Boeing Australia Completes First Loyal Wingman Fuselage

press release

The Boeing [NYSE:BA] Australia team recently completed major fuselage structural assembly for the first Loyal Wingman. The aircraft is one of three prototypes that will be developed as a part of the Loyal Wingman – Advanced Development Program in partnership with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF).

"This is an exciting milestone for the development program, and the Australian aerospace industry, as we progress with production of the first military aircraft to be developed in Australia in more than 50 years," said Dr. Shane Arnott, program director, Boeing Airpower Teaming System (ATS).

The Australian team has applied digital engineering and advanced composite materials to achieve cost and agility goals for the 38-foot (11.7-meter) aircraft, which is designed to use artificial intelligence in teaming with other manned and unmanned platforms.

"The partnership with Boeing is key to building our understanding of not just the operational implications for these sorts of vehicles, but also making us a smart customer as we consider options for manned-unmanned teaming in the coming decade," said Air Commodore Darren Goldie, RAAF Director-General of Air Combat Capability. "Boeing is progressing very well with its development and we look forward to seeing the final product in the coming months."

Arnott said Australian Industry participation had been critical to the program's rapid development, with a 16-strong Australian industry team making key deliveries to date including:

-BAE Systems Australia, who have delivered hardware kits including flight control computers and navigation equipment;

-RUAG Australia, who have delivered the landing gear system

-Ferra Engineering, who have delivered precision machine components and sub-assemblies to support the program; and

-AME Systems, who have delivered wiring looms to support the vehicle.

This first Loyal Wingman prototype will provide key lessons toward production of the ATS, which Boeing Australia is developing for the global defense market. Customers will be able to tailor ATS sensors and systems based on their own defense and industrial objectives.

The next major milestone will be weight on wheels, when the fuselage structure moves from the assembly jig to the aircraft's own landing gear to continue systems installation and functional testing. The aircraft is expected to complete its first flight this year.

PC-24 Rough Field Certification Campaign Brought to a Successful Conclusion

video

Pilatus obtained certification for take-offs and landings on grass, wet earth and snow, making the PC-24 the world's most flexible business jet ever.

Pilatus has now obtained full rough field certification for the PC-24 Super Versatile Jet. Certification for operations on dry sand and gravel was delivered in 2018. A comprehensive post-certification test campaign was conducted throughout 2019 to certify the Super Versatile Jet for operation on unpaved runways and in differing conditions. With immediate effect, all PC-24s may now also be operated on wet and snow-covered unpaved runways.

Twice as many airports – just with the PC-24

The PC-24 was developed for use on rough field from the outset. Its outstanding performance on short and unpaved runways opens up an amazing degree of flexibility and new possibilities. Compared to other business jets currently on the market, the PC-24 provides access to almost twice as many airports worldwide. More airports mean more options – taking operators to their destinations faster, with valuable time-savings.

Pilatus Chairman Oscar J. Schwenk adds: ‟I'm delighted to note the successful completion of these comprehensive tests. Our PC-24 has proven that it is capable of flying the full range of missions for which it was developed. The Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia and operators in North America or Africa already use rough field runways on a regular basis, proving just how unique the PC-24 is – that sort of capability is only available with the Pilatus Super Versatile Jet!"

Tests across the world

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) requires tests for the certification of take-off and landing capability to be carried out on different runways. After careful evaluation of local conditions, tests were made at locations across America and Europe.

The excellent runway in Goodwood, England was selected for the tests on dry grass. Further tests on grass runways were carried out at Kunovice in the Czech Republic, at Poitiers in France and at Duxford, England. At Woodbridge, England, complex conditions were reproduced in part in order to meet all test specifications for take-offs and landings on wet dirt surfaces. The PC-24 was also flown in North America: tests on snow-covered gravel runways were performed at Kuujjuaq in Canada.

The Spanish Air Force Buys PC-21 Training System Including 24 Aircraft

press release

The Spanish Air Force, Ejército del Aire, is the third European air force to opt for the Swiss-produced PC-21, the Next Generation Trainer. Pilatus has committed to delivering a total of 24 PC-21s to Spain. The single-engine turboprop trainer aircraft will replace the Casa C-101 jet trainers used since 1980.

The Ministry of Defence was looking for a new, highly efficient training platform to provide advanced training for Spain's future military pilots tasked with protecting future generations. After a long and extremely professional evaluation, Pilatus beat several prestigious competitors to win the tender with the PC-21. The contract, which is worth over 200 million euros, was signed yesterday evening with the Spanish Dirección General de Armamento y Material (DGAM). Comprising an integrated training system, the order includes simulators developed and produced by Pilatus, spare parts and logistics support in addition to the PC-21 aircraft.

Oscar J. Schwenk, Chairman of Pilatus, is enthusiastic about this major order from Spain: "As a small Swiss aircraft manufacturer I'm delighted at our repeated success in winning through over large, international competitors. This result is proof that, with our PC-21, we can deliver the very best training system in the world."

Pilot training starts in 2021

The PC-21 will provide Spain with the most advanced training system currently on offer, and will also deliver a cost-effective, ecologically viable training platform. Experience with existing PC-21 customers has shown that the cost of training for a military pilot can be reduced by over 50 percent with the PC-21. These single-engine turboprop aircraft require much less fuel than any comparable jet trainer.

Oscar J. Schwenk commented further: "I'm delighted to see us win a new air force to add to our existing customer portfolio. We shall provide Ejército del Aire with the first-class customer service they are entitled to expect from Pilatus. Bienvenidos a Pilatus y muchas gracias por elegir el PC-21 – viva España!"

About the PC-21 success model

For years, people believed that single-engine turboprops would never replace jet trainers. But with defence budgets coming under increasing pressure, air forces are looking for new ways of managing and maintaining their complex systems in mission-ready condition. Seeking to support this change, Pilatus developed performance-related services specifically tailored to the PC-21 Training System. The goal is to ensure an affordable product to match the performance criteria defined by air force customers. That is achieved by providing a highly sophisticated and integrated service package in line with current air force requirements.

Prestigious air forces around the world have chosen the cost-effective, highly efficient training platform created by Pilatus. They are the proof that the PC-21 is the training system of the future. Since 2006, with the order for Spain, Pilatus has already sold 235 PC-21s to nine air forces – including Singapore, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates, France and Australia.

A bioinspired Separated Flow wing provides turbulence resilience and aerodynamic efficiency for miniature drones

Abstract

Small-scale drones have enough sensing and computing power to find use across a growing number of applications. However, flying in the low–Reynolds number regime remains challenging. High sensitivity to atmospheric turbulence compromises vehicle stability and control, and low aerodynamic efficiency limits flight duration. Conventional wing designs have thus far failed to address these two deficiencies simultaneously. Here, we draw inspiration from nature's small flyers to design a wing with lift generation robust to gusts and freestream turbulence without sacrificing aerodynamic efficiency. This performance is achieved by forcing flow separation at the airfoil leading edge. Water and wind tunnel measurements are used to demonstrate the working principle and aerodynamic performance of the wing, showing a substantial reduction in the sensitivity of lift force production to freestream turbulence, as compared with the performance of an Eppler E423 low–Reynolds number wing. The minimum cruise power of a custom-built 104-gram fixed-wing drone equipped with the Separated Flow wing was measured in the wind tunnel indicating an upper limit for the flight time of 170 minutes, which is about four times higher than comparable existing fixed-wing drones. In addition, we present scaling guidelines and outline future design and manufacturing challenges.

Airlander (hybrid air vehicle half blimp half aircraft) will be hybrid-electric

press release

HAV announces Airlander 10 hybrid-electric engine option

Facing today's simultaneous challenges of connecting more and emitting less, Hybrid Air Vehicles remains committed to our vision: to be the future of zero-carbon aviation.

The technology at the heart of the Airlander 10 creates significant efficiency in flight. In the base configuration of the aircraft, which has four combustion engines, Airlander 10 will deliver up to 75% reduction in emissions over comparable aircraft in a wide range of roles. No other aircraft is able to deliver Airlander 10's capability while simultaneously reducing emissions by this degree. We remain, however, committed to delivering the most efficient aircraft for all of our customers' needs.

To that end, we are currently developing electric engines with the goal to deliver a hybrid-electric Airlander 10 within five years. This will provide a 90% reduction on emissions over other aircraft in mobility and logistics applications while offering operational flexibility in service. For example, this aircraft will be able to transport up to 90 passengers over a maximum all-electric range of 350km. The hybrid-electric mode significantly extends this range.

Having flown a prototype Airlander that had emissions up to 75% lower than other large aircraft, we set out our vision for Airlander to be the future of zero-carbon aviation. Today, it is no longer necessary to explain to people why decarbonizing aviation is important. We believe that our ability to offer our customers ultra-low emissions aircraft in standard and hybrid-electric configurations by 2025 is a very strong statement of our commitment and a major step to achieving this goal.

Tom Grundy CEO

During all-electric operation, Airlander 10 will cruise at 50 knots, with the ability to cruise at up to 70 knots in hybrid-electric mode. On an example route such as Liverpool to Newcastle (approximately 200km), 90 passengers could travel point to point in two hours with 90% lower emissions than other aircraft, while also enjoying a quiet, comfortable cabin.

With work in progress to develop electric motors through our E-HAV1 programme and assessment underway for control systems and power storage solutions, our technology and engineering team is ready to deliver a hybrid-electric configuration for Airlander 10 within the next five years.

Embraer and SkyWest, Inc. Sign Contract for 20 E175 Jets

press release

Embraer and SkyWest, Inc. (NASDAQ: SKYW) signed a firm order for 20 E175 jets in a 76-seat configuration. The order has a value of USD 972 million, based on 2019 list prices, and is already included in Embraer's 2019 fourth-quarter backlog. Deliveries are expected to begin in the second half of 2020.

"Embraer and SkyWest enjoy a partnership marked by a longstanding history of service to the mainline carriers, and we relish the opportunity to break new ground," said Charlie Hillis, Vice President, Sales & Marketing, North America, Embraer Commercial Aviation. "Today, we are excited to announce that these 20 new aircraft will be the first E-Jets operated by SkyWest within the American Airlines network."

"We're pleased to continue advancing our position in the industry with this latest order of new Embraer aircraft," said Chip Childs, President and Chief Executive Officer of SkyWest, Inc. "We appreciate the long-standing partnership with Embraer and look forward to operating this outstanding aircraft for all four of our mainline partners."

Embraer's relationship with SkyWest dates back to 1986, when SkyWest began operating the EMB 120 Brasilia turboprop. With this additional order for the E175, SkyWest has purchased more than 180 aircraft of this model since 2013 alone.

Embraer is the world's leading manufacturer of commercial jets with up to 150 seats. The Company has 100 customers from all over the world operating the ERJ and E-Jet families of aircraft. For the E-Jets program alone, Embraer has logged almost 1,800 orders and 1,500 deliveries, redefining the traditional concept of regional aircraft.

The Phenom 300E becomes the first single-pilot jet to reach Mach 0.80 and receives performance, comfort and technology enhancements

press release

Embraer's Phenom 300 series, the most successful business jet of the past decade, is made even better with enhancements in performance, comfort and technology. In the Embraer tradition of constantly striving to deliver even more value to customers, the Phenom 300E is now the first single-pilot jet to reach Mach 0.80, offering a quieter cabin and upgrades to its avionics that include predictive windshear and a runway overrun awareness and alerting system, Embraer exclusive intellectual property and the first technology of its kind to be developed and certified in business aviation.

To deliver the best performance in the category, the Phenom 300E now has more speed. The enhanced aircraft is the first single-pilot jet to reach Mach 0.80, making the fastest and longest-ranged single-pilot jet in business aviation even faster. With the new enhancements, the Phenom 300E now delivers a high-speed cruise of 464 knots and a five-occupant range of 2,010 nautical miles (3,724 km) with NBAA IFR reserves.

In terms of comfort, the Phenom 300E now enjoys an even quieter cabin, pilot and co-pilot seat tracking that's close to 40% more, thus providing more legroom in the cockpit and a brand-new premium interior option, known as Bossa Nova. The noise-reduction improvements lower overall in-flight cabin noise, high-frequency noise and significantly reduce noise during boarding.

To deliver unparalleled technology in the category, the Phenom 300E is receiving an avionics upgrade to include a runway overrun awareness and alerting system, predictive windshear, Emergency Descent Mode, PERF, TOLD, FAA Datacom and many others. The runway overrun awareness and alerting system acts as an additional pilot and warns if the aircraft's approach is too steep or too fast, increasing situational awareness. Embraer has patented this technology and is the first OEM in business aviation to develop and certify it. New predictive windshear warns pilots about windshear conditions in advance to help them prepare and maneuver the airplane in order to best minimize adverse conditions. Additionally, the Phenom 300E now comes with a 4G connection via Gogo AVANCE L5.

"Despite the Phenom 300's extraordinary success in the past decade, our team of visionaries is always striving to deliver the ultimate experience to our customers, which means taking an industry-leading aircraft and making it even better, faster and safer," said Michael Amalfitano, President & CEO, Embraer Executive Jets. "Boundless imagination and intelligent engineering gave birth to the Phenom 300E, and it is with that same spirit that we continue enhancing the most popular business jet of the decade."

With these enhancements, the award-winning Bossa Nova Edition interior, originally introduced in 2018 with the debut of the Praetor 500 and Praetor 600, now becomes an available option for the Phenom 300E. The premium interior features carbon fiber materials, sophisticated stitching and piano-black coloring. Inspired by the famous sidewalks of Rio de Janeiro, the custom quilted design is complemented by the tuxedo stitching and color accent details on the divan. Embraer's latest and most advanced interior, the Bossa Nova interior in the Praetor 600 won best design in the 2019 International Yacht & Aviation Awards in Venice (Interior Design/VIP Completion category).

Deliveries of the new Phenom 300E with these enhancements will begin in May of 2020; some features are optional.

Originally launched in 2005, the Phenom 300 series has sustained more than half of the light jet market share since 2012. The aircraft is in operation in more than 30 countries and has accumulated more than one million flight hours. Embraer is continuously investing in the competitiveness of the Phenom 300E with enhancements to its performance, comfort, technology and operational efficiency. In October 2017, the new Phenom 300E was announced and entered service just five months later. The new aircraft will continue to be designated "E" for "Enhanced."

More power and enhanced aerial work capabilities for the H125

press release

Up to +190kg of additional payload coming from engine power release

Anaheim, 28 January 2020 - Airbus Helicopters has announced a major performance increase on the H125 by making full use of the available power of Safran Helicopter Engines' Arriel 2D.

The aircraft's external and internal load lifting capabilities will increase by up to +140 kg, with a large part of it already available at low altitude and low external temperatures, while the hover ceiling OGE will be improved by more than 1,500 ft (up to 12,600 ft). These figures will be further increased when the H125 is equipped with the BLR Fast Fin® tail rotor enhancement and stability system, resulting in a total additional gain of up to +190 kg of external and internal load lifting capabilities and the hover ceiling OGE being improved by +2,300 ft (up to 13,400 ft) compared to the current H125 performance.

This extra power is expected to be certified this summer and will be included as a standard feature on all new-built H125s at no price increase. A retrofit solution will be available for all VEMD- equipped H125s (AS350 B3e) by the end of this year and will only consist of a simple VEMD software upgrade.

The H125 will also provide increased operational simplicity thanks to new options aiming to improve visibility and pilot awareness. All of them are to be showcased on the H125 at Airbus Helicopter's booth: a more compact and simplified instrument panel that reduces its surface area by 40% and incorporates a Garmin G500H TXI touch screen; a remote FLI solution developed by California-based AKV Inc. which will allow to display the main VEMD engine parameters on a smartphone or a tablet via a Bluetooth connection, while keeping external loads in sight, and two additional upper windows greatly improving upward visibility. Show-goers will also see how the Maximum Pilot View Kit, provided by Swiss Rotors Services, boosts the precision and safety of aerial work operations by considerably increasing the field of view of pilots.

"I am very happy to be presenting these new H125 features, which are the result of a continuous dialogue with our customers" declared Axel Aloccio, Head of the Intermediate Single Programme. "The extra power offered by the H125 raises the bar within the single engine helicopter market to reach levels never attained up to now by such platforms and confirms the superiority of the H125 in terms of payload and value for money. And our new options for the aerial work market segment will not only simplify our customer's daily missions, but more importantly, will further increase the safety of these very demanding operations".

With more than 4,000 helicopters in service with about 1,500 global customers, the H125 keeps leading the single engine helicopter market thanks to its high performance and multi-mission capacity. In the last 10 years 630 H125s have been delivered for aerial work, resulting in 74% market share. There are currently about 1,600 H125/AS350 helicopters dedicated to aerial work operations, having accumulated more than 10,6 Million flight hours.

Stay tuned for updates throughout the show by following us on Twitter: @AirbusHeli, @AirbusPress, Instagram @airbus_helicopters and Facebook. Showgoers can also download the Airbus Press news app available for Android and Apple devices to keep up with all of the news during the show.

Airbus C295 successfully performs wet contacts as a tanker

press release

The Airbus C295 tactical airlifter has successfully achieved its first wet contacts during an air-to-air (AAR) tanker flight test campaign. First dry contacts of this flight test took place in December 2019 and were achieved using a closed ramp configuration, 100ft hose and remote vision system. The wet contacts, conducted out of Seville, Spain, took place in January 2020, between one Airbus C295 aircraft in tanker configuration and a Spanish Air Force C295 acting as receiver at flight speeds between 100-130 knots.

In total, the aircraft fitted with the removable AAR kit, performed five wet contacts transferring a total 1.5 tons of fuel. Tests were conducted in day-light conditions.

Captain Gabiña, the Spanish Air Force pilot who participated on the test campaign, said: 'The degree of difficulty in flight test is always high since it involves performing manoeuvers that no one has done before. It should be noted that due to the positive behaviour of the aircraft, the operation has been good and straight forward'.

The flight test campaign also included night flight operations and the successful proximity test in pre-contact position with a Spanish Air Force F18 fighter at a flight speed of 210 knots.

The successful tests will expand the C295's trademark versatility for tactical operations to include refuelling missions for helicopters, transport and fighter aircraft.

Airbus, Air France, Safran, Suez and Total welcome advancements in favour of a sustainable aviation biofuel industry in France

https://www.airbus.com/newsroom/press-releases/en/2020/01/airbus-air-france-safran-suez-and-total-welcome-advancements-in-favour-of-a-sustainable-aviation-biofuel-industry-in-france.html

As the French Government presented the country's ambitions with regards to sustainable aviation fuel, in Toulouse, Airbus, Air France, Safran, Suez and Total acknowledge the launch of a new Call for Expression of Interest (CEI). The ambition presented set forth the conclusions of a working group which included government agencies and industrial partners, all of whom signed the Green Deal[1] in December 2017.

This CEI is a fundamental first step towards the emergence of a sustainable aviation fuel industry in France. It will allow investment projects in second generation sustainable aviation fuel production units in France to be identified, as well as supportive measures and incentives in favour of such investments.

The implementation of an economically viable and lasting industry is key for accelerating the use of sustainable aviation fuel and for reducing net CO2 emissions in air transport. Guaranteeing that all players maintain a competitive edge in a competitive environment and helping to lead the world forward.

For 18 months, industrial entities have been mobilised and are working alongside the government to promote the emergence of a sustainable aviation fuel industry in France. The initiative constitutes the first innovative partnership between public and private players in the industry. It sets forth the conditions for developing lasting industries in France in the following set of recommendations:

  • Mobilise the necessary volume of raw materials for the aviation sector,
  • Ensure that sustainable resources, especially sustainable resources sourced from the circular economy, are used to produce advanced sustainable aviation fuel,
  • Ensure that the industry is economically viable for all actors in the value chain through appropriate incentive schemes,
  • Use existing airport logistics distribution networks,
  • Support and promote production diversification.
The expansion of sustainable aviation fuel constitutes a strategic lever for reducing net CO2 emissions from air transport over a full lifecycle by up to 80% before blend.

[1] Green Deals are initiatives sponsored by the Ministry of Ecological and Inclusive Transition in order to help those carrying out innovative projects which involve the environment and economics, and which contribute to an ecological transition.
