Spanish Air Force takes delivery of its first H215 and NH90

H125

  • The aircraft will be the first H215 in service in Spain
  • It will be based on Gran Canaria to perform Search and Rescue missions
Albacete – In a ceremony held at the Airbus Helicopters plant in Albacete, the Spanish Air Force yesterday took receipt of its first H215, a robust, cost-effective latest-generation helicopter with an extensive mission capability. The purchase was negotiated in July by the Spanish Ministry of Defense, through the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA).

A member of the tried-and-tested Super Puma family, the H215 is a twin-engine, heavy rotorcraft equipped with state-of-the-art technologies, which complies with the most stringent safety standards. Its onboard equipment includes multi-function digital screens and an advanced 4-axis autopilot which provides flight envelope protection, unrivalled precision, and stability in even the harshest operating conditions.

The aircraft carried out final test flights at the Albacete plant on 22 September, where it was painted and fitted with specific mission systems enhancing its Search and Rescue (SAR) and Personnel Recovery/CSAR missions. The Air Force’s H215 boasts additional fuel tanks that extend its range up to 560 Km, an emergency buoyancy system, a high-frequency radio, a hoist, and a cockpit compatible with night vision goggles, among other equipment.

The Spanish Air Force operates several helicopters belonging to the Super Puma family, in both civil and military versions. The aircraft operate in 3 SAR Squadrons as well as in the 402 Air Force Squadron, which is responsible for the transport of senior government officials. The new H215 will be assigned to the Air Force’s 802 Squadron/RCC Canarias and will arrive at its base in Gando (Gran Canaria) before the end of the year.

The new helicopter will enter into service straightaway, following a short training program for crews, who already have extensive experience of flying other versions of the Super Puma.

“We are very grateful to the Air Force for its renewed confidence, and I am proud to be here today to deliver a helicopter that is not only powerful, rapid and reliable, but also cost-effective, offering a highly optimized operating costs,” said Francisco Vergé, General Manager of Airbus Helicopters in Spain. “I wish you many flight hours, all with our first-rate support, which we are committed to providing you with.”

NH90

  • The NH90 is entering into service for the first time with the Spanish Army
  • The helicopters will be operated by the Army Airmobile Force
  • Airbus Helicopters will deliver a total of five NH90s to the Directorate General of Armament and Equipment by the end of 2016

Madrid, Today, the Directorate General of Armament and Equipment (DGAM) completed the transfer of the first two NH90tactical transport helicopters from the Airbus Helicopters plant in Albacete to the Spanish Army. The handover was made at the Coronel Maté Air Base in Colmenar Viejo, the headquarter of the Spanish Army Airmobile Force (FAMET) and marked the entry into service of the NH90 within the FAMET. The ceremony was conducted by Lieutenant General Juan Bautista García Sánchez, the head of the Spanish Army’s Logistic Support Command Center, who was accompanied by a number of civil and military dignitaries.

The NH90s, which the Army has renamed HT-29 Caimans, will form part of FAMET’s Third Manoeuvre Helicopter Battalion (BHELMA III), based at the Héroes del Revellín Barracks in Agoncillo. A third helicopter was already transferred earlier this month to the FAMET and is stationed at the Agoncillo base, where it is performing training missions. Two additional NH90s will be delivered by Airbus Helicopters by the end of the year, making it five aircraft handed over in 2016. In total, the company will supply 22 NH90 helicopters to the Spanish Armed Forces, under a delivery schedule that runs up to 2021.

On December 18, 2014, Airbus Helicopters signed an agreement with the Spanish Ministry of Defense for the delivery of the first NH90 GSPA tactical transport helicopter for FAMET. The aircraft was wholly assembled at Airbus Helicopters plant in Albacete and successfully completed the industrial, airworthiness certification and technical acceptance phases; a process in which the DGAM and Airbus Helicopters collaborated closely. Since 2014, Airbus Helicopters has delivered a total of three NH90s to the DGAM. The aircraft have been used to provide training for the first squad of Army pilots qualified to fly the helicopter.

Promoted by the Spanish Ministry of Defense, supported by the Ministry of Industry and managed by the DGAM, the NH90 program is the first that aims to meet the operational needs of the three branches of the Spanish Armed Forces. It is based on a common platform adapted to the requirements of each mission and featuring all the latest technological developments. As a result, it seeks to improve effectiveness and streamline operating expenses by reducing and modernizing the current fleet of helicopters, while also ensuring their sustainability over time.

The Spanish version of the NH90, the GSPA, has been designed to perform technical missions such as troop transport, search and rescue, personnel recovery and medical evacuation. It is equipped for day and night operations in all types of environments. Opened in 2007, the Airbus Helicopters plant in Albacete is responsible for the assembly of all NH90 helicopters for the Spanish Armed Forces, along with manufacture of the front fuselage section—both for Spanish helicopters and for those earmarked for export. It is also the only plant in the world to manufacture the rear fuselage of the Tiger helicopter, and the only Spanish facility with a helicopter-manufacturing capability.

Airbus and Boeing welcomes first-ever Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation

Airbus
6 OCTOBER 2016 PRESS RELEASE

Airbus welcomes the climate agreement reached by governments at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in Montreal, Canada, October 5th. The agreement puts in place the world’s first Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). This represents a key pillar in the aviation industry's climate action plan alongside technology improvements (including sustainable fuels), efficient operations and improved infrastructure.

“This is a crucial year for the global aviation community and ICAO. Following the successful agreement of a CO2certification standard for aircraft in February this year, the international carbon offset plan is another key milestone in supporting the aviation industry's commitment in reducing CO2 emissions", said Fabrice Brégier, President and CEO of Airbus.

"Airbus is fully committed to all pillars of the industry's climate action plan through delivering the world’s most fuel efficient aircraft, supporting the deployment of operational improvements around the world and facilitating the wider adoption of sustainable alternative fuels", Fabrice Brégier added.

Headquartered in Toulouse, France, Airbus is the leading commercial aircraft manufacturer offering the most modern, comprehensive and efficient family of airliners, ranging in capacity from 100 to more than 600 seats. Founded on innovation Airbus is more than ever providing the products and services to meet the environmental challenges of today and the ambitious targets we have set ourselves for tomorrow.

Boeing
SEATTLE, Oct. 6, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] today released the following statement in response to the International Civil Aviation Organization's adoption of a carbon-offset system:

"Boeing commends the International Civil Aviation Organization for adopting a carbon-offset system for international aviation that will help the industry achieve its goal of reducing emissions.

"This historic agreement represents the world's first sector-based, global market mechanism to address climate change and is complementary to the first-ever CO2 standard for airplane emissions that ICAO adopted earlier this year. These two significant agreements result from several years of collaboration by international experts from ICAO member states, the aviation industry and non-governmental organizations.

"The market-based carbon-offset system and CO2 standard are integral to the four-pillar approach the industry is taking to stop the growth of emissions by 2020 and cut them in half by 2050 relative to 2005 levels. These efforts also include: investing in new, more efficient aircraft; improving operational performance of the in-service fleet; improving the efficiency of air traffic management and other infrastructure; and scaling up the use of sustainable alternative fuels.

"We continually innovate to improve the efficiency and environmental performance of our products and services. The 787 Dreamliner family reduces fuel use and CO2 emissions by 20 to 25 percent compared to airplanes it replaces. The 737 MAX, with first delivery expected in 2017, will reduce fuel use and emissions by 20 percent compared to the original Next-Generation 737."

Compact drone uses beetle-inspired wings to snap open and take to the skies [feedly]

Folding components are becoming a hallmark of drones made for pilots on the move. Portability is one thing, but the time needed to unpack the aircraft and set it in flight can be an equally important consideration when it comes to search and rescue operations, an area where drones are showing real potential. By studying the intricate folding patterns of beetle wings, scientists in Switzerland have developed a drone that opens up and takes to the skies in less than a second with a couple of swift movements.

Argentinian Air Force select 8 Tecnam P2002JF as basic trainer

Tecnam announced that the Argentinian Air Force has ordered eight (8) Tecnam P2002JF single seat training aircraft for its Military Aviation Academy.

Local Tecnam distributor AEROTEC ARGENTINA SA was awarded the contract to supply the Tecnam fleet to the Argentinian Air Force under a lease purchase agreement. The aircraft will be assembled at AEROTEC ARGENTINA S.A’s Rivadavia, Mendoza Province facility under agreement with COSTRUZIONI AERONÁUTICHE TECNAM SRL.

During the first quarter of 2016, the Argentinian Air Force initiated technical studies to incorporate a new simple trainer “screener” aircraft as the first flying step of its Military Aviation Academy.

With all Tecnam models already certified by the Argentina Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC), and with more than 30 brand new Tecnam aircrafts already delivered to private owners, aero clubs and flight schools, the Argentinian Air Force selected the glass cockpit, night VFR version of the P2002JF.

The Tecnam P2002JF is a two-seat, single engine, low wing aircraft and is firmly established as one of world’s most popular single engine aeroplanes and thr aircraft of choice by so many Flight Training Organisations.

Paolo Pascale, TECNAM Managing Director: “We are delighted that yet another Air Force is choosing Tecnam for its training. We are honored by this choice and the Argentinian Air Force’s appreciation of our commitment to the quality of our products and service.”

Diego Cardama, AEROTEC ARGENTINA Director. “This contract with Air Force is further proof of how well the low maintenance and operational costs and excellent handling and the many other Tecnam benefits are valued by our customers in Argentina.”

Aerotec was founded in 1996 by Mario Cardama and his sons: Diego, Mario N and José. The company is offering several aerial services as agriculture, touristic aviation. It is the exclusive Tecnam Dealer in Argentina and Chile.

The Air Force’s history begins with the establishment of the Army Aviation Service’s Escuela de Aviación Militar (Military Aviation School) on 10 August 1912. Several military officers were amongst the pioneers of Argentine aviation, including Jorge Newbery, a retired Argentine Navy officer. The school began to turn out military pilots who participated in milestone events in Argentine aviation, such as the crossing of the Andes mountains. During all these years the Academy has gained a history and reputation of excellence and prestige in South America and worldwide.
