NASA proposes Water Walls to replace mechanical life support systems

NASA proposes Water Walls to replace mechanical life support systems:
Lessons learned aboard the International Space Station have contributed to the development...
When they’re living aboard spacecraft, astronauts presently rely on mechanically-driven life support systems. Not only is there a danger of these systems breaking down, but maintenance can be challenging, as they’re always in use. While redundant duplicate systems could take over in such situations, they add to the expense and weight of a spacecraft, and also take up valuable space. Instead, NASA is exploring another possibility – the passive “Water Walls” system, which would use the principle of forward osmosis to perform tasks such as water filtration, air filtration, and even food growth... Safer, cleaner and lighter: DLR demonstrates developments for the aviation of tomorrow at ILA 2012

Artificial bird for bird strike test

Morphing Leading Edge

Microscopic holes in the outer skin of an aircraft, wings with elastically deforming leading edges and steep approach flights - these are just some of the innovations from the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) for the future of aviation, offering greater comfort and safety while simultaneously consuming less fuel and generating less noise. At the ILA Berlin Air Show 2012, from 11 to 16 September, DLR is presenting a total of 18 spectacular developments in modern aviation research, along with three aircraft and two helicopters from the largest civilian research fleet in Europe. A Quadrocopter-Parcours will tempt visitors to have a go at flying themselves.

Eco-efficient flight
An aircraft as elegant as a bird of prey, with wings extended forwards in the air: DLR has been researching this wing configuration in the LamAIR (Laminar Aircraft Research) project, which will lead to a significant reduction in air resistance and thus fuel consumption. In addition, under the same project, the researchers have developed a vertical stabiliser with a microperforated outer skin, within which a pump system sits. Turbulence is siphoned through these microscopic holes, creating uniform fuselage flow.

Lower flow resistance is also the goal in the development of the droop nose, a seamless, flexible wing leading edge that can be seen as a moving original part at the DLR stand (Hall 4, Stand 4301). DLR is also demonstrating the optimum combustion of alternative fuels for aviation based on gas (GtL, Gas to Liquid) and biomass (BtL, Biomass to Liquid), with two flames for comparison. DLR researchers are presenting compressor blades with flow-optimised edges for an engine that is more economical with regard to fuel consumption.

Another development towards aircraft with lower emissions is lightweight construction. DLR is working on stiffened panels made of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFP) that are used in load tests for the material. Another exhibit demonstrates the thermography developed by DLR as a new method for testing CFP materials in an automated manufacturing process.

Flight technology for greater comfort and safety
In the Multiple Swashplate System (META), DLR researchers have developed a new technology for controlling rotor blades individually. This limits rotor noise and vibration. DLR is presenting a fully mobile, functioning META demonstrator at ILA. In addition, a new cooling system for aircraft (Cooling Center) that is positioned centrally in the tail section is being demonstrated.

The newly-developed DLR propeller brake disk can get very hot. It is made of fibre-ceramics that can withstand high thermal loads. Aircraft propellers can be stopped more quickly after landing using this technology. This limits loading and unloading times. The search for the right material is also important in the development of an artificial bird. Tail sections, wing leading edges and engines have to withstand the risk of bird strike. The DLR artificial bird will be used in tests and the approval process of new aircraft components in the future.

Unmanned disaster relief
For the first time, DLR is demonstrating the small unmanned superARTIS research helicopter, used to develop demanding automated flight missions. superARTIS stands out because of its high payload capacity, range and flight speed.

DLR is also displaying images of a disaster operation in Cyprus, where DLR scientists investigated a heavily damaged power station using an unmanned octocopter and quadrocopter. A DLR_School_Labs Quadrocopter-Parcours invites visitors to the booth to have a go at controlling the unmanned aircraft themselves.

Air traffic efficiency
DLR researchers want to achieve greater environmental sustainability and less noise from air traffic using optimised flight paths. Modern satellite navigation systems will make future flight paths more flexible. An animation demonstrates potential, steeper, more oblique approach flights. Also based on satellite data is a new system for short-term weather forecasting for air traffic. The process developed at DLR can detect weather cells in real time every five minutes and make predictions of up to an hour.

Flawless air traffic control requires personnel with the right nerves - visitors can have a go at a few aerospace psychology selection tests at the DLR booth. Anyone fancy being a pilot or flight controller? In addition, a simplified version of the indoor navigation system used at airports - using a smartphone app and QR code - is being demonstrated, as is a software package that calculates the connection of an airport to the international air traffic network in real time.

DLR research fleet at the new ILA site

Part of the DLR research fleet will also be on display at ILA 2012. Five examples from the largest European fleet of civilian research aircraft and helicopters are set to impress visitors at the open-air grounds of the new exhibition area: the Antares DLR-H2 hydrogen power glider, the Falcon 20E, the Cessna 208B Grand Caravan 'flying auditorium' and the lightweight BO-105 multipurpose helicopter and EC-135 FHS flying helicopter simulator.

A particular highlight will be a visit by the A300 ZERO-G parabolic flight aircraft. A parabolic flight uses steep flight manoeuvres to achieve around 22 seconds of virtual weightlessness for experiments in weightlessness research.

The International Forum for Aviation Research (IFAR) is being hosted at the DLR booth in Hall 4. The Forum was founded in 2010 by initiative of DLR and, with 21 institutions involved at present, is the only network for aviation research organisations in the world.

All the exhibits with photographs and background information can be found on the DLR website dedicated to the ILA Berlin Air Show 2012.

Air travel of the future – aircraft with no leading-edge slats will be quieter and more environment-friendly

Every year, there is a six percent increase in the volume of air traffic. To make air travel more environment-friendly and quieter, researchers at the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR), together with partners Airbus, EADS Innovation Works and Cassidian Air Systems, have been carrying out research to reduce the aerodynamic drag of aircraft and have developed an alternative to the traditional leading-edge slat. A morphing leading edge is expected to replace slats to create an innovative high-lift system. This construction significantly reduces drag and noise during landing. Tests were carried out between 27 August and 7 September in one of Europe's largest wind tunnels at the Russian Central Aerohydrodynamics Institute’s (TsAGI) Zhukovsky research facility south of Moscow.

In the wind tunnel, the system's operation and performance were tested under realistic conditions. "The measurements on the droop nose here at TsAGI are just one example of the exceptional collaboration between DLR and TsAGI. We are looking forward to future cooperation," said Sergey L. Chernyshev, Executive Director of TsAGI. Normally, the flaps on the trailing edges of the wings and the slats located on the leading edges are extended during take-off and landing to provide the necessary lift at low speeds. There is a gap between the wings and the slats, through which air can flow from the underside of the wing to the top – generating noise. With the development of the smart droop nose, a morphing wing leading edge, the researchers have solved this problem. "The smart droop nose morphs itself during take-off and landing in such a way that no separate slats are necessary. The leading edge can be lowered by up to 20 degrees with virtually no loss of lift," explains DLR project leader Markus Kintscher from the DLR Institute of Composite Structures and Adaptive Systems in Braunschweig.

Uniting conflicting requirements

The researchers also want to minimise drag to reduce fuel consumption. To do this, the wing surfaces have been made as flat as possible to achieve laminar airflow. This reduces the air resistance by up to 12 percent. "The particular challenge in this project was to unite conflicting requirements," explains DLR Department Head Hans-Peter Monner. "On the one hand, the structure needs to be very elastic, to enable it to morph to the required shapes, but on the other it has to be very rigid. Ultimately, the leading edge must bear around one third of the weight of the aircraft during landing." A suitable material was required to ensure that the leading edge of the wing is not too heavy. During their experiments, the researchers concentrated on the glass- and carbon-fibre reinforced composites that are typically used in the aviation industry. A glass-fibre reinforced material turned out to be the most suitable for meeting the requirements.

In the concept of the droop nose, the skin on the front edge of the wing is just curved, not stretched. This stresses the material as little as possible. The scientists position individual layers one on top of the other, in such a way that the skin creates a structure that has a customised rigidity distribution. The leading edge morphs into the desired shape via integrated actuators and support elements along the wingspan, thus achieving very high stability. Soon, the new wing leading edge will be further developed to meet industrial requirements such as lightning protection, de-icing and the ability to withstand bird strikes.

Passengers looking out the window of a passenger plane will likely have noticed slats on the leading edge of the wing, along with the flaps on the trailing edge of the wing, being extended during takeoff and landing. These leading edge slats provide the lift necessary at low speeds, with the gap between the wing and the slats directing air from the underside of the wing to the top. Unfortunately, this gap also generates a lot of noise. A team of researchers has now developed a morphing leading edge that eliminates the gap and reduces noise and drag during landing... Scientists develop remote control system for cockroaches

Scientists develop remote control system for cockroaches:
One of the 'backpack'-equipped remote-control Madagascar hissing cockroaches
Much to the annoyance of home-owners everywhere, cockroaches are amazingly tough, and they’re able to squeeze into remarkably small spaces. These are some of the same qualities that researchers would like to see in tiny reconnaissance robots that could perform tasks such as searching earthquake-damaged buildings for survivors. Such adaptable, robust mini-robots would be quite challenging to create, however. A team of scientists from North Carolina State University are working on an alternative – sensor-equipped real cockroaches that are remotely controlled by human operators... Airbus unveils its 2050 vision for ‘Smarter Skies’

A future with more flights, fewer emissions and quicker passenger journey times

6 SEPTEMBER 2012 PRESS RELEASE

Global aircraft manufacturer Airbus today releases the latest instalment of the Future by Airbus, its vision for sustainable aviation in 2050 and beyond. For the first time the vision looks beyond aircraft design to how the aircraft is operated both on the ground and in the air in order to meet the expected growth in air travel in a sustainable way.

Charles Champion, Executive Vice President Engineering at Airbus, says: "Our engineers are continuously encouraged to think widely and come up with `disruptive' ideas which will assist our industry in meeting the 2050 targets we have signed up to. These and the other tough environmental targets will only be met by a combination of investment in smarter aircraft design and optimising the environment in which the aircraft operates. That is why our latest Future by Airbus Smarter Skies concepts focus on not just what we fly but, how we may fly in 2050 and beyond."

Already today, if the Air Traffic Management (ATM) system and technology on board the aircraft were optimised, Airbus research based on recent research suggests that flights in Europe and the US could on average be around 13 minutes shorter, and flights in other parts of the world could be shorter too. Assuming around 30 million flights per year, this would save around 9 million tonnes of excess fuel annually, which equates to over 28 million tonnes of avoidable CO2 emissions and a saving of 5 million hours of excess flight time. Add to this new aircraft design, alternative energy sources and new ways of flying and you could see even more significant improvements.

The Future by Airbus concentrates on just that and the Smarter Skies vision consists of five concepts which could be implemented across all the stages of an aircraft's operation to reduce waste in the system (waste in time, waste in fuel, reduction of CO2). These are:
Aircraft take-off in continuous 'eco-climb'
· Aircraft launched through assisted take-offs using renewably powered, propelled acceleration, allowing steeper climb from airports to minimise noise and reach efficient cruise altitudes quicker.

· As space becomes a premium and mega-cities become a reality, this approach could also minimise land use, as shorter runways could be utilised.

Aircraft in free flight and formation along 'express skyways'
· Highly intelligent aircraft would be able to "self-organise" and select the most efficient and environmentally friendly routes ("free flight"), making the optimum use of prevailing weather and atmospheric conditions.

· High frequency routes would also allow aircraft to benefit from flying in formation like birds during cruise bringing efficiency improvements due to drag reduction and lower energy use

Low-noise, free-glide approaches and landings
· Aircraft allowed to take free glide approaches into airports that reduce emissions during the overall decent and reduce noise during the steeper approach as there is no need for engine thrust or air breaking.

· These approaches would also reduce the landing speed earlier which would make shorter landing distances achievable (less runway needed).
Low emission ground operations
· On landing aircraft engines could be switched off sooner and runways cleared faster, ground handling emissions could be cut.

· Technology could optimise an aircraft's landing position with enough accuracy for an autonomous renewably powered taxiing carriage to be ready, so aircraft could be transported away from runways quicker, which would optimise terminal space, and remove runway and gate limitations.

Powering future aircraft and infrastructure
· The use of sustainable biofuels and other potential alternative energy sources (such as electricity, hydrogen, solar etc) will be necessary to secure supply and further reduce aviation's environmental footprint in the long term. This will allow the extensive introduction of regionally sourced renewable energy close to airports, feeding both aircraft and infrastructure requirements sustainably.

Airbus is already working on a number of innovative solutions today to meet the challenges of sustainable aviation in the future, whether it be the development and use of alternative fuels; investment in aircraft design; or in supporting more efficient ATM. Airbus is also one of the major actors of the NEXTGEN and SESAR programmes - which seek to enhance the performance of the ATM system through a better use of aircraft capabilities, changes in infrastructure and organisation. These new capabilities are designed to reduce traffic congestion and delays, will allow more direct routes, better flight profiles, and should help reduce the cost of air navigation services through advanced communications and technologies..

"We know people want to fly more in the future and our forecasts support this. We also know that they don't want to fly at any cost," says Charles Champion. Our focus at Airbus is on meeting this continuous growth in demand, keeping the passenger, our customers and the environment at the centre of our thinking. The future of sustainable aviation is the sum of many parts and success will require collaboration amongst all the parties who are passionate about ensuring a successful prospect for aviation."

Meeting the global demand: Airbus’ product line responds to the world’s new aircraft needs from 2012 to 2031

Airbus is well positioned to meet the continued upward demand worldwide for new aircraft during the next 20 years, benefiting from the company’s strengths in rapidly-expanding air transport markets, along with its continued evolution of a modern product line that includes the A320neo and A380.
4 SEPTEMBER 2012 HEADLINE NEWS

These were among the key points underscored by John Leahy, Chief Operating Officer - Customers, during his review of Airbus’ latest Global Market Forecast for the 2012-2031 timeframe, which was presented today at a London press conference.

According to the new Global Market Forecast, overall worldwide needs for passenger airliners (sized at 100 seats or larger) and for freighters is estimated at some 28,200 aircraft, having a market value of nearly $4 trillion during the two-decade period, with the world’s emerging economic regions being key drivers in this demand.

“Since the year 2000, emerging markets have been opening up very dramatically, and we’re seeing tremendous air traffic increases in areas like India, China, Latin America and Africa – where the growth rate in terms of revenue passenger kilometers is expected to be more than 6 per cent annually from 2012-2031,” Leahy said. “And I am proud to say that Airbus is very, very well positioned in these regions.”

Leahy explained that domestic air traffic expansion in China and India will lead the growth in revenue passenger kilometers through 2031, generating the requirement for modern, efficient regional aircraft such as the A320neo (new engine option). “The domestic PRC (People’s Republic of China) market will be the largest single market in the world in 20 years,” he added. “This means there will be more Chinese domestic traffic in 20 years than inside the United States.”

According to Airbus’ 2012-2031 Global Market Forecast, another factor creating the need for cost-effective regional airliners will be the increased presence of low-cost carriers in Asia-Pacific and Africa.

With overall worldwide passenger traffic growing at an annual rate of 4.7 per cent during the next 20 years, another need of global airlines will be very large aircraft in the category of Airbus’ A380, as well as large twin-engine jetliners. Leahy noted that the world’s aviation “mega-cities,” whose airports serve more than 10,000 daily long-haul passengers, will increase from 42 in 2011 to more than 90 by 2031 – accounting for over 95 per cent of all long-haul international trips.

“This generates the need for bigger aircraft like the A380,” Leahy explained. “We are ready to respond to these needs; Airbus is on track for deliveries of 30 A380s this year – having provided 81 of these aircraft to date, which are operating more than 100 flights per day, carrying over one million revenue passengers per month.”
For a detailed review of the 2012-2031 outlook, visit the Airbus website’s Global Market Forecast section, which has the report in booklet form – called "Navigating the Future" – along with briefing slides presented at today’s press conference by John Leahy and Chris Emerson, Airbus Senior Vice President - Future Programmes & Market Strategy. La NASA presenta nuevo concepto de avión supersónico "bidireccional"

Uno cree que ha visto casi cualquier tipo de concepto de "cacharro" volador, cuando llega la NASA y le sorprende con una especie de suriken ("estrella ninja") supersónica.

New NASA project: Silent and Efficient Supersonic Bi-Directional Flying Wing

Description: We propose a Phase I study for a novel concept of a supersonic bi-directional (SBiDir) flying wing (FW) that has the potential to revolutionize supersonic flight with virtually zero sonic boom and ultra-high aerodynamic efficiency. The SBiDir-FW planform is symmetric about both the longitudinal and span axes. For supersonic flight, the planform can have as low aspect ratio and as high sweep angle as desired to minimize wave drag and sonic boom. For subsonic mode, the airplane will rotate 90deg in flight to achieve superior stable aerodynamic performance. The conflict of subsonic and supersonic aerodynamic performance of conventional fuselage-wing configuration is hence removed. The preliminary CFD simulation for a SBiDir-FW business jet (BJ) at Mach numbers of 1.6 and 2.0 indicates that the configuration generates no N-wave sonic boom on the ground at a high lift to pressure drag ratio L/Dp of 16. The superior supersonic aerodynamic performance is benefited from the sharp nose and ultra-slender body with a low aspect ratio of 0.33, which translates to a very high subsonic aspect ratio of 33 for high subsonic performance. This proposal has three objectives: 1) design refinement of a supersonic SBiDir-FW BJ configuration using CFD; 2) mission analysis assisted with CFD simulation for the supersonic SBiDir-FW BJ to study the feasibility; and 3) wind tunnel testing of the SbiDir-FW BJ to verify its supersonic aerodynamic performance and sonic boom signature. The research team is highly qualified to perform the proposed tasks.

Boeing to Establish Avionics Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul Center in Korea

  • Affordable MRO services to focus on avionics components for F-15Ks
  • Facility in Yeongcheon Industry District of Daegu-Gyeongbuk Free Economic Zone supports Aero Techno Valley establishment

DAEGU, Republic of Korea, Sept. 3, 2012 -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Korean province of Gyeongsangbuk-do and the city of Yeongcheon to establish an avionics Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility in the region that will service avionics components for the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) fleet of F-15K Slam Eagles.

"Boeing continues to improve its services by bringing them closer to our customers, reducing turnaround time and costs for mission-essential components," said Joe Song, vice president of International Business Development - Asia-Pacific for Boeing Defense, Space & Security. "Over the past half century of working in partnership with the Republic of Korea, Boeing has come to know Korea's strong infrastructure and the excellent knowledge and talent base of its people and industry. We can tap into that as we expand our presence locally and grow our operations while supporting Korea's development objectives."

The facility, which will be located in the Yeongcheon Industry District of Daegu-Gyeongbuk Free Economic Zone, will support the area's Aero Techno Valley vision of a high-tech aerospace industry corridor and expanded in-country avionics capabilities. The location is close to Daegu Air Force Base and ideally suited for the Slam Eagle work as part of Boeing's Performance-Based Logistics (PBL) program.

"Partnering with a global leader like Boeing will help attract investment from local and international aerospace companies, secure government support and fuel our plans to establish an aviation-parts cluster here," said Gyeongsangbuk-do Gov. Kim Kwan-yong. "Adding high-tech, value-added business such as avionics to the Gyeongsangbuk-do region will open new doors for local industry, create more jobs for high-skilled workers and support technological competitiveness."

Boeing completed the on-schedule, on-cost delivery of F-15K Slam Eagles to the ROKAF in April. The company continues to support the ROKAF fleet through a long-term, affordable PBL sustainment contract. Korean supplier-partner Hyundai Glovis provides in-country logistics handling and supply chain distribution for the F-15K PBL program.

Boeing's history of cooperation with the Republic of Korea includes productive partnerships in the commercial and defense aerospace markets. The company employs nearly 190 highly skilled workers in Seoul, Busan, Gimpo, Sacheon, Seosan and Daegu. Today, Boeing works with nearly 20 Korean companies and spent more than $250 million with them in 2011, maintaining Korea's position in the top quartile of nations with which Boeing does business.

Boeing Fatigue Test to Validate Predicted Life of B-1 Bomber Fleet

TUKWILA, Wash., Aug. 30, 2012 -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] has begun a five-year fatigue test on the wing of a U.S. Air Force B-1 bomber to validate the predicted life of the bomber fleet, currently forecasted to be 2050. The test also will reveal potential areas of concern for which Boeing and the Air Force can develop maintenance and repair plans.

"This comprehensive testing is a proactive way for Boeing to meet its mission of keeping the B-1 bomber fleet ready and viable," said Rick Greenwell, Boeing B-1 program director.

Boeing and the Air Force also plan to fatigue-test a B-1 fuselage at Boeing Tukwila beginning in November 2013.
