Honeywell Aerospace is developing technologies that could help pilots perform simple commands using only their thoughts. The company's neurobotic control research is an offshoot of its augmented cognition work for military, which wants to find out when soldiers or pilots become task-saturated.
To sense what the brain is up to, scientists use electroencephalography (EEG) to monitor the minor voltage fluctuations that occur when neurons are moving in certain areas of the brain. Honeywell is not so much interested in the sensors, which the consumer electronics industry will likely perfect, but in the software and algorithms that make an assessment of cognitive state.
Once you can accurately sense that neuron movement and the "states" it represents, you can put the thoughts to work.
Santosh Mathan, principal scientist at Honeywell, says one input option is "imagined motor movements". Close your eyes and imagine you are lifting your left arm and pointing, and you are generating what Mathan calls "magic movements" which could be used to control something. That approach is a bit problematic however, as it "takes of lot of training to do it right", and not everyone will be able to have positive results.
More reliable is a method called steady state visual evoked response potential. The idea is that you look at external signals, for example oscillating geometric shapes on a display, with different shapes representing different commands.
Santosh says the technology could be used for non-safety critical functions, although Honeywell two years ago used the evoked response potential idea to fly a Boeing 737 in the simulator. Note that there are shapes for left, right, up and down commands. While interesting, Honeywell doesn't have any plans to market the idea, at least in the near term.

The development of airplanes has come a long way since the first controlled and powered airplane was invented and flown by the Wright brothers in 1903. We have gone from a small, one seater airplane, to huge planes that can seat over 500 people. Airplanes are continually progressing, and all-electric airplanes may be our future.
This may come as no surprise, as companies such as Lektro have already brought all-electric technology to the aviation industry with electric airplane tugs. But now, advances in technology have allowed all-electric technology to lift off the ground with the invention of small electric planes. The GreenWing e430, for instance, has been designed as a two-seater and uses a Yuneec OEM 133.2V electric motor. It can fly at a top speed of 68mph for about an hour and a half and is supposed to be a fun, ecofriendly plane.
The idea of an all-electric plane has been around for over forty years, but as of yet, a commercial all-electric aircraft has not been produced. The largest electric plane that has been invented so far is a two seater: the Cessna 172. This plane uses lithium batteries to provide energy and can fly for two hours at a time and is still completing development.
So let's look more closely at the details of electric airplanes in the following sections:

… Fuel efficiency
All electric planes will have less negative impact on our environment because of the fact that they will not burn fuel. Today, Boeing's 747 uses five gallons of fuel every mile. This means that about 36,000 gallons of fuel are being burned during a 10-hour flight.
If we could potentially reduce this number to zero in the next 20-30 years, we could greatly reduce our impact on the environment.
...Quiet flights
Battery powered engines are quiet, which will significantly reduce the noise on the airplanes and runway.
...Reduced costs
Perhaps the most convenient part of using all electric planes is that expenses could be significantly reduced. Even at the present, researchers are developing electric taxiing systems that allow a grounded aircraft to taxi without turning on its engine, which reduces the fuel used, noise produced, and allows the taxi process to be completed faster. Because of the fuel saved, that also translates to money being saved as well. For example, a 747 currently uses an average of 330 gallons of fuel to taxi. A system is currently being developed that uses electric energy, and only 8 gallons of fuel, that should be finished by 2015. This is a huge fuel saving, and would save about $200,000 per aircraft, each year.
Just imagine the amount of money that would be saved with completely changing to electric energy if using electric energy and 8 gallons of gas saves $200,000 per aircraft already.

...Boosted Batteries
In order to produce fully electric planes, the first step that developers will take is producing a battery that weighs the least possible, takes up the least amount of space, and holds an exceptional amount of power.
...Ultra-light Materials
Since more energy is used the heavier an airplane is, companies will produce lightweight parts from fiberglass and other such materials in order to cut down on the energy needed.
...Electric Mid-sized Crafts
Once better batteries and materials are produced, companies will be able to develop larger all electric planes. At the moment, a two seater is the largest all electric aircraft invented. However, as better parts are created, larger planes will be produced as well.
...Electric Commercial Aircraft
The hope for all electric airplanes is to not only have them available for private use, but for commercial use as well. Since the U.S alone uses over 18 billion gallons of jet fuel each year, expanding the use of electric planes to the commercial field will significantly reduce the U.S's carbon output.
...A Complete Turn from Petroleum
The end result of creating electric planes will be a complete end of the use of petroleum for fuel. Once this happens, not only will we be saving our environment, but we will be saving money and time as well.
Inventions such as a competent battery, ultra-light frame, etc. are not expected to be perfected until 2030-2040, making all electric planes a concept for the future. However, the future is bright, so fasten your seatbelts! Electric aviation is about to take off.

EC-LYG es la matrícula asignada al primer UAV Flightech Systems Altea-Eko que ha sido presentado hoy en Madrid por directivos de la empresa acompañados de Isabel Maestre, directora general de AESA.
Seis años, numerosas configuraciones y 9 millones de euros (7 más de lo estimado inicialmente) es lo que Flightech Systems ha necesitado para completar el desarrollo de este UAV (o RPA, siglas en inglés de aeronave tripulada remotamente, según los denomina OACI) según ha declarado Francisco Gayá, presidente de la compañía.
El Altea-Eko está pensado para misiones de vigilancia aérea; tiene una envergadura de 6 metros, 3,5 metros de largo, 80 kg de peso máximo al despegue. Su autonomía es de casi 5 horas con 500 km de alcance. Su velocidad máxima es de 150 km/h; la mínima de 70 km/h y la de crucero de 110 km/h.
Diseñado por los ingenieros de Flightech Systems (así como el sistema de piloto automático y su software), el avión ha sido construido en fibra de carbono por Aernnova, c0n el apoyo del INTA para su certificación y del cluster aeronáutico Madrid Network y la Comunidad de Madrid a la hora de definir sus capacidades y desarrollo.
Isabel Maestre ha señalado en el acto de presentación que AESA sigue trabajando en el Real Decreto por el cual se regulará la operación de este tipo de vehículos.
Espera esté listo en los primeros meses de 2014 una vez que las empresas del sector presentaron 180 comentarios al borrador del mismo. Personal de AESA juto a 42 personas de las empresas trabajan en la redacción definitiva del Real Decreto, del que Maestre ha dicho será muy flexible dado que nos encontramos ante un sector en constante evolución y que todavía está dando sus primeros pasos.
El Real Decreto incluirá aspectos como la segregación del espacio aéreo para su operación; la formación de los pilotos y las instalaciones en tierra precisas para su operación.
Según Gayá, Flightech Systems comercializará el Altea-Eko por 2,7 millones de euros en un paquete que incluirá tres aviones, una estación de control de tierra y servicio postventa durante cinco años.
Flightech Systems cuenta con 21 empleados, doctores en física, ingenieros aeronáuticos, electrónicos e informáticos y 27 accionistas.

El recorte, que supone el cinco por ciento de los 11.000 trabajadores que el grupo tiene en España, se enmarca dentro del plan de reestructuración presentado hoy por la multinacional al Comité de Empresa europeo, que contempla el despido de 5.800 trabajadores de las áreas de Defensa (Cassidian), Espacio (Astrium) y Airbus Military. Además el grupo ha anunciado la concentración de centros de trabajo en los cuatro países de origen de EADS.
EADS suprimirá 600 empleos en España hasta 2016
EADS ha anunciado hoy un plan de reestructuración que afecta principalmente a la que será desde el 1 de enero Airbus Defense and Space, Airbus DS, que agrupará las actividades que hasta final de año se dividían en Cassidian (Defensa) Astrium (Espacio) y Airbus Military (Derivados militares y aviones de transporte). El plan contempla la reducción hasta el año 2016 de 5.800 puestos de trabajo y la reducción de centros de servicios y productivos en los cuatro países que dieron lugar a la creación en el año 2000 de EADS, Alemania, España, Francia y Reino Unido.
De los 5.800 despidos previstos, 600 se recortarán en España, según ha declarado un portavoz del grupo a Fly News, lo que representa un 5 por ciento del empleo total de EADS en España, que asciende a 11.000 trabajadores. En cuanto a los centros de trabajo españoles que se verán afectados por la reestructuración se encuentran los centros de Cassidian en la Calle San Severo de Madrid y las oficinas de Castellana, cuya actividad se trasladará a Getafe. Igualmente, y según recoge EADS en el comunicado, se estudia el plan ya anunciado varios años para trasladar todas las actividades concentradas en Barajas, servicios centrales y presidencia, a Getafe. En Sevilla, se trasladarán las actividades de San Pablo Norte, centradas en el mantenimiento, a San Pablo Sur, y se estudia el traslado de Tablada, donde se fabrican diversos componentes, también a San Pablo Sur.
El portavoz en España de EADS ha manifestado que aún no está definido cuántos trabajadores de cada unidad de negocio se verán afectados por los recortes, y que se inicia ahora un largo proceso de negociación con los sindicatos. Así mismo ha incidido en el mensaje difundido por el grupo en su comunicado oficial de que se recurrirá a fórmulas ya utilizadas en el pasado como las bajas incentivadas, y la no renovación de contratos temporales. Además de la recolocación en otras divisiones del grupo.
Así, EADS informa en su comunicado que en Airbus y Eurocopter, a nivel global, se recolocarán 1.500 empleados. Otras 1.300 bajas corresponderán a contratos temporales que llegan a su fin en el periodo previsto y a bajas incentivadas. Así, las estimaciones del grupo hablan de una reducción real de plantilla de entre 1.000 y 1.450 empleados, "En función del éxito de las medidas de baja voluntaria", afirma el comunicado.
En la negociación que ahora se inicia, también se abordará la reducción de los costes salariales del grupo, "que puedan mitigar los efectos del plan de reestructuración".
Estos recortes se inscriben dentro del proceso de reestructuración de las divisiones de defensa y espacio del grupo, que se han visto especialmente perjudicadas por los recortes europeos en materia de defensa, y que el grupo ya había anunciado, cuando el consejo de Administración del pasado 31 de julio decidió la unificación de las diferentes marcas en una única bajo el nombre común de Airbus.
El comunicado del grupo explica también que de las 5.800 bajas previstas, 500 corresponderán a servicios corporativos, y "se está evaluando el calendario y la dimensión de un cargo no recurrente relacionado con el plan".
En declaraciones difundidas en el comunicado oficial, el presidente de EADS, el alemán Tom Enders, afirma que: "Tenemos que mejorar nuestra competitividad en defensa y espacio, y tenemos que hacerlo ahora. Con el retroceso de nuestros mercados tradicionales tenemos la urgente necesidad de mejorar el acceso a clientes internacionales, a mercados en crecimiento".
EN EL RESTO DE EUROPA
En Francia, el grupo se desprenderá de su oficina corporativa en París, algunas agencias han publicado que EADS espera obetener 100 millones de euros por la venta de estas instalaciones. Todas las funciones de esta oficina se trasladarán a Suresnes, donde ya trabaja la plantilla de la Oficina Corporativa e Innovation Works. Por su parte, todas las actividades que ahora están en Suresnes, se trasladarán a Elancourt o Le Mureaux, en la región de París, que se convertirán en la sede las actividades de defensa y espacio del grupo en Francia.
En Alemania, donde se ubicará la sede central de la nueva Airbus DS, concretamente en Ottobrunn, se verán afectados los centros de UnterschleiBheim, donde trabajan actualmente 1.000 personas que se trasladarán a la nueva sede central, mientras que entre 200 y 300 empleados de este centro se ubicarán en otros centros de Airbus DS en el sur de Alemania. En este mismo país, los empleados que trabajan en Bremen en el programa A400M quedarán integrados en Airbus DS a finales de 2014.
