- Launch of SkyNRG’s ground-breaking program paves the way to sustainable aviation;
- 85 per cent reduction of emissions as a result of sustainable aviation fuel
Amsterdam, October 3rd 2019 – Today, a significant step will be taken towards sustainable flying. Dutch company SkyNRG, global leader in sustainable aviation fuel, officially launches its ground-breaking Board Now program together with its launching members. By committing themselves to Board Now, companies reduce their own business air travel emissions and at the same time contribute to the development of a new production facility for sustainable aviation fuel. Board Now is the worlds first program that enables companies to contribute directly to the development of this industry and actively paves the way for the energy transition in the aviation sector. A number of renowned organizations, such as PwC and Skyscanner, have already signed-up to the program.
Organizations that join Board Now, commit themselves for a period of 5 years to the purchase of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). With this commitment, they not only reduce their own business air travel CO2 emissions, but also contribute to the development of a new production facility. Their investment will be used by SkyNRG to cover the price difference between sustainable aviation fuel and conventional jet fuel. The coalition that participates in the Board Now program, ensures a substantial purchase of SAF that will be produced by Europe’s first dedicated plant for the production of sustainable aviation fuel in Delfzijl (DSL-01). Earlier this year, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines already committed itself to the purchase of 75,000 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel from DSL-01 a year.

First Batch of Tecnam P2012 Travellers Arrives in the US
press release
It was an historical day for Tecnam and for the P2012 program when the first two Traveller aircraft were ready to depart Tecnam headquarters in Capua, Italy, and wing their way across the world to Massachusetts, US.
With this ferry flight to the first customer, the P2012 Traveller is officially born and in service. These first two aircraft represent the first batch of the 100 Travellers ordered by Cape Air as a result of a thorough and intensive development process in conjunction with Tecnam.
A ferry flight across the Atlantic takes more than a safe, reliable aeroplane. It also takes skill, confidence and a great deal of experience. So, when Tecnam needed a crew to fly these first two P2012 Traveller aircraft from Italy to the US, who better to take on the task than the Managing Director himself?
Grandson of the founding brothers, 28-year-old Giovanni Pascale stepped up to the role of Pilot in Command and successfully led his crew on this 4,000 NM journey, which took only three days to complete. He ferried one of the P2012 Travellers together with Co-pilot Elio Rullo, while Capt. Vito Preti and Technician Antonio Covino flew the other. There may have been just four crew members on board, but to these men it seemed that, spiritually, the entire Tecnam team had accompanied them on their journey, staying in close communication at all times, and cheering them on from afar.
There were fuel stops in five different countries. Their first airport was Groningen Airport in the Netherlands, followed by Inverness in Scotland and Reykjavic in Iceland. Next came Narsarsuaq in Greenland, which is known as one of the world’s most demanding airports because landing requires approach to the runway through a fjord, surrounded by mountains and glaciers.
Their final refuelling was at Goose Bay Airport in Canada, before heading due south to Barnstable Airport in Hyannis, Massachusetts, US., where they were greeted by enthusiastic Cape Air Executives, Founder & CEO Dan Wolf, President Linda Markham and James Goddard – Senior Vice President, Fleet Planning & Acquisitions.
The Tecnam crew members were kept constantly busy during the flight. In the air, they were hyper alert, flying around the weather in very tough and sometimes challenging conditions. When on the ground there was no time to rest or eat, they were refilling fuel and filing flight plans and then getting back in the air as quickly as possible to take advantage of the weather.
Powered by two 375 HP turbo-charged Lycoming engines, the 11-seat Tecnam P2012 Traveller has a fuel capacity of 750 litres in the wings, but on this ferry flight — the longest ever for Tecnam — they carried an extra 450 litres in a collapsible ferry tank in the rear of the aircraft, significantly extending their range.
It was a very rewarding experience for the Tecnam crew, chasing the sun from one country to another, right across the world, with breathtaking landscapes and stunning topography along the way, especially crossing the Labrador Sea between Greenland and Canada.

SABCA is ready for medical drone flights over cities
press release
https://www.sabca.be/pages/0141/News.508.en.php
SABCA is part of an ecosystem in which leading companies from different sectors collaborate intensively with innovative hospital groups. This cooperation is demonstrated in various projects at European level (SAFIR), Belgian level (Medrona) and Flemish-Brussels regional level (HAI-SCS) and implicates the following companies: skeyes, SABCA, Baloise Insurance, NSX, Unifly, Proximus, Orange, imec, VIL and Helicus, the hospital groups GZA-ZNA, Helix and Jessa, as well as research groups from UAntwerp and KU Leuven.
Each partner excels in its field of expertise, which means that a robust total solution can be offered to hospitals and laboratories. It may be said that only by combining all this expertise the drone flights within the hospital network will become a success in good time. SABCA developed an eco-system that meets aviation standards and acts as fleet manager or support to operators. The company’s objective is to perform safety critical missions like flights over densely populated areas, offshore windmill inspection, surveillance over see and flights over remote areas.
To this end, SABCA offers its partners a range of services such as drone design, payload integration, ground and flight testing, drone qualification and certification, inspection, maintenance and repair activities.
After an intensive cooperation, the first medical flight between GZA Ziekenhuizen Campus Sint-Augustinus and the University Hospital of Antwerp (UZA) would have taken place on 25 September 2019. Due to weather conditions the flight is unfortunately delayed. This flights however, are unique in several aspects.
Innovation: Combining unrivalled innovative expertise to make medical transport by drone possible. The flights are fully automatic so that human errors are reduced to a minimum. In addition, the command & control system continuously monitors the drone flight. This means that the central system continuously measures the parameters of the drone and compares them with expected values. In case of deviations, the operator-pilot in the Command and Control Centre will be alerted. The operator-pilot can then (possibly) take over the control of the drone in the event of an exceptional situation.
Aviation: On behalf of Europe, the partners have worked together to help shape the air traffic organisation of the future. It means that other airspace users, such as manned aviation or other future unmanned public service flights (e.g. fire brigade inspection flight) are taken into account at an operational level.
Society: The medical transport by drones will eventually ensure that doctors and consequently patients receive results on time, regardless of possible traffic jams on the road. In line with the hospital reforms of Federal Minister for Health Maggie De Block, hospitals are increasingly working together in networks. This evolution is necessary to ensure the current high quality of healthcare in the future. The network organisation naturally leads to an increasing demand for efficient urgent transport, which risks further aggravating the current ground-based traffic problems. Drones do not run into delays due to traffic jams or traffic lights and thus avoid the growing transport problems on the road. Moreover, the distance to be covered is shorter and the road network is less burdened, so that we contribute to a greener society.
The drones and their freight fly from roof to roof, at a cruising altitude between 90 and 50 metres and with an average ground speed of 60 km/h. This means that the drones remain within the limits of the so-called Low Airspace. A number of flights will be scheduled in the coming months with the aim of organising a weekly flight day.

Taiwan Unveils New Advanced Trainer
https://youtu.be/i6ql02lguWM
AIDC’s press release
The rollout ceremony of the new Advanced Jet Trainer (AJT) for the Republic of China Air Force (ROCAF) took place at the Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation’s (AIDC’s) Sha-lu complex on September 24, 2019. The ceremony was officiated by Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen and was attended by officials from the R.O.C.’s National Security Council, the Ministry of National Defense and the Ministry of Economic Affairs as well as R.O.C. legislators and distinguished representatives from the international and domestic aerospace industry as well as AIDC itself.
The impressive exterior painting of the AJT incorporated the red, white and blue colors of Taiwan’s national flag. At the ceremony, the aircraft was officially named by the President Tsai as the Yung-ying (Brave Eagle) which won the online voting contest participated by the public. Sitting in the cockpit, President Tsai recognized the outstanding performance of the aircraft upon being briefed by an AIDC flight instructor.
President Tsai later inspected aircraft components manufactured in Taiwan and the Ground-Based Training System (GBTS) developed by the National Chung Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST) which was showcased for the first time at the event. The GBTS enhances the overall training results and efficiently saves operational and maintenance costs of the aircraft through customized flight simulation and computer-aided training system for logistics and maintenance. With readily available and comprehensive ground testing and flight test data, the fleet management, maintenance throughout 30-year lifespan and performance upgrade of the aircraft can be performed domestically in Taiwan.
By incorporating 80 percent improvement into the design of the F-CK-1 Ching-kuo, the indigenous defensive fighter (IDF), the AJT has the aerodynamic characteristics such as low air resistance and high angle of attack and uses F124-200TW, an engine jointly produced by AIDC and ITEC. Moreover, the flight characteristics were enhanced since the weight was greatly reduced because of significant changes in the air structure and increased utilization of composite materials.
To meet ROCAF’s requirement of the AJT, the cross-section of the wing was modified to lower the velocity of approach and increase the stability during low-speed flight, which allows the pilots-in-training to acquire the basic flight skills and develop basic combat skills in a short time.
The parting line of the aircraft was raised to increase the fuel carriage capacity in order to extend flight duration and range. Main landing gears were re-positioned to strengthen taxiing stability. The digital flight control system and multiple avionics were manufactured either by Taiwanese companies or under co-production with foreign partners, which ensure that Taiwan has the ability to upgrade and modify the software and hardware of the aircraft. Furthermore, the AJT and the IDF share many of the system components, allowing the ROCAF to shorten pilot training and reduce logistics and maintenance costs.
Taking into consideration the streamlining of ROCAF’s pilot training program, several aircraft configurations were planned in the design phase. It was finally determined that the AJT would use the IDF as its reference aircraft which would allow the AJT to perform a key role in both advanced flight training and lead-in fighter training. As there are certain systems, subsystems and components common to both the AJT and the IDF, problems of diminishing manufacturing sources, logistics and maintenance are minimized.
The agreement of the AJT project was signed between the ROCAF and the NCSIST on February 7, 2017. AIDC was commissioned by the NCSIST on April 25, 2017 and the aircraft assembly process began on June 1, 2018. The AJT is on schedule to make its first flight in June 2020. The ceremony also featured a 5-minute video highlighting major activities in the 480 days from assembly to the rollout ceremony.
In addition to adopting the colors in the national flag, the geometric shapes at the aircraft’s after section and on its underside demonstrate the spirit of rocketing up and marching forward. The aircraft is to replace the AT-3 and the F-5E/F and will reduce pilot training process from three stages, three types to three stages, two types In addition to satisfying a vital requirement of the ROCAF, the AJT also serves as the cornerstone and manifestation of the Taiwan government’s policy of developing indigenous defensive systems

Boeing and Air New Zealand Finalize Order for Eight 787-10 Dreamliner Jets
PR
- Leading long-range carrier builds future fleet with eight super-efficient 787-10s and includes options to increase number of aircraft to up to 20 Dreamliners
- Largest Dreamliner model offers more seats and unmatched fuel efficiency, and environmental performance
SEATTLE, Sept. 25, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE:BA] and Air New Zealand today finalized an order for eight 787-10 Dreamliner airplanes valued at $2.7 billion at list prices. The carrier, recognized for its long-range flights and global network, will integrate the largest Dreamliner model into its world-class fleet of 787-9 and 777 airplanes from 2022 to strategically grow its business.
The airplane deal, announced in May as a commitment, includes options to increase the number of aircraft from eight up to 20, and substitution rights that allow a switch from the larger 787-10 to smaller 787-9s, or a combination of the two models for future fleet and network flexibility.
"This is an exciting decision for our business and our customers as we deliver on our commitment to grow our business sustainably. With the 787-10 offering around 15 percent more space for both customers and cargo than the 787-9, this investment creates the platform for our future strategic direction and opens up new opportunities to grow," said Air New Zealand Chief Executive Officer Christopher Luxon.
As the largest member of the passenger-pleasing and super-efficient Dreamliner family, the 787-10 is 224 feet long (68 meters) and can seat up to 330 passengers in a standard two-class configuration, about 40 more than the 787-9. Powered by a suite of new technologies and a revolutionary design, the 787-10 set a new benchmark for fuel efficiency and operating economics when it entered commercial service last year. The airplane allows operators to achieve 25 percent better fuel efficiency per seat compared to the previous airplanes in its class.
"Air New Zealand has made very strategic investments in advanced widebody aircraft to build on its status as a leading global carrier connecting the South Pacific with Asia and the Americas. We are very honored that Air New Zealand has selected to add the 787-10 and its unique capabilities to complement its long-haul fleet of 777 and 787-9 airplanes," said Ihssane Mounir, senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing, The Boeing Company.
Air New Zealand was a global launch customer for the 787-9 and today operates 13 of the Dreamliner variant. With another 787-9 on the way and the 787-10 airplanes in the future, the airline's Dreamliner fleet is on track to grow to 22. The new Dreamliner aircraft will replace Air New Zealand's fleet of eight 777-200ERs. Air New Zealand's widebody fleet also includes seven 777-300ERs.
As part of its efforts to maintain an efficient and reliable fleet, Air New Zealand utilizes a number of Boeing Global Services solutions, including Airplane Health Management and Maintenance Performance Toolbox. These digital solutions provide maintenance data and decision support tools that enable aircraft maintenance teams to increase operational efficiency.

Boeing MQ-25 Unmanned Aerial Refueler Completes First Test Flight
press release
ST. LOUIS, Sept. 19, 2019 – Boeing [NYSE: BA] and the U.S. Navy today successfully completed the first test flight of the MQ-25™ unmanned aerial refueler.
The MQ-25 test asset, known as T1, completed the autonomous two-hour flight under the direction of Boeing test pilots operating from a ground control station at MidAmerica St. Louis Airport in Mascoutah, Ill., where the test program is based. The aircraft completed an autonomous taxi and takeoff and then flew a pre-determined route to validate the aircraft’s basic flight functions and operations with the ground control station.
“Seeing MQ-25 in the sky is a testament to our Boeing and Navy team working the technology, systems and processes that are helping get MQ-25 to the carrier,” said Boeing MQ-25 Program Director Dave Bujold. “This aircraft and its flight test program ensures we’re delivering the MQ-25 to the carrier fleet with the safety, reliability and capability the U.S. Navy needs to conduct its vital mission.”
The Boeing-owned test asset is a predecessor to the engineering development model (EDM) aircraft and is being used for early learning and discovery to meet the goals of the U.S. Navy’s accelerated acquisition program. Boeing will produce four EDM MQ-25 air vehicles for the U.S. Navy under an $805 million contract awarded in August 2018.
The MQ-25 will provide the Navy with a much-needed carrier-based unmanned aerial refueling capability. It will allow for better use of the combat strike fighters currently performing the tanking role and will extend the range of the carrier air wing.
“Today’s flight is an exciting and significant milestone for our program and the Navy,” said the Navy’s Unmanned Carrier Aviation (PMA-268) Program Manager Capt. Chad Reed. “The flight of this test asset two years before our first MQ-25 arrives represents the first big step in a series of early learning opportunities that are helping us progress toward delivery of a game-changing capability for the carrier air wing and strike group commanders.”
T1 received its experimental airworthiness certificate from the FAA in September, verifying that the air vehicle meets the agency’s requirements for safe flight. Testing will continue with T1 to further early learning and discovery that advances major systems and software development.

Airbus A400M performs first helicopter air-to-air dry contacts [video]
press release (both pictures and videos were provided with PR)
https://youtu.be/bUGOSAxSqMg
https://youtu.be/vGHnv7zYmh4
Getafe, 24 September 2019 – The Airbus A400M new generation airlifter has successfully achieved its first helicopter air-to-air refueling contacts with an H225M. Over the course of 4 flights, operated in day conditions over the south of France, the A400M performed 51 dry contacts marking a decisive milestone towards its full capability as a tanker. These tests were performed under the coordination of the French “DGA Essais en vol” flight test centre.
The tests, involving no fuel and performed between 1,000 ft and 10,000 ft at flight speeds as low as 105 knots, confirmed the positive results of previous proximity flights conducted at the beginning of 2019. The next step in the flight test program will involve wet contact operations scheduled to take place before the end of 2019 ahead of final certification in 2021.
The flight test campaign also included the first proximity trials between the A400M and an H160 helicopter requested by the French Defence Procurement Agency (DGA) in the frame of the feasibility study for the Guépard (future military multirole helicopter for the French armed forces). Tests were performed successfully.
The photo above shows the A400M performing dry contacts with an H225M operated by Airbus Helicopters.
A400M as a tanker
The A400M is certified to be quickly configured as a tanker, not requiring a dedicated aircraft version. The A400M carries up to 50.8 tonnes (111,600 lb) of fuel in its wings and centre wing box, without compromising any cargo hold area. Two additional cargo hold tanks can also be installed, providing an additional 5.7 tonnes (11,400 lb) of fuel each. The fuel carried in the extra tanks can be of a different nature to the fuel in the main tanks. This enables the A400M to cater for the needs of different types of receiver aircraft.
As a tanker, the A400M has already demonstrated its ability to refuel fighter receivers such as Eurofighter, Rafale, Tornado or F/A-18 at their preferred speeds and altitudes, and is also able to refuel other large aircraft such as another A400M for buddy refueling, C295 or C-130.
Helicopter air-to-air refuelling is a military tactical operation that involves low speeds and low altitudes. After this achievement and its final certification the A400M will become one of the few tanker aircraft in the world capable of performing such an operation.

The aircraft flew through the rigorous flight testing program, which was completed at Bombardier’s world-class test centre in Wichita, Kansas. The Pearl 15 engine, the latest addition to Rolls-Royce’s exceptional business aviation engine portfolio, received Transport Canada certification recently. The engine, developed at the Rolls-Royce Centre of Excellence for Business Aviation engines in Dahlewitz, Germany, was custom-designed with the most innovative technology – including enhanced aerodynamics, blade cooling and advanced engine health monitoring systems – to power the Global 5500 and Global 6500 aircraft. With the purpose-built engines, advanced wing design and built-in systems redundancy and robustness for which Bombardier Global aircraft are renowned, the aircraft offer superior safety and a smooth ride to its passengers.
Equipped with the revolutionary Bombardier’s Vision Flight Deck, the industry’s leading cockpit, the aircraft offer a comprehensive avionics suite with ergonomics and aesthetics that provide pilots with outstanding comfort and control.
The aircraft offer stunning redesigned cabins with exclusive features that are as innovative as they are luxurious. The Global 5500 and Global 6500 business jets also debut the Nuage chaise, a unique seating innovation that adds new dimensions to the conference suite as a lounge chair that converts into a flat surface for sleeping or banquet-style dining around the table. Bombardier's patented Nuage seat is also exclusive to the new Global aircraft family. With its distinctive technology, the Nuage seat is ideally suited for long-range flights.
These new aircraft build on the success of the Global 5000 and Global 6000 aircraft by offering 500 and 600 nautical miles of additional range, respectively, coupled with an up to 13-per-cent fuel burn advantage, contributing to highly favorable operating costs versus smaller competing aircraft with less range. The Global 5500 aircraft can connect Sao Paolo and Paris, and Moscow and Los Angeles; the Global 6500 aircraft can connect Hong Kong or Singapore and London, and Toluca and Madrid*.
