Pratt & Whitney F117 Engine Exceeds 8 Million Flight Hours

AERO INDIA, BANGALORE, INDIA, Feb. 8, 2011 - Pratt & Whitney’s F117 engine, the exclusive power for the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III airlifter, recently exceeded 8 million engine flight hours. At the same time, the C-17 exceeded 2 million flight hours, while supporting a U.S. Air Force mission, and airdropped 74,000 pounds of supplies in support of U.S. and allied troops. Pratt & Whitney is a United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX) company.

Since 2006, Pratt & Whitney’s F117 engines have accumulated more than 4 million flight hours in support of military and humanitarian missions around the globe. To put this in perspective, it took 13 years of operational service for the engine to reach the first 4 million flight-hour milestone. This statistic reflects the C-17's increased workload over the past several years.

The C-17 Globemaster III – the world’s premier heavy airlifter – is operated by four F117 engines. The F117-PW-100 first entered service in 1993 and is a derivative of Pratt & Whitney’s PW2037 commercial engine powering the Boeing 757. With more than 8 million hours of proven military service and 45 million hours in commercial use, the F117/PW2037 has consistently proven itself as a world-class dependable engine. Pratt & Whitney’s ongoing investment in product improvements has enabled the engine to continuously surpass established goals for time on wing, in-flight shut downs and support turnaround time.

Pratt & Whitney has delivered more than 1,050 F117 engines worldwide, including 82 with international customers. Other customers include the United Kingdom’s Royal Air Force, the Qatar Emiri Air Force, the Canadian Air Force, the Royal Australian Air Force, the 12-member Strategic Airlift Capability initiative of NATO and Partnership for Peace nations, and the United Arab Emirates Air Force and Air Defence.

Tecnam anuncia: RECORD DE ENTREGAS EN 2010

Tecnam ha anunciado hoy, que ha entregado en 2010, 265 aviones. This selection results from a comprehensive study to determine the optimum location for this latest production facility in Eurocopter's international industrial network, with the choice based on Querétaro's economic, geographic, educational and strategic position. Nanotechnology could pave the way for hydrogen fuels

  • EADS and Scottish scientists are working on new storage tanks for hydrogen
  • Use of hydrogen in aircraft and car engines would deliver huge benefits to the environment
  • If successful, EADS plans to fly an unmanned hydrogen-powered test plane in 2014

EADS Innovation Works, the Group's corporate research arm, is working with university researchers to find a new solid state storage system for hydrogen. This technology would make it possible to use hydrogen as a clean alternative to traditional hydrocarbon-based fuels in aeroplane and car engines.

Hydrogen is a clean fuel which produces only water on combustion or when combined with oxygen in a fuel cell to produce electrical power. However, it can be expensive and difficult to store safely. In addition, to store hydrogen as a gas demands high volumes, while to store as a liquid increases weight and the energy requirement (to compress it).

Storage of hydrogen in a solid is, therefore, very attractive but minimising weight and volume of the store is challenging and the rate of transfer from the tank to a fuel cell or engine is often slow. These barriers are currently holding back the use of hydrogen on an industrial scale in fuel cells to provide power for aeroplanes and road vehicles.

Chemists at the University of Glasgow are working with EADS by using nanotechnology to alter the design and material composition of a storage tank with the aim of making it so efficient that it will be feasible to use solid state hydrogen on an industrial scale for aeroplanes and cars.

If the developments to the tank structure are successful, EADS is planning to fly an un-manned hydrogen-powered test plane in 2014 with a longer term view of introducing commercial aeroplanes powered by hydrogen.

"Replacing traditional hydrocarbon-based fuels with pollution-free hydrogen in aeroplane and car engines would deliver huge benefits to the environment because carbon emissions would be dramatically reduced" said Dr.-Ing. Agata Godula-Jopek, Fuel Cells Expert in the EADS Power Generation Team, which is coordinating the programme for the company.

Duncan Gregory, Professor of Inorganic Materials at the School of Chemistry at the University of Glasgow, is leading the research. He is using nanotechnology to alter the structure of the Hydrisafe Tank, which is a new design under development by Hydrogen Horizons, a Scottish-registered start-up company.

The University and EADS IW have secured funding from the Materials Knowledge Transfer Network - part of the UK Technology Strategy Board - and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). This will allow a student to carry out a four year PhD project, spending time at the University and the company's German offices in Ottobrunn.

The research will involve testing the Hydrisafe tank with alternative hydrogen storage materials. The tank currently uses the established and commercially available lanthanum nickel (LaNi¬5) storage alloy. The research will look into replacing LaNi¬5 with other hydride materials such as magnesium hydride (MgH2), which has been modified at the nanoscale to allow it to receive and release the hydrogen at an even faster rate.

Modifying the construction of the tank will extend its longevity, making it suitable to have a solid state hydrogen storage system that can feed a fuel cell at the required energy densities required on an aeroplane.

Professor Gregory said: "Using new active nanomaterials in combination with novel storage tank design principles presents a hugely exciting opportunity to address the considerable challenges of introducing hydrogen as a fuel for aviation. This collaboration between engineers and chemists and between industry and academia provides the pathway to achieve this"

EADS IW and Prof Gregory's team are seeking funding from the European Union to build a European-wide team of academic and industrial partners to examine the wider issues relating to using hydrogen on an industrial scale to power aeroplane and car engines.

There is a recognition that while there is a strong potential for the adoption of fuel cells into the portable fuel cells market, key barriers to delivering this are the safe, efficient and cost-effective storage of hydrogen. The research project, if approved, would explore how best to deliver a practical solid state hydrogen solution for portable and micro fuel cell systems.

[Airventure, Oskosh] eVenture 2011: $60,000 Electric Flight Prize



EAA has been an inspiration and resource over the past half century for the conception and development of countless aircraft designs and products. This year, AirVenture will feature a new level of innovation that manifests more new ideas and technology than have been seen in one place for decades.

The $60,000 Electric Flight Prize will highlight and showcase an amazing array of new powerplant and airframe designs, awarding cash prizes to the designers and pilots of electric aircraft.
The contest will be judged across four categories:


  • Endurance: A timed event to determine which aircraft can stay aloft for the longest time in standard configuration (i.e., without additional battery packs). The clock will start when the aircraft crosses a defined start line, and will end when the pilot taxies across a finish line (locations of start and finish lines will be confirmed at pilot briefing). Competitors will be expected to land with a 10% battery reserve, and anyone unable to taxi across the finish line will be disqualified. All takeoffs will establish aircraft in a racetrack pattern above Wittman Regional Airport at a constant altitude. (Flights are likely to be scheduled in early morning or evening of July 26-28)
  • Time to Climb: A timed event to determine how much time it takes to climb to 5,000' AGL. Dynon Avionics will provide measuring devices that can be carried by each aircraft to the appropriate altitude. The clock starts when the aircraft is waved off for takeoff. (Event to be held on Wednesday, July 27)
  • Maximum Speed: The event will establish an average speed based two passes (one to the north, one to the south) along runway 18/36 at a minimum altitude of 500' AGL. The passes must be flown at level altitude – diving to create an advantage will result in disqualification. (Event to be held prior to the afternoon air show on Thursday, July 28)
  • Innovation Evaluation: The judges - nominated representatives from AeroLEDs, Aircraft Spruce & Specialty, Dynon Avionics, and Wicks Aircraft Supply - will, by consensus, determine a first-, second- and third-place position to recognize the aircraft that, in their opinion, represent the most significant advancement in electric aircraft design, construction, technology and innovation. All aircraft that have completed at least one of the performance events will be eligible.

Las Plataformas Aéreas de Investigación han sido recientemente reconocidas como ICTS por el Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación, permitiendo así el acceso libre de los grupos de científicos a las mismas, así como la mejora y actualización de la Infraestructura.

El acceso libre de los grupos de investigación o investigadores individuales les permitirá la adquisición de nuevos conocimientos, la formación en las tecnologías de uso en las Plataformas ó la realización de trabajos de investigación.

La mejora y actualización de las Plataformas permitirá elevar la competitividad científica y tecnológica de la ICTS, tanto a nivel nacional como internacional.

El Congreso insta al Gobierno a ejecutar una reforma estructural del modelo aeroportuario

El Pleno del Congreso de los Diputados ha aprobado este martes, 8 de febrero, con 183 votos a favor, 148 en contra y 7 abstenciones, una moción a propuesta del Grupo ERC-IU-ICV y pactada con los grupos del PSOE y CIU, que insta al Gobierno a desarrollar una reforma estructural del modelo aeroportuario.

La Cámara baja pide así al Ejecutivo que lleve a cabo, a lo largo de 2011 y a través de la incorporación de la directiva 2009/12/CE relativa a tasas aeroportuarias en la Ley de Seguridad Aérea y los correspondientes Reales Decretos que desarrollan las previsiones del RDL 13/2010, una reforma estructural del modelo aeroportuario para incrementar la eficacia y eficiencia del sistema, mejorar su competitividad y asegurar el cumplimiento de las directrices europeas.

El texto aprobado insta al Gobierno a diseñar un nuevo modelo que prevea la participación efectiva de las comunidades autónomas y, en su caso, las administraciones locales y sectores económicos en la gestión del aeropuerto, así como una adecuación de la estructura patrimonial y de ingresos vinculados a la explotación del aeropuerto al nuevo régimen flexible y competitivo.

Con estos objetivos, la moción indica que el Gobierno establecerá mecanismos de participación de las administraciones territoriales y sectores económicos en los órganos de gestión aeroportuaria de forma que puedan defender con eficacia sus intereses.

Para ello, el Gobierno preverá la participación determinante de representantes de las Comunidades Autónomas, y en su caso las administraciones locales y sectores económicos en los Consejos de Administración de Sociedades de gestión individualizada de aeropuertos de alto volumen de tráfico y especial complejidad en la gestión. Dichos representantes serán nombrados por Aeropuertos Españoles SA a propuesta de las respectivas administraciones o sectores. Para el caso de los aeropuertos cuya gestión, además, sea objeto de concesión, como serán los casos de Barcelona y de Madrid, preverá igualmente la participación determinante de la Comunidad Autónoma y, en su caso, las administraciones locales en el Consejo de la sociedad filial responsable del seguimiento de la gestión de la concesión.

El texto reclama también al Gobierno que adecue el régimen de contraprestación de los servicios aeroportuarios a través de un sistema de precios privados respecto a todos los servicios que no tengan la consideración de prestaciones patrimoniales públicas (tales como la prestación pública por Salida de Pasajeros, por Carga, por Servicios de Estacionamiento o por Suministro de Combustibles).

Esta fijación de precios garantizará una libre competencia entre gestores aeroportuarios y su fijación se someterá al régimen de consulta, transparencia y no discriminación en materia de aprobación de precios aeroportuarios que se deriven de la transposición de la directiva de tasas aeroportuarias 2009/12/CE. Concretamente, establecerá un sistema de prestaciones patrimoniales públicas que permita a los gestores aeroportuarios una mayor capacidad de individualizar y singularizar la gestión para cada aeropuerto a partir de la capacidad que se le otorgará a los gestores para proponer descuentos, recargos y bonificaciones individualizadas para cada aeropuerto sobre las tarifas públicas. Igualmente, preverá que los aeropuertos que sean objeto de concesión dispongan de libertad tarifaria para establecer sus propias tarifas sin limitación, excepto la que se desprenda del arbitrio de la Autoridad Estatal de Supervisión que debe establecerse al efectuar la transposición de la directiva de tasas aeroportuarias 2009/12/CE.

Por último, el documento aprobado insta al Ejecutivo a actualizar los criterios de calificación de aeropuertos de interés general para contribuir al desarrollo y mejorar la viabilidad económica de los aeropuertos territoriales.

ASSIDIAN opens new Engineering Centre in Bengaluru (India)

Cassidian, the defence and security division of EADS, has opened a new Engineering Centre in Bengaluru, India. This is the first defence oriented engineering centre operated by a foreign company in India and therefore a landmark achievement towards Cassidian's strategic goal to establish a long-term partnership with India. During the Inauguration Ceremony, Dr. Stefan Zoller, CEO of Cassidian, stressed the special importance of the centre: "The Engineering Centre in Bengaluru is a perfect example of our commitment to increase our industrial footprint in this rapidly growing country and to create a wide range of opportunities for industrial cooperation."

The new centre is staffed almost entirely with highly qualified Indian engineers who have undergone extensive training in Europe. It is planned to increase the current number of 60 employees to more than 200 by the end of 2012. The major objective of the Engineering Centre is to leverage the vast pool of skilled engineers available in India to develop products fulfilling the specific requirements of the Indian customers and to provide consultancy and other services to the aerospace and defence companies in India. This will be accomplished by capitalizing on the leading-edge technologies, systems and products of Cassidian.

By integrating the new centre within Cassidian's global Engineering Organization, it will be enabled to participate in Indian as well as global programmes. The Engineering Centre will be at the forefront of Engineering and System Development, developing its core competencies in the areas of Radar Systems, Protection Systems, Avionic Systems, Engineering IT & 3D Visual Simulation, Aerostructure and Aerospace Modelling & Simulation. Bengaluru has long been known as the aerospace and defence hub of India. By establishing its Engineering Centre there, Cassidian is confident that the proximity to customers and users will facilitate a mutually beneficial relationship on both sides and thus strengthen Cassidian's future activities in India.

Airbus Military A400M begins cold weather trials in Sweden





Airbus Military's second A400M development aircraft - Grizzly 2 - visited Kiruna in northern Sweden for four days of cold weather trials at the beginning of February.

Airbus Military's second A400M development aircraft - Grizzly 2 - visited Kiruna in northern Sweden for four days of cold weather trials at the beginning of February. The team experienced temperatures down to -21ºC and successfully achieved all the planned test points during a programme that focused on the powerplants. The A400M was accompanied by an Airbus A340-300 carrying support equipment and the personnel team. These tests followed preliminary cold weather work in Hamburg last December and will be followed by further tests in more extreme temperatures at Kiruna and other locations this winter and next.

Brazilian Minister of Defence views first P-3 Orion modernised by Airbus Military




The first P-3 Orion aircraft modified by Airbus Military for the Brazilian Air Force was inspected today by Brazilian Minister of Defence, Nelson Jobim, during his official visit to Spain.

The aircraft is the first of a fleet of nine which will undergo a complete systems modernisation programme, including the installation of Airbus Military´s Fully Integrated Tactical System (FITS).

As well as FITS, the aircraft will benefit from a powerful new suite of mission sensors, communications systems, and upgraded cockpit avionics. The engines are being updated and, depending on the condition of each individual aircraft, the structures are being renovated to permit many more years of effective operation.

The Brazilian Air Force will use the aircraft for maritime patrol, anti-submarine warfare, and a range of civic missions including economic exclusion zone enforcement and search and rescue.

CASSIDIAN completes prototype test flights in Harrier modernisation programme



       * The Spanish Navy's Harrier AV8B aircraft went through a test flight programme at Cassidian Spain's facilities in San Pablo (Seville)
       * Handover to the Spanish Navy will take place on completion of the modification certification process
       * CASSIDIAN is the new name of EADS Defence & Security

The prototype aircraft in the Harrier Upgrade programme for the Spanish Navy has completed its test flight programme and is now at the Rota Naval Base facilities.

The programme to upgrade the configuration of the Navy's Harrier AV8B aircraft includes, among other modifications, the installation of the 408A engine and the implementation of improvements to the structure and avionics systems, as well as the incorporation of various Technical Directives and SDLM/AGE third level maintenance.

The rest of the aircraft covered by this contract is presently at the San Pablo facilities undergoing various stages of implementation of the modifications.

Enrique Barrientos, CEO of Cassidian Spain, comments: "Our most important objective is to meet our customer's needs. This is a milestone in the Harrier Upgrade programme and an example of our commitment to the Spanish Navy relating to the sustainment and operational support of its fixed-wing aircraft, as well as the development of new capabilities to enhance our service."

En esta nueva edición de IDEX 2011, que tendrá lugar en Abu Dabi (Emiratos Árabes Unidos) entre el 20 y el 24 de febrero, SENER tendrá por primer vez un stand propio en el que se podrán conocer algunos de sus principales proyectos en Defensa y Seguridad, entre ellos: el programa METEOR, un misil aire-aire de medio-largo alcance, en el que SENER actúa como autoridad de diseño y suministrador para MBDA-UK del FAS (Fin Actuation Subsystem) y como responsable de completar su desarrollo, de realizar su calificación y de fabricar todas las unidades de serie durante la fase de producción; el programa NSM, acrónimo de Naval Strike Missile, un nuevo misil tierra-mar desarrollado por la empresa noruega Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace AS (KDA) y que viene a sustituir a uno de los primeros y más exitosos misiles para la defensa de costa, denominado Penguin. En este programa SENER lleva a cabo la producción y suministro del Sistema de Actuación y Control del nuevo misil; el misil aire-aire de corto alcance IRIS-T AA, en el que SENER es la autoridad de diseño y el proveedor exclusivo de la sección de control, además de proveer asistencia y soporte en su integración en el avión EF-18 / C-15 del EdA; y el misil tierra – aire de corto alcance IRIS-T SL, donde la empresa es también autoridad de diseño y el proveedor exclusivo de la sección de control; el programa TAURUS KEPD 350, un misil de gran alcance desarrollado por la empresa TAURUS SYSTEMS GmbH (TSG), para el que SENER ha producido en serie varios centenares de unidades del FAS, y en el que es además contratista principal con las Fuerzas Aéreas Españolas en el programa de adquisición de misiles KEPD 350 para el F-18, lo que incluye la integración con el avión, el suministro de los misiles y del equipo soporte de tierra; y también SAGITARIO, un sistema HM SHORAD (High Mobility Short Range Air Defense), capaz de lanzar desde tierra misiles estándar AMRAAM e IRIS-T desde un vehículo lanzador integrado. First-of-its-Kind, Tailless Aircraft Moves Closer to Carrier Trials in 2013


EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif., Feb. 4, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Today, the Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC)-built U.S. Navy X-47B Unmanned Combat Air System Demonstration (UCAS-D) aircraft successfully completed its historic first flight at Edwards Air Force Base (AFB), Calif.

Conducted by a U.S. Navy/Northrop Grumman test team, the flight took off at 2:09 p.m. PST and lasted 29 minutes. This event marks a critical step in the program, moving the team forward to meet the demonstration objectives of a tailless fighter-sized unmanned aircraft to safely take off from and land on the deck of a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier.

"First flight represents the compilation of numerous tests to validate the airworthiness of the aircraft, and the robustness and reliability of the software that allows it to operate as an autonomous system and eventually have the ability to take-off and land aboard an aircraft carrier," said Capt. Jaime Engdahl, the Navy's UCAS-D program manager.

Northrop Grumman is the Navy's UCAS-D prime contractor and leader of the UCAS-D industry team.

"Designing a tailless, fighter-sized unmanned aircraft from a clean sheet is no small feat," said Janis Pamiljans, vice president and UCAS-D program manager for Northrop Grumman's Aerospace Systems sector. "Commitment, collaboration and uncompromising technical excellence among the Navy, Northrop Grumman and the UCAS-D team industry partners made today's flight a reality. We are indeed honored to have given wings to the Navy's vision for exploring unmanned carrier aviation."

Taking off under hazy skies, the X-47B climbed to an altitude of 5,000 feet, flew several racetrack-type patterns, and landed safely at 2:38 p.m. PST. The flight provided test data to verify and validate system software for guidance and navigation, and the aerodynamic control of the tailless design.

As with all test programs, first flight represents the culmination, verification and certification of pre-flight system data collected and analyzed by both the Navy and Northrop Grumman. Airframe proof load tests, propulsion system accelerated mission tests, software maturity and reliability simulations, full system taxi tests, and numerous other system test activities were all completed and certified prior to first flight.

The aircraft will remain at Edwards AFB for flight envelope expansion before transitioning to Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md., later this year. There, the system will undergo additional tests to validate its readiness to begin testing in the maritime and carrier environment. The UCAS-D program is preparing the X-47B for carrier trials in 2013.

The Navy awarded the UCAS-D prime contract to Northrop Grumman in August 2007. The six-year contract calls for the development of two X-47B fighter-sized aircraft. The program will demonstrate the first-ever carrier launches and recoveries by an autonomous, unmanned aircraft with a low-observable-relevant planform. Autonomous aerial refueling will also be performed after carrier integration and at-sea trials.

Airbus to increase A330 production rate to ten a month

Unprecedented demand for Airbus' best-selling long range aircraft family

Airbus has decided to raise the production rate for its A330 Family to ten aircraft a month from the second quarter of 2013.

Currently Airbus turns out eight A330 Family aircraft each month. This monthly rate will increase to nine in early 2012, before reaching rate ten in the second quarter of 2013.

"We are increasing the production rate for the A330 Family due to the strong market demand for the aircraft," said Tom Williams, Airbus' Executive Vice President Programmes. "In the long-range, mid-size category, the A330 is the right aircraft for airlines worldwide".

The A330 is not only a bestseller as a passenger airliner but also as a Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft, as a VIP aircraft and also as a freighter.

The A330 MRTT achieved civil and military certification in 2010. Currently five are flying with a further four undergoing conversion. Delivery of the first two aircraft to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) is in the final stages. It is planned to deliver five A330 MRTTs to three customers in the course of this year.

2010 has also seen five deliveries of the brand new freighter variant to three customers as a first step towards satisfying a market of some 400 new build mid-size freighters over the next 20 years.

The reliable and efficient A330 is one of the most widely used widebody aircraft in service today, with one taking off each minute every day. To date, Airbus has won over 1,100 orders for the different models of the aircraft. Some 750 A330s have already been delivered and the aircraft is currently flying with 90 operators worldwide in 50 countries.

Fourth Major Milestone Completed; Next Major Milestone is Hull Inflation

MELBOURNE, Fla., BETHPAGE, N.Y., and LONDON – Feb. 1, 2011 – Six months after signing the Long Endurance Multi-Intelligence Vehicle (LEMV) agreement with the U.S. Army to build three airships with 21-day persistent intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capability, Northrop Grumman's (NYSE:NOC) LEMV program team has completed its Critical Design Review (CDR). This is the fourth major milestone achieved by the program since contract award.

"The entire U.S. Army/Northrop Grumman LEMV industry team has done an outstanding job working through a very aggressive development schedule to achieve all of these important milestones. The CDR provided an in-depth review of the complete system design of the program giving us the opportunity to assess where we are in our development and air vehicle production. It went very well," said Alan Metzger, Northrop Grumman vice president and integrated program team leader of LEMV and airship programs. "The entire team has been collaborating and remains very focused on meeting our objective of delivering this powerful capability into the hands of our combat commanders as soon as possible."

Upon completion of the development ground and flight testing phase, we expect to transition to a government facility and conduct our final acceptance long endurance flight just before year's end. In early 2012, LEMV will participate in an Army Joint Military Utility Assessment in an operational environment," he added. "As you can imagine, it's a very aggressive schedule to deliver from concept-to-combat in this time period."

Under the June 2010 agreement, awarded by the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command, Northrop Grumman will design, develop and test a long-duration hybrid airship system all within an 18-month time period.

"The power of the LEMV system is that its persistent surveillance capability is built around Northrop Grumman's open architecture design, which provides plug-and-play payload capability to the warfighter and room for mission growth," Metzger said. "The system rapidly accommodates next-generation sensors as emerging field requirements dictate and will provide increased operational utility to battlefield commanders. Today, our system readily integrates into the Army's existing Universal Ground Control Station and Deployable Common Ground System command centers and ground troops in forward operating bases.

"Beyond the value of seamless interoperability, the LEMV system provides a high level of fuel efficiency to the user community—a crucial part of life cycle logistics and support in theatre.  While LEMV is longer than a football field and taller than a seven-story building, it utilizes approximately 3,500 gallons of fuel for the air vehicle to remain aloft for a 21-day period of service, that's approximately $11,000 at commercial prices," Metzger added.

BETHPAGE, N.Y., Feb. 3, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) -built E-2D Advanced Hawkeye, the U.S. Navy's newest airborne early warning and command and control aircraft, has landed on the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) and begun carrier suitability testing.


With 99 percent of radar testing complete, the purpose of this phase of testing is to assess the aircraft's effectiveness in an operational environment. While onboard the Truman, all aspects of aviation/ship integration will be addressed, including logistics, manpower and interoperability, as well as catapult and arrested landing structural tests.

The aircraft that made the first carrier landing is "Delta One," the first E-2D Advanced Hawkeye to roll off Northrop Grumman's manufacturing line in St. Augustine, Fla.

The new aircraft will be able to scan a larger area, detect smaller objects and process information more quickly than its predecessor. The aircrews will be able to accomplish these tasks through improved all-glass cockpits and tactical operator stations.

Boeing Marks a Milestone With Rollout of 1,000th 767



EVERETT, Wash., Feb. 2, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) marked a proud moment in the company's history today at a ceremonial rollout of the 1,000th 767 airplane. Hundreds of current employees, joined by Boeing retirees who worked on the first 767, gathered to celebrate the occasion at the Everett, Wash., factory.

"It was great to see so many people here today – the engineers, the technicians, the machinists – who have made the 767 the wonderful airplane it is," said Jim Albaugh, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. OHANNESBURG, Feb. 2, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) and Comair Limited today announced an order for eight Next-Generation 737-800s complete with the innovative new Boeing Sky Interior. Comair will use its new 737s to update the fleet of Comair's low-fare airline, kulula.com. The airplanes are valued at approximately $646 million at current list prices. The order previously was attributed to an unidentified customer on Boeing's orders and deliveries website.

Launched in 2001 as South Africa's first low-fare carrier, kulula.com currently operates an all-Boeing fleet of ten 737s, including three leased 737-800s. Comair also operates as a franchise partner of British Airways, with thirteen 737 airplanes flying domestically in South Africa and regionally in Southern Africa.

El DLR Deutsche Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (Centro Aeroespacial Alemán) es el centro de investigación para la aeronáutica y astronáutica de la República Federal de Alemania. Sus trabajos de desarrollo e investigación global en el campo de la aeronáutica, la astronáutica, la energía y el transporte están vinculados a la cooperación dentro y fuera de Alemania. Con carácter habitual, el DLR funciona como un centro de máxima seguridad ubicado en la localidad alemana de Oberpfaffenhofen, cuyo acceso sólo es posible a través de rigurosos controles de seguridad. Sin embargo, el Instituto acaba de organizar una jornada de puertas abiertas que, a pesar de la lluvia y el frío, atrajo a miles de personas que no quisieron perderse la oportunidad de ver en persona el centro de alta tecnología.

 

Uno de los centros de investigación que suscitó más interés fue el Instituto de Robótica y Mecanotrónica, dirigido por el profesor Gerhard Hirzinger, donde investigadores y técnicos trabajan mano a mano para desarrollar soluciones a diversas tareas que requieren de la sensibilidad táctil de las máquinas.

 

Por ejemplo, un guante que permite controlar con absoluta precisión las pinzas de un brazo robótico. En Oberpfaffenhofen ya se han desarrollado algunos avances en robots directamente controlables con precisión a través de nuestras propias ondas cerebrales. Y esto es sólo el principio, ya que cada vez son más los desarrollos logrados en este centro.

 

El profesor Hirzinger es un investigador innovador, que ha hecho realidad infinidad de proyectos de investigación que han facilitado el desarrollo de muchos productos y avances de excelente aplicación, no sólo en el espacio, sino también en la tierra.

 

No es de extrañar, por tanto, que la sala de los robots fuera una de las más visitadas por los asistentes, que también pudieron disfrutar de las enormes imágenes proyectadas gracias a la pantalla de 12,30 x 6,75 metros suspendida por encima de la cabeza de los asistentes y fácilmente visible desde cualquier ángulo de una sala repleta de público. Además de la tecnología robótica, la sala también incluye un simulador de vuelo para entrenar a los pilotos.

 

Para ello se utilizaron dos unidades Christie Roadster HD18K equipadas con unos filtros especiales de polarización, de cuyo montaje se ocupó la empresa TMP Mediagroup, bajo la dirección de Manfred Reich. Durante 14 días, cuatro técnicos se desplazaron hasta el centro para hacer realidad este excepcional sistema tridimensional. Así pues, en este simulador los pilotos aprenden a volar utilizando gafas 3D a aceleraciones de hasta 12G (nótese que un único 1G equivale a 9,81 metros por segundo al cuadrado).

 

Manfred Reich y su equipo han instalado en el centro de Oberpfaffenhofen un equipo de control individual que incorpora un sistema de audio 5.1, y un sistema de vídeo compatible con fuentes de ordenador convencionales. La propia TMP construyó ex profeso una nueva estación de trabajo tridimensional con transmisión vía satélite para recepción estéreo, manipulación de Blu-ray y todas las prestaciones técnicas actualmente disponibles en la producción en serie.

 

La proyección tridimensional se está realizando en estéreo pasivo con la ayuda de gafas polarizadas. Se decidió optar por el uso de este tipo de gafas ya que, a pesar del desperdicio que su uso supone, el coste resulta asumible. La proyección se realizó sobre una pantalla plateada adecuada para tales fines, previamente optimizada para estas proyecciones tridimensionales.

 

La empresa TMP Mediagroup lleva unos 15 años trabajando como suministrador de sistemas tridimensionales para la industria aeroespacial europea; aunque una proyección de estas dimensiones supuso un reto especial incluso para Manfred Reich, tal y como nos explica: «Para nosotros lo más complicado en Oberpfaffenhofen fue conseguir una iluminación uniforme en una pantalla de esas características y al mismo tiempo mantener una relación razonable entre los costes y el resultado. Trabajamos con un nivel de iluminación muy elevado en la sala, y aun así conseguimos hacer un trabajo razonablemente bueno gracias a que los proyectores utilizados con los simuladores son los adecuados».

 

Esto fue también el motivo que animó a Reich a elegir los proyectores de 3 chips DLP® y una potencia de 18.000 lúmenes ANSI: «Es muy sencillo. Christie es la empresa con más experiencia en tecnología de 3 chips DLP, y además dispone de la gama de dispositivos más amplia. Por último, se trata de una cuestión de calidad e imagen, y no hay duda de que una instalación 3D full HD con dispositivos de xenón de 3 chips DLP es la mejor elección».

 

Por un valor total de casi 200.000 euros, el Instituto de Robótica y Mecanotrónica del Centro Aeroespacial Alemán fue equipado con una unidad de proyección 3D de alta tecnología con la que el profesor Hirzinger se muestra totalmente encantado. Allí, un equipo de 200 personas hace frente todos los días a nuevos desafíos, se trate de simulaciones de vuelo o de otros nuevos avances. La jornada de puertas abiertas fue un cambio que gozó una excelente acogida y generó un enorme entusiasmo entre los jóvenes, que tuvieron la oportunidad de coger por primera vez el mando y tripular de forma más o menos segura la «aeronave» por el paisaje rural.

Sikorsky Delivers Its First Two S-92® Helicopters for Utility Operations in Afghanistan

COATESVILLE, Connecticut - Sikorsky Aircraft Corp., a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX), has delivered two S-92® helicopters to airlift services provider AAR CORP., for operations in Afghanistan. AAR will perform passenger and cargo lift missions on behalf of the United States Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM), a government agency that provides transportation for the Department of Defense.

Both aircraft are certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to simultaneously carry both passengers and cargo in the same cabin space.

“Deployment to Afghanistan is a tremendous opportunity for AAR and the U.S. Government to see what the multi-mission S-92 aircraft is capable of in some very challenging flight conditions at high altitude,” said Ed Beyer, vice president for Sikorsky Global Helicopters. “The unique interior configuration of these two aircraft also will give AAR greater mission flexibility to perform its utility and transport missions.”

The FAA certified an easily configurable interior with variable seating while carrying up to three 4 ft. sq.-sized cargo pallets secured to rings in the seat tracks and cabin walls to assure crashworthiness. For each pallet, Sikorsky developed a special fire containment cover to contain and suffocate flames, and added smoke detectors. To separate the passengers from cargo, Sikorsky designed a fabric partition, and added a fire extinguisher and Protective Breathing Equipment for passengers and crew.

AAR purchased the two S-92 aircraft following an October 2010 USTRANSCOM contract award valued at $450 million to provide up to five years of airlift service in Afghanistan. Both aircraft are expected to begin operations in Afghanistan during February 2011. AAR already operates 15 Sikorsky S-61N aircraft in various mission roles, including Afghanistan.

“We evaluated a number of alternatives before concluding that the Sikorsky S-92 helicopter was the best choice to meet the arduous demands of supporting tactical lift missions in remote and extremely harsh environments,” said Jeff Schloesser, president of AAR’s Airlift Group during an acceptance ceremony at Sikorsky Global Helicopter’s facility in Coatesville, Pa., where the aircraft are manufactured. “The selection came down to choosing the aircraft that best fulfills the requirements and enables us to offer reliability, responsiveness and the best long-term business case for the military.”

Sikorsky has delivered 129 S-92 helicopters since September 2004 to commercial customers in the oil and gas industry, search and rescue, VIP transport and utility sectors. During those six years, the worldwide S-92 aircraft fleet has accumulated 285,000 flight hours, a record for a commercial fleet of Sikorsky helicopters in a similar timeframe.

A military version of the S-92 airframe ─ the CH148 helicopter equipped for naval operations ─ is being designed and produced for the Canadian Government. Additionally, Sikorsky and Lockheed Martin have proposed a variant to the U.S. Navy for the next ‘Marine One’ helicopter fleet to transport the president of the United States. The standard S-92 aircraft includes a spacious cockpit with excellent exterior visibility, a stand-up cabin for up to 19 passengers, modern avionics with large NVG-compatible displays, a crashworthy fuel system separated from the passenger compartment, and a rear ramp for loading passengers or cargo.

The S-92 was certified to FAA/EASA harmonized Part 29 requirements, as amended through Amendment 47. The S-92 remains the only aircraft to have been certified to this rigorous airworthiness standard without exception or waiver.

Airbus: WTO RULING: BILLIONS IN BOEING SUBSIDIES DISTORT COMPETITION
Today’s World Trade Oganisation (WTO) decision confirms that Boeing has received massive and illegal government subsidies for many decades, and that they have had a significant and ongoing negative effect on European industry.

The final WTO-report to be publicly released in a few weeks can be expected to say:
1. Boeing would not have been able to launch the 787 without illegal subsidies.
2. Boeing has received at least $5 billion of US taxpayer dollars which has been determined illegal. Quantification of the additional subsides beyond this figure will take place in later stages of this dispute if Boeing chooses to pursue it.
3. An additional more than $2 billion in state and local subsidies that Boeing will receive in the future are illegal.
4. The effect of the subsidies is significantly larger than the face value of the subsidies in light of their particularly pervasive nature.
5. The pervasive subsidies have thoroughly distorted competition within the aviation industry, directly resulting in significant harm to the European aerospace industry.
6. The effect of these subsidies will continue in the future, putting Airbus at a significant disadvantage.

In concluding that Department of Defense (DoD) and NASA funding are illegal subsidies, the WTO decision will require fundamental changes to the US funding mechanisms.

The WTO decision will also confirm that Washington State and the City of Everett must stop subsidising Boeing. Unless stopped, these subsidies will increase annually through 2024.
The WTO can be expected to say that the billions in subsidies benefiting Boeing have a significantly greater distortive effect than the Reimbursable Loans to Airbus. Airbus estimates at least $45 billion as a realistic figure based on identified lost sales to Airbus as a result from the subsidies. Taking the cases together, the WTO will be seen to now have specifically green-lighted the continued use of loans in Europe and commanded Boeing to end its illegal R&D cash support from NASA, DoD and the US taxpayers.

“Airbus applauds the excellent result achieved by the European Commission and the Member States. From today, Boeing can no longer pretend that it doesn’t benefit from generous and illegal state subsidies. It has been doing so from the start and it’s time to stop the denial,” said Rainer Ohler, Airbus’ Head of Public Affairs and Communications. “We expect the WTO dispute to carry on for several more years and as in all trade conflicts, a resolution will only be reached through negotiations. The myth that Boeing doesn’t receive government aid is over and we hope this sets the tone for balanced and productive negotiations going forward.”

Boeing Response to Public Reports Regarding the WTO's Final Ruling in DS 353

CHICAGO, Jan. 31, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) today released the following statement, responding to public reports that the WTO panel deciding European Union claims of U.S. government assistance to Boeing has issued a confidential final ruling rejecting the vast majority of Europe's claims:

"Today's reports confirm the interim news from last September that the WTO rejected almost all of Europe's claims against the United States, including the vast majority of its R&D claims – except for some $2.6 billion. This represents a sweeping rejection of the EU's claims.
"Nothing in today's reports even begins to compare to the $20 billion in illegal subsidies that the WTO found last June that Airbus/EADS has received (comprised of $15 billion in launch aid, $2.2 billion in equity infusions, $1.7 billion in infrastructure, and roughly $1.5 billion in R&D support).

"The WTO's decisions confirm that European launch aid stands alone as a massive illegal subsidy only available to Airbus, which has seriously harmed Boeing, distorted competition in the aerospace industry for decades, and resulted in the loss of tens of thousands of good-paying U.S. jobs.

"Today's decision will not require any change in policy or practice, or other remedy that comes close to approaching the billions of dollars of launch aid that must be repaid by Airbus or restructured on proven commercial terms. As a result of the June WTO ruling, EU governments and Airbus/EADS must repay or restructure $4 billion in still outstanding illegal launch aid subsidies Airbus received to develop the A380. They must also remedy the adverse effects of the additional $16 billion in other illegal subsidies Airbus received.

"Under the WTO's decisions, Airbus must now compete in the global marketplace without the massive illegal subsidies it has received since its inception and without which, the WTO held, Airbus would be 'a much different, and we believe a much weaker' company than it is today. It will be required to finance airplanes the same way Boeing does – with its own money. Having recently announced it has more than $13 billion dollars of cash on hand, Airbus should have no problem with this new requirement.

"Today's ruling underscores our confidence in the WTO processes and dispute-resolution procedures. We applaud the body for its work and continue to look to Airbus/EADS and the EU to recognize that in today's global market, everyone must play by the rules and abide by WTO requirements. Playing by the rules, for Airbus/EADS, means withdrawing the still-outstanding A380 prohibited launch aid subsidy and financing the A350 on commercial terms. Airbus should confirm its intention to comply with the WTO's decisions."

Boeing Expands Training Capability in Europe

SEATTLE, Jan. 27, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) Training & Flight Services has signed a long-term agreement with Blue1 to provide 717 training capabilities in Stockholm, Sweden, beginning the first quarter of 2011. Blue1 is a Scandinavian Airlines' subsidiary based in Helsinki, Finland.
