbon emissions reduction," said Qin Fuguang, president of BASTRI, COMAC. "China is the world's fastest growing aviation market and the biggest consumer of cooking oil. There's great potential for converting the waste cooking oil into sustainable aviation fuel. It's a good opportunity for Boeing, HEET and COMAC to work together and make efforts to protect the environment."

Waste cooking oil shows potential as a feedstock for sustainable aviation biofuel production and an alternative to petroleum-based fuel because China annually consumes approximately 29 million tons of cooking oil, while its aviation system uses 20 million tons of jet fuel. Finding more efficient ways to convert "gutter oil" into jet fuel could increase regional biofuel supplies and improve biofuel's affordability, enhancing the potential for commercial use.

The United States Air Force (USAF) has released the results of last August’s third test of the X-51a Waverider, which resulted in the crash of the unmanned scramjet demonstrator. At a press teleconference featuring the Program Manager for Air Force Research Laboratory, Charles Brink, it was confirmed that a malfunctioning fin was the cause of the crash. French Prime Minister inaugurates A350 XWB Final Assembly Line

French Prime Minister, Jean-Marc Ayrault and Airbus President and Chief Executive Officer, Fabrice Brégier this morning officially inaugurated the 74,000 square-metre A350 XWB Final Assembly Line (FAL), in Toulouse, France. At full production, the FAL will employ some 1,500 people who will build up to ten aircraft a month as from 2018.

The ceremony, held inside the FAL, was attended by French political representatives, regional officials representatives from other Airbus home governments, as well as Airbus customers, suppliers, top executives and over 1,000 employees.

“Innovation is deeply rooted in our DNA and this is fully demonstrated on the A350 XWB, the world’s newest, most advanced airliner. Today we honour Roger Béteille, an exceptional aviation pioneer and we name the A350 XWB Final Assembly Line after him, one of our industry’s greatest innovators,” said Fabrice Brégier, Airbus President & CEO.

“It is a great honour for me to have my name associated with this magnificent, state of the art A350 Final Assembly Line, “said Roger Béteille. “Airbus’ success is a concrete example of how European partners working hand in hand can achieve incredible things together and this has been an essential ingredient to becoming the world’s largest and premier aircraft manufacturer.”

Guests at the ceremony were able to see the A350 XWB coming to life, with the first two aircraft (the static aircraft and the first flyable aircraft, MSN1) at different stages of final assembly.

The static aircraft, which will be used solely for ground tests, has nearly completed assembly, with a full fuselage, two wings and the vertical tail plane joined. The aircraft will be transferred to the static test hangar at the Toulouse Jean-Luc Lagardère site to be prepared for static tests to start in spring 2013. The first flyable A350 XWB (MSN1) is also progressing well, with the fuselage already joined. The wing, vertical and horizontal tail plane for MSN1 are inside the FAL and will be joined to the fuselage in early November.

Béteille was one of Airbus’ four founding fathers. He was instrumental in the development of fly by wire flight controls, one of Airbus’ key innovations which has since become the industry standard. Béteille’s was also responsible for the introduction of the world’s first two engine wide-body aircraft, the A300 which performed its first flight 40 years ago. With the inauguration of this new FAL, Airbus celebrates the world’s newest generation two engine wide-body aircraft, the A350 XWB.

Astrium presents results of its study into automatic landing near the Moon’s south pole



  • Mission concept established for automatic lunar lander vehicle to land near the Moon’s south pole in 2019
  • Soft and precise landing is precursor to significant participation in future human lunar exploration
  • ESA ministerial conference to decide next development steps in November 2012



Astrium, Europe’s leading space technology company, has presented at the ESA Preliminary System Requirement Review the major results of its Lunar Lander Phase B1 study. Carried out on behalf of the European Space Agency ESA, the study has consolidated the mission concept for automatic landing near the Moon’s south pole in 2019 as well as the provisional design of the lunar lander vehicle.

As part of the study, Astrium also confirmed the schedule for the mission and calculated total mission costs at some 500 million euros, including validation of technologies, 300 to 350 million euros for the development, manufacturing and testing of the Moonlander, as well as launcher services and operations. The upcoming ESA ministerial conference in November 2012 will decide how to proceed with the development of a lunar lander. Following this Phase B1 study, which was commissioned in September 2010, the next step would be Phase B2, which completes the spacecraft design phase and culminate with the Preliminary Design Review.

This present study works out and tests the key technologies for an automatic, soft and precise landing. Including very advanced features allowing to detect and avoid possible surface hazards (boulders, craters, steep slopes) an automatic lunar landing as envisaged in the study involves a series of technological challenges. To land softly and precisely on the Moon calls for key technologies such as an autonomous navigation system, based on visual navigation, and a complex propulsion system. Most of these technologies have been tested during the study: for instance, propulsion system components were put through their paces on Astrium’s test benches in Lampoldshausen. Meanwhile, the TRON (Testbed for Robotical Optical Navigation) and LAMA (Landing and Mobility Test Facility) facilities at the DLR Institute of Space Systems in Bremen were employed to test the navigation system hardware and landing legs in a realistic simulated lunar landscape.

“As a demonstration of technology, the ATV mission proves the skills and experience which Astrium has in automated rendezvous and docking procedures. This study’s concept is based on ATV technology, and our unique expertise will enable us to develop the key technologies essential to landing an automated vehicle on the Moon,” said Dr. Michael Menking, Senior Vice President Orbital Systems and Exploration at Astrium. ATV is the biggest supply vehicle servicing the international space station, built by Astrium.

Relying exclusively on solar energy for operation on the Moon surface, the lander will place a small Moon rover and various stationary experiments on the lunar surface to conduct scientific research over a period of about six months (basic mission), with the results determined in situ being transmitted to Earth. These results will provide an initial understanding of the Moon’s polar region, as well as supplying basic information for future human exploration missions.

Singapore Airlines to order 5x A380s and 20x A350 XWBs

Singapore Airlines (SIA) has announced that it will order 25 more widebody aircraft from Airbus, comprising five double deck A380s and 20 A350-900s. The aircraft will be operated on the carrier’s long range and regional services, offering maximum comfort and efficiency for high density and medium capacity routes.

The latest A380 order will be the third to be placed by the airline, bringing the total number of A380s ordered by SIA to 24. The airline, which was the launch operator for the A380, now has 19 aircraft in service, flying to 10 destinations in Europe, the US and the Asia-Pacific region from its Singapore base. In the mid-size category, the new A350 XWB order will see the airline double its backlog for the all-new aircraft to 40. The A350-900s will be used by the airline on both medium and long haul routes.

“This major order will provide us with additional growth opportunities and is consistent with our longstanding policy of maintaining a young and modern fleet. Since first entering service with Singapore Airlines in 2007, the A380 has joined the fleets of nine world class carriers. The spacious, quiet cabin and smooth ride have made the A380 a firm favourite with passengers, resulting in higher load factors wherever it flies. To date, Airbus has recorded 257 firm orders for the A380 from 20 customers.

The A350 XWB (Xtra Wide-Body) is an all-new mid-size long range product line comprising three versions and seating between 270 and 350 passengers in typical three-class layouts. The new Family will bring a step change in efficiency compared with existing aircraft in this size category, using 25 per cent less fuel and providing an equivalent reduction in CO2 emissions. Scheduled for entry-into-service in 2014, the A350 XWB has already won 558 firm orders from 34 customers worldwide.

New AW119Kx Single Engine Helicopter Unveiled At AMTC

AgustaWestland, a Finmeccanica company, is pleased to announce the launch of the AW119Kx, the latest evolution of the proven and successful AW119 single engine helicopter, which features the Garmin G1000H glass integrated flight deck system and the very latest avionics, including synthetic vision, moving map, highway in the sky and obstacle/terrain avoidance systems, to improve situational awareness and increase safety. La temporada de Incendios se cierra en España, con un importante aumento del número de siniestros y superficie quemada, debido a la grave sequia y a la previsión de incendios que azotan España en la precampaña.

 

Madrid, 23 de octubre de 2012. La patronal que engloba a las compañías aéreas de extinción de incendios ha hecho balance de la campaña 2012, poniendo de manifiesto los resultados de una de las peores campañas de los últimos años y con un considerable aumento de su actividad aérea en todas las zonas geográficas de nuestro país.

 

Según datos oficiales del Ministerio de Agricultura, Alimentación y Medio Ambiente (MAGRAMA), 2012 será recordado como un año nefasto en cuanto a la lucha contraincendios. La escasez de lluvia, la falta de limpieza en los montes, las actuaciones negligentes y la mano del hombre unida a la menor eficacia de los planes de incendios de las CCAA debido a los ajustes, sobretodo en la precampaña, ha provocado que este verano haya sido uno de los peores. La campaña de este verano se ha convertido en el peor resultado de todos los registrados hasta ahora, por el importante incremento de superficie arrasada, con casi 200.000 Ha, un 1 % de la superficie forestal nacional. A esto sumamos que desde enero a junio de 2012 se calcinaron un total de 132.299 hectáreas, lo que supone el triple de superficie con respecto al mismo periodo del año anterior.

 

Según Dámaso Castejón, Secretario General de AECA & Helicópteros, que engloba a todas las compañías que operan en campaña, «entre los meses de enero a mayo, se ha dado un importante número de siniestros y por tanto un aumento en las horas de vuelo, por lo que es recomendable un aumento de número de unidades para aumentar la efectividad. En Marzo presentamos un informe sobre los presupuestos para la precampaña que constataban la reducción de hasta un 11 por ciento, lo que impide atajar con mayor firmeza la oleada de incendios  que tuvimos en la primera mitad del año». Este resultado sumado a la gran sequia que han tenido los montes españoles, ha supuesto un aumento del número de incendios, del 12 por ciento con respecto al año anterior.

 

Para este año 2012 se ha contado con un total de 238 medios aéreos, aportados por MAGRAMA y CC.AA. La mayoría de las CCAA y el Ministerio han mantenido el mismo esfuerzo inversor que años anteriores en la época de mayor riesgo y otras han realizado un ajuste que ha supuesto una atención más tardía a diversas zonas del país. Este ajuste ha sido muy considerable en precampaña y ha provocado un mayor trabajo de los escasos recursos con los que se contaban.

 

Hasta la fecha, y desde los inicios de la precampaña, las aeronaves han tenido un aumento considerable de su actividad llegando incluso a cifras sin precedentes, con más de 22.000 horas de vuelo realizadas. Los graves incendios de Valencia, Castilla y León, Canarias, Castilla y La Mancha, Andalucía y Cataluña acaparan más de 12.000 horas de vuelo.

 

Dada la singular orografía de montes y bosques del país, es necesario reforzar la flota de medios aéreos en cada región. Además, cabe destacar la labor de los helicópteros pesados tipo Kamov que este año han incrementado su actividad aérea en más de un 45 %. La actuación del medio aéreo es imprescindible y muy necesaria pues permite llegar con rapidez al incendio y transportar a las brigadas forestales. Pero la eficacia de este dispositivo radica en un reparto equidistante de los medios que permita cubrir las zonas en un espacio inferior a 30 minutos.

 

Además, hay que resaltar que la flota de helicópteros y aviones de España que operan en los incendios forestales es eficaz y moderna, y los profesionales son pilotos con una importante experiencia en este tipo de trabajos. En 2011, las compañías del sector  invirtieron más de 55 millones de euros en la adquisición de flota, mantenimiento y la formación, en un sector que emplea a más de 3.000 profesionales al año.

Eurocopter's Naval and Maritime Helicopters to be showcased at the 2012 Euronaval Exhibition


Eurocopter's extensive range of helicopters for naval and maritime missions will take pride of place at Euronaval 2012, the 23rd Naval, Defense and Maritime Exhibition and Conference, with the company displaying models of the NH90 NFH, the AS365 N3+ and the AS565 MB/Panther (Hall 2A - Stand G70).

Eurocopter's participation in this biennial event, to be held October 22-26 at Le Bourget Exhibition Centre near Paris, will underscore the decades of experience the company has acquired in naval and maritime helicopters. With a diversified product line tailored to numerous operational requirements, Eurocopter helicopters are counted on for such missions as antisubmarine and anti-surface warfare, anti-piracy and anti-smuggling missions as well as coastal or deep-sea maritime search and rescue operations.

Built by NHIndustries, a consortium formed by Eurocopter, AgustaWestland and Fokker, the NH90 is just one of the models on show. To date 122 NH90s have been delivered to customers, 18 of them the NFH naval version. The fleet has now clocked up a total of 30,000 flight hours, mainly in SAR missions performed in especially demanding environments and also in the Afghan theater of operations. Compatible with 80 types of NATO frigates, the naval version of the NH90 has fully demonstrated its capabilities in a wide range of missions, from reconnaissance, ship identification and tracking to rescue and transportation of passengers and troops.


"With more than 30,000 flight hours already behind it, the land and naval versions of the NH90 have shown their highly extensive operational capabilities in the most taxing conditions," said Dominique Maudet, Eurocopter Group Executive Officer for France. "We pay very close attention to the feedback we receive from the armed forces, which have been very positive," he added. "Italian forces have been particularly impressed by the NH90 TTH they have deployed in Afghanistan, while the NFH, which is set to receive its final qualification in the very near future, has already carried out a number of sea rescue missions, notably in France, in extreme flight conditions - saving many lives in the process."

Eurocopter will also be displaying models of its other naval and maritime helicopters, among them the AS565 MB Panther and the AS365 N3 Dauphin. A militarized version of Eurocopter's twin-engine Dauphin helicopter, the Panther is a multi-purpose, medium-weight aircraft designed for applications such as anti-submarine and anti-surface missions, SAR, surveillance and monitoring patrols in Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ), maritime counter-terrorism, casualty and medical evacuation, and troop and cargo transport. The N3+ version of the AS365 was recently fitted with a four-axis autopilot system; when used in SAR modes, this gives it the same mission capability as the civil version of the Panther.

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif., Oct 22, 2012 – An F-35A test aircraft, flown by U.S. Air Force Maj. Matthew Phillips, completed the first aerial weapons release of an AIM-120 AMRAAM (Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile) from a conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) aircraft, Oct. 19. The aircraft, known as AF-1, jettisoned the instrumented AIM-120 over the China Lake test range from an internal weapons bay. This was the second in-flight weapons release in three days for AF-1 as it completed the release of a 2,000 pound GBU-31 BLU-109 Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) Oct. 16. The F-35A 5th Generation fighter is designed to carry a payload of up to 18,000 pounds using 10 weapon stations. The F-35A features four internal weapon stations located in two weapon bays to maximum stealth capability. The CTOL aircraft can also utilize an additional three weapon stations per wing if required.

EMARSS: Intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft cleared to enter FAA certification program

FAIRFAX, Va., Oct. 22, 2012 -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] completed the first flight of the Enhanced Medium Altitude Reconnaissance and Surveillance System (EMARSS) Risk Reduction Prototype (ERRP) aircraft on Saturday, Oct. 6, a critical step required to support a comprehensive U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) flight test program.

The aircraft, a Hawker Beechcraft King Air 350ER, has been modified to replicate the design of the EMARSS aircraft's external fuselage. The Boeing team conducted return-to-flight maintenance checks during the 70-minute flight over Middletown, Del.

"First flight is a huge accomplishment, and I'm particularly grateful to Summit Aviation for their hard work in modifying the aircraft," said Randy Price, EMARSS program manager for Boeing. "As we analyze what we learned, we'll continue lowering risk and improving performance, which ultimately will benefit U.S. Army warfighters who will use EMARSS' near real-time intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities."

The FAA flight test program will validate the modified King Air prototype's flight and handling qualities. Following the FAA flight tests, the program will apply for FAA Supplemental Type Certification.

"That FAA certification supports the airworthiness release to be issued by the Army Engineering Directorate for EMARSS," Price said. "We can focus subsequent testing of the Engineering and Manufacturing Development (EMD) aircraft on the mission systems capabilities and operational aspects and qualification of the platform."

SEATTLE, Oct. 22, 2012 – Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., [OTN: SSNLF] announced today that they will explore working together to research and develop technologies that improve in-flight entertainment and communications, as well as enhance factory productivity.

A signed memorandum of understanding between the world's largest aerospace company and the global leader in digital media and digital convergence technologies will help broaden and deepen the Korean industrial ties to Boeing aircraft production.

New Missile Records 1st Operational Test Flight: CHAMP high-powered microwaves degrade or destroy electronic targets without collateral damage

HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah, Oct. 22, 2012 -- A recent weapons flight test in the Utah desert may change future warfare after the missile successfully defeated electronic targets with little to no collateral damage.

Boeing [NYSE: BA] and the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Directed Energy Directorate, Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M., successfully tested the Counter-electronics High-powered Microwave Advanced Missile Project (CHAMP) during a flight over the Utah Test and Training Range that was monitored from Hill Air Force Base.

CHAMP, which renders electronic targets useless, is a non-kinetic alternative to traditional explosive weapons that use the energy of motion to defeat a target.

During the test, the CHAMP missile navigated a pre-programmed flight plan and emitted bursts of high-powered energy, effectively knocking out the target's data and electronic subsystems. CHAMP allows for selective high-frequency radio wave strikes against numerous targets during a single mission.

"This technology marks a new era in modern-day warfare," said Keith Coleman, CHAMP program manager for Boeing Phantom Works. "In the near future, this technology may be used to render an enemy's electronic and data systems useless even before the first troops or aircraft arrive."

CHAMP is a multiyear, joint capability technology demonstration that includes ground and flight tests.
