Government of Canada and Bombardier announce significant investment to strengthen leadership in aerospace

That is why, today, the Government of Canada announced that it will provide $372.5 million in repayable contributions to Bombardier Inc. This funding will be provided over four years and will support thousands of good middle-class jobs, strengthen the long-term competitiveness of Bombardier and help to build the aircraft of the future.

Through its collaboration with Bombardier, the Government of Canada is investing in thousands of Canadians and hundreds of suppliers across the country. As the nation’s largest aerospace company, Bombardier supports thousands of jobs in design, engineering and manufacturing through its nation-wide supply chain of companies.

This initiative by the Government of Canada will fund research and development for the new Global 7000 business jet and ongoing activities related to the development of the company’s C Series aircraft.

These activities strengthen the skills and knowledge of Canadians working in the aerospace sector, and they lead to new manufacturing platforms that position Canadians working in the sector for the jobs of tomorrow. Quick factsAerospace leads all manufacturing industries in research and development. It accounts for nearly one-third of all research and development activity in Canada’s manufacturing sector, which translates to $28 billion of economic activity every year. Canada’s aerospace sector employs, directly and indirectly, 211,000 people across the country.

Aerospace companies are Canada’s leading exporters in terms of trade intensity at twice that of the manufacturing average. Close to 80 percent of aerospace manufacturing was exported in 2015.
The repayable contribution to the Global 7000 jet will be made through the Strategic Aerospace and Defence Initiative (SADI). This program supports specific research and development activities that help aerospace and defence companies develop new technologies.

Another portion of this investment will be made through the government’s existing contribution agreements with Bombardier. This contribution will support ongoing activities related to the development of the company’s C Series aircraft. The C Series is an example of Canadian innovation and clean technology that is the future of the aerospace industry.

In May 2005, Canada first announced that it would support the C Series with a $350-million repayable contribution.

On October 11, 2016, the government announced an investment of up to $54 million to support a Bombardier-led consortium under the Technology Demonstration Program. The consortium will develop state-of-the-art electric systems and advanced aerodynamic systems that will make the aircraft of the future more energy efficient, reliable and quiet.

Flynas orders 60 Airbus A320neo Family aircraft

Flynas, Saudi Arabia’s leading low-cost carrier, has signed an agreement with Airbus for 60 A320neo Family aircraft.

In addition to the 60 aircraft, Flynas has converted 20 A320ceo from a previous order to A320neo bringing the airline’s total firm order to 80 A320neo. The deliveries are scheduled to take place during 2018-2026.

The agreement was announced today in Riyadh at a press conference attended by Ayed Al Jeaid, Chairman, NAS Holding, Bander Al Mohanna, Chief Executive Officer, NAS Holding Group and Fouad Attar, Managing Director, Airbus Middle East.

Flynas, an all Airbus operator, currently has 26 A320ceo in service. Launched in 2007, the airline has successfully operated over 260,000 flights and carried more than 30 million passengers in the last ten years.

In 2016, Flynas set a new record by carrying 6.3 million passengers contributing to a 14% year-on-year increase. The A320neo will provide Flynas unbeatable efficiency and comfort in both high-density domestic segments as well as thinner routes.

The A320neo Family is the world’s best-selling single aisle aircraft with more than 5,000 orders from 90 customers since its launch in 2010. It incorporates latest technologies including new generation engines and Sharklet wing tip devices, which together deliver more than 15 percent in fuel savings from day one and 20 percent by 2020 with further cabin innovations. The A320neo also offers significant environmental performance with nearly 50 percent reduction in noise footprint compared to previous generation aircraft.

Transfer of A380 MSN4 to the Le Bourget aerospace museum

As part of its contribution to preserving aviation heritage, Airbus will be transferring four of its test aircraft to museums: the Museum of Air and Space in Paris-Le Bourget and Aeroscopia in Toulouse.

These aircraft comprise: A320 MSN1, recently withdrawn from the test aircraft fleet; A340-600 MSN360; A380 MSN2 and A380 MSN4. These aircraft will benefit from heritage preservation measures and will soon be presented to the public.

The first aircraft to be transferred will be A380 MSN4, which will arrive in Le Bourget on 14th February. The other three aircraft maintained by Airbus Heritage in Toulouse, within the Airbus plant, will travel to Aeroscopia in Toulouse within the next two years, when an area in the northern part of the museum has been made ready for them. All these aircraft cover more than 30 years of flight tests and commercial success for the Airbus brand.

Following the arrival of A380 MSN4 in Le Bourget and in preparation for its display at the museum there – one of the largest aviation museums worldwide – the iconic test aircraft will undergo a unique refurbishment to showcase its operational role. Once an initial phase of technical work has been carried out on the airframe – which will include structural preservation – a special exhibit will also be created inside the aircraft’s interior to enable the greatest possible number of people to visit it from 2018 to experience the success of Airbus.

A Florida aviation college is leading the fusion of fossil-fuel engines with electric propulsion

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University researchers have become the nucleus around which a new nine-seat hybrid electric turboprop aircraft could be built in the near future.

The effort is being run out of the college’s Eagle Flight Research Center, at its Daytona Beach, Florida, campus, and is headed by aerospace professor and researcher Pat Anderson.

Airbus Helicopters achieves delivery targets and maintains market leadership in 2016

Marignane, Airbus Helicopters delivered 418 rotorcraft in 2016, a five percent increase compared with 2015, against a challenging market backdrop. The company strengthened its lead on the civil and parapublic helicopter market while maintaining its position on the military market.

Airbus Helicopters logged gross orders for 388 helicopters in 2016, a stable performance compared to the 383 gross orders of 2015. In 2016, bookings notably included 188 orders for light-single engine helicopters, 163 orders for the H135/H145 light-twins and 23 for the Super Puma family. At the end of 2016, the overall backlog stood at 766 helicopters.

“The multiple challenges faced in 2016 have increased our resolve to support our customers with an ever-increasing commitment to quality and safety, leveraging the most modern portfolio of products and services”, said Guillaume Faury, Chief Executive Officer of Airbus Helicopters. “For the rotorcraft industry as a whole, 2016 was probably the most difficult year of the last decade. Despite this challenging market environment we delivered on our operational objectives and proceeded with the execution of our transformation plan”, he added.

Highlights of 2016 included success in key military campaigns for the H225M, which was selected by Singapore and Kuwait, as well as for the H135/H145 family which was selected in the UK for military flight training. Last year also saw first deliveries of the new AS565 MBe Panther naval helicopter to Mexico and Indonesia and the first flight of the NH90 Sea Lion for the German Navy.

On the civil side, the first H175 medium-twin helicopter in VIP configuration entered service in 2016, while the public services variant began flight-testing ahead of certification in 2017. A Chinese consortium signed an order for 100 H135s to be assembled locally over the next ten years. Certification of the Helionix-equipped version of the H135 was granted by EASA in November, while flight-testing activities of the next-generation H160 continued at a steady pace throughout the year, paving the way for the first firm orders to be signed in 2017.

In 2016 the global fleet of approximately 12,000 Airbus helicopters, in service with more than 3,000 operators worldwide, reached 90 million flight hours; helping customers save lives, protect people and carry out their most demanding missions on a daily basis.

Carbures arranca su fábrica de China con la obtención del Qualification Report de Airbus

  • Carbures ha obtenido el certificado de Airbus para poder fabricar en su planta de Harbin, China, situada puerta con puerta con la del gigante aeronáutico y Hafei.
  • El grupo industrial dirigido por Rafael Contreras empezará con la fabricación de estructuras en materiales compuestos y seguirá realizando los cortes de paneles Honeycomb del Airbus A350.
  • Carbures se posiciona como uno de los fabricantes de referencia en un sector con tantas barreras de entrada como el aeronáutico y en un mercado tan exigente como el chino. Es el único Tier 2 europeo que ha conseguido implantarse en China y certificarse.

 

El Puerto de Santa María, 30 de enero de 2017. Carbures despega en China. La compañía liderada por Rafael Contreras arrancará su producción en su planta de Harbin (China) después de obtener por parte de Airbus el certificado necesario para poner en marcha los procesos industriales aeronáuticos de fabricación en materiales compuestos.

 

De esta forma, Carbures supera las altas barreras de entrada en la aeronáutica y se consolida como uno de los fabricantes de referencia en este sector. Además, la Compañía consigue dar el paso definitivo para acceder de lleno al también exigente mercado chino.

 

En línea con su estrategia operativa, la fábrica de Carbures en China está situada puerta con puerta con su principal cliente en el sector aeroespacial, Airbus, y Hafei. La ventaja competitiva de la fabricación de Carbures en Harbin es geoestratégica –tiene el objetivo de fabricar materiales compuestos para clientes chinos– y, además, pretende reducir costes manteniendo los estándares de calidad europeos y con los altos performances industriales y de calidad de Carbures  reconocidos por Airbus.

 

Carbures ultimó el proceso de certificación del autoclave en Harbin en los últimos meses de 2016 para poder comenzar a funcionar y fabricar piezas de avión en materiales compuestos. En ese momento, ya produjo las primeras piezas en esta fábrica, como parte del proceso técnico-industrial necesario para que las autoridades competentes certificaran que la planta sigue los rigurosos procesos de fabricación que la industria aeroespacial exige.

 

Se realizó el curado de las piezas, consistente en un proceso químico llamado polimerización de la fibra de carbono y la resina para que, una vez curadas, obtengan las propiedades mecánicas y estructurales exigidas. Este proceso se realiza en un autoclave, un horno de ocho metros de longitud, donde se controlan la presión y la temperatura.

 

Carbures ya trabajaba para Airbus en China, concretamente desde octubre de 2014, con la firma de un contrato para el corte milimétrico y la preparación  del Honeycomb, parte de los paneles Belly Fairing del Airbus A350.

 

Carbures, que llegó a China en 2013 con cinco empleados, da trabajo en ese país a 26 personas actualmente.

[Rusia] TsAGI specialists develop a convertible airplane concept for regional aviation




Specialists of the Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute named after professor N.E. Zhukovsky (TsAGI, part of the National Research Center “Institute named after N.E. Zhukovsky”) have designed a light convertible aircraft concept. The aircraft is supposed to be fitted with two turboprop engines. Its distinguishing feature is an option of using it both for passenger and cargo transportation without any changes required in the standard design. The aircraft is capable of carrying 50 passengers a distance of 1,500 km or 6 tons of cargo a distance of 1,000 km.

To implement the concept, the Institute scientists have researched a light convertible aircraft mockup in TsAGI’s low-speed wind tunnel. The goal of the tests was to estimate the take-off and landing characteristics, as well as cruise performance of the aircraft. The research has proved considerable information on the advanced aircraft’s aerodynamic characteristics in a wide range of angles of attack and gliding angles.

“The concept offered by TsAGI scientists will provide Russian aviation with a new turboprop aircraft for cargo-and-passenger transportation in local and regional routes as soon as possible, thus increasing the accessibility of the country’s regions by air,” Vladimir Chernousov, the Chief Designer of the light convertible aircraft project and the Lead Engineer of the Aircraft Aerodynamics and Flight Dynamics Complex explained. “Our experience in designing an aircraft of this class will allow minimizing technical and financial risks.”

A new series of tests of the advanced medium transport twin-fuselage aircraft mockup were completed in the low-speed wind tunnel of the Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute named after professor N.E. Zhukovsky (TsAGI, part of the National Research Center “Institute named after N.E. Zhukovsky”). The goal of the experiments was to estimate the aerodynamic characteristics and to visualize a physical image of aircraft flow.

Research was done on the longitudinal and side aerodynamic characteristics of the mockup in a cruise configuration, as well as simulating near the earth’s surface, at an air speed up to 50 m/s. Using a wool-tuft technique, the Institute’s scientists visualized the flow patterns. This allowed identifying specific features of the mockup flow and comparing them to the aerodynamic characteristics.

The experiments have shown that the mockup of the transport twin-fuselage aircraft under research has the characteristics comparable to the standard characteristics of a high-winged T-tail single-fuselage aircraft. The results obtained prove remarkable high aerodynamic cleanness of the twin-fuselage configuration.

The project has been developed by TsAGI specialists within the framework of the state program “Aircraft industry development in 2013–2025.” The aircraft is intended for transportation of a wide range of loads with the total weight up to 40 tons. According to the preliminary analysis, with the commercial load being the same, the dead load and longitudinal dimensions of the twin-fuselage aircraft are smaller than those of the single-fuselage one. Additionally, the twin-fuselage aircraft ensures easier loading and unloading within a shorter time.

The aircraft is intended for intercontinental transportation of large amounts of cargo — up to 500 t, including transportation in approved containers. They are to be placed in compartments inside a wing and loaded via flap doors of fore-sections (leading edges) in the aircraft’s center. The aircraft will utilize existing runways. The largest part of this aircraft’s flight takes place at an altitude of 3-12 m above water, ice or ground: these surfaces produce a screening effect which improves the lift/drag ratio considerably, leading to a decrease in fuel consumption and a significant increase in flight range.

As part of the concept research, a model was created and tested by the Institute’s specialists in a subsonic wind tunnel. The works were performed at cruise and take-off and landing ratings. Water, ice and ground surfaces were simulated with a screen, which was a plate with rounded corners. The experiment has proved that the layout under research has a high aerodynamic cleanness both near, and in the absence of the screen, thus enabling a steady and guided flight of the aircraft.

The aircraft is to employ liquefied natural gas. This cryogenic fuel has a higher energy efficiency and lower noxious emissions as compared to aviation kerosene. Use of natural gas will ensure environmental safety of a flight, thus giving a weighty competitive advantage as compared to existing transportation systems.

Saab has acquired another 10 percent of shares, reaching 25 percent of stakes, in Akaer, one of the largest companies within development of aeronautical projects in Brazil.
In conjunction with the expansion of the Saab-Akaer partnership, Akaer acquires 100 percent of the shares of the Space and Defense Division (E&D) of the Brazilian optronic company Opto Eletrônica S.A.
