Additional certification high altitude trails of the Sukhoi Superjet 100 completed

October 12, 2011, Moscow — The Sukhoi Superjet 100 (SSJ100) aircraft successfully went through additional certification trials on expanding operational conditions at the high altitude airports. Trials involved SSJ100 flight prototype MSN95004 and took place in the airport of Toluca, Mexico, from 14 to 30 September 2011. The airport is located at the altitude of 2,580 meters over the sea level. The aircraft came back to airfield of Zhukovsky, Moscow Region, Russia, on October 10, 2011.

Extensive ground and flight tests proved the proper functioning of the aircraft systems, equipment, engines and APU and confirmed declared takeoff and landing aircraft performances.

In Toluca the SSJ100 aircraft was also shown to the president and management of Interjet Airlines of Mexico which ordered 15 such aircraft in January 2011.

The report on the additional high altitude trials is being completed. It will be submitted to the Aviation Register of the Interstate Aviation Committee to get Supplement to the SSJ100 Type Certificate.

Sukhoi Superjet 100 (SSJ100) is a 100 seat regional jet designed, developed and built by Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company (SCAC), in partnership with Alenia Aeronautica. On May 19th 2008 SSJ100 successfully accomplished its first flight. The Sukhoi Superjet 100 cruises at a Maximum Operating Speed of Mach 0.81 and 40.000 feet. It takes off from a 1.731 meters runway in the basic range and 2.052 meters in the long range. The operating range for the basic version is 3.048 km and 4.578 km for the long range version. In February 2011, the SSJ100 obtained the Type Certificate by the Russian Certification Authority IAC AR. The EASA certification is expected to follow in 2011. On April 19th 2011 first production SSJ100 was delivered to Armavia airlines (Armenia). There are currently three SSJ100s in service with Armavia and Aeroflot.

Airbus Military reconocida como Empresa Innovadora del año 2011

La Asociación de Parques Científicos y Tecnológicos de España (APTE), con apoyo del Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación, entrega hoy a Airbus Military el Premio Sello Innovación 2011 en la categoría de Mejor Empresa.
Este galardón reconoce las aportaciones realizadas por la compañía en materia de I+D, el capital humano que emplea en este ámbito, así como el impacto económico que generan las innovaciones desarrolladas en el seno de Airbus
Military.

Entre  éstas  destaca especialmente el  demostrador  C295 AEW (Airborne Early Warning), una nueva versión de la versátil y exitosa plataforma C295. Este nuevo modelo, un avión de alerta temprana que será capaz de detectar otros aviones que se encuentren en un radio de 400 kilómetros, se presentó en París el pasado junio durante el Salón Aeronáutico de Le Bourget. La nanotecnología es otro de los ámbitos en los que Airbus Military  lleva a cabo una línea de investigación. Su objetivo es mejorar la conductividad eléctrica de estructuras de fibra de carbono.

Otros proyectos de innovación en los que trabaja la compañía son  la búsqueda de un método que permita consolidar materiales compuestos sin necesidad de autoclave; la tercera generación del sistema de verificación en tierra de los sistemas instalados en un avión; un demostrador de realidad aumentada para ayudar a los operarios en el proceso de montaje de aviones; o el proyecto Digital Factory, que supondrá un salto tecnológico en la gestión y ayuda al montaje final de aviones.

Air France and Airbus undertake green commercial flight

Flight CO2 emissions halved

Air France and Airbus have completed the world’s greenest commercial flight by combining the latest fuel and air traffic management technologies. The flight from Toulouse-Blagnac to Paris-Orly using an Airbus A321 has been able to demonstrate the cutting in half of CO2 emitted compared to a regular flight.

The (AF6129) commercial flight combined for the first time the use of bio-fuels (50 per cent in each engine), optimised air traffic management (ATM) and efficient Continuous Descent Approach (CDA) to minimise CO2 emissions.

Combining these technologies helped half the overall CO2 emissions to 54 grams per passenger and kilometre. This is equivalent to a fuel efficiency of 2.2 litres of fuel per passenger and 100 Kilometres.

Bio-fuel is one solution for reducing overall CO2 emissions. Airbus’ alternative fuel strategy is to speed up its commercialisation through sustainable bio-fuel value chains. Thanks to several test flights and collaboration with the fuels standards bodies (ASTM and DefStan), today the use of 50 per cent bio-fuel blends are authorised in commercial flights.

A more efficient ATM system could also help reduce the amount of fuel burned by aircraft and therefore the CO2 emitted. Airbus strongly supports the streamlining of ATM and has launched a new subsidiary company, called “Airbus ProSky”, dedicated to the development and support of modern air traffic management (ATM) systems to achieve the highest operational efficiencies with more direct routings resulting in around 10 percent less aircraft fuel consumption, as well as significant reductions in CO2 and noise emissions.

CDA is becoming more widespread as a way to reduce fuel burn. During a CDA procedure, the aircraft descends continuously, avoiding level flight prior to the final approach and requires significantly less engine thrust and therefore less fuel burn.

British Prime Minister opens new Airbus wing factory for A350 XWB

Aircraft programme will support over 6,000 jobs across the UK

The British Prime Minister, the Rt Hon David Cameron, officially opened Airbus’ new £400 million wing factory in Wales this afternoon, a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility which will assemble the wings for Airbus’ advanced new A350 XWB long-range aircraft family.

The Prime Minister joined hundreds of guests and Airbus employees to unveil the giant, environmentally friendly Airbus North Factory at Broughton, Flintshire where 650 people will eventually work. Bigger than Wembley Stadium, it is one of the largest manufacturing facilities to be built in the UK in recent years and will produce high-tech carbon fibre ‘composite’ wings for the A350 XWB.

The A350 XWB programme will support over 1,200 jobs in the Airbus sites at Filton and Broughton and over 5,000 other high skill/high value jobs across the UK supply chain. Over £3 billion has been invested in the aircraft and its engines by UK aerospace companies in the programme which underpins the key position of the UK as a global centre of aerospace manufacture.

Prime Minister David Cameron said: “The Government is committed to building a more balanced economy with stronger manufacturing, exports and private investment, creating jobs and opportunities across the UK. I welcome the opening of Airbus's new state of the art facility which will contribute to this and support our programme to create sustainable economic growth. The North Factory assembly line is dedicated to assembling the 31 metre long wings for all members of the A350 XWB Family which is scheduled to enter service by the end of 2013. Currently employing 6,000 people, the 700 acre Airbus site at Broughton specialises in wing production and has a proud tradition of aerospace manufacture going back over 70 years. Over £1.8 billion has been invested into the site in the past decade ensuring it is one of the most modern manufacturing facilities of its type anywhere in the world.

Eurocopter strengthens its Colombian market presence with Helistar’s order for three more EC145 helicopters


Mexico City, October 12, 2011
Colombian operator Helistar has signed a contract with Eurocopter de México, subsidiary of Eurocopter Group, to purchase three EC145s.

With these three new helicopters, the fleet of Colombia's largest helicopter company will expand to include seven EC145s. The first two additional aircraft will be delivered in 2012, followed by the third in 2013. Helistar currently has a fleet of 18 aircraft, providing services for the country's leading energy companies.

Among the broad spectrum of missions offered by the company, Helistar specializes in passenger transport for the oil and gas sector – which currently is experiencing strong growth within Colombia. This new purchase follows the finalization of a five-year services contract between Helistar and the Colombian oil company Ecopetrol.

The EC145 is at the top of its class in the medium-sized, twin-engine helicopter category, and is perfectly adapted to the needs of the oil and gas industry. This compact and modern helicopter is ideal for medium-range flights with 8 to 10 passengers. EADS North America readies its Armed Aerial Scout 72X helicopter for competitive fly off demonstration

Armed Aerial Scout 72X (AAS-72X) arrives at AUSA Convention

WASHINGTON, Oct. 10, 2011 — In anticipation of a competitive flight demonstration, EADS North America's Armed Aerial Scout 72X (AAS-72X) is on display at the Association of the U.S. Army (AUSA) convention this week in Washington, DC.

The AAS-72X, an armed derivative of the Army's UH-72A Lakota Light Utility Helicopter manufactured by the company's American Eurocopter business unit, has completed the majority of its militarization requirements in a company-funded development effort that began in 2009.

EADS North America also announced at AUSA that Rockwell Collins (NYSE: COL) has joined the AAS-72X team and will be responsible for the design, engineering and production of simulation and training devices in support of U.S. Army operator and maintainer requirements.

A highly capable helicopter for the Armed Aerial Scout mission, the AAS-72X combines the safety of a twin-engine aircraft and the high/hot operating performance necessary to meet the Army's demanding Armed Scout mission. Derived from the same family of aircraft as the UH-72A Lakota Light Utility Helicopter, the AAS-72X is a low-risk evolution of the U.S. Army's newest rotary-wing aircraft, which is widely considered one of the most successful acquisition programs in the service's history.

The EADS North America-led industry team of American Eurocopter and Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) has made a significant investment in the development of three AAS- 72X Technical Demonstrator Aircraft (TDA), which have been used to conduct parallel development and risk reduction activities, and to demonstrate the armed scout's level of capability and technical maturity. The first TDA Aircraft made its maiden flight in December 2010.

Prior to the start of the TDA program, the company conducted high/hot hover-out-ofground- effect, endurance and payload testing in 2009 at Alamosa, Colo. utilizing a helicopter derived from the UH-72A Lakota/EC145 platform family. In that test the helicopter successfully operated at 6,000 feet and 95-degree density altitude. The team also conducted a key transportability test when five aircraft were successfully loaded in a C-17 transport aircraft. Additionally, EADS North America and Lockheed Martin established a System Integration Laboratory (SIL) and hangar in April 2010 at Lockheed Martin's Orlando, Fla. facility.

The AAS-72X demonstration aircraft is equipped with a Mission Equipment Package (MEP) that includes a chin-mounted turret with integrated targeting sensor, mannedunmanned teaming capability, communications suite and weapons. All MEP items already are in the Army inventory.

Production of the AAS-72X will take place at American Eurocopter's Columbus, Miss. helicopter center of excellence where the UH-72A Lakota is currently manufactured for the U.S. Army. EADS North America has delivered more than 190 UH-72A Lakotas to the Army, all on time and within budget, along with five H-72A versions to the U.S. Navy for test pilot training.

CASSIDIAN and Northrop Grumman present first EURO HAWK® for German Armed Forces

EURO HAWK®, the premier Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) for the German Armed Forces, was presented today to government officials and media during a rollout ceremony held in Manching, Germany. The UAS arrived on 21 July 2011 following a nonstop ferry flight from Edwards Air Force Base in California to Manching. After its landing, it was successfully fitted with the Integrated Signal Intelligence System (ISIS) developed by Cassidian and will undergo flight testing in 2012. EURO HAWK® is the first international configuration of the RQ-4 Global Hawk High Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) UAS. Delivery of the first EURO HAWK® system to the German Air Force and Strategic Intelligence Command (KSA) is scheduled for 2012, with delivery of the following four systems foreseen between 2015 and 2016.

With a wingspan larger than a commercial airliner, endurance of 30 hours and a maximum altitude of more than 60,000 feet, EURO HAWK® is an interoperable, modular and cost-effective replacement to the aging fleet of manned Breguet Atlantic aircraft which was in service since 1972 and officially retired in 2010. More than 1,000 aircraft will be needed within the next 20 years in Russia

Russia ranks sixth among the top 10 countries for passenger aircraft demand

Russian carriers will need more than 1,000 passenger aircraft over the next 20 years in response to the strong traffic growth, according to the latest Airbus Global Market Forecast (GMF). The forecast ranks Russia sixth in the top ten countries for passenger aircraft demand after US, China, India, Germany and UK.

The Russian passenger aircraft fleet of 100 seats or more is expected to grow strongly from 519 aircraft in service in 2010 to 1,058 by 2030. This means that over the next 20 years Russian airlines will need 1,006 aircraft, valued at US$ 95 billion to meet fleet growth as well as aircraft replacement. These additional aircraft will include some 839 single-aisle aircraft which are currently prominent in the region’s fleet, 145 wide-bodies and some 22 Very Large Aircraft (VLA) to satisfy strong international travel growth.

The growing demand for aircraft is the consequence of the impressive increase of passenger traffic in Russia driven by consistent economic growth and the ongoing airline consolidation. According to Airbus forecast, passenger traffic in Russia is expected to increase at a rate of 5.6 per cent per year on average over the next 20 years, which is much faster than the world average of 4.8 per cent. The biggest traffic growth is expected to be on international destinations from Russia to Asia-Pacific (+7%) and CIS regions (6.7%).

“We see very strong demand for new, fuel-efficient aircraft in Russia and forecast the need for over 1000 aircraft in the forthcoming 20 years. We intend to get at least half of the deliveries in the region”, said Christopher Buckley, Executive Vice President Europe, Asia and the Pacific. “Russia remains a strategic market for Airbus. This year we have significantly extended our Airbus operators’ base in Russia by three new airlines and we expect to have another two to three by the end of the year”.

For nearly 20 years Airbus has been developing co-operation with the Russian aviation industry, with both sides demonstrating the will to build a long-term mutually beneficial partnership. This includes the implementation of a wide range of research and technology projects, the establishment of an Airbus Engineering Centre in Moscow (ECAR), material purchase and components manufacturing. Such a comprehensive and unique program allows Russia to participate as an equal partner in all major stages of Airbus aircraft development.

Today, nine Russian airlines operate over 170 Airbus aircraft. Over 80 jets are scheduled for delivery in the forthcoming years.

Boeing Unveils Newest Business Jet for Chinese Charter Market

LAS VEGAS, Oct. 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) Business Jets unveiled the latest BBJ to enter the Chinese charter market at the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) conference in Las Vegas this week.

The new BBJ, owned and operated by Deer Jet of Beijing, is the second of four BBJs for the airline making it the largest BBJ charter operator in China.

"It's no surprise BBJ is dominating the airplane charter business in Asia," said Steve Taylor, BBJ president.

Sales of BBJs to private individuals in Asia are extremely strong as well. One reason is that the BBJ can fly further than its competitor's airplanes.  Range is very important to buyers in the region, due to the great distances from Asia to Europe and North America.

Boeing Opens China Service Center in Beijing

Focuses on enhanced product support for commercial airlines

Boeing Delivers First 747-8 Freighter to Cargolux

Newest Boeing freighter brings increased efficiency to market

EVERETT, Wash., Oct. 12, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) and Cargolux Airlines shared another milestone in the history of the iconic 747, as the airline took delivery of the first Boeing 747-8 Freighter today. Following delivery at the Boeing Delivery Center at the company's Everett site, the airplane departed for Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, where the new freighter will receive its first cargo load, destined for Cargolux headquarters in Luxembourg.

Boeing, Cargolux and Nippon Cargo Airlines announced the initial orders for the 747-8 Freighter in November 2005. Today's delivery comes nearly 18 years after Cargolux was the recipient of the first Boeing 747-400 Freighter, which went on to become the workhorse and standard of the air cargo industry.

The new model carries a maximum structural payload capacity of 147.6 tons (133.9 metric tonnes) while providing the same nose-door loading capability, industry-standard 10-foot (3-m) -high pallets and real-world cargo density capability at 9.9 pounds per cubic foot (159 kg/m3) as the industry standard 747-400 Freighter and maintaining interlining capability with the Boeing 777 Freighter.

The new GEnx-2B67 engines incorporate the latest technologies – such as a composite fan case and blades and a revolutionary turbine – to create double-digit efficiency gains over the engines it replaces.

SuperJet International launches the Sukhoi Business Jet with a 200 million dollars order from Comlux The Aviation Group

October 9, 2011, Las Vegas — SuperJet International -the joint venture between Alenia Aeronautica, a Finmeccanica Company, and Sukhoi Holding — has announced today a purchase agreement for two Sukhoi Business Jet (SBJ) aircraft plus two additional options, with Comlux The Aviation Group.

With this order Comlux becomes the launching customer of SuperJet International for this new type of VIP aircraft. Comlux represents one of the most innovative business aviation group worldwide, able to always offer to its VIP passengers new products for their travel needs.

The deliveries of the two SBJ aircraft are planned for the 2014. The order has an estimated value of US $200 million, including options.

Before the entry into service, the VIP cabin interior of the aircraft will be designed and outfitted by Comlux America, the completion center of the Comlux Group, based in Indianapolis USA. Comlux America is appointed as the first approved Sukhoi Business Jet completion Center.

The Sukhoi Business Jet is the VIP aircraft version of the Sukhoi Superjet 100 regional airliner. It offers a spacious and ultra quiet cabin of 118 m3 / 4192 ft3, and a range of approximately 4300 nm (8000 km), thanks to its additional fuel tanks. The launch of the VIP aircraft version comes just four months after the successful entry-into-service of the SSJ100 in April 2011.

Indian company Aviotech, corporate and defense aerospace specialist is to become important launch customer for JSC “Sukhoi Civil Aircraft” for the business version of the Sukhoi Superjet 100. The relevant letter of intent for 10 SBJ in VIP configuration and 10 aircraft in option was signed at the International Aviation and Space Salon MAKS-2011. Security and Support Battalion MEP continues to expand and evolve the UH-72A Lakota’s mission capabilities

Lakota fleet reaches 75,000 total flight hours, maintaining 90 percent Operational Availability rate

EADS North America has achieved another significant milestone on the UH-72A Lakota Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) program with the delivery of Lakotas to the National Guard outfitted with the Security and Support (S&S) Battalion Mission Equipment Package (MEP).

The UH-72A Lakota, built in Mississippi by the company’s American Eurocopter business unit, is one of the U.S. Army’s most successful acquisition programs and is repeatedly noted by DoD officials for its on-time and on-budget deliveries.

“This highly capable configuration is the latest and most significant evolution of the Lakota and the missions it is asked to perform,” said Sean O’Keefe, CEO of EADS North America. “These S&S Battalion Lakotas provide our Army National Guard units with the ability to effectively respond at a moment’s notice to a wide range of operational assignments including natural disasters, search and rescue operations, border protection missions and law enforcement support.”

Lakotas equipped with the S&S Battalion MEP will be operated by Army National Guard units across the country. The S&S Battalion MEP will greatly expand the capabilities of the Army’s UH-72A Lakota Light Utility Helicopters and further demonstrates the platform’s flexibility for growth and mission-specific configurations.

Currently 68 of the 99 anticipated S&S Battalion MEP installations are on contract. Of the 68 on contract, 52 Lakotas will be built with the S&S Battalion MEP integrated during production, and 16 Lakotas already in service with the Army National Guard will be retrofitted at the company’s American Eurocopter facility in Columbus, Miss.

The S&S Mission Equipment Package contains a centerline electro-optical infrared (EO/IR) sensor, a 30 million candle power search light, analog/digital video downlink, rear observers’ console with a 15-inch display, an enhanced tactical communications suite, an onboard digital video recorder, 10.4-inch auxiliary displays for the pilot and co-pilot, and a video management system.

The Lakota is based on the commercially successful EC145 multi-role helicopter and was developed by EADS’ Eurocopter division. As part of EADS North America’s commitment to the U.S. Army, the company’s American Eurocopter business unit created a dedicated UH-72A manufacturing facility in Mississippi capable of sustained annual output of 55 Lakotas.

UH-72A Lakotas are operating from 33 locations in the continental U.S., Puerto Rico, Germany and the Kwajalein Atoll. The U.S. Army has ordered 237 UH-72As to date out of a total program of 345 helicopters through 2015. To date 190 aircraft have been delivered to the Department of Defense, including five for the U.S. Navy Test Pilot School.

The U.S. Army is using Lakotas in multiple configurations to fulfill a range of missions, including medical evacuation, search and rescue operations, homeland security, VIP transport, disaster response and relief, general aviation support, combat flight training and pilot sustainment training.

EADS North America also provides the Army with FAA-certified flight and maintainer training. More than 600 pilot and nearly 400 maintenance personnel have completed classes at American Eurocopter’s headquarters facility in Grand Prairie, Texas. The Lakota program also includes full and hybrid contractor logistics support to the Army and Army National Guard, and modifications and retrofit of mission equipment packages onto existing aircraft.

The UH-72A is a Defense Acquisition Category (ACAT) I major defense acquisition program. Deliveries of the aircraft to the Army and Army National Guard allow aging OH-58 and UH-1 rotary-wing aircraft to be retired, while freeing up UH-60 Black Hawks for assignment to combat missions.

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif., Oct. 10, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The U.S. Navy/Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) X-47B Unmanned Combat Air System Demonstration aircraft reached a major milestone Sept. 30 when it retracted its landing gear and flew in its cruise configuration for the first time.

The flight, conducted at Edwards Air Force Base, also helped validate precision navigation hardware and software that will allow the X-47B to land with precision on the moving deck of an aircraft carrier.

"Last week's flight gave us our first clean look at the aerodynamic cruise performance of the X-47B air system…and it is proving out all of our predictions," said Janis Pamiljans, vice president and Navy UCAS program manager for Northrop Grumman's Aerospace Systems sector. "Reaching this critical test point demonstrates the growing maturity of the air system, and its readiness to move to the next phase of flight testing."

The recent flight was part of an on-going "envelope expansion" program for the first of two X-47B aircraft produced by Northrop Grumman for the Navy's Unmanned Combat Air System Carrier Demonstration (UCAS-D) program. Envelope expansion flights are used to demonstrate aircraft performance under a variety of altitude, speed and fuel load conditions.

The UCAS-D program plans to begin transitioning aircraft to Naval Air Station, Patuxent River, Md. in late 2011 to begin shore-based carrier suitability testing in 2012. The focal point of the program is to demonstrate in 2013 the first aircraft carrier launches and recoveries by a tailless, low-observable-relevant unmanned system.

The Navy and Marine Corps Select Lockheed Martin/Kaman Unmanned K-MAX for Afghanistan Deployment

OWEGO, N.Y., October 5th, 2011 -- The Marine Corps will deploy the Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] and Kaman [NASDAQ-GS: KAMN] unmanned K-MAX® to Afghanistan next month.
 
The decision follows the successful completion of a five-day Quick Reaction Assessment for the U.S. Navy's Cargo Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) program. A formal report, released last week by Commander Operational Test and Evaluation Force, confirmed that the unmanned K-MAX exceeded the Navy and Marines' requirement to deliver 6,000 pounds of cargo per day.
 
"This announcement underscores K-MAX's strong performance and the strength of the Lockheed Martin/Kaman team," said Dan Spoor, vice president of Aviation Systems in Lockheed Martin's Mission Systems & Sensors. "We are fully prepared to deploy our system and augment Marine Corps ground and air logistics in Afghanistan."
 
K-MAX will be the Navy's first-ever cargo unmanned aircraft system to deploy in an operational environment. The deploying team recently concluded training and flight tests at its base in Twenty-nine Palms, Calif., and is currently preparing the aircraft for shipment into theater. The team consists of active duty mission commanders, air vehicle operators and Lockheed Martin employees.

Qantas and Airbus seal biggest order in Australian aviation history: Firm order for 78 A320neo and 32 A320s

Qantas and Airbus have finalised a contract for 110 A320 Family aircraft, to help with the airline's fleet renewal and expansion plans in the coming years. The firm order for 78 A320neo and 32 A320s is the largest single order in Australian aviation history by aircraft units and follows a commitment signed in August.
 
The new aircraft will be deployed across the Qantas Group on short to medium haul domestic and international operations and underpin the airline's commitment to build a fleet with the most fuel efficient and reliable aircraft in the market.

British Airways selects Airbus Flight Hour Services for its A380 fleet

British Airways, an International Airlines Group company, has selected Airbus Flight Hour Services (FHS) to provide aircraft inventory support for its A380 fleet of aircraft.
 
The FHS agreement, which will run for 15 years, provides an extensive scope of A380 line replaceable units (LRUs), spare parts, repairs and logistics services to British Airways Engineering. In addition, it will feature the deployment of a non-exclusive pool of A380 LRU spare parts at London Heathrow Airport, the major A380 hub in Europe.
