U.S. Army flies autonomous Sikorsky Optionally Piloted helicopter [video]

An S-76B commercial helicopter flew over a small crowd gathered at Fort Eustis, Virginia, landed in an adjacent field after adjusting to miss a vehicle, and rose up to hover perfectly motionless for several minutes. The mid-October demonstration was remarkable because the pilot carried out the maneuvers using supervised autonomy in an aircraft equipped with DARPA’s Aircrew Labor In-Cockpit Automation System (ALIAS). He operated the system via novel control interceptors and a tablet he had used for the first time just three days beforehand.

“Hovering in adverse winds is a task that consumes a human pilot’s attention, but automated flight control achieves ‘rock steady’ precision,” said Graham Drozeski, the DARPA program manager for ALIAS, explaining how offloading pilots’ cognitive burden frees them to focus on mission execution.

“Really, we want the pilot’s eyes and mind on the fight rather than holding an altitude. That’s the core focus of ALIAS: bringing the latest advances from unmanned aircraft into a piloted aircraft through an interface that provides fluid interaction with the autonomous capabilities.”

The U.S. Army pilot conducting the demonstration agreed, noting that as autonomous systems become more prevalent, aircraft systems can take on the role of a traditional co-pilot.

“The Army refers to this as Mission Adaptive Autonomy. It’s there when the pilot needs the aircraft to fly itself and keep it free of obstacles, so the pilot can focus on more of the mission commander type role. But the pilot is able to interact with the system to re-suggest, re-route or re-plan on the fly,” said Lt. Col. Carl Ott, chief of Flight Test for the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Research, Development and Engineering Center's Aviation Development Directorate.

During the hour-long flight demonstration, Ott interfaced with the autonomous capabilities of the system to conduct a series of realistic missions, including aircrew tasks such as low-level terrain flight, confined area takeoffs and landings, landing zone selection, trajectory planning, and wire-obstacle avoidance.

Before climbing in the cockpit, Ott practiced the mission plan with the ALIAS simulator, a tool that could help reduce mission planning and preparation time for future operators, allowing them to rehearse maneuvers in advance.

Now in Phase 3, the Sikorsky engineers developing ALIAS have begun to integrate the system into a UH-60 Black Hawk for testing and flight demonstration in 2019. As the biggest fleet of aircraft in the Army and widely relied on by the Department of Defense, Drozeski said the Black Hawk is the ideal platform for ALIAS to quickly benefit service partners.

“We’ve chosen the Black Hawk as the platform we want to demonstrate full integration of ALIAS-type capabilities – all the circuit breakers and switches and instruments in the aircraft, so that the capability ALIAS provides to a crew member is really like a co-pilot,” said Drozeski. “It can fly routes, plan routes, execute emergency procedures, and do all that perfectly.”

  • Highlights of ALIAS’ flexible architecture include:
  • The potential for integration onto multiple fixed and rotary-wing platforms, both military and commercial;
  • Cockpit displays and human interfaces that support reduced workload and/or reduced crew, as well as improved safety, such as terrain avoidance;
  • Full coverage of typical aircrew tasks and emergency procedures;
  • The ability to integrate directly with existing air vehicle systems, subsystems, and mission payloads;
  • Redundancy and software assurance to support certification for human occupancy; and
  • The ability to rapidly integrate new applications including third-party algorithms and applications onto existing aircraft.

Embraer and American Airlines Sign a New Contract for 15 E175s

São José dos Campos, Brazil, November 5, 2018 – Embraer and American Airlines Inc. signed a firm order for 15 E175 jets in a 76-seat configuration. The contract has a value of USD 705 million, based on current list prices, and will be included in Embraer’s 2018 fourth-quarter backlog. Deliveries will take place in 2020. Combined with the airline’s previous orders for the E175, this new contract results in a total of 104 E175 jets for American Airlines since 2013. The most recent order took place in May 2018 for 15 aircraft. American Airlines selected Envoy, a wholly owned subsidiary of American Airlines Group, to operate the 15 aircraft, which will be configured with a total of 76 seats, being 12 in First Class and 64 in Main Cabin, including Main Cabin Extra seats. “This new order from American Airlines continues to show the value that airlines place on our best-selling E175 aircraft,” said Charlie Hillis, Vice President, Sales & Marketing, North America, Embraer Commercial Aviation. “We are fully committed to providing fleet solutions that have a positive bottom line impact, and our E175 leads the charge with over 80 percent market share in the North American market.” Including this new contract, Embraer has sold more than 435 E175s to airlines in North America since January 2013, earning more than 80% of all orders in this 76-seat jet segment. Embraer is the world’s leading manufacturer of commercial jets up to 150 seats. The Company has 100 customers from all over the world operating the ERJ and E-Jet families of aircraft. Bremen, 02 November 2018 – Airbus will deliver the first European Service Module (ESM) for NASA’s Orion spacecraft from its aerospace site in Bremen, Germany on 5 November 2018. An Antonov cargo aircraft will fly the ESM to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA. This is the result of four years of development and construction, and represents the achievement of a key milestone in the project. ESA selected Airbus as the prime contractor for the development and manufacturing of the first ESM in November 2014.



The ESM is a key element of Orion, the next-generation spacecraft that will transport astronauts beyond low Earth orbit for the first time since the end of the Apollo programme in the 1970s. The module provides propulsion, power and thermal control and will supply astronauts with water and oxygen on future missions. The ESM is installed underneath the crew module.



“The delivery of the first European Service Module for NASA’s Orion spacecraft is a hugely significant moment, and NASA’s ground-breaking deep-space mission is continuing to pick up speed. Very soon, the crew module and the service module will come together for the first time at Kennedy Space Center, and integration and testing can then begin,” said Oliver Juckenhöfel, Head of On-Orbit Services and Exploration at Airbus. “Working on the Orion project has cemented our exceptional, efficient and close relationships with our customers, ESA and NASA, and with our industrial partner, Lockheed Martin Space. We are committed to further reinforcing the trust that ESA and NASA have already placed in our know-how and expertise when it comes to the development and construction of the first ESM. We have already begun work on the integration of the second service module in our clean rooms.”



The launch of the Orion spacecraft with NASA’s new Space Launch System rocket is known as Exploration Mission-1 and is scheduled for 2020. This mission will be uncrewed and will take the spacecraft more than 64,000 kilometres beyond the Moon in order to demonstrate its capabilities. The first human spaceflight mission, Exploration Mission-2, is planned for 2022.



The design of the Orion spacecraft enables astronauts to be transported further into Space than ever before. The spacecraft will transport the four astronauts into Space, providing life support for the crew during the flight and enabling a safe return to Earth’s atmosphere, at extremely high re-entry speeds. NASA will use this mission beyond the Moon to develop the capabilities to send humans to Mars – heralding a new era of human spaceflight.



More than 20,000 parts and components are installed in the ESM, from electrical equipment to engines, solar panels, fuel tanks and life support materials, as well as several kilometres of cables and tubing.



The ESM is a cylinder that is around four metres in both height and diameter. Comparable to the European Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV 2008 – 2015), also built by Airbus, it has a distinctive four-wing solar array (19 metres across when unfurled) that generates enough energy to power two households. The service module’s 8.6 tonnes of fuel can power one main engine and 32 smaller thrusters.



At launch, the ESM weighs a total of just over 13 tonnes. In addition to its function as the main propulsion system for the Orion spacecraft, the ESM will be responsible for orbital manoeuvring and position control. It also provides the crew with the central elements of life support such as water and oxygen, and regulates thermal control while it is docked to the crew module. Furthermore, the unpressurised service module can be used to carry additional payload.



During the development and construction of the ESM, Airbus has drawn on its extensive experience as prime contractor for ESA’s ATV, which provided the crew on board the International Space Station with regular deliveries of test equipment, spare parts, food, air, water and fuel.

Vietjet orders 50 more A321neo aircraft

Vietnamese carrier Vietjet has placed a firm order with Airbus for an additional 50 A321neo single aisle aircraft, finalising an MOU signed at the Farnborough International Airshow last July. The purchase agreement was signed in Hanoi today by Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, Vietjet President and CEO and Christian Scherer, Airbus Chief Commercial Officer.

The signing was witnessed by Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Prime Minister of Vietnam and Edouard Philippe, Prime Minister of France, during his official visit to Vietnam.

“The fuel efficient A321neo will enable us to increase capacity and help us to expand the network significantly, especially on international routes,” said Vietjet’s President & CEO Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao. “We are honoured to be a long-term partner of Vietjet and to finalise this new order,” said Christian Scherer, Airbus Chief Commercial Officer. “The airline’s latest preference for the Airbus product, in particular the A321, is a testimony to Vietjet’s professionalism and a great endorsement for the A321 in the highly competitive market.”

The new purchase agreement increases the number of A320 Family aircraft ordered by Vietjet to 171, of which 46 have already been delivered. This leaves the airline with a backlog of 125 aircraft on order with Airbus for future delivery, comprising 120 A321neo and five A321ceo.

The A321neo is the largest member of the best-selling Airbus single aisle family and is firmly established as the most popular aircraft in its size category, seating up to 240 passengers in a single class layout. It also offers the longest range in its category, flying up to 4,000 nautical miles non-stop. Incorporating the latest engines, aerodynamic advances and cabin innovations, the A321neo offers a reduction in fuel consumption of at least 15 per cent per seat.

To date, the A320 Family has won more than 14,700 orders and over 8,000 aircraft are currently in service with 334 operators worldwide.

The A220-300 will first attend the Zhuhai airshow (China) from November 5 until November 8 before flying to Chengdu on November 9. The aircraft will continue on its journey with a stopover in Koh Samui (Thailand) on November 10 before flying to Kathmandu (Nepal) on November 11. After that, the airBaltic A220 will go to Istanbul (Turkey) on November 12 before returning to its home base in Riga (Latvia) on November 14.

The A220 demonstration tour is a great opportunity for Airbus to showcase its newest family member in front of airlines and media, and to offer a close up view of the aircraft`s outstanding characteristics, comfort, and performance, that benefit both operators and passengers alike.

Racer high-speed VTOL demonstrator passes preliminary design review milestone

Airbus Helicopters continues to progress with the development of its Racer (Rapid And Cost-Efficient Rotorcraft) technology demonstrator, funded by European Union’s H2020 framework through the Clean Sky 2 program, and aiming to provide the best trade-off between speed, cost-efficiency, sustainability and mission performance.

After the validation of the demonstrator’s aerodynamic configuration last year, key subsystems have now successfully passed their preliminary design review (PDR) giving way to the launching of first components manufacture. Final assembly of the prototype is planned to start in Q4 2019.

“I want to thank all of our European partners for the excellence of their work and for their commitment in this fantastic project”, said Tomasz Krysinski, Head of Research & Innovation at Airbus Helicopters. “The PDR marks a major achievement for the Racer program as it allows to freeze interfaces and 3D definitions of the main subsystems, prior to detailed design and manufacture of key components.”

Long-lead items are the first ones to be manufactured. Airbus Helicopters teams already launched production of the lateral drive shaft, one of the Racer’s most innovative components. Among key subsystems, Italy’s Avio Aero, a GE Aviation Business, is launching procurement and manufacturing for the aircraft’s lateral gear boxes housing, while Hamble UK based GE Aviation Integrated Systems is taking care of the wing’s titanium cradle part. Romania’s INCAS/Romaero has already started manufacturing the Racer’s composite side panel and Spain’s Aernnova the tail parts primary structure.

Together with its partners, Airbus Helicopters is currently refining the content of the future Racer flight demonstration in Clean Sky 2 which will begin in 2020 and include about 200 flight hours. The first part will focus on the progressive opening of the flight envelope and on assessing key performance objectives as well as speed, handling qualities, stability and aerodynamics. The second phase will aim at demonstrating the aircraft’s suitability to carry out potential missions where increased speed and efficiency would bring significant added value, such as emergency medical services (EMS), search & rescue (SAR) and private transport. This second flight testing phase will also allow to mature low-noise flight procedures, unique to the Racer demonstrator formula.

Geneva - The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has called for urgent action by the UK and the European Union to put in place contingency planning for the continuation of air services in the event of a ‘no-deal Brexit’, and to move much faster to bring certainty to three critical air transport issues:
  • The uninterrupted continuation of air connectivity
  • The framework for regulating safety and security, and
  • The policies and processes needed for efficient border management

“These are the most critical areas because there are no fallback agreements such as the WTO framework available in a ‘no-deal’ Brexit scenario. Without any contingency planning being made transparent to the industry, the risks of not addressing these issues could mean chaos for travelers and interrupted supply chains. With less than six months to go, we have little more certainty than we did in June 2016,” said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s Director General and CEO.

The call for urgent attention to air transport issues in Brexit follows the release of an IATA-commissioned Study of the effects of the United Kingdom leaving the European Union on airlines flying to and from the UK.
Air connectivity and contingency arrangements

Even in the best-case scenario, where a Brexit transition phase is agreed for the period after March 2019, a high degree of uncertainty and risk to air services remains. A no-deal or “hard” Brexit outcome, without an agreement for a transition period, is likely to lead to significant disruption to air services. Moreover, the lack of transparency concerning any contingency planning for this scenario has left airlines completely in the dark as to what measures to take.

“The EU and UK have a responsibility to millions of their citizens who depend on reliable air transportation. The goal should be a comprehensive air services agreement that does not step backwards from the connectivity existing today. But with the possibility of a ‘no deal’ Brexit still on the table this late in the game, it is now essential that the EU and UK civil aviation authorities plan for contingency arrangements to maintain a minimum level of connectivity, which is vital for people and for business. This has to be one of the most important Brexit considerations. A backstop contingency plan to keep planes flying after March must be published, and quickly,” said de Juniac.
Safety and security

The safety and security framework for connectivity between the UK and EU is complex, comprehensive and delivering world-class levels of performance on the industry’s number one priority. There can be no compromise to keeping passengers and shipments safe and secure.

Whatever Brexit scenario unfolds, IATA calls for the UK to remain in the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) at least as a ‘third country member’, and EASA and the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) should be allowed to initiate detailed technical discussions on the future relationship between the two bodies. Mutual recognition of professional licences, standards for materials and parts, and other safety elements, should be put in place to come into effect immediately after March.

Aviation security, for both passengers and cargo, will be highly impacted in case of a no deal scenario. When it comes to recognition of security measures, all parties should work towards a deal where the status quo, is maintained.

“It is ridiculous that formal discussions on the future relationship between EASA and the UK CAA have been forbidden. The situation regarding goods is even more complex, with almost no clarity on customs arrangements. The most likely scenario, even under a transition period, is for shipments to be delayed or disrupted, as new customs procedures become established.

“Interference with the movement of people and goods will have a major and immediate knock-on impact to economic activity in both the UK and the EU. Solutions to minimize disruption are of paramount importance. We must have clarity on future border and customs arrangements now, if we are to plan for an orderly post-Brexit situation,” said de Juniac.

A partir de esta semana Iberia aumenta su oferta a Tokio de tres a cinco vuelos semanales director, un 60 por ciento más.



Esta aumento coincide con el segundo aniversario del inicio de los vuelos a la capital japonesa, en octubre de 2016.





Ahora Iberia vuela desde Madrid los martes, viernes y domingos y, a partir del día 20, se suman los jueves y sábados. Estos serán los horarios de la ruta Madrid-Tokio a partir de este sábado:









Esta ruta es la única que conecta de manera directa España con Japón y esta programación ha sido diseñada para ofrecer también buenas conexiones desde 22 ciudades españolas, entre las que se encuentran A Coruña, Alicante, Asturias, Barcelona, Bilbao, Gran Canaria, Granada, Málaga, Mallorca, Santander o Tenerife.



La buena acogida que ha tenido esta ruta tanto en Japón como en España, ha facilitado que Iberia apueste fuerte por este mercado con un crecimiento del 60 por ciento a partir de ahora. En 2019 ofrecerá más de 150.000 asientos en la ruta.

Las empresas tienen hasta el 2 de noviembre para inscribir su candidatura a estos galardones organizados por Extenda



La Consejería de Conocimiento, Investigación y Universidad ha ampliado, hasta el próximo 2 de noviembre, el plazo para presentar candidaturas a los XIV Premios Alas a la Internacionalización de la Empresa Andaluza 2018. Con estos galardones, organizados por Extenda-Agencia Andaluza de Promoción Exterior, se reconoce la labor de las empresas del sector exterior de la comunidad en los mercados internacionales como las verdaderas protagonistas del gran salto que ha dado Andalucía en materia de exportaciones.



Los Premios Alas se conceden en cinco modalidades: iniciación a la exportación, ecommerce internacional, empresa exportadora, implantación exterior y trayectoria Internacional. Para las cuatro iniciales las empresas deben presentar candidaturas y para la última es el jurado principal el encargado de proponer a las firmas candidatas.



Andalucía vive el mejor momento de su historia moderna en comercio exterior, como segunda comunidad más exportadora de España, siendo la que más ha aportado al crecimiento de las exportaciones nacionales entre enero y julio de 2018. Con el último dato conocido, la región ha exportado en los siete meses de 2018 productos por valor de 19.775 millones de euros, un 9,3% más interanual, con un superávit de 955 millones de euros.



Estos datos refuerzan los de 2017, que cerró como el mejor año de la historia, con 30.913 millones, un 15,3% más que en 2016, y en el que se contabilizó el segundo superávit comercial consecutivo del siglo XXI. Son cifras nunca antes registradas, que están muy por encima de los crecimientos nacionales y de las principales economías avanzadas; y que ratifican la mejor década de la historia, al haberse duplicado la factura exportadora por primera vez en menos de diez años, con un 114% más exportado entre 2009 y 2017.



Esta evolución de las exportaciones supone el mayor cambio experimentado en la economía andaluza en la última década, al haberse duplicado su peso en el PIB regional. Igualmente, contribuye a la creación y viabilidad de empresas y a generar empleo de calidad. En el último ejercicio se sumaron 1.044 nuevas empresas a la exportación, 229 de ellas exportadoras regulares (que llevan al menos cuatro años seguido exportando), y se incrementó en 38.173 los empleos ligados a las exportaciones, para alcanzar un total en Andalucía de 381.859 puestos de trabajo en el sector exterior, 21.871 empresas exportadoras y 5.040 exportadoras regulares.



Con estos datos, se hace más necesario que nunca reconocer y poner de ejemplo ante toda la sociedad la labor que realizan las empresas activas en el exterior y sus profesionales, una tarea que reconoce la Junta de Andalucía desde que en el año 2000 se pusieron en marcha los Premios Alas, que actualmente se convocan de forma bienal.



Cinco modalidades de premios



En su XIV edición, los Premios Alas se otorgarán en cinco modalidades. La primera, que distingue la iniciación a la exportación, está dirigida a las empresas que comienzan su actividad internacional. En la categoría de empresa exportadora se reconoce a las firmas con ventas exteriores consolidadas que van abriendo mercados. En el caso de la implantación en el exterior, se premia a aquellas empresas con inversión internacional; y en la modalidad de ecommerce internacional se distingue a empresas que en el desarrollo de su actividad exterior empleen de forma sistemática y planificada el comercio electrónico o ‘ecommerce’, con la tecnología como método y fin de la comercialización. Por último, la sección de trayectoria internacional, se divide en dos categorías, una para compañías y otra para instituciones o personas que tengan consolidada su presencia y reconocimiento en los mercados internacionales, habiendo contribuido también a dar a conocer Andalucía en el mundo. En esta categoría las empresas candidatas son propuestas por el jurado principal.



Los Premios Alas carecen de dotación económica y su organización la desarrolla Extenda, con la especial colaboración de las delegaciones territoriales de Conocimiento y Empleo de la Junta de Andalucía en las ocho provincias.



Fases y jurados provinciales y regional



El desarrollo de los Premios Alas consta de un plazo de presentación y selección de candidaturas, elección de finalistas provinciales y elección de ganadoras en sus diferentes modalidades. En su desarrollo participan de forma activa, como miembros los jurados (provinciales y regional), empresas de reconocido prestigio, medios de comunicación y representantes empresariales de todas las provincias, así como de la propia Administración.



Las candidaturas que se presenten a las modalidades de iniciación a la exportación, empresa exportadora e implantación exterior accederán a una primera fase de carácter provincial, en la que sus respectivos jurados territoriales podrán designar a una finalista por cada provincia en cada una de estas tres modalidades.



En una segunda fase, el jurado principal, igualmente participativo y presidido por la consejera de Conocimiento, Investigación y Universidad, Lina Gálvez, en su calidad de presidenta de Extenda, designará a las ganadoras por cada modalidad, eligiendo entre las finalistas provinciales de las tres categorías mencionadas.



En el caso de la categoría de ecommerce internacional, el jurado principal decidirá la firma ganadora directamente entre todas las candidaturas que se hayan presentado en toda Andalucía. Además, corresponde a este jurado conceder los dos premios en la modalidad de trayectoria internacional, eligiendo de entre las candidaturas que propongan sus propios integrantes, tanto para la categoría de empresa, como para la de institución o persona.

ELIMCO AEROSPACE lidera un proyecto pionero en Europa para la inspección de espacios interiores mediante drones

El proyecto IDRON permitirá aumentar la eficiencia de los procesos de inspección en espacios confinados, reduciendo los riesgos laborales





Sevilla, 18 de octubre de 2018.- Elimco Aerospace, compañía andaluza especializada en soluciones tecnológicas de alto valor añadido para los sectores aeroespacial, defensa, ferroviario y naval, entre otros, lidera IDRON, un proyecto pionero en Europa para la utilización de drones en la inspección de espacios confinados. La compañía, perteneciente al Grupo Tecnológico Ingemont, está desarrollando esta iniciativa junto a la Empresa Metropolitana de Abastecimiento y Saneamiento de Aguas de Sevilla (EMASESA), la Universidad de Sevilla y el Centro Avanzado de Tecnologías Aeroespaciales (CATEC). Este proyecto, financiado por la convocatoria RETOS Colaboración del Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad, situará a España como referente y líder en Europa en la aplicación de tecnologías para la inspección de este tipo de espacios.



El proyecto IDRON tiene como objetivos minimizar los riesgos laborales y aumentar la eficiencia en los procesos de inspección, así como incrementar la competitividad y diferenciación de las empresas que lo llevan a cabo.



Actualmente, las inspecciones requieren de personal cualificado, con numerosas medidas de seguridad y altos períodos de paradas técnicas en planta, por lo que se convierten en un proceso largo, de elevado coste, tedioso y arriesgado. En este sentido, el proyecto supondrá un avance tecnológico y aportará una serie de ventajas competitivas que permitirán cambiar de forma drástica la forma en la que se realizan este tipo de inspecciones por medios convencionales.



IDRON presenta una serie de factores diferenciadores respecto a otros proyectos, ya que se desarrollará para cualquier tipo de espacio confinado y funciona con un sistema autónomo de navegación por el cual se programa un recorrido con total libertad de movimientos, eliminando el error humano. Además, incluye un sistema de seguridad que le permitirá operar de forma fiable en este tipo de espacios de difícil acceso.



Asimismo, el proyecto IDRON cuenta con un enorme potencial de desarrollo y escalabilidad. El uso de drones autónomos es totalmente aplicable a todo tipo de sectores y en este tipo de entornos es verdaderamente útil, dado que esta tecnología resuelve tareas que reúnen las 3Ds (dirty, dangerous and dull, en su expresión inglesa), proclives a ser automatizadas.

Taiwan’s China Airlines (CAL) has taken delivery of its newest A350-900 aircraft, which features a unique joint livery that combines the airline’s distinctive plum blossom logo with Airbus’ exclusive A350 XWB carbon fibre pattern.


Following this delivery, China Airlines today has 14 A350-900 aircraft in its fleet. The airline operates these aircraft on non-stop long-haul routes, including services from Taipei to Europe and North America as well as on selected routes in the Asia-Pacific region.

Since entry into service in 2015, the A350 XWB has established itself as the new long-range leader in the larger twin aisle category. Over 200 aircraft are already in service with 22 airlines, flying primarily on long-haul routes.

Kourou, 20 October 2018 – The European-Japanese BepiColombo mission to Mercury was successfully launched this morning, Saturday 20 October, at 03:45 am (CET) from the spaceport in Kourou (French Guiana) on an Ariane 5 launcher. The satellite built by Airbus for the European Space Agency (ESA) and Japanese Space Agency (JAXA) is now embarking on its long journey of some 8.5 billion kilometres through the inner solar system, reaching our solar system’s innermost planet in seven years.



After arrival in 2025, for the first time two space probes will simultaneously observe Mercury and its environment. Plans include using cameras to map the planet’s surface more precisely than ever before. Data collected from 16 scientific instruments will provide insights into the geological and chemical composition of the planet, along with its structure, the characteristics of its magnetic field and how it interacts with the solar wind.



“This very complex mission is the result of a truly inspiring international cooperation among 83 companies from 16 European countries and Japan”, said Nicolas Chamussy, Head of Space Systems. “This international effort, with Airbus teams from five countries, is the natural consequence of humanity's desire to discover more about this little known planet and the origins of our solar system. All great missions come with challenges: Airbus had to develop sophisticated thermal control solutions and even “special” solar arrays, capable of tilting 75 degrees away from the Sun to limit the temperature. Now its challenge is to complete the journey safely and deliver the science we're all waiting for."



The Ariane 5 launched ‘Bepi’ into space at ‘escape velocity’ – the speed required for an object to break free of the Earth’s gravitational pull. This will allow the space probe to enter a solar orbit similar to that of the Earth at speeds of around 120,000 km/h. During its journey to Mercury, BepiColombo will make several braking manoeuvres to adjust its orbit, allowing it to make a slow approach towards the planet.



In order to achieve this, the control centre – the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) in Darmstadt, Germany – has plotted a sophisticated course through the inner solar system. It will apply the brakes just 60 days into the journey to reduce Bepi’s speed: an electric propulsion system and a total of nine planetary swing-bys (one of the Earth in April 2020, two of Venus and six of Mercury) will provide BepiColombo with the energy it requires. A maximum of two of the four xenon-propelled ion thrusters will be employed at any one time during the long journey; these will be used on more than 700 days in total, up to four months of which without interruption. The thrusters will be powered by two 1.8 x 14-metre solar arrays. The ion thrusters, a further chemical propulsion system and the solar arrays are located on the Mercury Transfer Module (MTM), the propulsion module for the interplanetary voyage to Mercury.



With the journey totalling some 8.5 billion kilometres – the equivalent of travelling from the Earth to Neptune and back again – Bepi will actually travel 38 times the maximum distance between the Earth and Mercury. After travelling for seven years and completing 18 orbits around the Sun, the MTM will be jettisoned in 2025. From that point onwards, the orbiters will power themselves using solar energy and their own propulsion system. The space probe will then swing into orbit around Mercury before each orbiter enters its own orbit and begins the actual scientific exploration of the planet.

BepiColombo is a joint project of the European Space Agency (ESA) and Japanese Space Agency (JAXA). As the prime industrial contractor, Airbus leads a consortium of 83 companies from 16 countries. ESA, JAXA and Airbus worked together to set the scientific objectives of the mission, a basis that was then used to develop the BepiColombo research satellite. The impressive space probe consists of four elements: ESA’s Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO) and JAXA’s Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter (MMO), the Sunshield and Interface Structure (MOSIF) for the MMO and the Mercury Transfer Module (MTM). BepiColombo is 6.4 metres high and weighs four tonnes. The mission is named after Italian mathematician and engineer Professor Giuseppe ‘Bepi’ Colombo (1920–1984), who was instrumental in the success of the Mariner 10 mission that flew by Mercury three times in 1974-75.

AMSTERDAM--On-demand electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) air-taxi service Lilium is expecting to launch "much sooner" than its 2025 estimate and is scouting possible downtown locations to start the service.
