This paper focuses on the unique and vital capabilities of the US Air Force's KC-135 tanker fleet. It analyzes historic and current tanker usage, tanker operational employment, and the capability of today's tanker fleet, with emphasis on force structure and force management. In light of decreasing budgets, aging airframes, increase downtime for maintenance, and an explosion in the operations tempo, this paper proposes a four-pronged methodology addressing tanker vision, organization, training and employment, as the correction needed to get the KC-135 weapon system back on centerline. This will allow the tanker to effectively aid the Air Force in successfully deterring conflict and, if needed, quickly win the nation's future wars.

The tanker contest is back where it belongs; in the hands of the Air Force.
Secretary of Defense Robert Gates says he will keep a close eye on the situation, but now trusts the Air Force to do what's best for the Air Force.
This news has Boeing shaking in their pumps. The Air Force already decided which refueling tanker they liked best. Their choice was the Northrop Grumman/EADS plane. It wasn't even close. The KC-45 won by a landslide. Had the last competitive bid been a Little League game it would have been called in the 2nd inning.

with aircraft manufacturer Airbus on the development of a semi-robotic
towbarless tractor called the TaxiBot Dispatch Towing System.
Major components of the TaxiBot concept include a towbarless FMC
Technologies (now JBT AeroTech) PTS-1 tug equipped with a unique
mechanical interface to the nose landing gear; a low-level control
function for driving the vehicle; and a vehicle electronics system
that provides high-level control for managing towing operations while
in pilot-control mode.

New Zealand's Martin Aircraft Company unveiled its innovative new

Now they have announced another history making event, an auction on

fully fledged test pilot.
Aviation insiders will understand that it is highly unusual to offer

WASHINGTON — Responding to criticism that his agency has become too
cozy with companies it regulates, the new head of the Federal Aviation
Administration said Thursday the FAA will stop calling airlines
"customers," as he announced steps to ensure air carriers comply with
safety orders.
FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt, who took over the agency in June,
outlined a series of initiatives that address complaints by members of
Congress and others that the agency's relationship with airlines was
placing the industry's economic interests above passengers' safety.
During the Bush administration, the FAA adopted a business model for
evaluating its performance and began calling airlines, aircraft
manufacturers and others that it regulates "customers." The new term
is "stakeholder."

September 17, 2009: Once more, developers are working on weapons that enable submerged submarines to attack aircraft overhead. There was recent successful test of the U.S. Tomahawk Capsule Launching System (TCLS) releasing a AIM-9X Sidewinder air-to-air heat seeking missile. This is all part of an effort that began during the Cold War, particularly for non-nuclear subs. While most of this work halted when the Cold War ended in 1991, it has since been resumed.

A prototype for future PC-based unmanned air vehicle ground control stations developed for NASA's two Northrop Grumman Global Hawks is also a cause for the five-month delay of the UAV's first flight.

The US FAA has issued a safety alert calling on airlines and air taxi operators to review their existing policies and procedures aimed at preventing flight crew fatigue for short-haul flights.
The interim action occurs as the agency mulls potential pilot rest rule changes developed by an aviation rulemaking committee (ARC). Efforts to overhaul the decades-old rules gained traction in June after pilot fatigue was identified as a potential factor in the February crash of a Colgan Air Q400 commuter aircraft.

F-15C Eagle air superiority fighters have traditionally used APG-63 radars with mechanically steered arrays. While upgrades over the years have improved them, the mechanical steering components are a point of potential failure given the stresses put on them, and better radar technologies have appeared. With cruise missile defense rising in importance, and longer-range detection of threats desired, upgrades are necessary. They may also correct a known air-air weakness that can reputedly be exploited by aircraft like Russia's SU-30 family, though other reports claim that the mechanically-scanned APG-63v1s have also worked to close that hole. Thus far, 18 USAF F-15Cs have been modified to carry APG-63v2 radars – a misnomer, since the upgrade uses a revolutionary new AESA technology that bears little resemblance to its predecessor.

Boeing Details Tanker Capabilities at US Air Force Association Conference
WASHINGTON, Sept. 14, 2009 – Boeing [NYSE: BA] today unveiled
additional details of the company's potential offering in the U.S. Air
Force KC-X tanker competition, saying the KC-7A7 will offer maximum
capability at the lowest cost.
In a briefing at the Air Force Association's 2009 Air & Space
Conference and Technology Exposition outside Washington, Rick
Lemaster, Boeing KC-X director and program manager, said Boeing has
"been listening to our U.S. Air Force customer, and we appreciate

AGM-65 rose to prominence during Desert Storm, when many of TV's missile-eye views of air strikes came from Mavericks. España, y que permite la formación de pilotos comerciales.
Aguirre resaltó la importancia de este Centro de Simulación de
Vuelo que "va a convertir a la Comunidad en un punto de referencia

Israel Aerospace Industries' Heron is a large MALE UAV in the MQ-1 Predator's Class. It is primarily used as a surveillance UAV over land and sea, and can be equipped with a number of modular radar, sensor, and even electronic intelligence packages. The 2006 war in Lebanon also demonstrated that they could be armed, if necessary. Herons are known to serve with Israel (Heron 1 and Heron TP), India, Turkey, and in France as the SIDM/EAGLE EuroMALE variant. They have also been used successfully by US SOUTHCOM as drug interdiction aircraft; a leasing deal with El Salvador is reportedly pending, and Brazil is also showing interest.
Canada has a long-term JUSTAS program that includes UAVs in this class, and the Heron will fill the Phase 1 near-term MALE UAV requirements – but the longer-term procurement choices will not be made until Phase 2. Meanwhile, the Heron UAV have begun serving Canada in Afghanistan, under an August 2008 arrangement. Now Australia has joined this effort… (more…)

In 2005, "Lockheed Receives $76.6M for MH-60S' New Airborne Anti-Mine Systems" covered several recent advances in US mine detection technologies, including a new AQS-20A mine detecting sonar array, and airborne laser systems mounted to MH-60S helicopters. All of this is in the service of the USA's new naval emphasis on littoral warfare and accompanying doctrinal changes. So, what's the AN/AQS-20? And how is it also related to a new US ship class, not to mention a new undersea robot?
