EASA Could Mandate 737 MAX Retrofits If Congress Doesn't

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has indicated it may demand safety retrofits to the Boeing 737 MAX regardless of what Congress decides. The two key changes involve an additional angle of attack measuring system and a stall warning silencing switch to enhance the plane's safety. Let's explore this story in greater detail below.

Why Single Jet Commercial Aircraft Aren't Just Around The Corner

Over the past few decades, we have seen commercial airliners transition from four engines to a standard of two. With airline economics so closely tied to fuel efficiency and maintenance costs, along with the evolution of ETOPS certification, this is far from surprising. It would seem that the next logical step on the efficiency ladder would be to move from two engines to fly on just one. After all, there are several general aviation and military aircraft that do just that. So why are we unlikely to see airlines operating commercial aircraft on a single jet engine anytime soon? Let's dive a little deeper into the topic.

Clean Aviation SWITCH Project to Advance Hybrid-Electric and Water-Enhanced Turbofan Technologies

The Sustainable Water-Injecting Turbofan Comprising Hybrid-Electrics (SWITCH) project is focused on developing a novel propulsion concept built from two revolutionary and synergetic technologies: Water-Enhanced Turbofan (WET) and hybrid-electric propulsion. By combining these technologies with Pratt & Whitney's GTFTM engine architecture, the SWITCH concept aims to significantly enhance efficiency and substantially reduce emissions across the full operating envelope of an aircraft. Technologies developed as part of SWITCH will be fully compatible with cleaner alternative fuels – such as Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) — and will be evaluated for future use with hydrogen.
