CFM prepares for ‘scary’ production ramp-up on LEAP program

CFM will produce about 100 LEAP engines this year. But with the LEAP-1B-powered Boeing 737 MAX entering service next year, and LEAP-1A-powered Airbus A320neos already in service, more than 500 LEAP engines are expected to be produced in 2017. That number will more than double to about 1,100 LEAP engines in 2018.

Meet Raytheon’s Drone-Destroying Microwave-Energy Weapon

here is no shortage of innovative ways to shoot down drones. Some companies are pitching lasers, others prefer radio-frequency disruption or, if you prefer explosions, the U.S. Army has tested Raytheon AIM-9X Sidewinder air-to-air missiles and fired course-corrected projectiles with forward-blast fragmentation warheads from a 50-mm Bushmaster cannon. But could a whole swarm be destroyed electronically with a 1-millisec. zap?

The answer may lie with the Phaser system, designed and developed by Raytheon’s Albuquerque, New Mexico-based Ktech group, the same team that worked with Boeing to produce the “CHAMP” counter-electronics cruise missile for the Air Force.

Will 777X And A350 Stretch Into Very-High-Capacity Territory?

If the plans come to fruition, the aircraft could grow to well beyond 400 seats in some of the more dense airline configurations. The fact that such an initiative is being considered shows how far twin widebodies are advancing into the ultra-high-capacity markets that have previously been the exclusive territory of four-engine aircraft such as the Boeing 747and Airbus A380.

Digital Morphing Wing: Active Wing Shaping Concept Using Composite Lattice-Based Cellular Structures

Abstract
We describe an approach for the discrete and reversible assembly of tunable and actively deformable structures using modular building block parts for robotic applications. The primary technical challenge addressed by this work is the use of this method to design and fabricate low density, highly compliant robotic structures with spatially tuned stiffness. This approach offers a number of potential advantages over more conventional methods for constructing compliant robots. The discrete assembly reduces manufacturing complexity, as relatively simple parts can be batch-produced and joined to make complex structures. Global mechanical properties can be tuned based on sub-part ordering and geometry, because local stiffness and density can be independently set to a wide range of values and varied spatially. The structure’s intrinsic modularity can significantly simplify analysis and simulation. Simple analytical models for the behavior of each building block type can be calibrated with empirical testing and synthesized into a highly accurate and computationally efficient model of the full compliant system. As a case study, we describe a modular and reversibly assembled wing that performs continuous span-wise twist deformation. It exhibits high performance aerodynamic characteristics, is lightweight and simple to fabricate and repair. The wing is constructed from discrete lattice elements, wherein the geometric and mechanical attributes of the building blocks determine the global mechanical properties of the wing. We describe the mechanical design and structural performance of the digital morphing wing, including their relationship to wind tunnel tests that suggest the ability to increase roll efficiency compared to a conventional rigid aileron system. We focus here on describing the approach to design, modeling, and construction as a generalizable approach for robotics that require very lightweight, tunable, and actively deformable structures. Keywords: discrete reconfigurable lattice assembly, morphing aerostructure, ultralight elastomeric cellular solid

GE Aviation fires up engine made from 35 percent printed parts [feedly]

3D printing has come a long way since it was big news when a single printed partwas certified for use in an aircraft. General Electric Aviation has gone considerable further as it develops its Advanced Turboprop (ATP) for installation in the Cessna Denali single-engine turboprop aircraft. The new engine will have over 35 percent 3D printed parts. According to GE, this has resulted in a drastic reduction in the number of parts, a five percent weight savings, and a one percent increase in fuel efficiency.

Flexible solar panels are vastly increasing drone endurance

Flexible, thin-film solar panels from a Silicon Valley company are allowing drone makers to keep their craft in the sky for hours longer than is possible with batteries alone.

The panels, from Alta Devices in Sunnyvale, are produced on thin plastic sheets that can be stuck on the top frame of drones like the Bramor ppX, developed by Slovenia’s C-Astral Aerospace.

First LM-100J Commercial Freighter Takes Shape and Gets Its Wings

http://www.lockheedmartin.com/us/news/press-releases/2016/november/first-lm-100j-commercial-freighter-takes-shape-and-gets-its-wings.html

Marietta, Ga., Nov. 3, 2016 – The LM-100J Super Hercules commercial freighter is moving through pivotal production milestones, most recently completing body mate and wing installation at the Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) facility here.

The LM-100J is the commercial version of Lockheed Martin's proven C-130J Super Hercules aircraft — the unmatched tactical military airlifter of choice for 17 nations. The LM-100J will perform as a commercial, multi-purpose air freighter capable of rapid and efficient cargo transport.

The first LM-100J will progress through final production phases over the next few months, with an anticipated first flight in the first half of 2017.

The LM-100J incorporates technological developments and improvements over the existing L-100s that have resulted from years of military C-130J operational experience — including more than 1.3 million flight hours. The result of this experience and advancement translates to an aircraft that will deliver reliable service in a multi-role platform for decades to come.
