Aciturri installs the first aircraft parts manufactured with additive technology

- Aciturri is the first Spanish company approved by Airbus to manufacture flying parts with this technology
- The company has been working since 2015 on the design and development of products through additive manufacturing technologies (3D printing) in collaboration with the Idonial technology centre in Asturias
Aciturri Additive Manufacturing, a division of Aciturri, specialized in the development and production of aeronautical components using additive manufacturing technologies, has installed the first flying parts manufactured in Spain using this technology, in the vertical stabilizer (VTP) of an Airbus A350.
Aciturri obtained EN 9100 certification for these parts in 2019 and becomes the first work package provider to be qualified. They are manufactured using molten deposition or FDM (Fused Deposition Modelling) technology in ULTEM 9085, a resistant, lightweight, non-flammable thermoplastic material. These components are part of the installation of the video camera located in the vertical stabilizer, which allows passengers to have a panoramic view of the aircraft from their seat screen, and the long-range transmission antenna that keeps the aircraft in contact with the ground.
One of the strategic objectives of Aciturri is to incorporate the different manufacturing technologies present in the market and to investigate their application in airplane components, both in the structure and in the engine area. In this aspect the additive manufacturing is one of the great revolutions for the aeronautical industry because it makes possible the manufacturing of lighter, reliable and efficient components with a higher complexity than the one achieved with the conventional technologies.
With this purpose Aciturri created in 2015 the company Aciturri Additive Manufacturing and started the work centre of the Scientific and Technological Park of Gijón. Since then, Aciturri has counted on the support of IDONIAL as a long term technological partner, with a solid knowledge of the technology and the necessary experience in its industrial application in various sectors.
The achievement of the first results after almost five years of existence and the consolidation of the company's commitment to the development of this technology, have been possible thanks to the efforts of all the Aciturri team to promote this project.
Saab signs support agreement for GlobalEye

Saab has signed a support agreement with the United Arab Emirates regarding the advanced airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) solution GlobalEye. The agreement is valid between 2020 and 2022, with an order value of 144.9 MUSD.
The agreement covers support and maintenance for the airborne surveillance system GlobalEye.
The support and maintenance will be executed locally in the United Arab Emirates.

Saab Opens a Centre in the UK for Future Combat Air

Saab is to create a new FCAS centre in the United Kingdom as a hub for our participation in the FCAS (Future Combat Air Systems) programme. Saab is committed to build a long term relationship with the UK related to FCAS by investing initially 50 MGBP. The UK and Sweden signed a MoU (https://saabgroup.com/media/news-press/news/2019-07/saab-comments-on-swedish-uk-future-combat-air-announcement/) on FCAS co-operation in July 2019. Saab is leading Sweden’s FCAS industrial participation in close co-operation with Sweden’s Ministry of Defence.

Rolls-Royce has reached agreement with Bell Textron Inc., a Textron Inc. company, to provide the propulsion system for the V-280 Valor aircraft as it moves forward in the competition for the U.S. Army's Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA) Program.
Rolls-Royce will provide the propulsion solution for the refined V-280 Valor design as well as an advanced Infrared Suppressor system to deliver greater range and enhanced survivability to the Army. Through early collaboration on the system from the inlet to the suppressor, Bell and Rolls-Royce will deliver a low-risk and reliable integrated propulsion solution to the Army.

The next phase of the FLRAA program will include competitive demonstration and risk reduction. By combining Bell's advanced aircraft and two years of V-280 flight testing, along with decades of tilt-rotor propulsion experience from Rolls-Royce, Team Valor will bring an advanced, competitive weapon system to the FLRAA program.
Bell manages collaboration and integration with twelve leading companies that make up Team Valor to enable rapid production, systems integration, and deliberate program schedule to validate the V-280's flight capabilities and operational relevance. The V-280 demonstrator has achieved all Bell program goals, flying for more than 170 hours, flying 300 knots, demonstrating low speed agility, as well as performing initial autonomous flight, informing Army FLRAA requirements.

[ESPAÑA] Robles y Guerini afianzan los lazos de España e Italia en política de Defensa común

La lucha de las Fuerzas Armadas contra el Covid-19 y las misiones internacionales han formado también parte de la agenda
La ministra de Defensa, Margarita Robles, ha mantenido esta tarde un encuentro con su homólogo italiano, Lorenzo Guerini, en la sede del Ministerio de Defensa.
A su llegada, Guerini, que ha estado acompañado por el embajador de Italia en España, Riccardo Guariglia, y el consejero diplomático Massimo Marotti, ha recibido los honores reglamentarios. Tras la interpretación de los himnos nacionales se ha producido el saludo de ambas delegaciones.
Durante el encuentro, los titulares de Defensa han abordado cuestiones relativas a la contribución de la Fuerzas Armadas a la lucha contra el Covid-19 y el liderazgo de ambos países, junto a Francia y Alemania, en la Europa de la Defensa. En relación a esta cuestión, Robles ha asegurado que ambos ministros “han hecho una valoración de la actuación de nuestras respectivas Fuerzas Armadas durante la pandemia”, apostando además por “la potenciación de la Sanidad Militar en los ámbitos de Unión Europea y OTAN”.
Margarita Robles ha hecho especial mención a los avances conseguidos durante los últimos años en el proyecto europeísta, resaltando importantes metas como la PESCO (Permanent Structured Cooperation), la EDAP (European Defense Action Plan), el Fondo Europeo de Defensa o el Plan de Desarrollo de Capacidades y de la Base Tecnológica e Industria Europea. La ministra ha insistido en que “junto con Alemania y Francia, vamos a dirigirnos al alto representante para hacer una apuesta por la Seguridad y Defensa, que vaya acorde con el consiguiente apoyo presupuestario”.
Robles ha subrayado que “las políticas de Seguridad y Defensa son esenciales” y por ello ha reclamado “unos fondos suficientes”, dentro de los Fondos de Reconstrucción Europeos para esta materia, porque “garantiza las libertades” y también garantiza “el apoyo a la industria y la creación de puestos de trabajo”.
Así mismo, ambas delegaciones han abordado las posturas comunes compartidas en el ámbito de la OTAN, como son las medidas adoptadas sobre Disuasión y Defensa de la Alianza y la visión hacía el sur para potenciar el nivel estratégico de la misma.
Los ministros de Defensa de España e Italia han querido transmitir de forma contundente y clara que son socios serios, fiables y perfectamente comprometidos con Europa en todos los ámbitos y, por supuesto, en el ámbito de la Seguridad y la Defensa, garantizando derechos y libertades.
En este sentido, la ministra de Defensa española ha insistido en que “España e Italia están comprometidas con la paz, la libertad y la seguridad en el mundo”, recordando que ambos países “son los principales contribuyentes a las misiones internacionales europeas”.
A este respecto, Guerini se ha mostrado convencido de que “Unión Europea y OTAN son pilares de nuestra Seguridad y deben ser vistas como complementarias y no como alternativas”. En relación a los procesos de revisión estratégica de la Alianza Atlántica, ha señalado que “España e Italia pueden aportar una visión común compartida”.
Además, en el ámbito de la ONU, se han expuesto las actualizaciones referentes a la misión UNIFIL y la solicitud del gobierno del Líbano de extender la misma; así como el papel de España en la Diplomacia Internacional Humanitaria, en lo referente a la Seguridad Humana y Mujer, Paz y Seguridad.
Por último, se han repasado las relaciones que ambos países comparten tanto en cooperación bilateral en materia industrial plasmada en los programas de Armamento de la Europa de la Defensa, como en el ámbito operativo.
La ministra de Defensa ha estado acompañada por el jefe de Estado Mayor de la Defensa, general del Aire Miguel Ángel Villarroya, la secretaria de Estado de Defensa, Esperanza Casteleiro, y el secretario general de Política de Defensa, almirante Juan Francisco Martínez Núñez.

BAE unveils smart factory that will build the Tempest fighter

A new intelligent, smart factory is set to increase productivity and revolutionise combat aircraft production in the UK.
A first-of-its-kind industry 4.0 factory is applying game-changing digital technologies to advance manufacturing on the UK’s next generation combat aircraft system, Tempest.
The new facility at BAE Systems’ site in Warton, Lancashire, is the result of a multi-million pound investment and collaboration with more than 40 blue chip and SME companies along with academic institutions. Harnessing the best of UK innovation, the Company has developed a digitally connected, intelligent factory for future military aircraft production.
Bringing together advanced manufacturing technologies, the factory will transform engineering processes. Automated robots, virtual and augmented reality will increase speed, precision and efficiencies, as well as reduce the costs associated with the manufacture of complex military aircraft structures.
The factory also demonstrates a new approach to the way humans and machines can operate together. Cobotic and flexible robotic technologies remove the need for heavy, fixed, long-lead tooling and can quickly switch from the manufacture of one item or platform to another. Intelligent machines and off-the-shelf robotic technology from the automotive industry have been modified to operate at the precise tolerances required for military aircraft, which are less than a third the width of a human hair on some of our programmes.
Such technology drives greater productivity by allowing operators to focus on more highly-skilled and strategic tasks and production managers to oversee operations from a fully digitised, virtual office.
The new facility underpins efforts of the UK-led Tempest programme to meet the UK’s ambition to remain at the forefront of the Combat Air sector by delivering more cost-effectively and in half the time of previous programmes.

Technologies inside the factory are already delivering benefits. The intelligent workstation, developed in collaboration with The University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) and Fairfield Control Systems, is in use on the Typhoon production line. It uses a system which recognises operators and automatically delivers tailored instructions using ‘pick by light’ technologies. In addition, additive manufacturing technologies are being used in the production of Typhoon aircraft parts and assemblies.
BAE Systems and the UK’s aerospace, defence and security sector is world leading, employing hundreds of thousands of people and supporting many more jobs through the supply chain across the country. Together the sector generates £79 billion in turnover, supporting the economy while underpinning national security.

The Department of the Air Force has awarded a nearly $1.2 billion contract for its first lot of eight F-15EX fighter aircraft. The contract, awarded to Boeing, provides for the design, development, integration, manufacturing, test, verification, certification, delivery, sustainment, and modification of F-15EX aircraft, including spares, support equipment, training materials, technical data, and technical support.

The Department of the Air Force has awarded a nearly $1.2 billion contract for its first lot of eight F-15EX fighter aircraft.
The contract, awarded to Boeing, provides for the design, development, integration, manufacturing, test, verification, certification, delivery, sustainment, and modification of F-15EX aircraft, including spares, support equipment, training materials, technical data, and technical support.
The F-15EX will replace the oldest F-15C/Ds in the service's inventory. Eight F-15EX aircraft were approved in the FY20 budget and 12 were requested in the FY21 budget. The Air Force plans to purchase a total of 76 F-15EX aircraft over the five-year Future Years Defense Program.
"The F-15EX is the most affordable and immediate way to refresh the capacity and update the capabilities provided by our aging F-15C/D fleets," said Gen. Mike Holmes, commander of Air Combat Command. "The F-15EX is ready to fight as soon as it comes off the line."
The F-15EX is a two-seat fighter with U.S.-only capabilities. It features a deep magazine that can carry a load of advanced weapons. The platform also requires minimal transitional training or additional manpower and little to no infrastructure changes, ensuring the continuation of the mission.
"When delivered, we expect bases currently operating the F-15 to transition to the new EX platform in a matter of months versus years," Holmes said.
The most significant difference between the F-15EX and legacy F-15s lies in its Open Mission Systems (OMS) architecture. The OMS architecture will enable the rapid insertion of the latest aircraft technologies. The F-15EX will also have fly-by-wire flight controls, a new electronic warfare system, advanced cockpit systems, and the latest mission systems and software capabilities available for legacy F-15s.
"The F-15EX's digital backbone, open mission systems, and generous payload capacity fit well with our vision for future net-enabled warfare," said Dr. Will Roper, Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics. "Continually upgrading systems, and how they share data across the Joint Force, is critical for defeating advanced threats. F-15EX is designed to evolve from day one."
The first eight F-15EX aircraft will be fielded at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, to support testing efforts. The delivery of the first two aircraft is scheduled for the second quarter of FY21. The remaining six aircraft are scheduled to deliver in FY23. The Strategic Basing Process is in work to determine the fielding locations for subsequent aircraft lots.
Saab starts Gripen Production in Brazil

Saab's first aerostructures plant outside of Sweden for the new Gripen E/F fighter, in São Bernardo do Campo, Brazil, reaches another important milestone with the start of production. This site builds sections of Gripen, which will then be delivered to the final assembly facilities at the Embraer plant in Gavião Peixoto, São Paulo, Brazil and to Saab in Linköping, Sweden.
In 2014, Saab signed a contract with Brazilian government for the development and production of 36 Gripen E/F aircraft. In September last year, the first Brazilian Gripen E aircraft was delivered to start the flight test programme. Now, another milestone is reached, as Gripen production starts at Saab’s site in São Bernardo do Campo, in São Paulo in Brazil.
The tail cone and front fuselage of the single-seat version of the Gripen fighter are the first aerostructures to enter into production at Saab’s site in São Paulo. Subsequently, the aerodynamic brakes, rear fuselage, wing box and front fuselage for the two-seater version will also be manufactured there.
“This is another outcome of the Transfer of Technology (ToT) of the Gripen programme. Based on theoretical and practical on-the-job training of Brazilian engineers and assemblers at our Linköping site, we were able to establish a highly qualified production line in our production site in São Bernardo do Campo, following the same standards that we have in our factory in Sweden,” says Jonas Hjelm, head of Saab’s business area Aeronautics.
Currently, Saab has more than 70 highly qualified employees present at the site in São Bernardo do Campo, half of whom are participating or have already participated in the ToT Programme in Sweden. Part of these employees have already completed the training and returned to initiate the production in Brazil.
