Udvar-Hazy: Very little 'bottom-line benefit' from narrowbody re-engining

"When I look at all issues and all complexities, it's hard to see a meaningful benefit to the industry [from a narrowbody re-engining] other than in terms of the environment and noise emissions. There I see some PR benefit to the outside world, but in terms of bottom-line benefit to owners of the aircraft, to operators of aircraft, it's a very slim margin."

La aeronáutica vasca facturará 12.000 millones con el Airbus A-350 XWB

Las empresas vascas de aeronáutica ganan peso en el A-350 XWB de Airbus. Las firmas integradas en Hegan, el cluster que aglutina a las firmas de Euskadi de este sector, tienen comprometidos pedidos de 12.000 millones para el nuevo avión de doble pasillo del consorcio europeo.

Al grupo de proveedores vascos para el A-350 XWB se ha unido recientemente DMP con un contrato para fabricar el sistema de amortiguación del tren principal de aterrizaje de 475 aviones. La incursión de DMP, con sede en Mendaro (Guipúzcoa), en la lista se suministradores de Airbus, se realizará a través de la francesa Messier Dowty, líder mundial en trenes de aterrizaje. DMP también provee el mismo sistema a Boeing para el B-787 Dreamliner

Los próximos días 25 al 28 de Octubre estaré en Madrid con motivo de las XIV Jornadas de Estudios Históricos organizadas por AENA.

The 17-day aerial war games, due to start next week in West Bengal, pit the Eurofighter jets against Sukhoi Su-30 multi-role combat jets of the Indian air force.

Sukhoi Superjet 100 has successfully passed noise testing program

October 12, Turin - Under supervision of AR IAC and EASA, the SSJ 100 has successfully passed noise testing program performed as a part of the overall certification campaign. At the Cuneo-Levaldigi airport the aircraft made 8 certification flights. The preliminary results show that the aircraft noise levels show full compliance with ICAO CAEPIV requirements.

Being now cleared by AR IAC and EASA, the same aircraft #95004 is undergoing HIRF testing, in the same premises. HIRF testing methodology was elaborated by the SCAC engineering team in collaboration with Alenia Aeronautica, a Finmeccanica Company, and relevant certification authorities.

HIRF certification is required to demonstrate that the aircraft electric and electronic equipments are not influenced by external electromagnetic fields like those produced by a TV or radio station or by a radar. HIRF testing technique consists in radiating the aircraft with radio waves whose frequencies and levels of emission are set by Certification rules. The aircraft can be electrically powered or unpowered, and engines can also run. The electromagnetic fields and currents on cables inside the aircraft are measured during radiation and avionic equipments are kept under control to check for any malfunction. Telemetry is used to monitor aircraft parameters in real time as well as to avoid people exposure to radiation during tests with powered aircraft.

Sukhoi completed general units’ assembly of the first production Su-35S

Moscow, October 11. Sukhoi Company completed general units’ assembly of the first production Su-35S fighter. The state contract with the Russian Defense Ministry on the delivery of 48 multifunctional super maneuverable Su-35 fighter jets was signed at the 2009 MAKS air show. The works on the contract started in autumn 2009 at the KnAAPO facility of the Sukhoi holding in Komsomolsk-on-Amur.

At the present time the first production Su-35S is at the final assembly shop of the KnAAPO. The preparations are underway for its flight testing. The first production Su-35S will be delivered to the Russian Ministry of Defense by the end of the year.

Su-35 is also intended for export sales. Sukhoi is holding talks with customers in South-East Asia, the Middle East and South America anxious to re-arm their air forces on Su-35 sales.

The Su-35 is a thoroughly upgraded super-maneuverable fighter of the 4++ generation. It employs technologies of the fifth generation that assure its superiority over similar class fighters. The special features of the aircraft include a new avionics suite based on digital information control system integrating onboard systems, a new radar with a phased antenna array having a long aerial target detection range with an increased number of simultaneously tracked and engaged targets (30 aerial targets tracked and 8 engaged plus the tracking of 4 and engagement of 2 ground targets), and new enhanced vectored thrust engines. The Su-35 has a diverse suite of long-, medium- and short-range weapons. It can carry guided aerial munitions for anti-radar and anti-ship actions as well as general purpose munitions, and guided and unguided aerial bombs. The radar signature of the fighter has been reduced by several times as compared to that of the fourth-generation aircraft by coating the cockpit with electro-conducting compounds, applying radio absorption coats and reducing the number of protruding sensors. The service life of the aircraft is 6,000 hours flight hours; the life cycle is 30 years of operation. The assigned service life of vectored thrust engines is 4,000 hours.

Sikorsky Innovations Completes Testing of Hub Mounted Vibration System

Sikorsky Innovations, the technology development organization of Sikorsky Aircraft, has completed rig testing of a Hub Mounted Vibration Suppression system (HMVS), designed to eliminate vibration and deliver a smoother helicopter ride. The effort is jointly funded by Sikorsky and the Aviation Applied Technology Directorate (AATD). Sikorsky Aircraft is a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

“HMVS represents a significant improvement in the control of vibration at its source with less weight than conventional vibration treatments,” said Jim Kagdis, program manager for Sikorsky Advanced Programs. “Combined with our active flap technology, this makes the opportunity for a ‘jet-smooth’ ride a practical reality. Our plan is to install and test flight this vital technology on a Sikorsky helicopter in the next 12 months. We expect to drive this technology into all our products once its commercialization is complete.”
“Vibration, even at the low levels Sikorsky has been able to achieve, takes a toll on crew and passengers as well as the aircraft,” said Mark Miller, Vice President, Research & Engineering. “With the HMVS breakthrough technology, occupants will experience less fatigue and enhanced safety. In addition, operating costs will decrease because equipment will last longer in a virtually zero-vibration environment.”
The key development team member for the project is the LORD Corporation of Cary, North Carolina.

Bell Helicopter AH-1Z Earns Navy Recommendation for full Fleet Introduction

FORT WORTH, TEXAS (October 4, 2010) - Bell Helicopter, a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company, announced today that the U.S. Marine Corps' newest attack helicopter, the AH-1Z Cobra successfully completed Operational Evaluation (OPEVAL).

On Sept. 24, the Navy's Aviation program office (NAVAIR) for H-1 Upgrades received official notification from the Navy's Commander Operational Test and Evaluation Force that its AH-1Z helicopters were found to be "operationally effective and suitable" and were recommended for fleet introduction.

"We are pleased and proud that the AH-1Z has completed its operational evaluation," said John Garrison, president of Bell Helicopter. "The AH-1Z is a remarkable aircraft that is only made stronger by the Marine aviators that fly them. We are excited that our warfighters will receive the full benefit of this awesome machine."

The Marine Corps is replacing the two-bladed AH-1W with the AH-1Z, which features a new, four-bladed composite rotor system, performance-matched transmission, four-bladed tail rotor, upgraded landing gear and a fully integrated glass cockpit.

A total of 189 new and remanufactured AH-1Z helicopters are anticipated, with deliveries expected to be complete by the end of 2019.

The AH-1Z Cobra helicopters are part of the U.S. Marine Corps H-1 Upgrade Program. The program's goal is to replace AH-1W helicopters with new and remanufactured AH-1Zs which provide significantly greater performance, supportability and growth potential over their predecessors.

The H-1 Upgrade Program offers 84 percent commonality of parts between the AH-1Z and UH-1Y utility helicopters. This commonality reduces lifecycle and training costs and decreases the expeditionary logistics footprint for both aircraft.

El presidente del Gobieno hay inaugurado hoy la nueva terminal del aeropuerto de León

El presidente del Gobierno, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, acompañado por el ministro de Fomento, José Blanco, ha inaugurado hoy la nueva Área Terminal del aeropuerto de León, una actuación que ha supuesto la construcción de un nuevo edificio Terminal, aparcamiento para vehículos y autocares, los accesos y viales de circulación, así como la ampliación de la plataforma de estacionamiento de aeronaves.


El Gobierno de España ha invertido más de 29 millones de euros en esta nueva infraestructura para León, de los que 22,1 se han destinado a la nueva ÁreaTerminal y el resto a infraestructuras complementarias, como la remodelación de la central eléctrica, que supuso una inversión de 6,9 millones de euros.

Airbus officials met late last month to finalize details on the A320 New Engine Option (NEO), with much of the focus on having the required engineering resources. But not all issues were resolved, so deliberations are still underway.

However, Gallois says the plan remains to make a decision before year-end; some Airbus officials wanted to request board approval this month. “Airbus is taking its time” to properly assess its resources and ensure it has the engineering capacity to do the NEO program without adversely affecting other developments, Gallois says while visiting Airbus’ Filton site for the opening of the A350 landing gear test building.

The worldwide market for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) will grow from $5.1 billion in 2009 to a cumulative total of $71 billion from 2010 to 2020, predict analysts at Visiongain Ltd. in London in the report "The Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) Market 2010-2020: Technologies for ISR and Counter-Insurgency."

The report examines current programs and future prospects for current and new entrants into the UAV market. Armed forces worldwide are embracing UAVs as critical tools for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), as well as for strike missions in counter-insurgency (COIN) operations.

The pilots have to line up the 747-8 Freighter precisely to where the pool is set up in the middle of the runway.

VIRGIN GALACTIC'S SPACESHIPTWO ACHIEVES MAJOR MILESTONE IN ITS PROGRAM TO BECOME WORLD'S FIRST MANNED COMMERCIAL SPACE VEHICLE.


VSS Enterprise achieves manned free flight from over 45,000 ft (13,700 metres) and successfully glides to land at Mojave Air and Spaceport.

10th October 2010, Mojave, CA. Virgin Galactic, the US company developing the world’s first commercial manned space flight system and tourism business, is delighted to announce the successful completion today of the first piloted free flight of SpaceShipTwo, named the VSS Enterprise. The spaceship was released from its mothership at an altitude of 45,000 ft
(13,700 metres).

During its first flight the spaceship was piloted by Pete Siebold, assisted by Mike Alsbury as co-pilot. The two main goals of the flight were to carry out a clean release of the spaceship from its mothership and for the pilots to free fly and glide back and land at Mojave Air and Space Port in California.

Other detailed objectives of the flight were successfully completed, including; verification that all systems worked prior and following the clean release of Enterprise; initial evaluation of handling and stall characteristics; qualitative evaluation of stability and control of SS2 against predictions from design and simulation work; verification of performance by evaluating the lift-to-drag ratio of the spaceship during glide flight; practice a landing approach at altitude and finally descend and land.

Preparations for the milestone flight were extensive. The WhiteKnightTwo mothership (Eve) flew 40 times including 4 captive carry flights of spaceship and mothership mated together. The most recent captive carry was on Sept 30th. The most recent solo flight was on October 5th and demonstrated that all the systems required for a free flight by the VSS Enterprise were functioning correctly without any safety issues. Commenting on the successful flight Scaled Composites pilot, Pete Siebold, said “The VSS Enterprise was a real joy to fly, especially when one considers the fact that the vehicle has been designed not only to be a Mach 3.5 spaceship capable of going into space but also one of the worlds highest altitude gliders.”

Sir Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Group, who was present during the first successful flight, added “This was one of the most exciting days in the whole history of Virgin. For the first time since we seriously began the project in 2004, I watched the world’s first manned commercial spaceship landing on the runway at Mojave Air and Space Port and it was a great moment. Now, the sky is no longer the limit and we will begin the process of pushing beyond to the final frontier of space itself over the next year.”

Virgin Galactic is now well on the way to becoming the world’s first commercial space line with 370 customer deposits totalling $50 million. Future commercial operations will be at Spaceport America in New Mexico where final preparations are taking place for a finished runway inauguration ceremony on Friday 22nd October 2010. National Geographic channel in the United States will be showing a documentary on the build up and preparation for the first flight of VSS Enterprise on Monday, 18 October at 10.00pm ET/PT.

George Whitesides, CEO of Virgin Galactic who was also present at the historic flight, added “To see the world’s first manned commercial spaceship landing on a runway is a sight I always dreamed I would behold. Now, our challenge going forward will be to complete our experimental program, obtain our FAA licence and safely bring the system into service at Spaceport America, New Mexico.”

Washington, D.C. – The Commercial Spaceflight Federation is pleased to congratulate Scaled Composites, Virgin Galactic, and the SpaceShipTwo team for successfully conducting today’s first-ever glide flight of the SpaceShipTwo suborbital spacecraft. Over the Mojave Desert this morning, Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo was released from carrier aircraft WhiteKnightTwo at an altitude of 45,000 ft. and descended for about 15 minutes before landing at the Mojave Air and Space Port.

“First flight days are always extraordinary,” said Stu Witt, General Manager of the Mojave Air and Space Port. “This team effort by so many has been punctuated by a successful first test flight, and now everyone seeking a ride to space is a giant step closer.”

SpaceShipTwo and WhiteKnightTwo are being developed for Virgin Galactic by legendary aircraft development firm Scaled Composites. The vehicles build on the success of SpaceShipOne, the first privately-built vehicle to fly a person into space, which won the $10 million Ansari X PRIZE for its achievements. SpaceShipTwo will carry six people in addition to two pilots, providing those on board with a view of space and several minutes of weightlessness once space flights begin. Eventual operational flights of SpaceShipTwo will occur from Spaceport America in New Mexico.

Russian Air Force to receive first Su-35 by yearend - Sukhoi

The Russian Defense Ministry will receive its first Su-35 fighter plane by the end of the year, Russia's Sukhoi Aircraft Design Bureau said on Monday.

The first modernized Su-35 was presented at the 2007 MAKS air show outside Moscow. The Russian Defense Ministry signed a deal with Sukhoi on the purchase of 48 modernized Su-35 jets in 2009.
