TsAGI explores MC-21 motion on a slick runway

The Zhukovsky Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI) continues MC-21 prospective aircraft testing. Now TsAGI scientists are studying the aircraft’s characteristics on a slick runway during a simulated rainfall.
Sediment on the runway leads to a reduced friction coefficient, additional slush force and even the wheel aquaplaning. The combination of these factors significantly affects the aircraft’s directional control and braking performance on the runway and, as a consequence, increases takeoff distance.
TsAGI Aerodynamics & Flight Dynamics Complex work objective is to define the impact of runway water depth, slush layer, ice on takeoff and increase in landing distances, as well as the change in characteristics of the aircraft’s stability and controllability.
TsAGI scientists created a mathematical model of the aircraft runway rollout with different states of runway surface. Scientists have developed new simulation models of the slush force, improved deceleration device and cornering force. The testing results identified the normal take-off distance, accelerate-shop distance and extended take-off at engine failure with various runway surface conditions. The Institute specialists identified the aircraft control characteristics at crosswind and thrust reversing.
"Our simulation program will be practiced at TsAGI flight simulators and will help pilots,” commented Viktor Bragazin, leading researcher of the TsAGI Aerodynamics & Flight Dynamics Complex . “The program will be improved after the MC-21 flight in different test conditions. In the future, the results may become the background for certificate tests on slick runways, and also provide the basis for aircrew recommendations.”
The MC-21-300 is a new generation aircraft with a capacity of 163 to 211 passengers and targets the largest segment of the aviation market. The aircraft provides passengers with a significant new level of comfort, due to the largest fuselage diameter in narrow-body aircraft. The aircraft is superior to existing counterparts in terms of flight-technical characteristics and efficiency. The major contributor to the enhancement of flight-technical characteristics of the aircraft is the wing made of polymer composite materials, the first-in-the-world, developed for narrow-body aircraft with a capacity of over 130 passengers. The use of composites in the MC-21 design exceeds 30% and is unique for this category of aircraft.
TSAGI completes hypersonic flight mode research of the Federation return vehicle

Specialists of the Zhukovsky Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI) completed the research of hypersonic flight modes of the Federation return spacecraft.
Institute scientists tested the spacecraft model at Mach numbers 7, 5 and 10, 5 to define its heat-transfer performance. “We simulated the space vehicle’s entry into the atmosphere,” explained Sergey Drozdov, TsAGI’s High-Speed Aircraft Aerothermodynamics Department, and D.Sc. in Physics & Mathematics. “High-temperature loads (over 2000° c) become operative during the hypersonic flight segment. The spacecraft’s thermal protection shield should withstand the load.”
The obtained data will allow verifying the calculation methods and data on heat transport which were the basic parameters for the thermal protection adoption. The testing results will also help to clarify the impact of the real features of the spacecraft geometry on the heat transfer characteristics. This will help scientists and engineers to design the prospective return spacecraft rationally and reliably.
The study took place in TsAGI’s T-117 wind tunnel at Mach numbers 7, 5-18, 6 with temperature conditions from 630 to 3200°C. No wind tunnel in Europe has similar capabilities.
Federation is a new-generation reusable piloted spacecraft. A firm development contract was awarded to RKK Energia by S.P.Korolev. The spacecraft is intended to carry a crew and suppliers to destinations at and/or beyond low Earth orbit. The spacecraft will send cosmonauts into moon orbit with a plan to place a space station there. Unique technologies are used to create the spacecraft: it will be constructed with advanced composite materials and will have a multiple docking unit. Modern avionics will better deal with the challenges of rendezvous and docking; improve the safety of the crew at orbit insertion and descent to the Earth. Federation will be capable of carrying crews of four into Earth orbit and beyond on missions of up to 30 days. If docked with a space station, it could stay in space up to a year. The total spacecraft weight in flight to the space station will be 14, 4 tones (19 tones when flying to the Moon), the vehicle mass upon return is 9 tones. Federation length is 6, 1 meter

Empresas Andaluzas Aeronáuticas Buscan Oportunidades De Negocio Con Firmas Americanas En La Feria Farnborough De Londres

Extenda organiza varias sesiones de networking con compañías de Estados Unidos, mercado al que Andalucía ha multiplicado por cuatro sus exportaciones desde 2015
Un total de ocho entidades andaluzas del sector aeronáutico, presentes en la feria Farnborough International Airshow 2018 (FIA) de Londres, se han reunido con firmas norteamericanas para buscar nuevos lazos comerciales, en una acción organizada por la Consejería de Conocimiento, Investigación y Universidad, a través de Extenda-Agencia Andaluza de Promoción Exterior.
En el marco de FIA, la principal feria del sector aeronáutico y del espacio que se celebra en Europa en 2018, Extenda ha organizado la participación de las empresas andaluzas en varias sesiones de networking con las ocho firmas de la delegación del Estado de Connecticut, las 14 procedentes de Washington y las de Carolina del Sur, en las que han podido presentar su oferta comercial con el fin de buscar nuevas oportunidades de negocio en el mercado estadounidense, en el que Andalucía ha cuadruplicado sus ventas aeronáuticas desde 2015, con un alza del 312%.
Además, la consejera delegada de Extenda, Vanessa Bernad, ha mantenido varias reuniones con representantes de los citados estados norteamericanos para conocer de primera mano la industria estadounidense y plantear acciones conjuntas para ampliar las relaciones comerciales. “Nuestro objetivo es acercar a las empresas andaluzas a los mercados exteriores y a los inversores extranjeros para impulsar proyectos relacionados con la industria aeronáutica y con ello reafirmar el compromiso del Gobierno andaluz por este sector estratégico para la economía de la región”, aseguró Bernad.
En concreto, la consejera delegada de Extenda ha mantenido una reunión de trabajo con los representantes de Carolina del Sur, uno de los estados norteamericanos con una mayor presencia de contratistas del sector aeronáutico implantados, como Boeing o Lockead Martin. En este encuentro, se han establecido los primeros lazos de colaboración para promover la participación de estas empresas en la próxima misión inversa que Extenda organizará para el sector en el inicio de 2019, así como para la organización de una misión directa a este estado en la que se desarrolle una agenda de reuniones con compañías andaluzas interesadas en expandir su negocio al mercado americano.
Vanessa Bernad mantuvo igualmente un encuentro con los representantes de Connecticut, estado anfitrión en la última misión directa a Estados Unidos que organizó Extenda para este sector, y con los que se ha acordado que empresas locales acudan también como invitadas a la misión inversa que Extenda organizará para las empresas aeronáuticas andaluzas en 2019.

Además, Extenda ha intercambiado información sobre las empresas andaluzas presentes en FIA con la delegación de Canadá formada por 91 firmas y con la cinco procedentes de la región francesa de Bretaña para promover una agenda de reuniones bilaterales entre ellas.
El objetivo de estas reuniones es seguir trabajando en la estrategia de diversificación de mercados dentro del proceso de internacionalización de las empresas andaluzas, apuntando hacia destinos de referencia en el sector aeronáutico como Canadá o Francia, así como otros con gran protagonismo mundial y en los que Andalucía aún tiene mucho potencial de crecimiento, como el mercado estadounidense, en el que la región ha experimentado una importante progresión en los tres últimos años, al cuadruplicar sus ventas aeronáuticas desde 2015.
En cualquier caso, se trata de un sector en el que Andalucía lideró las exportaciones españolas del sector aeronáutico en 2017, con 3.293 millones de euros, el 57% de las ventas nacionales, una cifra que supone que las empresas andaluzas han duplicado su facturación internacional en sólo tres años, con un alza del 112% respecto a las ventas de 2015 (1.553 millones de euros).
Apoyo al sector
Asimismo, en el marco de la feria, la consejera delegada de Extenda ha asistido a la recepción de la International Aviation Women Association (IAWA) en el stand de Airbus Hospitality Lounge, un encuentro en el que han participado empresas andaluzas como Sofitec, Grabysur y Ebas Group.
Además, Vanessa Bernad ha mantenido un encuentro de trabajo en Londres con la consejera económica y comercial de la Embajada de España, Inmaculada López Martínez, para avanzar en la mejor estrategia para estrechar los lazos comerciales entre Andalucía y Reino Unido, abordando cómo puede afectar el Brexit al comercio exterior de las empresas andaluzas y planteando qué acciones se pueden acometer de forma conjunta para apoyar a las firmas de la región en Reino Unido.
Participación andaluza
La delegación andaluza presente en FIA está formada por ocho entidades, cuatro de las cuales exponen de forma agrupada en el stand de Extenda. En concreto, se trata de la Fundación Hélice-Cluster Aeroespacial Andaluz, así como las firmas sevillanas Gazc, UMI Aeronáutica y Aerotecnic Metallic SLU. Además, otras cuatro empresas sevillanas exponen de manera individual en Farnborougn. Son Grabysur, Sofitec, Ebas Group e Idecam-DTE.
La organización de esta acción por parte de Extenda será cofinanciada con fondos procedentes de la Unión Europea a través del P.O. FEDER de Andalucía 2014-2020, dotado con una contribución comunitaria del 80%.
Estados Unidos, un mercado en expansión
Según datos de Extenda, las exportaciones andaluzas aeronáuticas a Estados Unidos se han multiplicado por cuatro en los tres últimos años, con un incremento del 312% desde 2015, hasta los 58 millones de euros de 2017.
La tendencia positiva se mantiene en el primer cuatrimestre de 2018, con un incremento de las ventas de 81% hasta los 24,8 millones de euros, con los que Andalucía pasa a liderar las exportaciones nacionales aeronáuticas a Estados Unidos, por delante de Madrid (12,8 millones, el 29,1%), y es la comunidad que más crece de las seis más exportadoras.
Con estos datos, Estados Unidos se convierte en el cuarto mercado de las exportaciones aeronáuticas andaluzas, ganando una posición sobre el mismo periodo de 2017. Sevilla concentra la práctica totalidad de las ventas, con 24,3 millones, con un alza del 84%; mientras que con cifras menores se encuentran por detrás Málaga, con 227.000 euros, que duplica su dato con un aumento del 153%; y Córdoba con 204.000 euros.
Andalucía exportó principalmente partes de los aparatos, con 24,5 millones y una subida del 86%. Además, el número de empresas exportadoras regulares (más de cuatro años exportando) se mantiene en el primer cuatrimestre con respecto a las registradas en todo 2017, con once firmas en total.
Acciones para abordar el mercado norteamericano
Extenda trabaja en una programación específica para potenciar la diversificación de mercados y mejorar la posición de las empresas andaluzas aeronáuticas en el mercado estadounidense. Desde 2015, ha organizado 28 acciones específicas para este sector enfocadas a mejorar su negocio en Estados Unidos, que han contado con 48 empresas, que han generado 93 participaciones.
Entre las más recientes, destaca en 2017 la organización del foro ‘Industrial Day’, que contó con la participación de un total de 21 firmas andaluzas en un encuentro empresarial con la compañía norteamericana General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. (GA-ASI), que buscaba proveedores para un nuevo proyecto de fabricación de drones para la Armada Española.
Además, promovió una misión comercial inversa con directivos de cinco grandes fabricantes internacionales (OMEs) procedentes de Estados Unidos, Canadá y Suiza, que Extenda organizó en Sevilla y que contó concretamente con representantes de Boeing, Bombardier, Lockheed Martin, Textron Aviation y Pilatus Aircraft. En ella, participaron 29 empresas andaluzas del cluster aeroespacial.
A esta acción se sumó también una misión comercial directa del sector aeroespacial a Canadá y Estados Unidos, en la que participaron 19 empresas del cluster andaluz, que pudieron mantener reuniones de negocio con las principales tractoras de ambos países, Bombardier y Boeing, respectivamente.
Ya en 2018, Extenda organizó una misión comercial directa a la costa este de Estados Unidos, en la que las 15 firmas participantes tuvieran la posibilidad de conocer de primera mano las claves de la industria aeroespacial estadounidense. La agenda de trabajo, que se desarrolló el pasado mes de junio, incluyó las visitas a compañías locales como Sikorsky-Lockheed Martin, Pratt and Whitney (P&W), UTC Aerospace Systems, Embraer Executive Aircraft y Piper Aircraft, así como a la lanzadera de la NASA en Cabo Cañaveral.

This engineering solution allows a preview of ergonomic issues during the assembly process, understand the whole process as well as teach the operator how to proceed and react against issues. This virtual reality application contains design and manufacturing specifications with all the specific requirements.
CT is a preferred engineering services supplier (E2S) and a preferred provider of manufacturing engineering services strategic supplier (ME3S) to the Airbus Group. CT works with all Airbus divisions and their extended network of suppliers, Tier-1 and RSPs. Since 1994 CT has participated in the most important European aeronautical projects (A350XWB, A380, A320, A330MRTT, A400M,…) providing an engineering service that covers the entire product lifecycle, ie. structural design, stress analysis, manufacturing engineering, systems engineering, and after sales support engineering. La misión comercial ha servido para conocer en profundidad las necesidades de los principales fabricantes de helicópteros y presentarles la experiencia de Elimco Aerospace en la cadena de suministro de este tipo de aeronaves. Entre los contactos establecidos, destaca la compañía Sikorsky, una de las principales empresas de diseño y fabricación de helicópteros a nivel mundial, que además ha permitido acceder a su empresa matriz, Lockheed Martin, que colabora con Indra y Navantia en la construcción de la fragata F-110.
“Estamos muy satisfechos con esta misión comercial organizada por Extenda, ya que nos ha facilitado contactos de muy alto nivel que nos van a permitir mostrar nuestras capacidades no solo ante los principales agentes del sector aeronáutico estadounidense, sino también en el campo naval, de gran importancia en nuestros planes de negocio”, ha destacado el consejero de Elimco Aerospace, Juan Salas, que participó en la delegación de empresas desplazada a diversos puntos de la costa este estadounidense, como Nueva York, Hartford (Connecticut), Savannah (Georgia), Orlando (Filadelfia) y Miami (Florida).
Asimismo, el representante de Elimco Aerospace tuvo la oportunidad de encontrarse con el gobernador de Connecticut, Dan Malloy, en la ‘Presentación del Clúster de Connecticut y Foro de Empresas’, en la que participaron universidades, centros tecnológicos y empresas locales.

Rolls-Royce today welcomes funding from the UK Government which will enable it, together with new partner YASA, to carry out ground-breaking research aimed at accelerating the adoption of all-electric propulsion in aviation.
Rolls-Royce is leading a research project known as Accelerating the Electrification of Flight (ACCEL) to explore the use of a high power electrical system in a demonstrator aircraft. We are working with YASA (UK), a manufacturer of high-power, light weight electric motors and controllers used in automotive, aerospace and industrial applications. Drawing on Rolls-Royce’s expertise in aviation design and safety, the project aims to flight test the system to gain a detailed understanding of the potential for electric flight. Rolls-Royce will be supported by Electroflight Ltd (UK), specialists in high performance electric powertrains including energy storage systems.
Rob Watson, Director of Electrical, Rolls-Royce said: “We are delighted to be leading this research partnership. We are already investigating the potential of hybrid-electric propulsion, building on our existing expertise in applications such as hybrid trains and gas turbine-powered naval vessels, but this funding from the UK Government will enable us to explore the potential of all-electric flight.
“The increased use of electrical systems is an inescapable trend in our markets and championing electrification is a core part of our long-term strategy at Rolls-Royce.”

Rolls-Royce is already exploring hybrid-electric propulsion – using a gas turbine engine as a generator to power an electric fan – for regional commercial aircraft through the E-Fan X demonstrator programme with Airbus and Siemens, announced last year. At the Farnborough International Airshow, Rolls-Royce is also showcasing a hybrid electric vertical take-off and landing (EVTOL) vehicle concept which could be adapted for personal transport, public transport, logistics and even military applications and take to the skies as soon as the early 2020s.

DARTeC - addressing the digital aviation challenge (press release)
Cranfield University and its partners in the £67million Digital Aviation Research and Technology Centre (DARTeC) will today announce the five primary research challenges that the centre will tackle when it opens in early 2020.
Launching the challenges in a white paper, entitled ‘Addressing the digital aviation challenge’, the partnership behind DARTeC will set out how they will aim to unlock the potential of digital aviation for the UK and global aviation industry.
With the pace of air travel growth already causing strains across the sector and UK passenger numbers expected to increase by 49% by 2050, solutions other than expansion of airport capacity and ground infrastructure need to be found.
Digital aviation has often been cited as being the next significant business transformation event of the sector and one which can support the industry towards delivering greater customer satisfaction while addressing efficiency, cost and capacity issues.
However, while many of the challenges of digital aviation are understood individually, there are very few opportunities to address them simultaneously within a collaborative research and technology environment. DARTeC will offer that opportunity by creating a ‘research eco-system’ underpinned by Cranfield’s global research airport and the University’s newly-opened autonomous vehicle research facility.
Funding for DARTeC is being provided by a consortium of leading aerospace and aviation companies including Thales, SAAB, Monarch Aircraft Engineering Limited, Aveillant – as well as Cranfield University. The Centre is also benefiting from £15.5m of funding from the UK Research Partnership Investment Fund (UKRPIF), a scheme led by Research England.
Launching DARTeC’s five research priorities at the Farnborough International Show, Professor Graham Braithwaite, Project Lead and Director of Transport Systems at Cranfield University, said: “Aviation is a key sector for the UK economy contributing £52 billion to UK GDP but the sector’s present rate of growth is simply not sustainable.
“We need new digital solutions to tackle the challenges of over-capacity in both airports and airspace, we need to create passenger experiences more fitting of the 21st century and we need to create more sustainable air travel. Working with our partners, DARTeC will greatly advance the application of innovative technologies within the air transport sector and will unlock the potential of digital aviation.”

Rolls-Royce is already exploring hybrid-electric propulsion – using a gas turbine engine as a generator to power an electric fan – for regional commercial aircraft through the E-Fan X demonstrator programme with Airbus and Siemens, announced last year. At the Farnborough International Airshow, Rolls-Royce is also showcasing a hybrid electric vertical take-off and landing (EVTOL) vehicle concept which could be adapted for personal transport, public transport, logistics and even military applications and take to the skies as soon as the early 2020s.

Cranfield University and its partners in the £67million Digital Aviation Research and Technology Centre (DARTeC) will today announce the five primary research challenges that the centre will tackle when it opens in early 2020.
Launching the challenges in a white paper, entitled ‘Addressing the digital aviation challenge’, the partnership behind DARTeC will set out how they will aim to unlock the potential of digital aviation for the UK and global aviation industry.
With the pace of air travel growth already causing strains across the sector and UK passenger numbers expected to increase by 49% by 2050, solutions other than expansion of airport capacity and ground infrastructure need to be found.
Digital aviation has often been cited as being the next significant business transformation event of the sector and one which can support the industry towards delivering greater customer satisfaction while addressing efficiency, cost and capacity issues.
However, while many of the challenges of digital aviation are understood individually, there are very few opportunities to address them simultaneously within a collaborative research and technology environment. DARTeC will offer that opportunity by creating a ‘research eco-system’ underpinned by Cranfield’s global research airport and the University’s newly-opened autonomous vehicle research facility.
Funding for DARTeC is being provided by a consortium of leading aerospace and aviation companies including Thales, SAAB, Monarch Aircraft Engineering Limited, Aveillant – as well as Cranfield University. The Centre is also benefiting from £15.5m of funding from the UK Research Partnership Investment Fund (UKRPIF), a scheme led by Research England.
Launching DARTeC’s five research priorities at the Farnborough International Show, Professor Graham Braithwaite, Project Lead and Director of Transport Systems at Cranfield University, said: “Aviation is a key sector for the UK economy contributing £52 billion to UK GDP but the sector’s present rate of growth is simply not sustainable.

Addressing the digital aviation challenge, DARTeC’s five primary research areas will be:
- Connected systems – developing digital systems that will operate at speeds that the current Aircraft Condition Monitoring System (ACARS) and the Aircraft Condition Monitoring System (ACMS) are not capable of producing.
- Unmanned traffic management – developing airspace management solutions that will bring higher levels of system resilience, safety and security while adapting to competition from UAVs to operate in the same airspace.
- Seamless passenger experience – developing a more personalised, intuitive and less stressful passenger experience by using digital integrated technology to examine challenges such as unified security, the elimination of triple waiting areas, optimised passenger flows and baggage separation.

The company's annual forecast, renamed the Commercial Market Outlook (CMO) to include detailed analysis of the dynamic aviation services market, was presented today at the Farnborough International Airshow. Recognized as an industry benchmark for global air travel forecasting, the 2018 CMO projects the total number of airplanes increasing 4.1 percent over the previous forecast.
"For the first time in years, we are seeing economies growing in every region of the world. This synchronized growth is providing more stimulus for global air travel. We are seeing strong traffic trends not only in the emerging markets of China and India, but also the mature markets of Europe and North America," said Randy Tinseth, vice president of Commercial Marketing for The Boeing Company. "Along with continued traffic expansion, the data show a big retirement wave approaching as older airplanes age out of the global fleet."
According to fleet data, there are more than 900 airplanes today that are over 25 years old. By the mid 2020's, more than 500 airplanes a year will reach 25 years of age – double the current rate – fueling the retirement wave. Tinseth said the data explain why 44 percent of the new airplanes will be needed to cover replacement alone, while the rest will support future growth.
Including airplanes that will be retained, the global fleet is projected to essentially double in size to 48,540 by 2037.
The single-aisle segment will see the most growth over the forecast period, with a demand for 31,360 new airplanes, an increase of 6.1 percent over last year. This $3.5 trillion market is driven in large part by the continued growth of low-cost carriers, strong demand in emerging markets, and increasing replacement demand in markets such as China and Southeast Asia.
The widebody segment calls for 8,070 new airplanes valued at nearly $2.5 trillion over the next twenty years. Widebody demand is spearheaded, in part, by a large wave of replacements beginning early in the next decade and airlines deploying advanced jets such as the 787 Dreamliner and 777X to expand their global networks.
Additionally, Boeing projects the need for 980 new production widebody freighters over the forecast period, up 60 airplanes over last year. In addition, operators are forecasted to buy 1,670 converted freighters.
The massive fleet generates a strong and growing demand for aviation services ranging from supply chain support (parts and parts logistics), to maintenance and engineering services, to aircraft modifications, to airline operations. Over the next 20 years, Boeing forecast an $8.8T market for commercial aviation services with annual growth of 4.2 percent.

Setting out Britain’s determination to remain a world-leader in the combat air sector, Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson has today unveiled a concept model of a brand-new, next-generation fighter jet as he launched a comprehensive strategy with a bold statement of intent for future British air power.
Announcing the publication of the new Combat Air Strategy
at the Farnborough International Airshow, the Defence Secretary said he
had taken action to strengthen the UK’s role as a global leader in the
sector and to protect key skills across the UK industrial base.
He outlined the Strategy in front of the combat aircraft concept model which has been developed by UK industry in collaboration with the Ministry of Defence – being publicly unveiled for the first time, it acts as a powerful demonstration of the UK’s world leading technical capability and industrial expertise.

The Strategy outlines the way in which the UK will acquire future Combat Air capabilities to maximise the overall value the UK derives from the sector. The framework will balance military capability, international influence, and economic and prosperity benefit along with the overall cost.
It reinforces the commitment in the 2015 Strategic Defence and Security Review to deliver the Future Combat Air System Technology Initiative (FCAS TI). The Government, in partnership with industry, is taking steps to grow existing world-leading design engineering capacity and skills, ensuring that the UK continues to be at the cutting edge of combat air technology.
The concept aircraft has been put together by British firms including BAE Systems, Leonardo, MBDA and Rolls-Royce, which have joined together with the RAF Rapid Capabilities Office to form ‘Team Tempest’ to pursue the opportunity.
Team Tempest brings together the UK’s world leading industry and sovereign capabilities across future combat air’s four key technology areas: advanced combat air systems and integration (BAE Systems); advanced power and propulsion systems (Rolls-Royce); advanced sensors, electronics and avionics (Leonardo) and advanced weapon systems (MBDA).
The MOD will now set up a dedicated team to deliver the combat air acquisition programme. They will deliver a business case by the end of the year, and have initial conclusions on international partners by next summer – with engagement with potential partners beginning immediately.
Early decisions around how to acquire the capability will be confirmed by the end of 2020, before final investment decisions are made by 2025. The aim is then for a next generation platform to have operational capability by 2035.
The UK is already a world-leader in the combat air sector, with a mix of skills and technologies unique in Europe, supporting over 18,000 highly skilled jobs. The sector delivers a turnover in excess of £6bn a year and has made up over 80% of defence exports from the UK over the last ten years.
Investment in combat air technology, combined with the strengths of UK industry, has resulted in the UK being the only Tier 1 partner with the US on the F-35 Lightning II programme, with British industry delivering 15% by value of every F-35 built. The UK has been able to help define the operational capabilities of the aircraft, while reinforcing UK industrial capability, critical skills and supporting wider economic prosperity.
The UK also continues to lead the way in combat air power as one of the four partner nations in the Eurofighter Typhoon programme. With more than 20,000 flying hours on deployed operations to date, the Typhoon delivers world leading capability, unparalleled reliability and proven interoperability with our allies. The MOD will continue to invest in the Typhoon for decades to come, with the best technologies being carried forward on to next-generation systems.
The F-35 Lightning II and the Typhoon are two complementary multi-role combat aircraft that will make up the RAF’s combat air fleet, placing the UK at the forefront of combat air technology - with the Typhoon expected to remain in UK service until at least 2040.

Rolls-Royce has unveiled a concept electric vertical take-off and landing (EVTOL) vehicle at the Farnborough International Airshow 2018. The design could be adapted for personal transport, public transport, logistics and military applications and is based upon technologies that already exist or are currently under development. It could take to the skies as soon as the early 2020s.
The Rolls-Royce EVTOL project is part of our strategy to ‘champion electrification’ and realise our ambition to become the world’s leading industrial technology company. It builds upon experience gained providing hybrid electric propulsion for trains, naval vessels and other applications, and our expertise in gas turbines, VTOL technology, systems analytics and aerospace regulation and certification. We would expect any commercial introduction of the EVTOL to involve working in collaboration with airframers and will seek a range of strategic partners for aspects of the electrical system.
The initial concept vehicle uses gas turbine technology to generate electricity to power six electric propulsors specially designed to have a low noise profile. It also has a battery for energy storage. In this hybrid-EVTOL configuration it could carry four or five passengers at speeds up to 250mph for approximately 500 miles, would not require re-charging – as the battery is charged by the gas turbine – and would be able to utilise existing infrastructure such as heliports and airports.
We believe that given the work we are doing today to develop hybrid electric propulsion capabilities, this model could be available by the early to mid 2020s, provided that a viable commercial model for its introduction can be created.
The wings are able to rotate 90 degrees, enabling the vehicle to take off or land vertically. The propellers on the wing could fold away once the craft has reached cruising height, reducing drag and cabin noise, with the craft relying upon the two rear propellers for thrust.
The EVTOL – or personal air mobility – market is emerging as a result of technological advances and a need to meet the demands that will be placed upon conventional transport systems as more of the world’s population lives in large cities plagued by congestion. EVTOL will also play a role in meeting the requirement for more efficient travel with fewer emissions.

The initial Rolls-Royce EVTOL concept uses an M250 gas turbine which is embedded within the rear of the aircraft and modified as part of a hybrid electric propulsion system. The M250 is a highly successful Rolls-Royce engine. Over 31,000 have been delivered since the first version entered service over half a century ago, with an estimated 16,000 currently in service. Montreal, July 9, 2018 - Bombardier today announced that it will be offering Head-up Display and Enhanced Vision System as an option on its best-selling Challenger 350 business jets. The HUD and EVS will complement the Challenger 350 aircraft’s best-in-class baseline offering. These systems will further expand the advanced avionics functionalities of the aircraft, such as the powerful Synthetic Vision System (SVS) and sophisticated MultiScan™ weather radar, to reduce pilot workload and enhance overall situational awareness.

The Challenger 350 jet features the best-equipped cockpit in its class. Without needing to look down, pilots can respond with greater speed and precision, while they simultaneously assess their surroundings.

Airbus to showcase innovative products and services at the Farnborough International Airshow 2018

Toulouse, 11 July 2018 - Airbus SE will present a broad portfolio of innovative products and services at the Farnborough International Airshow 2018 that meet the aerospace industry’s requirements for today and tomorrow.
In the flying and static displays, Airbus will showcase its modern and highly efficient range of commercial aircraft able to seat between 100 and more than 600 passengers. The static display will feature two A220-300s (a test aircraft and an airBaltic aircraft), which, along with the smaller A220-100, represent the newest members of the Airbus single-aisle Family following the recent agreement to take a majority stake in the 100-150 seat aircraft programme. An A321neo will also be on display on the Wednesday of the show week. Airbus’ latest wide-body models, the A330-900neo and A350-1000, will each participate in the Farnborough flying display for the first time. The A330neo, which features new wings and new generation engines, is due to go into service in 2018. Meanwhile, the A350-1000 offers the very latest in aerodynamics and advanced technologies to provide unrivalled efficiencies on long-haul routes. An A330-900neo of launch customer TAP Air Portugal and an A350-1000 of launch operator Qatar Airways will also be on the static display. At the larger end of the Airbus portfolio, a Hi Fly A380 will be on static display during the latter part of the week showing the flexibility of the double-decker aircraft.
Airbus Helicopters will present key market-leading product and capabilities as well as highlight research and development in unmanned solutions. On the static display will be a single-engine H125 helicopter equipped with special sensors and a telemetry kit that allow pilot and aircraft performance to be streamed in real-time to the ground for training applications. The aircraft is due to be handed over during the show to QinetiQ for use with the UK-based Empire Test Pilots’ School. Visitors to Farnborough will also see a full scale mock-up of the VSR700 rotary-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), which can bring beyond the horizon surveillance capability to naval ships.
Meanwhile, Airbus Defence and Space will demonstrate its broad product portfolio of military aircraft, space systems, secure communications and UAVs. An A400M military transporter in special Royal Air Force colours will take part in both the flying and static displays. Equipped with state-of-the-art technologies, the A400M can perform strategic and tactical transport missions and also undertake air-to-air refuelling. Also featured will be the world record holding Zephyr, Airbus’ solar-electric stratospheric unmanned aircraft that combines the advantage of a satellite with the flexibility and persistence of a UAV. Airbus will showcase its world leading secure communications networking and cyber security capability at one of the interactive ‘bubble’ displays at the Airbus Pavilion. Space expertise will feature strongly, including the environmental monitoring programme Copernicus where Airbus designs and manufactures Sentinel satellites. In the show’s ‘Space Zone’, Airbus will exhibit the ExoMars rover prototype that will drive on a simulated Martian surface. The ‘Network for the Sky’ airborne communications solution will also be presented for the first time.
The interactive ‘bubble’ displays in the Pavilion will present four broad key themes for Airbus by illustrating certain related activities. The ‘Future of Flight’ display will show how Airbus is further improving its portfolio and changing the future of mobility with aircraft such as the single-aisle A321LR that can serve new long-haul markets, the H160 helicopter and Urban Air Mobility initiatives such as Vahana and CityAirbus. The ‘Secure World’ display will showcase Airbus’ vision for defence and security including the Future Air Power family of connected systems to respond to the threats of tomorrow. The ‘From Data to Insight’ display will demonstrate how Airbus is harnessing the power of data through digitalisation initiatives such as the Skywise data platform. Another display area will demonstrate how Airbus is committed to developing a sustainable future together with its key partners and stakeholders. Featured projects include the Blade wing laminar flow demonstrator programme conducted under the European Clean Sky research programme. As the second largest supplier to the Royal Air Force and biggest supplier of large aircraft, Airbus will also show its strong support for the RAF’s centenary celebrations.

Airbus-led consortium to provide European Union with seamless satellite-based coverage of Europe at unprecedented scale and speed

Toulouse, 12 July 2018 – The European Commission and the European Space Agency (ESA) have awarded an Airbus-led consortium a contract for the provision of satellite-based seamless coverage of the whole of Europe at very high-resolution. The consortium includes Airbus Defence and Space, Planet, Deimos Imaging, IGN-France and space4environment. This agreement is part of the Copernicus Earth Observation programme for the European Union (EU).
As part of the contract, six million square kilometres over 39 countries will be covered in 2018 with freshly acquired very high-resolution optical satellite imagery. The result-based approach of the procurement has led European EO industry to federate and respond with a coordinated offer bringing together the strengths of each partner. The contracted solution leverages the latest in remote sensing and imagery processing technologies to deliver new data at an unprecedented scale and speed. The data will feed the geo-information services coordinated by the European Environment Agency with which European institutions and governments implement their environmental and land management policies.

The high revisit rate of Planet’s imaging system will allow it to image regions that are often covered in cloud, such as Northern Europe or the Alps, while Deimos Imaging and Airbus satellite resources will concentrate on Southern and Central Europe, where higher resolutions are required to map dense urban and suburban areas. A dynamic acquisition strategy and imaging redundancy within the consortium will guarantee the achievement of the coverage objective. Valid images, cloud and haze free, will be selected and combined with a specific Digital Elevation Model (DEM) in order to meet the European Commission and ESA geolocation accuracy specifications.

This dataset will be available to institutional users on a European and national level, and it will serve to create updated information about land cover, as well as land use (for example forests, urban areas, or lakes and rivers) over 39 countries in Europe.

Royal Australian Air Force KC-30A acts as receiver from A310 tanker
Madrid, 12 July 2018 – Airbus Defence and Space has followed its earlier achievement in demonstrating Automatic Air-to-Air (A3R) refuelling of a fighter with another world-first – the same operation performed with a large receiver aircraft.
In a joint operation with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), which is collaborating with Airbus in development of this pioneering technology, Airbus’ A310 company development tanker performed seven automatic contacts with a RAAF KC-30A Multi Role Tanker Transport, also made by Airbus.
The system requires no additional equipment on the receiver and is intended to reduce refuelling boom operator workload, improve safety, and optimise the rate of air-to-air refuelling (AAR) in operational conditions to maximise aerial superiority. Airbus has begun work towards introducing the system on the current production A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (A330 MRTT).
During initial approach of the receiver, boom control is performed by the tanker’s Air Refuelling Operator (ARO) as usual. Innovative passive techniques such as image processing are then used to determine the receiver’s refuelling receptacle position and when the automated system is activated, a fully automated flight control system flies and maintains the boom aligned with the receiver’s receptacle. The telescopic beam inside the boom can be controlled in a range of ways including: manually by the ARO; a relative distance-keeping mode; or full auto-mode to perform the contact.
In the 20 June flight off the southern Spanish coast, the A310 tanker performed the scheduled seven contacts over a two-hour test period.
David Piatti, who again acted as Airbus Test ARO, or “boomer”, on the A310, said: “It was extremely impressive to see how accurately the A3R system tracks the receiver. It can be very useful to be able to refuel another tanker or transport, for example to extend its deployment range or to avoid taking fuel back to base, but it is also a challenging operation and this system has the potential to reduce workload and the risk involved.”
The trial was conducted in conjunction with Test Pilots and Flight Test Engineers from the RAAF’s Aircraft Research and Development Unit (ARDU).
Squadron Leader Lawry Benier, Executive Officer for ARDU, said the RAAF were assisting Airbus Defence & Space on the development of A3R and other technologies to increase the utility of the KC-30A within a battlespace.
“It’s very encouraging to come to Spain and see the progress that’s been made with A3R, and be able to witness it firsthand refuelling our KC-30A,” Squadron Leader Benier said.
“Refuelling large receivers is a role RAAF has conducted extensively on operations and exercises, allowing us to extend the reach and responsiveness of our air mobility fleet, as well as keep surveillance aircraft in the air for longer.”

CAAS, EASA and Airbus collaborate to advance safety of UAS in urban environments

Marignane, The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and Airbus have agreed to collaborate in the development of safety standards and regulatory requirements for unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) in urban environments. The tripartite Project Document, which lays out the areas of collaboration, was signed by representatives from CAAS, EASA and Airbus.
The Project Document establishes a framework for the exchange of information and technical expertise among the three parties, to facilitate the development of safety standards and regulatory requirements, as well as operational and technological assessments for the deployment of UAS in urban environments, such as last-mile deliveries, leveraging Airbus’ experience with the ongoing Skyways project1. The parties will also share safety information and learning outcomes from the urban UAS trials. The parties also agreed to jointly organise UAS-themed activities such as educational workshops and seminars.
Mr Kevin Shum, Director-General at CAAS said, “This tripartite partnership is timely as we seek to better define the operating conditions for the growing number of beneficial uses of UAS in urban environments such as Singapore, with aviation and public safety in mind. We look forward to working closely with our partners and sharing our experience gained thus far in developing regulatory requirements for UAS operations in Singapore.”
