Pentagon official blesses Europe’s push to spend defense money at home

If countries spend 3.5% or 5% on defense, "we understand that you're going to need to indigenize a large fraction of that production," Elbridge Colby, the under secretary of defense for policy, said at a Feb. 13 side event of the Munich Security Conference.

"Otherwise people in Germany or Poland or whatever are going to say: 'Why are we only sending money across the Atlantic?'"

ENGRT II: Airbus and Leonardo Lead EU Next-Generation Rotorcraft Technologies for 2040 Military Autonomy

Airbus Helicopters and Leonardo Helicopters have launched ENGRT II, the next phase of the European Next Generation Rotorcraft Technologies project. The three-year, EU-funded initiative shifts from research and technology to research and development to mature capabilities for Europe's defence needs. Led by Airbus with Leonardo as co-lead, it unites a 53-member consortium across 12 EU states to advance two architectures: the Racer-derived compound rotorcraft and a tilt-rotor concept. The programme also targets AI-driven cognitive cockpits, crewed–uncrewed teaming, secure cyber-communications, and resilient logistics, aiming to replace and augment fleets after 2040 and maintain Europe's vertical-lift edge.
