Boeing Projects $4 Trillion Market for 33,500 New Airplanes Over Next 20 Years

  • Strong single-aisle market expands even more
  • New twin-aisle aircraft opening new markets
 
PARIS, June 16, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) forecasts a $4 trillion market for new aircraft over the next 20 years with a significant increase in forecasted deliveries. That's according to the Boeing 2011 Current Market Outlook (CMO) released today in Paris. The company's annual commercial aviation market analysis foresees a market for 33,500 new passenger airplanes and freighters between 2011 and 2030.
"The world market has recovered and is now expanding at a significant rate," said Randy Tinseth, vice president of Marketing, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "Not only is there a strong demand for air travel and new airplanes today, but the fundamental drivers of air travel – including economic growth, world trade and liberalization – all point to a healthy long-term demand."

Passenger traffic is expected to grow at 5.1 percent annual rate over the long-term and the world fleet is expected to double by 2030. The single-aisle market will continue to see strong demand around the world and is expected to increase its share of the market. Fleet composition will change significantly by 2030 with single-aisle jets making up 70 percent of the total.

Robust growth in China, India and other emerging markets will lead to a more balanced airplane demand worldwide. China, which has experienced double-digit growth in gross domestic product in recent years, is forecasted to grow at 7 percent per annum, while South Asia, which includes India, is forecast to grow at 7.1 percent.

Asia Pacific is forecasted to need the most new airplanes over the next 20 years and will represent the largest market by value of deliveries at more than $1.5 trillion. The region will account for more than a third of new deliveries worldwide, while the Middle East and Latin America will also continue to show very strong growth.

European and North American carriers will continue to see demand for replacement airplanes as they retire older, less fuel-efficient models. In fact, we predict 94 percent of the European fleet operating in 2030 will have been delivered after 2011, with airplanes that are better for the environment, passengers and the airlines. Forty percent of all new airplanes delivered over the next two decades will be replacements.

The current industry backlog of more than 2,000 twin-aisle aircraft shows the strength of this market segment. The continued growth in long-haul connections will fuel the need for new twin-aisle airplanes due to the increase in new, nonstop markets. With 1,400 deliveries, twin-aisle airplanes will make up 19 percent of the total European deliveries during the forecast period. Liberalization, as well as fragmentation and new mid-size, long-range airplanes such as the 787 Dreamliner, the 777-200LR (long range) and 777-300ER (extended range), will increase the need for intermediate twin-aisle jets. Large aircraft, such as the 747-8 Intercontinental, will make up a market segment valued at $270 billion. While passengers are getting what they want – more frequencies and nonstop service – rising and volatile fuel prices are expected to continue to challenge the industry.

Freighter Fleet Forecast: 2011 to 2030
Boeing projects the world freighter fleet to increase from 1,760 to 3,500 airplanes. Additions to the fleet will include 970 new-production freighters (market value of $250 billion) and 1,990 airplanes converted from passenger models. Large (more than 88.2 tons capacity / 80 tonnes) freighters will account for 690 new-build airplanes. Medium (44.1 to 88.2 tons / 40 to 80 tonnes) freighters will total 280 airplanes. No new standard-body freighters (49.6 tons / less than 45 tonnes) will be required, but there will be 1,240 standard-body conversions. On average over the next 20 years, air cargo traffic will grow at a rate of 5.6 percent.

Boeing 747-8 Freighter to Fly to Paris Air Show on Sustainable Biofuel

  • Washington-to-Paris journey is first transatlantic flight of a biofuel-powered commercial airplane
  • 747-8 Freighter makes its international air show debut after historic flight

SEATTLE, June 16, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) will fly the new 747-8 Freighter to its international air show debut in a doubly historic fashion, flying the airplane across the Atlantic Ocean to the Paris Air Show using a renewable aviation jet fuel – the world's first transatlantic crossing of a commercial jetliner using biologically derived fuel.

Boeing pilots Capt. Keith Otsuka and Capt. Rick Braun and Cargolux Capt. Sten Rossby will fly the airplane with each of the 747-8 Freighter's four GE GEnx-2B engines powered by a blend of 15 percent camelina-based biofuel mixed with 85 percent traditional kerosene fuel (Jet-A). The airplane is scheduled to arrive at Le Bourget Airport Monday at about 5 p.m. Paris local time (15:00 GMT) after a 4,989-mile (8,029 km, 4,335 nautical mile) trip.

"This historic flight is a boost to aviation's efforts to reduce carbon emissions and improve efficiency in all phases of our industry," said 747-8 Vice President and General Manager Elizabeth Lund. "And the 747-8 Freighter fits in well with these efforts by bringing huge improvements in fuel efficiency, lower carbon emissions and less noise."

Camelina, the plant source used to create the biofuel, was grown in Montana and processed by Honeywell's UOP. Boeing does not need to make any changes to the airplane, its engines or operating procedures prior to departure to accommodate biofuel use. Normal flight parameters are being followed and were approved in advance by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.

The airplane will be on static display at the Paris Air Show June 21 and 22. It is scheduled to leave the air show the evening of June 22 and fly to Cargolux headquarters at Luxembourg for a two-day visit. Cargolux is scheduled to take delivery of the first 747-8 Freighter to enter service this summer.

The 747-8 Freighter is the new high-capacity 747 that will give cargo operators the lowest operating costs and best economics of any freighter airplane while providing enhanced environmental performance.

Aviation biofuel use

ASTM International, the global standards body that oversees the jet fuel specification in North America, recently approved an amendment to the current specification to include fuels from bio-based sources. The revised jet-fuel specification will be published later this year, allowing use of the new fuels without special approval. Industry efforts will shift to ramping up production and work to ensure the sustainability of fuel sources being considered.

Plant-based biofuels provide a net reduction in carbon due to absorption of CO2 during the growth phase, and are a key element of aviation's strategy for achieving carbon-neutral growth beyond 2020. Boeing, Honeywell's UOP, GE and other industry leaders have worked for the past five years on sustainable aviation biofuel development including commercial and military flight test programs, laboratory and ground-based jet engine performance testing to ensure compliance with stringent aviation fuel performance and safety requirements.

Camelina, an energy crop grown in rotation with dry wheat, is one of the biofuel sources identified during a comprehensive regional analysis conducted by Boeing and others in the Northwestern U.S. as part of the Sustainable Aviation Fuels Northwest project (www.safnw.com). Boeing is guiding regional biofuel assessments in Australia/New Zealand, Mexico, United Arab Emirates and China to identify potential fuel sources that don't compete with food or fresh water resources or contribute to deforestation. The end goal is to establish regional supply chains that produce aviation biofuel for blending with Jet-A, reducing the industry's dependency on fossil fuels.

Boeing to Boost 737 Production Rate to 42 Airplanes per Month in 2014

SEATTLE, June 15, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) announced today it will increase the production rate for its Next-Generation 737 to 42 airplanes per month. Once implemented in the first half of 2014, the 737 program expects to build on average two 737s each workday and nearly 500 airplanes each year.

Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Jim Albaugh said the market outlook for single-aisle jetliners is strong and growing.

"Customers are demanding our Next-Generation 737 at an unprecedented rate," Albaugh said. "New performance improvements and enhanced passenger comfort features have driven home the value equation for our customers."

Albaugh emphasized the popularity of Boeing's new passenger comfort features, noting that since its introduction in May 2010, the new Boeing Sky Interior is specified on more than 80 percent of new 737 orders.

737 Program Vice President and General Manager Beverly Wyse said the goal with this rate increase is to continue meeting customer demand with an innovative airplane that provides strong performance and value.

"We have worked very closely with our supply chain and our world-class manufacturing team to ensure we can increase rate in an efficient and responsible fashion," Wyse said. "We believe that many of the capital investments and production system changes made for 38 airplanes per month will already position us to build 42," Wyse said. "We are very well situated for this rate increase."

The 737 program currently produces 31.5 airplanes per month and expects to go to 35 per month in early 2012, 38 per month in second quarter 2013, and then to 42 per month in the first half of 2014.

The rate increase announced today is not expected to have a material impact on 2011 financial results.

Boeing's highly efficient and reliable 737 family has become the best-selling airliner in history. More than 280 customers have placed more than 8,880 orders for the single-aisle airplane – including more than 5,750 orders of the Next-Generation 737. Boeing currently manages a backlog of more than 2,100 of the 737 family.

Northrop Grumman's Firebird Successfully Uses Three Eyes and Fourth Sensor Payload (w/video)




ntelligence-Gathering Sensors Can be Installed, Used in Matter of Minutes

SAN DIEGO, June 14, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) Firebird intelligence-gathering air system successfully used three different high-definition video sensors and an electronics support payload all at the same time – a future capability sought by the U.S. military that's available today.

The flight marks the first time three electro-optical, infrared sensors have been used simultaneously with a fourth payload on an aircraft. This capability was proven on May 20 at Fort Huachuca, Ariz., with additional missions through June 3 as part of the U.S. Joint Forces Command's Empire Challenge 2011 exercise.

"Firebird's universal interface is what makes this all possible," said Rick Crooks, director of special projects and Firebird program manager for Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems. "It's very similar to plugging a memory stick into a computer – it's automatically recognized without needing to load new software. With this 'plug-and-play' technology we can place many different sensors on Firebird and operate them in a matter of minutes."

Crooks explained that this capability is important to warfighters because it significantly reduces the time needed to replace sensors so they can ready Firebird quickly for different missions. The flight team can install the three high-definition full-motion video (HD FMV) sensors along with a communications payload in less than an hour.

During Empire Challenge, the Firebird team also showed how real-time HD video could be sent to different locations including a ground control station, remote terminals, a tablet computer and a cellular phone. Control of the sensors was done independently through the ground station and remote terminals.

"Not only can soldiers on the ground and aircraft crews see the video and data, but they also control the sensors independently," said Crooks. "This two-way control really puts the power of Firebird's systems in their hands. By being able to go through a remote terminal or a cellular phone, we've made it possible for soldiers on the front-line to more effectively use these systems to gain the edge they need."

The three HD FMV sensors were supplied by FLIR Systems, with the fourth payload being the Northrop Grumman-produced Common Signals Intelligence System 1500 that provided an electronics support and direction finding capability.                

The team was able to switch between eight different sensors during the exercise. To date, Firebird has used 15 different intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance sensor payloads.

Northrop Grumman leads the Firebird program with teammate Scaled Composites – the aircraft innovation firm founded by famed engineer Burt Rutan who designed SpaceShipOne, the first privately funded spacecraft.

Firebird was intentionally designed to be flown as a manned or unmanned air system. It can be easily modified for both flight modes.

Boeing to Build 10 C-17 Airlifters for Indian Air Force

LONG BEACH, Calif., June 15, 2011 -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] today announced that India's Ministry of Defence has signed an agreement with the U.S. government to acquire 10 Boeing C-17 Globemaster III airlifters. The Foreign Military Sale -- approved by the U.S. Congress in May 2010 -- establishes India as the C-17's largest international customer.

According to the agreement, India will take delivery of its C-17s in 2013 and 2014.

"The C-17 will elevate India's leadership in the region," said Dinesh Keskar, president, Boeing India. "With its tactical and strategic capabilities, the C-17 fulfills India's needs for military and humanitarian airlift. The important transaction reaffirms our close relationship of several decades with India and also highlights our commitment to the strategic partnership between the two countries."

A tactical and strategic airlifter, the C-17 can land combat-ready troops in remote locations or airdrop them directly where needed. The C-17's ability to back up allows it to operate on narrow taxiways and congested ramps. With a maximum payload of 164,900 pounds (74,797 kg), the C-17 can take off and land in 3,000 feet (914.4 m) or less.

Boeing has delivered 232 C-17s worldwide, including 22 with international customers. The U.S. Air Force -- including active National Guard and Reserve units -- has taken delivery of 210 C-17s. Other customers include the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force, the Qatar Emiri Air Force, the Canadian Forces, the Royal Australian Air Force, the 12-member Strategic Airlift Capability initiative of NATO and Partnership for Peace nations, and the United Arab Emirates Air Force and Air Defence.

Boeing to Make Job Reductions at Wichita Facility

Maintenance, Modifications & Upgrades reductions to occur through 2011

WICHITA, Kan., June 14, 2011 -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] today announced a reduction of approximately 225 jobs at Boeing Defense, Space & Security's Maintenance, Modifications & Upgrades (MM&U) facility in Wichita. The reductions are a result of some Wichita programs coming to an end and other adjustments in aircraft maintenance cycles.

"This reduction of positions is necessary to help our business reduce cost and improve productivity," said Mark Bass, MM&U vice president and general manager. "Our goal is to remain affordable and competitive, and ensure future growth in the airplane modification business in Wichita."

The reductions will take place through the remainder of this year through layoffs, normal attrition and placements elsewhere within the company. The first phase of notices will be sent to approximately 60 employees on June 17.

Boeing Human Resources professionals will help displaced workers with resume writing, interviewing, and other job-hunting assistance.

The Boeing Defense, Space & Security facility in Wichita specializes in modifying commercial derivative aircraft for military or government operations. By offering different levels of experience within each zone, airlines would be able to achieve price differentials and give more people access to the benefits of air travel with minimal environmental impact.

Showcasing the innovative interior design, Charles Champion, Airbus Executive Vice President Engineering, said: "Our research shows that passengers of 2050 will expect a seamless travel experience while also caring for the environment. The Airbus Concept Cabin is designed with that in mind, and shows that the journey can be as much a voyage of discovery as the destination. Whichever flight experience is chosen, the passenger of 2050 will step out of the Airbus Concept Cabin feeling revitalised and enriched."

More than 90 percent of Airbus' annual research & development investment of over €2 billion has environmental benefits for current and future aircraft. For example, due to advances in technologies the concept cabin will be 100% recyclable. It will have self-cleaning materials made from sustainable plant fibres which reduce waste and maintenance and will harvest passenger body heat to power cabin features.
Such technologies are already being developed and, while they may not be seen in the exact same manner as in the Airbus Concept Plane and Cabin, some of them could feature in future Airbus aircraft programmes.
Visitors to Le Bourget International Airshow in Paris will also be able to experience the Airbus' Future of Flight film, a 360 planetarium movie – a vision of the transformations in air transport between now and the middle of the century which not only focuses on aircraft designs and innovations, but also addresses passenger expectations. The movie will be part of the planetarium's programme at the Musee de l'Air et de l'Espace from 20 – 26 June.

Eurocopter innovation takes to the skies at this month’s Paris Air Show: the X3 hybrid demonstrator and EC175 will make their public flight debut


Eurocopter's commitment to innovation will be showcased at the 2011 Paris Air Show, where the company's high-profile participation is to include the first public flight presentations of its X3 hybrid demonstrator and the new EC175 helicopter.

The Eurocopter presence at Le Bourget Airport also will comprise displays of its enhanced EC145 T2 and AS350 B3e helicopters; an AS565 Panther outfitted with the Stand Alone Weapon System (SAWS); the EC135 configured for law enforcement and customs missions; and a version of the EC175 tailored for search and rescue operations.

"Eurocopter applies innovation every day in expanding the boundaries of flight, and the X3 is an excellent example of how we are preparing for the future," said Lutz Bertling, Eurocopter's President & CEO. The X3 demonstrator is powered by a five-blade main rotor system and two propellers on short-span fixed wings – a combination that delivers excellent vertical takeoff and landing capabilitiesof a helicopter, along with aircraft-type fast cruise speeds and maneuverability.

Eurocopter anticipates a wide range of utilizations for the X3 hybrid helicopter concept, includinglong-distance search and rescue (SAR) missions, coast guard duties, border patrol missions,passenger transport, offshore operations and inter-city shuttle services.

Also taking part in the Paris Air Show's daily flight program is the EC175, which is being developed by Eurocopter in a joint program with China. This multi-role helicopter is in the seven-metric-ton weight category, fitting into Eurocopter's product range between its AS365 Dauphin and the AS332/EC225 Super Puma aircraft families. The EC175 benefits from a mix of proven and advanced technologies, providing excellent performance and reliability.

The EC175 presented at Le Bourget is one of two helicopters in the flight test and development program, which foresees the rotary-wing aircraft's certification during the second half of 2011 for deliveries beginning in 2012.

In the Paris Air Show's static display area, Eurocopter's exhibits of its enhanced EC145 T2, AS350 B3e and AS565 MBe represent the evolution strategy being implemented across its product line for improved operating performance, efficiency and maintainability.

The EC145 T2 incorporates new Arriel 2E engines, along with Eurocopter's Fenestron shrouded tail rotor, upgraded main and tail rotor gear boxes, an innovative new digital avionics suite and a 4-axis autopilot.

For Eurocopter's best-selling Ecureuil family, the improved AS350 B3e version is equipped with a more powerful Turbomeca Arriel 2D turboshaft engine, along with a new-generation digital FADEC (Full Authority Digital Engine Control) and an engine data recorder for condition monitoring.

The enhanced AS565 MBe, which offers improved hot and high performance for the Panther helicopter family, will be exhibited at Le Bourget equipped with the Stand Alone Weapon System (SAWS). SAWS is developed by Eurocopter and ATE, with this flexible and adaptable weapons system incorporating mission and targeting systems, two multi-purpose weapon pylons with slaving units, and a choice of weapons loads that includes guns, unguided and guided rockets and missiles.

A special Paris Air Show event is planned by Eurocopter on June 23 to celebrate the three decades of operating excellence with its Ecureuil/AStar helicopter family. Achievements of this product line include more than 5,000 aircraft deliveries, 21 million-plus flight hours, over 1,400 operators worldwide, and flight milestones such as the highest elevation landing on Mount Everest. Cyber security

In order to better anticipate future attacks, these elite teams collaborate closely with the respective government authorities in numerous countries to intercept the threats. They are thus the key elements of international cooperation in the fight against cybercrime.

At the Paris Air Show, Cassidian will demonstrate its experience in protecting highly sensitive and complex networks, and particularly in protecting critical national infrastructures. Indeed, in an increasingly computerised world, critical infrastructures can only operate to maximum effect if they are interconnected and interdependent. The failure of just one link in the chain can have consequences extending far beyond national borders. One of the challenges in the future will therefore be to protect these infrastructures. In its Touch Lab, using a 3D scenario to illustrate critical national infrastructures Cassidian will stage a cyber attack along with its proposed solutions for warding off such threats.

Services

Cassidian Aviation Training Services (CATS, formerly EADS Cognac Aviation Training Services) was founded in 2006 and has since become France’s leading outsourced operator from a technical point of view, providing the French Air Force with equipment and services for pilot training. CATS hosts hundreds of trainees at its technical training sessions and provides the French Air Force with new-generation aircraft and flight simulators which, by June, will have clocked up 100,000 flight hours and 25,000 simulator hours.

At the Paris Air Show, Cassidian will for the first time display a flight demonstration symbolizing Cassidian's fleet and training services. Four training aircraft which could be proposed as a complete training pipeline of a fighter pilot will be presented: initial training (APM 40 Simba), elementary and basic training (Grob 120 A), basic and advanced training (Pilatus PC-21) and advanced training (Aermacchi M346). Cassidian has offered these aircraft, among others, to various European Air Forces for training purposes. One CATS aircraft will also be displayed on the Static with a representative working at the Cognac flight training school.

The skills and know-how of the CATS personnel provide French Air Force pilots with training facilities using state-of-the art, high-performance equipment at a significantly lower cost (approx. 30%).
Based on the success of its services to the French Air Force over the past five years, Cassidian Air Systems will also present its service offerings for fighter and transport pilot training.

Eurofighter Typhoon

Eurofighter Typhoon is also presented at PAS 2011 with daily flight demonstrations of the Italian Air Force in the Flying Display. Eurofighter is the world's most advanced multi-role/swing-role combat aircraft available on the world market. The aircraft has been ordered by six nations (Germany, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, Austria and Saudi Arabia). Boeing Opens New South Carolina 787 Final Assembly Building

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C., June 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Elected officials and representatives from numerous community and business groups, suppliers and subcontractors joined more than 1,000 Boeing [NYSE: BA] employees at its North Charleston, S.C., facility today for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the opening of the new 787 Dreamliner Final Assembly building.

"In this building, our talented Boeing South Carolina teammates are going to assemble the finest, most technologically advanced commercial widebody airplane in history," said Jack Jones, vice president and general manager of Boeing South Carolina. "Airline customers from around the world will come to the South Carolina Lowcountry to take delivery of their 787s, and we look forward to demonstrating what 'made with pride in South Carolina' is all about."

Boeing's Site Services Group and BE&K/Turner, the design-build team, were recognized at the ceremony for their work in bringing construction of the building to completion six months ahead of schedule. In addition the BE&K/Turner team has worked 3.7 million labor-hours without a lost time incident. Employees began moving into the new building in May, and final assembly of the first South Carolina-built 787 Dreamliner will begin later this summer.

"Our partnerships with state and local government and industry have made today possible," said Marco Cavazzoni, vice president and general manager, Final Assembly & Delivery, Boeing South Carolina. "I have a lot of gratitude and respect for every person who has worked hard to help build this new 'house' for us. In April, Boeing announced that thin-film solar laminate panels would be installed on the roof of the Final Assembly building. This solar installation will provide up to 2.6 megawatts of electrical power for the site and is the largest in the Southeast by production capacity.

The new Final Assembly building features 642,720 square feet (59,711 m2) of covered space, roughly the equivalent of 10.5 football fields. More than 18,000 tons (16,329 mt) of steel and one million cubic feet (28,316.8 m3) of concrete were used in its construction. At full production rate, the South Carolina Final Assembly facility will produce three 787 Dreamliners per month.

Boeing Delivers UAE Air Force and Air Defence's 2nd C-17

LONG BEACH, Calif., June 10, 2011 -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] delivered a second C-17 Globemaster III airlifter to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Air Force and Air Defence today at the C-17 program's final assembly facility in Long Beach.

The company is contracted to deliver a total of six C-17s to its UAE customer -- four this year and two in 2012.

"Congratulations to the UAE Air Force and Air Defence on accepting delivery of their second C-17," said Bob Ciesla, Boeing C-17 program manager. "The leadership of the UAE team has resulted in incredible progress on this program. We look forward to continuing to work closely together as we deliver the remainder of the fleet."

The C-17 is the only aircraft capable of performing all of the UAE's airlift requirements -- strategic and tactical, military and humanitarian, brigade airdrop and aeromedical evacuation -- using either standard runways or short, austere airfields. It can transport large payloads across vast ranges without refueling and operate in extremely hot and cold climates. With a full payload of 170,000 pounds, a C-17 can fly 2,400 nautical miles and land in 3,000 feet or less.

"We're proud to say that UAE 02 is mission-ready," said Rich Cutting, Boeing UAE C-17 program manager. "UAE 01, delivered just one month ago, has already logged several missions. And that's what the C-17 is all about -- being ready to perform any mission, anywhere, on a moment's notice."

As a member of the worldwide C-17 "virtual fleet," the UAE's C-17s will be supported through Boeing's C-17 Globemaster III Sustainment Partnership, a proven multinational Performance-Based Logistics program. Through the virtual fleet concept, C-17 customers receive comprehensive worldwide logistics support (spares, support equipment, tech orders, sustaining engineering, and on-site field teams) through use of shared resources across the entire fleet. This highly successful program ensures high levels of mission readiness by providing all C-17 customers -- regardless of fleet size -- cost-effective access to an extensive support program.

There are currently 232 C-17s in service worldwide -- 22 with international customers. The U.S. Air Force, including active Guard and Reserve units, has 210. Other international customers include the Qatar Emiri Air Force, the UK Royal Air Force, the Canadian Forces, the Royal Australian Air Force, and the 12-member Strategic Airlift Capability initiative of NATO and Partnership for Peace nations.

IATA Reveals Checkpoint of the Future

Singapore – The International Air Transport Association (IATA) unveiled the first mock-up of a Checkpoint of the Future, designed to enhance security while reducing queues and intrusive searches at airports, using intelligence-driven risk-based measures.

IATA’s Checkpoint of the Future is being shown to delegates attending the Association’s 67th Annual General Meeting (AGM) and World Air Transport Summit, in Singapore.

“We spend $7.4 billion a year to keep aviation secure. But our passengers only see hassle. Passengers should be able to get from curb to boarding gate with dignity. That means without stopping, stripping or unpacking, and certainly not groping. That is the mission for the Checkpoint of the Future. We must make coordinated investments for civilized flying,” said Giovanni Bisignani, IATA’s Director General and CEO.

The main concepts of the Checkpoint are (1) strengthened security by focusing resources where risk is greatest, (2) supporting this risk-based approach by integrating passenger information into the checkpoint process, and (3) maximizing throughput for the vast majority of travelers who are deemed to be low risk with no compromise on security levels.

“Today’s checkpoint was designed four decades ago to stop hijackers carrying metal weapons. Since then, we have grafted on more complex procedures to meet emerging threats. We are more secure, but it is time to rethink everything. We need a process that responds to today’s threat. It must amalgamate intelligence based on passenger information and new technology. That means moving from a system that looks for bad objects, to one that can find bad people,” said Bisignani.

How does it work?
The Checkpoint of the Future ends the one-size-fits-all concept for security. Passengers approaching the checkpoint will be directed to one of three lanes: ‘known traveler’, ‘normal’, and ‘enhanced security’. The determination will be based on a biometric identifier in the passport or other travel document that triggers the results of a risk assessment conducted by government before the passenger arrives at the airport.

The three security lanes will have technology to check passengers according to risk. “Known travelers” who have registered and completed background checks with government authorities will have expedited access. “Normal screening” would be for the majority of travelers. And those passengers for whom less information is available, who are randomly selected or who are deemed to be an “Elevated risk” would have an additional level of screening.

Screening technology is being developed that will allow passengers to walk through the checkpoint without having to remove clothes or unpack their belongings. Moreover, it is envisioned that the security process could be combined with outbound customs and immigration procedures, further streamlining the passenger experience.

Next Steps
Through the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), 19 governments, including the United States, are working to define standards for a Checkpoint of the Future. IATA is also coordinating closely with the US Department of Homeland Security’s Checkpoint of Tomorrow program which has similar goals.

“We have the ability to move to the biometric scanning and three-lane concept right now. And while some of the technology still needs to be developed, even by just re-purposing what we have today, we could see major changes in two or three years time,” said Bisignani.
