Airbus Military inaugura su nuevo Centro de Instrucción en Sevilla / The new Airbus Military Training Centre has been opened today in Seville (Spain).

The facility is among the most modern in the world with space for six full-flight simulators and a range of other computer-based training devices. It will house Airbus Military’s training provision for the A400M new-generation airlifter as well as its family of light and medium aircraft and military derivatives of commercial models.

Two full-flight simulators, one for the C295 and one for the CN235, which faithfully replicate the experience of flying a real aircraft, have already been installed.

An A400M simulator will be installed prior to the planned entry into service of the aircraft in 2012. All the simulators are capable of representing the full range of operations including specialised activities such as flight with night vision goggles, rough field take-offs and landings, and air-dropping of loads or paratroopers.

A range of other devices for training on specific aircraft systems, including the Fully Integrated Tactical System (FITS) at the heart of Airbus Military’s surveillance aircraft, and in the classroom or over an intranet are also provided. Further devices are dedicated to training engineers and technicians in the maintenance and support of the aircraft.

The new centre has a staff of some 100, of which 40 are new positions, and is expected to train around 1,000 students per year. The two-storey building covers 13,000m2 and is built in the Andalusian style with environmentally friendly internal patios providing natural light and ventilation to most rooms.

Udvar-Hazy: Very little 'bottom-line benefit' from narrowbody re-engining

Air Lease Corp. Chairman and CEO Steven Udvar-Hazy said this week
"When I look at all issues and all complexities, it's hard to see a meaningful benefit to the industry [from a narrowbody re-engining] other than in terms of the environment and noise emissions. There I see some PR benefit to the outside world, but in terms of bottom-line benefit to owners of the aircraft, to operators of aircraft, it's a very slim margin."

Sukhoi Superjet 100 has successfully passed noise testing program

October 12, Turin - Under supervision of AR IAC and EASA, the SSJ 100 has successfully passed noise testing program performed as a part of the overall certification campaign. At the Cuneo-Levaldigi airport the aircraft made 8 certification flights. The preliminary results show that the aircraft noise levels show full compliance with ICAO CAEPIV requirements.

Being now cleared by AR IAC and EASA, the same aircraft #95004 is undergoing HIRF testing, in the same premises. HIRF testing methodology was elaborated by the SCAC engineering team in collaboration with Alenia Aeronautica, a Finmeccanica Company, and relevant certification authorities.

HIRF certification is required to demonstrate that the aircraft electric and electronic equipments are not influenced by external electromagnetic fields like those produced by a TV or radio station or by a radar. HIRF testing technique consists in radiating the aircraft with radio waves whose frequencies and levels of emission are set by Certification rules. The aircraft can be electrically powered or unpowered, and engines can also run. The electromagnetic fields and currents on cables inside the aircraft are measured during radiation and avionic equipments are kept under control to check for any malfunction. Telemetry is used to monitor aircraft parameters in real time as well as to avoid people exposure to radiation during tests with powered aircraft.

“Sukhoi Superjet 100 is the first aircraft in Russia that has compliance with international noise standards proven in flight under supervision of Russian and European certification authorities. It’s a real milestone of the SSJ 100 Program which confirms good perspective for the aircraft worldwide sales”, - said Igor Vinogradov, SCAC’s SVP on Certification, commenting the finalization of the noise testing program

Sukhoi completed general units’ assembly of the first production Su-35S

Moscow, October 11. Sukhoi Company completed general units’ assembly of the first production Su-35S fighter. The state contract with the Russian Defense Ministry on the delivery of 48 multifunctional super maneuverable Su-35 fighter jets was signed at the 2009 MAKS air show. The works on the contract started in autumn 2009 at the KnAAPO facility of the Sukhoi holding in Komsomolsk-on-Amur.

At the present time the first production Su-35S is at the final assembly shop of the KnAAPO. The preparations are underway for its flight testing. The first production Su-35S will be delivered to the Russian Ministry of Defense by the end of the year.

Su-35 is also intended for export sales. Sukhoi is holding talks with customers in South-East Asia, the Middle East and South America anxious to re-arm their air forces on Su-35 sales.

The Su-35 is a thoroughly upgraded super-maneuverable fighter of the 4++ generation. It employs technologies of the fifth generation that assure its superiority over similar class fighters. The special features of the aircraft include a new avionics suite based on digital information control system integrating onboard systems, a new radar with a phased antenna array having a long aerial target detection range with an increased number of simultaneously tracked and engaged targets (30 aerial targets tracked and 8 engaged plus the tracking of 4 and engagement of 2 ground targets), and new enhanced vectored thrust engines. The Su-35 has a diverse suite of long-, medium- and short-range weapons. It can carry guided aerial munitions for anti-radar and anti-ship actions as well as general purpose munitions, and guided and unguided aerial bombs. The radar signature of the fighter has been reduced by several times as compared to that of the fourth-generation aircraft by coating the cockpit with electro-conducting compounds, applying radio absorption coats and reducing the number of protruding sensors. The service life of the aircraft is 6,000 hours flight hours; the life cycle is 30 years of operation. The assigned service life of vectored thrust engines is 4,000 hours.

Sikorsky Innovations Completes Testing of Hub Mounted Vibration System

Sikorsky Innovations, the technology development organization of Sikorsky Aircraft, has completed rig testing of a Hub Mounted Vibration Suppression system (HMVS), designed to eliminate vibration and deliver a smoother helicopter ride. The effort is jointly funded by Sikorsky and the Aviation Applied Technology Directorate (AATD). Sikorsky Aircraft is a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

“HMVS represents a significant improvement in the control of vibration at its source with less weight than conventional vibration treatments,” said Jim Kagdis, program manager for Sikorsky Advanced Programs. “Combined with our active flap technology, this makes the opportunity for a ‘jet-smooth’ ride a practical reality. Our plan is to install and test flight this vital technology on a Sikorsky helicopter in the next 12 months. We expect to drive this technology into all our products once its commercialization is complete.”
“Vibration, even at the low levels Sikorsky has been able to achieve, takes a toll on crew and passengers as well as the aircraft,” said Mark Miller, Vice President, Research & Engineering. “With the HMVS breakthrough technology, occupants will experience less fatigue and enhanced safety. In addition, operating costs will decrease because equipment will last longer in a virtually zero-vibration environment.”
The key development team member for the project is the LORD Corporation of Cary, North Carolina.

http://www.expansion.com/2010/10/13/empresas/interiores/1286920930.html

Bell Helicopter AH-1Z Earns Navy Recommendation for full Fleet Introduction

FORT WORTH, TEXAS (October 4, 2010) - Bell Helicopter, a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company, announced today that the U.S. Marine Corps' newest attack helicopter, the AH-1Z Cobra successfully completed Operational Evaluation (OPEVAL).

On Sept. 24, the Navy's Aviation program office (NAVAIR) for H-1 Upgrades received official notification from the Navy's Commander Operational Test and Evaluation Force that its AH-1Z helicopters were found to be "operationally effective and suitable" and were recommended for fleet introduction.

"We are pleased and proud that the AH-1Z has completed its operational evaluation," said John Garrison, president of Bell Helicopter. "The AH-1Z is a remarkable aircraft that is only made stronger by the Marine aviators that fly them. We are excited that our warfighters will receive the full benefit of this awesome machine."

The Marine Corps is replacing the two-bladed AH-1W with the AH-1Z, which features a new, four-bladed composite rotor system, performance-matched transmission, four-bladed tail rotor, upgraded landing gear and a fully integrated glass cockpit.

A total of 189 new and remanufactured AH-1Z helicopters are anticipated, with deliveries expected to be complete by the end of 2019.

The AH-1Z Cobra helicopters are part of the U.S. Marine Corps H-1 Upgrade Program. The program's goal is to replace AH-1W helicopters with new and remanufactured AH-1Zs which provide significantly greater performance, supportability and growth potential over their predecessors.

The H-1 Upgrade Program offers 84 percent commonality of parts between the AH-1Z and UH-1Y utility helicopters. This commonality reduces lifecycle and training costs and decreases the expeditionary logistics footprint for both aircraft.

VSS Enterprise Completes First Manned Glide Flight [press release + photo + video]

VIRGIN GALACTIC'S SPACESHIPTWO ACHIEVES MAJOR MILESTONE IN ITS PROGRAM TO BECOME WORLD'S FIRST MANNED COMMERCIAL SPACE VEHICLE.

VSS Enterprise achieves manned free flight from over 45,000 ft (13,700 metres) and successfully glides to land at Mojave Air and Spaceport.

10th October 2010, Mojave, CA. Virgin Galactic, the US company developing the world’s first commercial manned space flight system and tourism business, is delighted to announce the successful completion today of the first piloted free flight of SpaceShipTwo, named the VSS Enterprise. The spaceship was released from its mothership at an altitude of 45,000 ft
(13,700 metres).

During its first flight the spaceship was piloted by Pete Siebold, assisted by Mike Alsbury as co-pilot. The two main goals of the flight were to carry out a clean release of the spaceship from its mothership and for the pilots to free fly and glide back and land at Mojave Air and Space Port in California.

Other detailed objectives of the flight were successfully completed, including; verification that all systems worked prior and following the clean release of Enterprise; initial evaluation of handling and stall characteristics; qualitative evaluation of stability and control of SS2 against predictions from design and simulation work; verification of performance by evaluating the lift-to-drag ratio of the spaceship during glide flight; practice a landing approach at altitude and finally descend and land.

Preparations for the milestone flight were extensive. The WhiteKnightTwo mothership (Eve) flew 40 times including 4 captive carry flights of spaceship and mothership mated together. The most recent captive carry was on Sept 30th. The most recent solo flight was on October 5th and demonstrated that all the systems required for a free flight by the VSS Enterprise were functioning correctly without any safety issues. Commenting on the successful flight Scaled Composites pilot, Pete Siebold, said “The VSS Enterprise was a real joy to fly, especially when one considers the fact that the vehicle has been designed not only to be a Mach 3.5 spaceship capable of going into space but also one of the worlds highest altitude gliders.”

Sir Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Group, who was present during the first successful flight, added “This was one of the most exciting days in the whole history of Virgin. For the first time since we seriously began the project in 2004, I watched the world’s first manned commercial spaceship landing on the runway at Mojave Air and Space Port and it was a great moment. Now, the sky is no longer the limit and we will begin the process of pushing beyond to the final frontier of space itself over the next year.”

Virgin Galactic is now well on the way to becoming the world’s first commercial space line with 370 customer deposits totalling $50 million. Future commercial operations will be at Spaceport America in New Mexico where final preparations are taking place for a finished runway inauguration ceremony on Friday 22nd October 2010. National Geographic channel in the United States will be showing a documentary on the build up and preparation for the first flight of VSS Enterprise on Monday, 18 October at 10.00pm ET/PT.

George Whitesides, CEO of Virgin Galactic who was also present at the historic flight, added “To see the world’s first manned commercial spaceship landing on a runway is a sight I always dreamed I would behold. Now, our challenge going forward will be to complete our experimental program, obtain our FAA licence and safely bring the system into service at Spaceport America, New Mexico.”

http://plandevuelo.es/wordpress/archives/501

Air Ambulance and Commercial Helicopter Operations, Part 91 Helicopter Operations,
and Part 135 Aircraft Operations; Safety Initiatives and Miscellaneous Amendments Full text [pdf]
SUMMARY: This proposed rule addresses air ambulance and commercial helicopter operations, part 91 helicopter operations, and load manifest requirements for all part 135 aircraft. From 2002 to 2008, there has been an increase in fatal helicopter air ambulance accidents. To address these safety concerns, the FAA is proposing to implement operational procedures and require additional equipment on board helicopter air ambulances. Many of these proposed requirements currently are found in agency guidance publications and would address National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) safety recommendations. Some of these safety concerns are not unique to the helicopter air ambulance industry and affect all commercial helicopter operations. Accordingly, the FAA also is proposing to amend regulations pertaining to all commercial helicopter operations conducted under part 135 to include equipment requirements, pilot training, and alternate airport weather minima. The changes are intended to provide certificate holders and pilots with additional tools and procedures that will aid in preventing accidents.

Sikorsky video of the Sep. 15, 2010 test flight during which its X2 Technology coaxial-rotor helicopter demonstrator achieved its 250kt speed goal. Conventional helicopters cruise at around 150kt. The X2 reached 260kt in a shallow dive as is expected to exceed 250kt in level flight once a sail fairing is fitted between the upper and lower rotors to reduce drag further.

X2 uses a single T800 engine to power both the rotors and the tail-mounted variable-pitch propeller, which provides forward thrust to enable the high speed. Other technologies include fly-by-wire flight controls and active vibration control. As the video opens you see a full-scale mockup of Sikorsky's proposed X2 Light Tactical Helicopter in the hangar.

The Future Of Airborne ISR May Really Be Hot Air (aerostats)

The future of airborne ISR may really be a lot of hot air. The first generation of a new type of unmanned platform is already being deployed. These new platforms are balloons, or more accurately aerostats. An aerostat is a tethered blimp that is filled with helium so it is lighter-than-air. Think of the old World War II barrage balloons. Except these are smart balloons with a sensor suite that can include electro-optical and infrared cameras, radar, sound and flash detectors and laser rangefinders/target designators. In addition, the ground control and intelligence center for each aerostat uses advanced computer software to do automated target recognition. The average aerostat carries a 200-500 pound payload and operates at between 1,000 and 2,500 feet. At the latter height it can find targets out to a distance of 200 kilometers. If unmolested, the aerostat can stay aloft for days.

Heavy-lifting balloons: A new type of balloon may make delivering people and provisions to inaccessible places easier

Heavy-transport helicopters, such as the Mil Mi-26 or Sikorsky S-64 Skycrane, address some of these difficulties, but their payloads are limited to 20 and nine tonnes, respectively, and the huge rotors create a powerful downdraft that makes handling that payload rather tricky.

The company is developing a piloted dirigible capable of carrying loads of up to 150 tonnes over distances as great as 2,000km (1,240 miles) at a speed of 45 knots (83kph). This would permit the craft to transport not just hefty components, but entire buildings, to remote areas. The company envisages modules ranging from rural hospitals and disaster-relief centres to luxury airborne cruise ships.

AAI Flies Aerosonde(R) Mark 4.7 Aircraft with Heavy Fuel Engine

A heavy fuel propulsion system is a critical capability for both U.S. and international armed services. Maritime forces like the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard benefit because kerosene-based fuels are less flammable than gasoline in shipboard environments. Services with both land- and air-based missions, such as the U.S. Army, can embrace a "one fuel forward" concept by transitioning to a single fuel for all of their assets, minimizing cost and logistics.

Sukhoi begins flight trials of modernized Su-33 fighters

Moscow, October 5. Sukhoi aircraft holding has begun ground and flight trials of the modernized fourth generation Su-33 naval fighter.

Modernization works and trials are being carried out at the KnAAPO aircraft plant in Komsomolsk-on-Amur under a state defense order in 2010.

Su-33 (Su-27K) is a multi-role carrier-based fighter with horizontal takeoff and landing, and aerial refuelling capability. The fighter features folding wings and horizontal tail for hanger storage. It was designed to defend naval ships from airborne attacks.

Production of the first two prototypes of the warplane was completed in 1986-87.

The first flight of the Su-27K prototype by the design bureau's test pilot V.G. Pugachov on August 17, 1987. In the course of the plane's flight development tests, on November 1, 1989, he performed the USSR’s first conventional (non-V/STOL) landing on the deck of the USSR Admiral of the Fleet Kuznetsov aircraft carrier. In 1989, the Komsomolsk-on-Amur plant started production of a Su-27K development batch, the first production plane being flight-tested at the plant in February 1990. Official testing of the Su-27K took place in 1991-1994.

In April 1993, the KnAAPO plant delivered the first ship-based fighters to the pilots of the aviation wing of the Russian Northern Fleet to be put into service at the 279th ship-based fighter aircraft regiment (SFAR). By August 1994, the regiment had received as many as 24 production aircraft. In 1993-95, combat pilots of the 279th SFAR gained experience on the aircraft; following that, between December 1995 and March 1996, the USSR Admiral of the Fleet Kuznetsov aircraft carrier put to sea for its maiden long-distance training voyage. The 31st August 1998 decree of the President of the Russian Federation put the Su-27K into service under the name of the Su-33.

First aircraft to be delivered shortly

Airbus Military has obtained certification for the A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport from Spanish military certification authority Instituto Nacional de Tecnología Aerospacial (INTA). This paves the way for first delivery of the aircraft to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in the coming weeks. The A330 MRTT is now the only certified new-generation tanker and transport being offered to the world’s air forces.

The military certificate was presented by INTA Director for Testing and Certification Bartolomé Marqués to Airbus Military, SVP Head of Engineering and Technology, Miguel Angel Morell on 5th October in Madrid. It covers the design and operation of all the military systems added to the aircraft in addition to the basic civil design, and especially the hose and drogue, as well as the all-new Airbus Military designed Aerial Refuelling Boom System (ARBS).

This approval follows the civil Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for the conversion from the basic passenger A330-200 awarded by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) earlier in the year.

Airbus Military Managing Director Domingo Ureña said: “I would like to thank all and everyone who has worked hard on achieving this certification. This is an enormously gratifying moment for all. It confirms the A330 MRTT has satisfactorily demonstrated its global military airworthiness and the maturity of all its systems, and its full readiness to enter service with its customers. The combination of the proven A330 airframe with the most advanced, and now certified, refuelling systems in the world, including our ARBS, will transform the conduct of aerial refuelling operations, while also providing full transport capability.”

Airbus Military conducted more than 280 A330 MRTT flights and nearly 170 more on an A310 demonstrator to obtain the certification, and performed nearly 1,600 wet and dry contacts with receiver aircraft. Additionally more than 600 contacts were made with the A330 MRTT acting as receiver. Altogether more than one million pounds (450 tonnes) of fuel were transferred. Aircraft to which the A330 MRTT has now transferred fuel include F-16 and F-18 fighters, the E-3 AWACS with its large radome, and another A330 MRTT in a process known as buddy-buddy refuelling.

Airbus Military will deliver two MRTTs to the RAAF before the end of the year. The aircraft, equipped with two underwing hose-and-drogue refuelling pods and the Aerial Refuelling Boom System (ARBS), will be operated by 33 Squadron at RAAF Amberley. They can also carry 270 passengers in a two-class configuration.

A total of 28 A330 MRTTs have been ordered by the Air forces of four nations (Australia, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom).

Going where the four winds blow with the mobile wind turbine concept

Despite numerous refinements and improvements to the technology used to harness the power of the wind, windmills of old share an obvious characteristic with their gigantic modern counterparts. They're static. A network of designers coming together under the banner of Pope Designs has come up with a mobile wind turbine concept that could just change all that. Able to generate and store enough power to meet its own needs, the turbine could also be erected anywhere the wind blows to provide a source of clean energy to those who need it.

GAO Denies US Aerospace KC-X Protest

The GAO today issued a decision rejecting claims from U.S. Aerospace, the would-be bidder for the Air Force's KC-135 replacement contract that was ejected from the competition due to a tardy bid.

This decision could close the curtain on a sideshow taking place as the Air Force attempts for the third time to conduct a $35 billion KC-X competition fairly. Had the protest yielded an adverse decision for the Air Force, the service's acquisition corps could once again have been turned on its head, setting back a bevy of procurements for years to come. The Air Force released a statement saying it is "satisfied" by the finding. Source selection between Boeing and EADS designs continues and a winner could be announced as soon as the end of next month.

DIGEST

1. Agency reasonably concluded that protester's proposal was received after the established closing time where agency's conclusion is supported by contemporaneous email from protester's representative and telephone records, and protester's messenger did not dispute the stated time of receipt at the time the proposal was submitted.

2. The delay accompanying admission of protester's messenger to a secure military facility, and the alleged misdirection by the facility's entry gate guards, were not the paramount cause of protester's late submission of its proposal where protester's messenger did not attempt to enter the facility at the gate designated for entry of non-military visitors, did not seek advance entry approval, and failed to determine the location of, and directions to, the building designated for proposal submission.

3. Protester's proposal was not under government control prior to the time set for receipt of proposals where protester's messenger did not relinquish physical custody of the proposal until after the proposal submission deadline.

DECISION

U.S. Aerospace, Inc. (USAI), of Santa Fe Springs, California, protests the Department of the Air Force's rejection of the proposal USAI submitted in response to request for proposals (RFP) No. FA8625‑10-R-6600 for the KC-X tanker modernization program.[1] The agency rejected USAI's proposal on the basis that it was not received by the submission deadline. USAI's protest challenges the agency's rejection of the proposal on various bases, including an assertion that delivery of the proposal was "intentionally delayed" by Air Force personnel. Protest at 3. As discussed below, we previously dismissed the portion of USAI's protest alleging intentional agency misconduct; our decision today denies the remaining protest allegations.

First CF6-powered C-5M Delivered to United States Air Force

--EVENDALE, OH -- The first production Lockheed Martin C-5M Super Galaxy aircraft, powered by four CF6-80C2 engines, was delivered to the United States Air Force Friday in ceremonies attended by officials from Air Mobility Command, Air Force Material Command and Dover Air Force Base, Delaware.

"The CF6 plays a vital part in making the C-5M a Super Galaxy," said Lorraine Martin, Lockheed Martin C-5 Program vice president. "These engines power the C-5M to new standards in strategic airlift and, most importantly, provide critical support to the warfighter, in less time and more reliably."

The upgraded C-5M incorporates more than 70 changes and upgrades, including newer, quieter CF6 engines that deliver a 22 percent increase in thrust, 58 percent faster climb rate and enable more cargo to be carried across longer distances. For perspective, the C-5M with 50,000 pounds of fuel needs only 1,500 feet of runway to get airborne while the legacy C-5 required between 3,000-4,000 feet. The C-5M with 600,000 lb. payload can climb to 34,000 feet in 18 minutes while the legacy C-5s required 33 minutes to reach 25,000 feet. The CF6-powered C-5M Super Galaxy claimed 42 world aeronautical records in 2009, including significant time-to-climb and payload marks.

In addition to performance and reliability improvements, the CF6 adds a whole new level of efficiency to the C-5M. The engines provide emission margins well below the Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection standards. Over the life of the 52 C-5M aircraft program, CF6 engines save more than one million tons of carbon dioxide and over 90 million gallons of fuel compared to the current TF39-powered C-5 fleet.

CF6 engines also produce dramatically reduced noise levels over local communities where C-5s operate. At takeoff, the C-5M is more than three times quieter than the C-5A/B. The C-5M is the first and only military aircraft to achieve Stage 4 noise compliance, enabling continued access to airfields in noise sensitive communities throughout the world.

"We are pleased to play a prominent role in helping the C-5M write a new chapter in rapid global response," said Jean Lydon-Rodgers, vice president and general manager of GE Aviation Military Systems Operation. "The CF6 will help unlock the capability of the C-5 aircraft and allow cost effective operation for another 40 years."

GE's CF6 engines have been among the most utilized and reliable in the industry. Powering more than 20 models of wide-body aircraft, the engine family has established an unsurpassed record of reliability and compiled more than 350 million flight-hours in service with more than 250 customers worldwide.

GE Aviation, an operating unit of General Electric Company (NYSE: GE), is a world-leading provider of commercial and military jet engines and components as well as integrated digital, electric power, and mechanical systems for aircraft. GE Aviation also has a global service network to support these offerings.

Boeing 787 Dreamliner ZA006 Has Successful Take Off & Flight But Lands Early

Boeing tells Aubrey Cohen with the Seattle PI that the flight was cut short due to a “maintenance issue,” but they are still counting it as a success. “The air crew experienced a maintenance issue during flight and as a precautionary note decided to land at Boeing Field,” Boeing 787 spokeswoman Yvonne Leach said

Boeing Press Release

EVERETT, Wash., Oct. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The final Boeing (NYSE: BA) 787 Dreamliner to join the flight test fleet made its first flight today from Paine Field in Everett, Wash. The airplane, ZA006, is the second 787 equipped with General Electric GEnx engines to fly.

Captains Christine Walsh and Bill Roberson were at the controls during the 1 hour and 4 minute flight. The airplane landed at Boeing Field at 12:45 p.m. (Pacific time).

"It's great to have our last flight test airplane join the fleet," said Scott Fancher, vice president and general manager of the 787 program. "We have been focused on completing the testing required for certification of the 787 with Rolls-Royce engines, because that is the first model we deliver. A great deal of the testing that we've done also applies to the 787s with GE engines and won't need to be repeated," said Fancher.

There is, however, a smaller portion of testing that is unique to the engine/airframe combination. In general, this portion includes noise testing, extreme weather operations, function and reliability, and extended operations. In addition, testing to verify the airplane handles the same regardless of engine type and that the systems work on both models is required.

Some additional flight tests will be performed on one of the production airplanes, the ninth 787 to be built, but it is not considered a full-time member of the flight test fleet.

787 Testing Progress Report

In addition to achieving first flight of ZA006, the Boeing test team has completed a number of flight test milestones in recent weeks.

Boeing wrapped up a series of natural and artificial icing tests, meeting all requirements with no changes required. Pilots reported that the airplane continues to handle well even in the presence of ice.

Flight loads survey testing, which demonstrates the pressure distribution on the airplane structure throughout the phases of flight in a variety of configurations, also has been completed. The team conducted this testing on ZA004 primarily at the airport at Victorville, Calif. Analysis of this testing continues.

A dramatic series of tests that stress the airplane's brakes, called maximum brake energy testing, was completed in late September at Edwards Air Force Base, also in California. ZA001 conducted this testing as well as a series of extreme takeoff and landing conditions including minimum takeoff speed testing. Earlier in the month, ZA001 completed wet runway testing at Roswell, NM.

ZA003 flew to Glasgow, Mont., to complete community noise testing. All results were within expectations.

As a result of these tests and others, all takeoff performance and handling characteristics testing is complete for the initial version of the 787. Additional testing will be required for 787s equipped with GE engines.

The 787 flight test program has logged more than 1,900 hours over 620 flights and completed more than 65 percent of the flight test conditions for 787s with Rolls-Royce engines.

Equally important to the testing required in the air is the ground testing required to certify a new airplane. Boeing has completed well over 4,000 hours of ground testing on the same airplanes that are in the flight test program.

In addition, fatigue testing has started at a test rig in Everett. Fifteen flights have been simulated. Federal regulations require Boeing to conduct twice as many flight cycles as any airplane in revenue service. Boeing plans to have completed 10,000 flight cycles prior to first delivery.

"We continue to be extremely satisfied with the performance of the 787 in its testing operations," said Fancher. "This airplane handles wonderfully and will be a valuable tool for our customers."
