U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy and FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford announced a landmark contract awarding Air Space Intelligence (ASI) two transformative technologies for the National Airspace System: Flow Management Data and Services (FMDS) and Strategic Management of Airspace, Routes, and Trajectories (SMART).
These AI-enhanced platforms will serve as the technological backbone of the FAA's Air Traffic Control System Command Center, consolidating fragmented data sources into one unified system. FMDS analyzes flight plans and real-time positioning to predict traffic flows and capacity limitations, while SMART strategically coordinates schedules and trajectories before aircraft depart to prevent congestion proactively.
Key benefits include reduced flight delays, improved traffic flow, increased airspace capacity, and enhanced controller efficiency through centralized visualization of weather patterns and flight paths. The systems use predictive modeling to orchestrate localized flight reroutes around severe weather, minimizing disruption.
