Boeing files patent for artificial 3D printed ice blocks used for next-gen flight testing

If you’ve ever been out for a walk on a winter morning, you’ll have seen the grass covered by gorgeous ice crystals. These are formed when supercooled water droplets touch a solid surface. A delight to see when you have both feet on the ground, but a real hazard for airplanes everywhere. As a plane’s aerodynamic shape is crucial for a safe flight, a significant build-up of these ice crystals on the wings or the tail of a plane can seriously increase the chance of a disastrous crash.
That’s why the international authorities that provide aircraft certification stipulate that all new aircraft designs need to be tested in ‘known icing conditions’, through a ‘Flight Into Known Icing’ or FIKI. “Such certification test flights may require that the aircraft be flown with artificial ice shapes attached to wing and/or tail leading edges,” Boeing writes in its latest patent application. “Dry air flight tests with artificial ice shapes installed allows airplane performance and handling characteristics to be evaluated in stable dry air conditions and with the critical ice shape remaining constant.” read full story: http://www.3ders.org/articles/20160418-boeing-files-patent-for-artificial-3d-printed-ice-blocks-used-for-next-gen-flight-testing.html

Powered by a single electrically-charged calcium atom, the new device is claimed to have the equivalent thermodynamic efficiency (if scaled to size) of an average automobile engine. Basically a heat-exchange engine, its single-atom acts as both fuel and powerplant and is heated by electrical noise and cooled by laser beam.

It took Voyager 1 over 30 years to reach interstellar space, but scientists at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, are testing a new technology that could cut that time by two thirds. The Heliopause Electrostatic Rapid Transit System (HERTS) or E-sail concept is a novel form of propellant-less propulsion that relies on a series of wires to catch the solar winds. The technology promises to reduce the travel time from Earth to the heliopause – about 123 AU (18 billion km, 11 billion mi) from the Sun – to under 10 years.

Brazil’s Embraer, one of the world’s largest aircraft makers, has contracted with Rheinmetall to develop and supply a full suite of training equipment for the new Embraer KC-390 transport plane. A framework agreement to this effect has just been signed. For Rheinmetall, the programme should mean sales of well over €100 million spread out over the next ten to fifteen years.
Embraer Defense & Security’s KC-390 made its maiden flight on 3 February 2015 and is now close to going into full-scale production. Experts see excellent opportunities for the new aircraft on the world market. The Brazilian Air Force has already ordered 28 planes, and the armed forces of a number of other Latin American and European nations have expressed serious interest in it.
Rheinmetall’s Simulation and Training business unit will design, manufacture, deliver and support all training devices for Embraer’s revolutionary new KC-390 aircraft, including cargo handling, procedure and maintenance trainers as well as flight and mission training systems, including full mission and flight simulators. Rheinmetall brings to the project its vast expertise in training systems, especially for military transport aircraft, and will provide proven, innovative simulation technology for future KC-390 pilots, mission crew, loadmasters and maintainers.
"Rheinmetall is honoured to have been selected as the training devices partner in the KC-390 programme", declared Ulrich Sasse, president of Rheinmetall’s Simulation and Training business unit. "It’s exciting to be able to demonstrate our commitment to Embraer and the entire KC-390 programme by providing proven, state-of-the-art simulation technology from Germany."
Embraer KC-390 is a tactical transport aircraft that sets new standards in its category, while offering the lowest lifecycle costs in the market. It can perform a variety of missions, such as cargo and troop transport, troop and cargo air delivery, aerial refuelling, search and rescue and forest fire fighting. Embraer expects certification of the KC-390 jet by the end of 2017, with first deliveries of the aircraft scheduled for the first half of 2018.

(NYSE:TXT) company, today announced at the Asian Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (ABACE) that three years after establishing a joint venture between Cessna Aircraft Company and China Aviation Industry General Aircraft Company (CAIGA), deliveries of the Cessna Caravan single-engine utility turboprop have increased nearly 80 percent in country.
Textron Aviation’s exhibit this week at Shanghai Hongqiao Airport includes the Grand Caravan EX, and two more of its most popular regional products: the Cessna Citation XLS+ midsize business jet and the flagship of the Beechcraft King Air family of twin-engine turboprops, the King Air 350i with Fusion avionics. Textron Aviation is joined by its corporate sister company Bell Helicopter, which is exhibiting the Bell 429 in a VIP configuration. The 429 continues to gain interest throughout the region due to its state-of-the-art technology and luxurious interior.
“From establishing assembly and delivery partnerships, to aggressively investing in sales and support personnel, Textron Aviation’s approach of building a localized, company-direct presence in China is not only ensuring Cessna and Beechcraft products remain the leading models in China in the categories in which we compete, but also helping mature the business aviation industry here,” said Bill Schultz, senior vice president, Business Development, China. “The success of the Caravan and King Air in region demonstrates how being close to our customers allows us to be more responsive in offering solutions for their mission requirements.”
Turboprop versatility wins in region
With nearly 900 turboprop aircraft in the Asia-Pacific region, Beechcraft and Cessna’s turboprop platforms lead the market. The Beechcraft King Air and Cessna Grand Caravan EX have proven to be ideally suited to the region’s needs due to their ample range, solid load capacity and flexible special mission capability.
A favorite among private and commercial operators in the region, the Grand Caravan EX allows for extended missions and higher payload. The amphibian model has sparked a new segment in China’s aviation market by giving operators greater access to remote locations with a first-class interior configuration that can accommodate up to nine passengers. Latvia’s airBaltic Increases its Firm C Series Order to 20 Bombardier CS300 Aircraft
- CS300 aircraft’s first operator airBaltic and Bombardier enter into a firm agreement to convert seven option aircraft to firm as Riga-based airline transitions to all-Bombardier fleet
Bombardier Commercial Aircraft announced today that Latvian flag carrier Air Baltic Corporation AS (airBaltic) has converted its remaining seven option aircraft to firm. This latest order brings airBaltic’s total firm order to 20 CS300 aircraft. This agreement follows the airline’s conversion of three option aircraft announced in February 2014. The original order for 10 firm CS300 aircraft with options for another 10 was announced on December 20, 2012. The Riga-based airline will be the first customer in the world to operate the CS300 aircraft when it takes delivery in the second half of 2016 – an excellent companion to its existing 12 Q400 aircraft.
Based on the list price of the CS300 airliner, this firm order is valued at approximately $506 million US.
“Our fleet modernization continues as we proudly increase our all-new CS300 aircraft to a fleet of 20 technologically-advanced jetliners in order to support our ‘Horizon 2021’ business plan. This will substantially improve the connectivity of the Baltic region with Western Europe and the Eastern markets – all of which will help stimulate the economies of Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania, and create new jobs,” said Martin Gauss, Chief Executive Officer, airBaltic. “The CS300 aircraft will improve our passenger experience and convenience as we position ourselves for growth, reaching new destinations due to the increased capabilities of our new jets joining us later this year.”
