Sensors from CASSIDIAN to protect Korean Utility Helicopters

Cassidian, the defence and security division of EADS, will protect the "Surion" utility helicopter of the Korean Army against missile attacks. Following a multi-million euro contract from Korean Aircraft Industries, Cassidian will deliver a first batch of 24 of its proven AN/AAR-60 MILDS® systems (MILDS = Missile Launch Detection System), until 2013. The order comprises about 100 sensors. Cassidian already supported the Korean company Lig Nex1 in the development of the helicopter's electronic warfare system and delivered 36 sensors during the development phase.

“With more than 7,000 MILDS® sensors in service worldwide, MILDS® has become the standard missile warner for helicopters and wide-body aircraft today”, explains Bernd Wenzler, CEO of Cassidian Electronics. "It has proven its value in protecting air vehicles, particularly against infrared-guided shoulder-fired missiles."

MILDS® is a passive imaging sensor, detecting the UV radiation signature of approaching missiles. The extremely high resolution combined with rapid processing enables very reliable threat identification and virtually eliminates false alarms. 4 to 5 sensors provide optimized coverage and rapid reaction. MILDS® is in service aboard a huge variety of rotary wing and wide body aircraft, including Tiger, NH90, CH-53, CH-47, MI-17 and C-130. A specific fighter version – MILDS F – is in service with the Royal Danish Airforce and Royal Norwegian Airforce F-16 fighters.

The "Surion" has been developed jointly by Korean Aerospace Industries and Eurocopter. It is planned to procure approx. 250 helicopters.

Boeing and ANA Conclude 787 Service Ready Operational Validation . Boeing Demonstrates 787 Dreamliner Capabilities in New Delhi.

TOKYO, July 12, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) and ANA completed the 787 service ready operational validation in Japan over the weekend. As part of the validation, ANA pilots, together with Boeing, flew the Dreamliner on routes from Seattle to Tokyo and Tokyo to four airports across Japan, including Osaka (Itami and Kansai), Okayama and Hiroshima. Maintenance and ground crews from ANA also gained experience with the airplane in the simulated operational environment.
"Giving our team a chance to work with the airplane prior to entry into service was very valuable," said Katsunori Shimazaki, ANA corporate planning senior manager and the airline's leader of the validation. "Our crews are excited to begin operating the first 787 revenue flights later this year."
Teams from ANA and Boeing validated more than a hundred procedures, including towing the airplane, conducting fit checks of ground support equipment, staging electronic flight bag data and completing maintenance actions, among other activities.
"The successful conclusion of this effort further validates our plans for entering the first all-new airplane of the 21st century into service with our launch customer ANA," said Mike Fleming, 787 services and support vice president. "Our teams worked well together and the airplane performed as we expected."
At each airport, hundreds of enthusiasts and reporters gathered to witness the 787's arrival from Tokyo. Combined, several thousand people celebrated the Dreamliner's presence in Japan.
"It has been incredible to see the enthusiasm for the 787 every place we've gone," said Scott Fancher, vice president and general manager of the 787 program. "With its improvements in comfort and environmental performance, passengers are clearly eager to experience the 787 for themselves."
ANA's first scheduled service with the 787 will be either the Tokyo Haneda-Okayama or Tokyo Haneda-Hiroshima route when deliveries begin later this year.
ANA has 55 Dreamliners on order. ANA will deploy the 787 across its route network as an integral part of its strategy to strengthen its position and support its growth and expansion plans.

NEW DELHI, India, July 13 -- The Boeing [NYSE: BA] 787 Dreamliner made its India debut landing at New Delhi International Airport at 11:09 a.m. (IST), arriving from Tokyo. 
"Indian air carriers have recognized the tremendous value the Boeing 787 offers airlines,” said Dinesh Keskar, president Boeing India.
Air India is one of the early customers and has ordered 27 787s. Jet Airways also has ordered 10 Dreamliners. The 787 offers the potential to enhance the revenues of customers due to its passenger appeal and reduction in maintenance costs and fuel burn.
“We look forward to the airplane’s introduction into the fleets of our valued customers in India,” said Keskar. He also mentioned that the 787's visit was a great day in the long history of Boeing's partnership with India.
The airplane will depart for the Mumbai Airport in the evening of July 15 and will fly back to Seattle on the morning of July 16.
The 787 Dreamliner is built by an international team and will provide airlines around the globe with a new level of efficiency in operations, with a 20 percent reduction in fuel use when compared to similar-sized airplanes. The 787 also brings a new level of passenger comfort to travelers including bigger windows and more personal space as well as an environment designed to help them arrive at their destinations feeling refreshed.

Eurocopter delivers the 100th EC225 to Bristow Group

Eurocopter today marked the 100th delivery of an EC225, which was received by Bristow Group Inc. (Bristow) – the leading provider of helicopter services to the offshore energy industry worldwide.

The landmark EC225 was supplied in the oil and gas configuration, but it can be used by Bristow in other missions due to the multi-role helicopter’s designed-in operational flexibility.

Marking the successful association of Eurocopter and this valued customer, today’s EC225 delivery ceremony was held at the helicopter manufacturer’s Marignane, France, facility in the presence of Eurocopter President & CEO Lutz Bertling; Mark Duncan, Bristow’s Senior Vice President – Commercial; and Bristow’s CFO, Jonathan Baliff; who were joined by Wolfgang Schoder, Eurocopter’s Executive Vice President for Programs.

“Eurocopter’s 100th EC225 delivery is a historic moment, and it is particularly appropriate that we are marking this milestone with Bristow, which was the EC225’s launch customer,” Bertling stated. “In addition, this latest delivery of an EC225 to Bristow underscores the helicopter’s capabilities to meet the most demanding requirements,” Bertling added.

Bristow was the launch customer in the Oil & Gas market for the EC225 when the type was introduced into service in 2005 as well as being the launch customer for the AS332L in the early 1980s. More than 50,000 hours have been logged by Bristow’s EC225s, representing approximately one-third of all flight time accumulated by this helicopter type worldwide. Furthermore Bristow and Eurocopter have a Memorandum of Agreement in place for acquisition of the EC175 for which again Bristow will be the launch customer, underscoring the special relationship and partnership between the two companies.

Bristow Group is the leading provider of helicopter services to the worldwide offshore energy industry based on the number of aircraft operated, and is one of two helicopter service providers to the offshore energy industry with global operations. Green Flight Challenge Goes Live!

NASA and CAFE Make Official Announcement at AirVenture 2009

The NASA Innovative Partnerships Program and the Comparative Aircraft Flight Efficiency (CAFE) Foundation announced the CAFE Green Flight Challenge (CGFC), a flight efficiency competition for aircraft that can average at least 100 mph on a 200-mile flight while achieving greater than 200 passenger miles-per-gallon.  The prize for the aircraft with the best performance will be $1.5 million. This is the largest prize ever offered for a general aviation competition. A $150,000 prize for best score by a bio-fueled aircraft is also offered.

The competition is slated for July 2011 at Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport in Santa Rosa, California.  A variety of innovative experimental aircraft that fly with either electricity, solar, bio-fuel or hybrid propulsion are expected to enter.  Several major universities and EAA aircraft builders have already expressed their intention to form teams to compete.

F-35 Jet Blast Deflector Testing Underway at Lakehurst

LAKEHURST, N.J., July 7th, 2011 -- F-35C Lightning II carrier variant aircraft CF-2 is performing Jet Blast Deflector (JBD) tests at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey. The JBD, located behind the catapults aboard aircraft carriers, deflects high energy exhaust from the engine to prevent damage and injury to other aircraft and personnel located in close proximity. JBD testing is one portion of the tests required to ensure the F-35C is compatible aboard the aircraft carrier. Testing continues with varying distances between the aircraft and JBD, and at power settings up to and including maximum afterburner power. CF-2 arrived at Lakehurst on June 25 for JBD tests. EADS broadens its technology licensing reach with new European, Indian agreements

Five agreements signed by EADS have extended the scope of the company’s technology licensing outreach with new industrial partners in India and Europe. These accords were inked during last month’s Paris Air Show and involve a contract with Germany’s Grenzebach Automation GmbH for metallic production technologies based on the friction stir welding solid-state joining process, along with four Letters of Intent (LoIs) with one German and three Indian companies for metallic and composite manufacturing processes.

The agreements were arranged by the EADS Technology Licensing initiative, which is managed by EADS’ Corporate Technology Office and has the company’s top management support in offering a full range of leading-edge technologies that are proven, mature and available today.

Several of the accords will benefit from engineering and application studies organised by the EADS Technology Licensing initiative, which provides assistance to industry partners in identifying business cases and tailoring a technology offer that is best adapted to customers’ specific needs. This supplemental engineering support is offered to facilitate a smooth transfer of the licensed technology into customers’ products and manufacturing processes.

“Our new agreements underscore EADS’ ability to provide highly valuable technologies in both metallic and composites production, which will be applied to the aerospace industry as well as other sectors such as automotive and industrial equipment,” said Wulf Hoeflich, who leads the EADS Technology Licensing initiative. The licensing contract provides Grenzebach Automation GmbH with access to EADS Innovation Works’ technologies for the friction stir welding solid-state joining process, including utilisation of EADS patented tools that provide a high-quality weld surface and eliminate the requirement for post-weld machining.

This agreement’s scope addresses the application of friction stir welding technologies in production of electronic products by Grenzebach Automation, which is part of the Grenzebach group of companies with production facilities worldwide.

The Letters of Intent with India underscore the country’s ambition to evolve as a strong aerospace player, which has become a priority after the Indian government’s step to privatize the aerospace sector. “We now see a build-up in the Indian supply chain, which wants to become more capable and innovative – not only in supporting Indian aircraft programmes, but in the export market as well,” Hoeflich added. The Letters of Intent signed at the Paris Air Show were with:


  • India’s Dynamatic Technologies Limited, for metallic manufacturing processes such as friction stir welding, as well as EADS patented composites production technologies. This will be supported by an EADS engineering services package.
  • Maini Precision Products Pvt. Ltd of India for metallic and composites technologies, backed by an EADS engineering services package.
  • Tata Advanced Materials Limited, covering a broad range of composites and related manufacturing processes, including the EADS-developed and patented Vacuum Assisted Process (VAP) and protective coatings for composite tools. An engineering services package is included in the scope of this Letter of Intent.
  • Brötje Automation GmbH of Germany, for light metal alloys, friction stir welding and automation in composites manufacturing.

Lynx World Speed Record Helicopter Restored 25 Years On

After a four year restoration programme undertaken by a team of AgustaWestland apprentices, the record breaking Westland Lynx helicopter, which is still the official holder of the helicopter World Speed Record, was today unveiled by AgustaWestland’s CEO Bruno Spagnolini and apprentices to employees gathered at AgustaWestland’s Yeovil factory.


After the unveiling Bruno Spagnolini, CEO, said “To have held the world helicopter speed record for 25 years highlights what an outstanding achievement it was by all those involved in the project and the development of the rotor blade technology that was key to the successful record attempt. The apprentices are to be also congratulated on performing an excellent restoration of this historically important helicopter, it is their skills and knowledge that will help keep AgustaWestland at the very forefront of rotorcraft technology for the next 25 years.” Following its World Record breaking flight in 1986 the aircraft went on to become the test bed for CTS800-4N engines and was heavily modified before finally being retired from development flying in 1991. In January 1995 the helicopter was donated to the Helicopter Museum where it was preserved and put on public display, then in 2007 AgustaWestland agreed to undertake the restoration of the aircraft back to its World Speed Record configuration. The aircraft returned to Yeovil, where it was originally built, and the team of apprentices set about the major task of restoring the aircraft to as close a condition as possible to that on its record breaking flight.


The team of AgustaWestland apprentices have spent over 25,000 hours researching the configuration of the aircraft, de-modifying the aircraft, locating the original parts wherever possible, sourcing missing parts, rebuilding the aircraft and finally repainting it in its distinctive world speed record colours with all the logos of those companies that assisted the original project. The 11th August 2011 marks the 25th anniversary of the Westland Lynx helicopter setting a new world helicopter speed record of 249.1 mph (400.87 kph). The Lynx helicopter, registered G-LYNX, flew a 15km course across the Somerset Levels at 500 ft on a calm hazy evening back in 1986 with Chief Test Pilot Trevor Egginton at the controls and Derek Clews, Flight Test Engineer alongside. The average speed achieved over two runs was 249.1 mph (400.87 kph), beating the record held by a modified Mil “Hind” helicopter by over 20 mph (32 kph).

La Cátedra EADS de Estudios Aeronáuticos entrega los premios a las mejores tesis y proyectos fin de carrera

El premio a la mejor tesis doctoral ha sido para Luis Távara. La distinción a la mejor tesis de fin de máster ha sido para la realizada por Israel García. Ambos trabajos estudian la aparición de grietas en materiales compuestos y su posterior propagación. Por último, en la categoría de mejor proyecto de fin de carrera han sido galardonados un trabajo que también analiza cuestiones relacionadas con materiales compuestos y otro sobre la integración y control de quadrotores en vehículos no tripulados (UAVs), firmados por Carlos Arellano y Diego Hinojosa, respectivamente.

Esta segunda edición de los galardones académicos convocados por la Cátedra EADS de Estudios Aeronáuticos de Sevilla ha contado con una dotación de 7.500 euros, de los que 3.000 corresponden a la mejor tesis doctoral. La mejor tesis fin de máster, así como los mejores proyectos de fin de carrera han recibido cada uno una dotación de 1.500 euros.

Los premios han sido entregados por el director del complejo industrial San Pablo de Airbus Military y miembro de la Comisión de la Cátedra EADS, Jesús Espinosa, y la responsable de EADS para las relaciones con la Universidad de Sevilla, Beatriz García.

Jesús Espinosa ha declarado tras la entrega de estas distinciones: “La excelencia es a un tiempo el fin que perseguimos en Airbus Military y lo que la Cátedra EADS ha reconocido en las tesis y proyectos premiados. Estamos comprometidos con la investigación, el desarrollo y la innovación, que comienzan en la formación. Con estas distinciones, Airbus Military quiere animar a todos los alumnos de las distintas ingenierías a tener en la excelencia un objetivo fundamental de sus carreras profesionales”.

La ceremonia de entrega de estas distinciones ha tenido lugar en la Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de la Universidad de Sevilla.

Airbus Military tanker for RAF performs first contacts with Tornado

An Airbus Military A330 MRTT Future Strategic Transport Aircraft (FSTA) for the UK´s Royal Air Force has successfully completed its first contacts with a Tornado fighter.

The two aircraft performed a series of dry contacts, by day and night, in late June / early July during a programme to formally qualify the Tornado to refuel from the FSTA in operational service. Wet contacts, in which fuel is actually passed from the tanker to the receiver, will commence shortly.

During sorties conducted from RAF Boscombe Down with the support of Qinetiq, the Tornado executed contacts with the A330 MRTT´s underwing hose-and-drogue pods at altitudes between 10,000ft and 30,000ft and speeds of 250-325kt

Eurocopter and PT. Dirgantara Indonesia Renew Teaming Framework Agreement to extend its partnership in Indonesia

Witnessed by French Prime Minister François Fillon in Jakarta, Eurocopter and PT. Dirgantara Indonesia (also known as Indonesian Aerospace) signed today a new teaming framework agreement, to continue the successful partnership which consists of industrial co-operation as well as marketing of Eurocopter products to Indonesian governmental entities.

The first teaming framework agreement was signed between Eurocopter and PT. Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) back in 2006. The renewal of the partnership will see a continuation of the joint effort for a further five years, as representatives from both organizations put pen to paper in a signing ceremony today in Jakarta, in the presence of French Prime Minister, François Fillon, who was on an official visit in Indonesia.

Signing for PTDI is its President Director, Budi Santoso. Henri Stell, Eurocopter Deputy Vice President Sales and Customer Relations (Asia Pacific), was present to sign on behalf of Dominique Maudet, Eurocopter Executive Vice-President Global Business & Services. The partnership between Eurocopter and PTDI began some 35 years ago – when Eurocopter was then known as Aérospatiale and MBB; and PTDI known as Nurtanio – with the licensed production of 123 BO105, 11 Puma SA330 and 19 Super Puma AS332 helicopters. The partnership was further strengthened in 2008 when the two companies set up an assembly line for the Super Puma MK helicopter airframes in Bandung, Indonesia, thereby successfully integrating PTDI into Eurocopter's global supply chain.

The agreement renewal signalled bigger things to come for both parties. Henri Stell pointed out that "both Eurocopter and PTDI can capitalize on each other's strengths – PTDI's strong local insights, network and solid infrastructure; and Eurocopter's global strategy and network coupled with having the world's widest helicopter product range – to secure upcoming local procurement programmes and grow the business together."

Agreeing with Henri Stell, PTDI President Director Budi Santoso noted that "Indonesia has been viewed as one of the most dynamic helicopter markets in Southeast Asia not only due to its vast land area and island archipelago, but also to the fact that there are many ageing helicopter fleets that would need replacement in the coming years." He added, "Together with Eurocopter, our synergy will ensure that we are in a good position to bid for these contracts when the opportunities arise.

Al pago de las Acciones Ordinarias de Vector Aerospace depositadas en la Oferta, los señores Donald K. Jackson, F. Robert Hewett, Stephen K. Plummer, Kenneth C. Rowe y Colin D. Watson han dimitido de sus cargos como consejeros de Vector Aerospace y les han sucedido los señores Lutz Bertling, Dieter John, Derek Sharples y Olivier Lambert como representantes del Oferente. OVO 04 supera los 300 vuelos de demostración

El pasado mes de junio Virtual Fly expuso su OVO 04, el simulador de vuelo con cabina en movimiento, en el Cannes Air Show y Aero Expo UK, cerrando así su calendario de ferias previas al verano.

En total, durante las 4 ferias a las que ha asistido OVO 04 (Friedrichshafen, Ódena, Cannes y Sywell), se han realizado más de 300 vuelos, recibiendo una valoración media por parte de los usuarios de 8,78 sobre 10.

Gracias a las encuestas realizadas se han podido obtener no sólo las puntuaciones si no también los comentarios necesarios para desarrollar e implementar los retoques finales que hacen del OVO 04 un dispositivo con el equilibrio perfecto entre realismo, prestaciones y precio.

OVO 04 ha conseguido en tan solo unos meses obtener comentarios de instructores, pilotos y empresarios que lo reconocen como un proyecto novedoso, altamente esperado y que satisface los objetivos para los que se ha diseñado: entrenar pilotos, entretener aficionados y facilitar la entrada a la aeronáutica al resto de interesados… todo ello con una rentabilidad / hora imbatible desde el punto de vista operativo.

Además, desde hace una semanas ya es posible visitar el Show Room de Virtual Fly en el que está disponible el OVO 04 mejorado tras su ronda de ferias europeas y en el que está integrado también la Estación de Instrucción.

Eurocopter firma un acuerdo destinado a equipar los helicópteros militares NH90 TTH alemanes para misiones avanzadas de evacuación sanitaria con cuidados intensivos

Eurocopter y el Ministerio Federal de Defensa alemán han firmado hoy un contrato para 
equipar doce helicópteros de transporte táctico NH90 (TTH) para cambio rápido y 
cuidados intensivos en operaciones de evacuación aérea avanzada.    

El acuerdo, firmado en el Salón Aeronáutico de Paris, cubre la entrega de un equipamiento de evacuación sanitaria avanzada (Forward Air MedEvac Kits, FwdAirMedEvac) que permite  la transformación de los helicópteros militares polivalentes NH90 como respuesta de Eurocopter a la iniciativa del Ministerio de Defensa alemán para lograr capacidad de evacuación sanitaria protegida en situaciones de combate.   
 
La configuración FwdAirMedEvac del NH90 capacita a las fuerzas armadas para llevar a cabo misiones de evacuación en helicóptero sobre cualquier terreno, de día o de noche, y bajo cualesquiera condiciones meteorológicas o de vuelo visual, sea cual sea la amenaza existente en el teatro de operaciones. Alemania podrá poner en práctica la nueva capacidad FwdAirMedEvac a partir de julio de 2012.   
   
En la firma del contrato en el salón aeronáutico de París estuvieron presentes Ralf Barnscheidt, vicepresidente de Clientes Gubernamentales de Eurocopter, Klaus Przemeck, vicepresidente del grupo Eurocopter, NAHEMA TTH del programa NH90, y Helmut Richter, de la Oficina Federal de Tecnologías de Defensa y Adquisiciones (BWB, siglas en alemán), en representación del Gobierno alemán.    
 
"Eurocopter ha desarrollado un equipamiento de evacuación aérea sanitaria avanzada a la 
medida de las futuras necesidades de las fuerzas armadas alemanas", dijo Barnscheidt. 
"Complementa las capacidades polivalentes del NH90 y, en una época de presupuestos 
limitados, ofrece una solución económica completa y eficiente para llevar a cabo misiones de evacuación complicadas".     
  
En la configuración FwdAirMedEvac, los helicópteros NH90 pueden estar equipados con dos puestos de cuidades intensivos para el tratamiento de heridos y con asientos para el personal sanitario. El paquete de misión es adecuado para instalarlo en el NH90 TTH en sólo 30 minutos. 

El equipamiento médico, tal como un desfibrilador, un ventilador de transporte y un monitor de control, permite el tratamiento de heridos y víctimas traumatizadas a bordo del aparato. El diseño de la zona de trabajo satisface los requisitos del Servicio Médico del Ejército alemán.     

En una misión característica de evacuación sanitaria podrían participar dos helicópteros: uno para la evacuación de soldados o de personal civil heridos, el segundo para protección armada de la misión.

Los sistemas elegidos para la configuración aseguran la rápida disponibilidad del helicóptero, ya que son compatibles con el programa actual del NH90. Para abreviar el procedimiento de autorización se ha adelantado una parte del trabajo de desarrollo previsto en un principio para la configuración operacional final (Final Operational Configuration, FOC) del NH90. Algunos de los sistemas ya existentes, como el de contramedidas electrónicas, la pantalla en casco para vuelos nocturnos a baja cota, y las comunicaciones protegidas de voz se adaptarán a los nuevos requisitos de misión.    

El NH90 es el mayor programa de helicóptero militar jamás puesto en marcha en Europa. El helicóptero bimotor de peso medio está equipado con la más moderna tecnología y se entrega en dos versiones: como helicóptero de transporte táctico (TTH) y como helicóptero de fragata OTAN (NFH). Las fuerzas armadas alemanas han cursado un pedido total de 122 NH90 en la variante TTH. De ellos, 80 son para las unidades de aviadores del Ejército y 42 para la Fuerza Aérea.   

Como la aeronave de ala rotatoria más moderna de su clase, el NH90 ofrece un alto grado de integración en torno a un sistema central de aviónica de doble bus, una cabina de mando completamente digital con pantallas multifuncionales, así como mandos de vuelo eléctricos (flyby-wire), además de un piloto automático de cuatro ejes.    

La gestión del programa NH90 está a cargo de NHIndustries, un consorcio integrado por 
AgustaWestland (32%), Eurocopter (62,5%) y Fokker Aerostructures (5,5%). El total de pedidos en firme de las versiones del NH90 asciende a 529 unidades, que se destinan a 19 fuerzas armadas de 14 países diferentes: Alemania, Australia, Bélgica, España, Finlandia, Francia, Grecia, Italia, Noruega, Nueva Zelanda, Omán, Países Bajos, Portugal y Suecia.   

Finnish NH90 helicopters demonstrate their operational capabilities: More than 150 soldiers are airlifted over a 320 km. distance in five hours

The multi-role NH90 helicopter's ability to support large troop movements over long 
distances were demonstrated during the Finnish Defense Forces' main field exercise this 
month, in which 157 soldiers were transported 320 kilometers during two operational 
rotations. 

For this exercise, the Finnish NH90 Utti Jaeger Regiment's Helicopter Battalion was given a mission to relocate 157 conscripts of the Guard Jaeger Regiment from the Helsinki area to Kauhava. 

Eight NH90 TTHs (tactical transport helicopters) – along with an additional helicopter in reserve – were assigned to realize this ambitious mission, which was accomplished in five hours during two rotations.  The operation involved a total of 40 flight hours with an 80 percent availability, and it by far outperformed the Finnish Defense Forces' expectations. Two hot refueling were conducted during the operation, with four helicopters being refueled at same time during servicing lasting only nine minutes.  

"The NH90 TTH is technologically very advanced, very fast and very agile compared to any 
tactical transport helicopter in the world," said Lieutenant Colonel Ari Pellinen, Commanding Officer of the Helicopter Battalion. "For the pilot, it is a real pleasure to fly – like a highperformance sports car with 16 seats in the back."  

The success of this massive troop airlift exercise demonstrated the competences of the Finnish Defense Forces' pilots, mechanics and technicians with respect to planning, execution and maintenance of the NH90.  In addition, it was the result of a strong cooperation between all actors who have contributed to supporting each phase of this military exercise – which was named "Pyörremyrsky" (the Finnish word for "whirlwind") and performed on June 8. 

"The support of Eurocopter for this exercise was critically important as increased flow of spare parts, and Patria Helicopters Utti has been of great assistance in reducing the workload of the Battalion's technical personnel," Lt. Col. Pellinen added.  "During the exercise, the maintenance actions were carried out by Battalion's own technical personnel.  Eurocopter's On-Site-Support (OSS) in Utti has constantly been important  in providing complementary instructions and enhancing the communications between Eurocopter and the end user."  

To date, the Utti Jaeger Regiment's Helicopter Battalion has received 10 NH90 TTHs out of the 20 ordered by Finland from the NHIndustries consortium.  "The achievement of this tremendous troop transportation by the Finnish Defense Forces marks an important milestone in the NH90's successful fielding," stated Wolfgang Schoder, the Executive Vice President for Programs at Eurocopter

The NH90 is a 9-10 metric ton-class helicopter designed to modernize and boost the capability of tactical transport and anti-submarine combat fleets. It is a fly-by-wire, all-composite aircraft with the highest crashworthiness standards. Equipped with a large cabin, a rear ramp, weather radar and forward looking infrared sensor, the NH90 is capable of carrying two pilots, two loadmasters and 18 combat troops over ranges of up to 900 km. at maximum speeds of 300 km./hr. 

Firm orders for all NH90 versions have reached 529 aircraft from 14 countries worldwide. The NH90 is the biggest military helicopter program ever launched in Europe, and also is the most complex – with 23 different variants being produced. NH90 production progressing well, with six assembly lines now operational in France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Finland and Australia. To date, 74 NH90s have been delivered to customers. The NH90 program is managed by NHIndustries, a consortium owned by AgustaWestland (32 percent), Eurocopter (62.5 percent), and Fokker Aerostructures (5.5 percent). 

Boeing Names KC-46 Tanker Suppliers

ST. LOUIS, June 22, 2011 -- The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] today announced the supplier team that will provide key components for the U.S. Air Force's KC-46 Tanker. The Air Force selected Boeing on Feb. 24 to replace 179 Eisenhower-era KC-135 aerial refueling aircraft.

Based on the proven Boeing 767-200ER commercial aircraft, the KC-46 is powered by two Pratt & Whitney PW4062 engines and will be flown by three aircrew members (pilot, co-pilot, boom operator) with additional permanent seating for 12 aircrew.

The KC-46 has a maximum fuel capacity of 212,000 pounds and is equipped with a flush-mounted, air-to-air refueling receptacle that is capable of onloading fuel at 1,200 gallons per minute.

Boom operators will control the refueling systems from the crew compartment via the AROS and a series of cameras mounted on the tanker’s fuselage that provide a 185-degree field of view, as well as a camera on the boom that captures 3-D video. This advanced system allows the boom operator to refuel all fixed-wing receiver aircraft, anytime, on every mission, to include simultaneous multi-point refueling from the wing air refueling pods. The KC-46 refueling systems include a digital fly-by-wire boom capable of offloading 1,200 gallons of fuel per minute, as well as a permanent centerline drogue system and removable wing air refueling pods that can each offload 400 gallons of fuel per minute.

Featuring a maximum takeoff weight of 415,000 pounds, the tanker will carry 18 463L cargo pallets (the same number of pallets as the Air Force’s Boeing C-17 airlifter) and is capable of transporting 58 passengers normally and up to 114 passengers during contingency operations. This multi-mission tanker aircraft also will provide urgent aeromedical evacuation by transporting 58 medical patients (24 litters/34 ambulatory).
Boeing will build the KC-46 Tanker using a low-risk approach to manufacturing by a trained and experienced workforce at existing facilities in Everett, Wash., and Wichita.

E BOURGET, France, June 22, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) today called upon the aviation industry to invest, evolve and adapt to support the expected exponential growth in demand for qualified aviation personnel as the company released its 2011 Pilot and Technician Outlook at the Paris Air Show.
The Boeing outlook indicates that by 2030 the aviation industry will require:

  • 460,000 new commercial airline pilots
  • 650,000 new commercial airline maintenance technicians



"Clearly, the sheer size of this vital pipeline is staggering," said Sherry Carbary, vice president, Boeing Flight Services. "To meet the demand for capable, well-trained people, Boeing and the aviation industry need to move with the speed of technology to provide the tools, training and work environment that tech-savvy pilots and technicians will expect from us."

Boeing projects that airlines will need an average of 23,000 new commercial jet pilots and 32,500 new technicians per year to maintain and fly an expanded world fleet expected to grow to nearly 40,000 airplanes over the next 20 years, as well as replace the coming wave of retirements.

The largest demand for pilots and technicians will be in the Asia Pacific region, with an expected need for 182,300 pilots and 247,400 technicians. China alone will need 72,700 pilots and 108,300 technicians.

LE BOURGET, France, June 22, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) today announced it will conduct a trade summit in Casablanca later this year in partnership with the Moroccan Ministry of Industry, Trade and New Technologies.

The October 12th trade mission will introduce Boeing suppliers to Moroccan companies and encourage strong partnerships with the country through the Moroccan Aerospace Industries Association.

"We have a long and productive relationship with Morocco, dating back to 1969 when Royal Air Maroc first purchased a Boeing 727," said Stan Deal, vice president and general manager of Supplier Management for Boeing Commercial Airplanes. Boeing is already a shareholder in MATIS, a Moroccan company specializing in aerospace wiring and harness products that will celebrate its 10th anniversary of operation later this year. Boeing has also developed strong relationships with many of the 100 other aerospace-related companies in Morocco.

Pan sector initiative targets two million tonnes of aviation biofuel by 2020

The European Commission, Airbus, leading European airlines and European biofuel producers, have launched an exciting new industry wide initiative to try and speed up the commercialisation of aviation biofuels in Europe.

The inititive labelled “Biofuel Flightpath” is a roadmap with clear milestones which targets an annual production of two million tonnes of sustainably produced biofuel for aviation by 2020. The biofuel will be produced in Europe from European sourced feedstock material and has the backing of The European Commissioner, Günther Oettinger, Airbus CEO Tom Enders, major European airlines, and a number of advanced biofuel producers.

The “Biofuel Flightpath” commits members to support and promote the production, storage and distribution of sustainably produced drop-in biofuels for use in aviation and to reach two million tonnes production and consumption by 2020. It also targets establishing appropriate financial mechanisms to support the construction of industrial “first of a kind” advanced biofuel production plants.

Promote appropriate legislative measures to ensure the market uptake of paraffinic biofuels by the aviation sector.

Establish financing structures to facilitate sustainable biofuel projects.
Publicly promote the benefits of replacing kerosene by sustainable biofuels;
