Boeing Begins Testing on 787 Dreamliner Fatigue Airframe

EVERETT, Wash., Sept. 13, 2010 – Boeing [NYSE: BA] has begun fatigue testing on the structural airframe of the 787 Dreamliner at the Everett, Wash., site. Fatigue testing involves placing the 787 test airframe into a test rig that simulates multiple lifecycles to test how the airplane responds over time.

“Unlike static tests, where loads are applied to the airplane structure to simulate both normal operation and extreme flight conditions, fatigue testing is a much longer process that simulates up to three times the number of flight cycles an airplane is likely to experience during a lifetime of service," said Jim Ogonowski, structures vice president, Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

While the structural test program already has validated the strength of the airframe, fatigue testing looks at long-term, continued use. This is the natural progression of testing on a new airplane and part of the process to achieve U.S. Federal Aviation Administration certification.

As he gazed at a 787 Dreamliner mounted in a metal cage and attached to hundreds of mechanical devices, Peter Brownlow recalled his childhood.

"Every kid's dream is to build something and then try to break it, right?," asked Brownlow, the fatigue testing conductor for the 787 program. "In essence, that's what we're doing. We take an airplane and we try to put it through its paces and try to break it at the end."

Brownlow and a team of engineers recently began an extensive program of twisting and tugging a 787 structural airframe. The ongoing punishment will simulate more than 100,000 flights.

Unlike static tests, which push the airplane to extreme loads to see how well it handles in once-in-a-lifetime emergencies, fatigue tests show how the structural integrity stands up to the day-in, day-out stresses that build up over thousands of flights spread out over decades.

"We're demonstrating the durability of the airplane," said Ray Clark, the 787 static and fatigue test director. "We're checking our structural maintenance procedures so we do them first on this airplane before an airline has to. And we validate that we do have inspection techniques where we can find any cyclical damage well before the fleet will experience it."

To simulate multiple flights, Boeing engineers direct mechanical devices to apply pressure to selected spots on the airframe's surface, from the leading edge of the wing to the tail fin to the fuselage.

"The devices impose loads typical of backing off the gate, taxiing out, taking off, climbing, cruise, experiencing a storm, descending, landing, taxiing back to the gate," said Clark. "So we mimic the ground-to-air-to-ground cycle of an airplane in service."

Since airlines will use the 787 on very different routes, stress analysts designed several flight profiles to recreate the range of conditions the airplane is likely to face over its lifetime.

The process continues seven days a week for three years as engineers push and pull on the control surfaces over and over again. When all is said and done, the airplane will have "flown" about three times the number of flight cycles a 787 is likely to face in its lifetime. It's part of the exhaustive program to certify the Dreamliner.

"It's certainly a long campaign," said Brownlow. "There's a lot of pride involved to be part of a program like this and to help usher it into the public and see people flying it safely." .

http://www.europapress.es/sociedad/ciencia/noticia-nasa-estudia-lanzamientos-horizontal-20100913185535.html

EASA: Flying Multiple Satellites Together In Formation Is the Future

http://www.aero-news.net/news/aerospace.cfm?ContentBlockID=9423b825-4de3-4601-84fd-0c91d461dbfc&Dynamic=1

All space missions are difficult. Docking a pair of spacecraft is tough but flying multiple satellites together in formation is considered the real cutting edge. A new simulator is now allowing mission planners to get to grips with multi-satellite missions to come, starting with ESA's Proba-3. Several space agencies are preparing formation-flying missions, but it is hard to overstate the difficulty they face: separate expensive pieces of hardware, each one zipping through space at several kilometres per second, may have to manoeuvre to within metres of each other to achieve their goals.

SkyRider airplane "seats" for flying standing-up

The SkyRider's creator insists that it is, in fact, a seat and not a way to trick standing passengers into thinking that they are not, in fact, still vertical. Before you go into a full-fledged panic though, it's worth noting that these seats have many hurdles to jump before finding themselves inside airplanes.

The SkyRider seats will be unveiled next week at the Aircraft Interiors Expo Americas conference in Long Beach. It's intended to be seating for a new budget "class" (below Coach obviously) and airliners are supposedly interested. I hope it's not serious cause the SkyRider seats only give 23 inches of leg room. Here's what the director behind the design group has to say about the Skyrider seats:

"For flights anywhere from one to possibly even up to three hours ... this would be comfortable seating," he says. "The seat ... is like a saddle. Cowboys ride eight hours on their horses during the day and still feel comfortable in the saddle."

An FAA spokesperson said, "While it's not impossible, it's difficult to conceive of a standing seat that would be able to meet all applicable FAA requirements and still be cost-effective."

India plans to cost nearly six billion U.S. dollar to jointly develop a stealth fighter with Russia over the next ten years, local media reported on Sunday.

India will shoulder about 30 percent of the total design in the stealth fighter project, and mainly focus on the composite components with the stealth function and some electronics equipments, such as avionics, electronic warfare systems and cockpit displays. Additionally, India will be responsible to design from the single-seat stealth fighter into a two-seat type which would be deployed by the Indian Air Force, said the HAL official.

Global Observer, Hydrogen powered UAV, Aims To Make Satellites Obsolete

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/39102502/ns/technology_and_science-tech_and_gadgets/

Unmanned platforms like the Global Observer that operate above 50,000 feet combine the capabilities of satellites with the flexibility of aircraft for persistent intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions. The aircraft is being developed by AeroVironment under a joint concept technology demonstration (JCTD) sponsored by several U.S. agencies under the direction of the Special Operations Command

The Global Observer has a 175-foot wingspan and weighs less than 10,000 pounds. It has a modular composite airframe, which enables it be transported by a cargo aircraft, and an internal-combustion engine modified to burn hydrogen that drives a generator to produce electricity to power the UAV’s four propellers. Hydrogen was chosen because it has three times the energy of conventional fuel. When in operation, the aircraft produces no carbon emissions.

Trust: Greatest Obstacle To UAV Autonomy

 http://www.aviationweek.com/aw/generic/story_generic.jsp?channel=awst&id=news/awst/2010/09/13/AW_09_13_2010_p48-252520.xml

Autonomy is at the end of a spectrum of increasing automation, and increasing complexity that automation can deal with, says Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Air Vehicles Directorate scientist Bob Smith. “Some automation exists today in almost every capability, but we are on a trajectory to increasing complexity,” he says. “At the same time we have to make sure the automation works well with humans. That’s a critical aspect.”

Autonomy means different things to different people. To Information Directorate chief scientist Rich Linderman, it is a matter of speed—autonomous systems can sense, self-adapt, dynamically plan and make decisions at speeds that preclude having people in the loop. But while the cyber domain requires decision speeds far beyond human capability, timescales in the aviation domain still allow human interaction, says Dan Thompson, Air Vehicles Directorate scientist.

Driving increased autonomy into Air Force ground and air systems to reduce manpower requirements is the major tenet of Technology Horizons, Smith says, adding: “The hope is that increased automation will make each person more effective, and allow them to step back from the hands-on control that timescales allow, but budgets do not.”

NASA Hosts Green Aviation Summit

NASA has a "critical responsibility" to the flying public to develop environmentally responsible solutions to the nation's most pressing aviation problems, Administrator Charles F. Bolden Jr. said Wednesday. Addressing the Green Aviation Summit, which ran through Thursday at NASA's Ames Research Center, Bolden said air travel is one of the safest modes of transportation and vital to the U.S. economy, but increasing air traffic is taking a toll on the environment and the nation's aviation infrastructure.
"We need to make some changes -- both in the design of aircraft and in the way they transit through our skies to not only maintain, but improve safety and efficiency," Bolden said. "That's a huge challenge, but we at NASA enthusiastically accept it."

NASA has a suite of incremental goals for demonstrating the feasibility of aircraft technology and air traffic management techniques that can minimize the environmental effects of air transportation by:

  • Enabling aircraft to burn 33 percent less fuel than today's most efficient models by 2015, 50 percent less by 2020, and better than 50 percent less by 2025.
  • Cutting engine emissions of nitric oxide and nitrogen oxide, which contribute to ozone creation, 20 percent by 2015, 50 percent by 2020, and better than 50 percent by 2025 -- when compared with today's best engines. Reducing the amount of fuel burned reduces emissions of carbon dioxide, which contribute to global warming.
  • Reducing the nuisance noise footprint around airports to one-third its current size by 2015 and one-sixth by 2020, and containing it within the airport property boundary by 2025.

Gyrocopter world flight on hold due to expected extreme weather

Gyrocopter world flight on hold due to expected extreme weather

An attempt at being the first gyrocopter flight around the world is to be put on hold because of anticipated extreme weather in the Bearing Sea and North Atlantic. The prospects of realising these sectors of the flight during the autumn and winter periods in an open cockpit gyrocopter are considered to be technically very challenging. As a result of this, the pilot Norman Surplus, has decided to suspend his ongoing FAI World Record attempt until the spring of 2011.

The expected arrival of the gyrocopter in these far northern latitudes later in the year than first planned came about due to unforeseen delays earlier in the trip. The "first half" of the gyrocopters flight has seen it fly almost 18,000 km across mountains, desert, forest fires, sandstorms and open sea. Norman has also flown into the record books during 2010 achieving the longest distance ever flown across the globe by a gyrocopter.

BAE To Bid Hawk For USAF T-X

http://www.aviationweek.com/aw/generic/story_generic.jsp?channel=aerospacedaily&id=news/asd/2010/09/09/06.xml

BAE Systems is planning to propose its single-engine Hawk trainer as the U.S. Air Force begins to move slowly toward a competition for a T-38 replacement.

The average age of the T-38 last year was 42 years, but financial pressures in the Pentagon are forcing the Air Force to push off its plans for a replacement until 2012 at the earliest.

BAE’s announcement came Sept. 8, only days before the annual Air Force Association convention next week in Washington. Likely competitors are the twin-engine Aermacchi M346 and the Lockheed Martin/KAI T-50. Boeing also has left the door open to designing a trainer for the Air Force.

Researchers create nano-architectured aluminum alloy with strength of steel

http://www.gizmag.com/aluminum-alloy-with-strength-of-steel/16307/

Using a technique that creates a new nanoscale architecture, researchers have created an aluminum alloy just as strong as steel but with reasonable plasticity to stretch and not break under stress. Importantly, the technique of creating these nanostructures can be used on many different types of metals and the team plans to work on strengthening magnesium, a metal that is even lighter than aluminum that could be used to make strong, lightweight body armor for soldiers.

Dr. Yuntian Zhu, a professor of materials science at North Carolina State University worked on the project to create the super strong aluminum alloy along with colleagues from the University of Sydney in Australia; the University of California, Davis; and Ufa State Aviation Technical University in Russia. He says the aluminum alloys have unique structural elements that, when combined to form a hierarchical structure at several nanoscale levels, make them super-strong and ductile.

http://www.actualidadaeroespacial.com/index.php?view=noticias&id=4c85cd308919b&viewTemplate=1

http://www.abc.es/20100907/sociedad/2013-vuelta-mundo-avion-20100907.html

Boeing Conducts Remote 787 testing

EVERETT, Wash., Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Four of the five Boeing (NYSE: BA) 787 flight test airplanes are conducting remote test operations this week. ZA005 continues testing from its base of operations in Seattle.

ZA001, the first 787, is taking a break from operations out of Edwards Air Force Base in California for a week's worth of testing in Roswell, N.M. This is ZA001's second visit to Roswell. Last month the airplane conducted wet-runway testing there. Testing in the days ahead will include rejected-takeoff conditions. ZA001 has been on remote deployment to Edwards Air Force Base for several weeks, with a focus on takeoff- and landing-performance conditions.

The second 787 is conducting high-latitude and cold-weather testing at Keflavik Airport in Iceland.
"We've been watching for the right weather conditions for some time," said Scott Fancher, vice president and general manager of the 787 program. "The team was happy to see the forecast in Iceland met our needs and we deployed to Keflavik earlier this week."

The hot weather in Yuma, Ariz., with temperatures in excess of 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius), has provided the necessary conditions for another set of tests happening on ZA003. Its deployment is expected to last about another week.

ZA004 has spent an extended time operating out of Victorville, Calif., conducting flight loads survey testing. This testing measures external pressure distributions throughout the flight envelope. ZA004 is set to do testing in Glasgow, Mont., after it wraps up its California testing.

Artificial ice shapes have been affixed to the leading edges of the wings and horizontal and vertical stabilizer of the fifth 787 to complete another group of tests required for certification. Ice-shape testing verifies the airplane's performance in the presence of ice. Natural ice testing has already occurred.

"Flight test is staying very busy," said Fancher. "We continue to be very pleased with the performance of the airplane. We're definitely putting it through its paces, subjecting it to the harshest environments and conditions to ensure it is ready for revenue service."

The 787 flight test fleet has conducted more than 1,650 hours of flying over more than 540 flights.

Air Force looks to replace aging T-38s

The next approach to teaching future Air Force pilots — be it a jet, a simulator or a mix of both — must be reasonably priced but do as good of a job as the aging trainer it will replace, according to the official in charge of analyzing the options.

Fighter and bomber pilots have been learning to fly some version of the T-38 Talon for the last 50 years and the time has come to find a successor, said Gen. Stephen Lorenz, outgoing commander of Air Education and Training Command at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas.

“It takes years to procure a new trainer, so we need to start the process now,” Lorenz said. “The T-38 is getting old.

GULFSTREAM G650 REACHES MACH 0.995. Accomplishment Establishes G650 As World’s Fastest Civil Aircraft

SAVANNAH, Ga., August 26, 2010 - Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. announced today that its ultra-long-range, ultra-large-cabin Gulfstream G650 recently reached Mach 0.995 as part of its 1,800-hour flight-test program.

The aircraft achieved this speed during flutter testing, which evaluates the aircraft’s damping responses following an input from an external test device. Flutter testing is performed at a variety of frequencies, speeds, altitudes, weights and centers of gravity.

For the initial series of flutter tests, the aircraft achieved clearance out to both its design dive speed (Vd) and design Mach dive speed (Md) at altitudes ranging from 10,000 feet to up to the aircraft’s maximum certified altitude of 51,000 feet.

In order to achieve the maximum speed of Mach 0.995, Gulfstream experimental test pilots Tom Horne and Gary Freeman along with flight test engineer Bill Osborne took Serial Number (S/N) 6001 into a dive, pitching the aircraft’s nose 16 to 18 degrees below the horizon. During the dive, flutter exciters introduced a range of vibration frequencies to the wing, tail and flight control surfaces to ensure the aircraft naturally dampened out the oscillations without further action from the pilots. Even under such extreme circumstances, the G650 performed flawlessly.

“The airplane is very predictable,” said Horne, senior experimental test pilot, Gulfstream. “It’s very easy to control and to get precise control at those speeds. The airplane response has matched the expectations of our engineers, and we’ve been able to easily fly the test conditions and march through the test plan.”

During the flutter test missions, a team of multi-disciplinary engineers in Gulfstream’s state-of-the-art telemetry center in Savannah monitored the aircraft’s behavior and determined real-time the damping characteristics of the aircraft. The vibration frequencies exerted on the aircraft ranged from 2 hertz, or twice per second, to 58 hertz, or about as fast as a fluorescent light flickers.

“We’re doing very well,” said Pres Henne, senior vice president of Programs, Engineering and Test, Gulfstream. “The demonstrated flutter margins met or exceeded our expectations out to maximum speeds. That’s a good sign.”

As S/N 6001 continued with flutter testing, S/N 6005 completed initial phase manufacturing and began engine testing. S/N 6005 is the fifth and final aircraft in the G650 flight-test program. Each aircraft in the program has a specific purpose, with S/N 6001 focused on envelope expansion, air data calibration, flutter, in-flight performance and flight controls. S/N 6002 is used to evaluate the aircraft’s systems as well as its takeoff and landing performance, while S/N 6003 tests the avionics, in-flight load measurement and ice protection system. S/N 6004 will be the first G650 outfitted and tested with a full interior, which is currently being installed. S/N 6005 will participate in the reduced vertical separation minimum testing.

The G650 flight-test program officially began on Nov. 25, 2009. Through Aug. 25, the four airplanes currently flying in the program have completed more than 170 flights and 575 flight-test hours.

Kepler Finds Multi-planet Extra-solar System

http://www.aviationweek.com/aw/generic/story_channel.jsp?channel=space&id=news/asd/2010/08/27/13.xml

Astronomers evaluating data from NASA’s Kepler spacecraft have discovered two Saturn-sized gas giants orbiting a star in the first application of a technique that may help them find habitable Earthlike planets.

Designated Kepler 9b and 9c, the two planets are orbiting the Kepler 9 star at a distance closer than the planet Mercury orbits the Sun. Data suggest there may be a smaller “super Earth” skimming just above the star, which lies about 2,000 light years from Earth, but it remains to be confirmed.

Shape-shifting UAV designed for stormy sea rescues

http://www.gizmag.com/shape-shifting-marine-rescue-uav/16161/

People often need to be rescued at sea because of stormy weather – exactly the kind of conditions in which it is not safe to fly. Nonetheless, fully-crewed helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft are regularly sent out into such weather to perform maritime rescues, endangering both the crew and the expensive aircraft themselves. Soon, however, a new type of unmanned remote-control aircraft may be able to do the job. Not only would flight crews be kept out of harm’s way, but as demonstrated by a functioning prototype, the aircraft would outperform conventional planes in rough weather, thanks to shape-shifting technology.

Technologies Corporation (UTC) of the Rolls-Royce swept fan blade patent in the Federal Court for the Eastern District of Virginia in the United States. The complaint specifically alleges that the fan stages on the Engine Alliance GP7200 engine and on UTC’s PW1000G engine (also known as the Geared Turbofan) infringe the Rolls-Royce patent. The complaint also alleges that a number of other UTC aero civil engines infringe the Rolls-Royce patent. Rolls-Royce is seeking damages and injunctions.

The origins of this case date back to the late 1990s. The dispute was initiated by UTC when it applied to the US Patent Office to have the Rolls-Royce swept fan blade patent struck out. UTC’s efforts were unsuccessful and the validity of the Rolls-Royce patent has been upheld in the United States.

First Airbus Military A330MRTT for UK Royal Air Force leaves hangar

The first A330 MRTT Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft (FSTA) for the UK Royal Air Force has completed the in-door trials, such as systems trials, required prior to First Flight and has been rolled out of its hangar at Airbus Military’s Getafe, Madrid facility to continue with the out-door trials, such as fuel trials and others.

Once all trials are successfully completed, the aircraft will be handed over to the Flight Test Team for First Flight which is due in the first part of September. The aircraft has been converted from a basic A330-200 airframe by Airbus Military. Following the flight-test programme it will be delivered late next year to the AirTanker consortium responsible for operating the aircraft on behalf of the UK Royal Air Force.

Airbus-led ‘AIRE2’ trials to spearhead green trajectories with A380

Typical A380 transatlantic flight could reduce CO2 emissions by three tonnes

An Airbus-led consortium in partnership with Air France and the air navigation service providers from UK, Canada and the US (NATS, Nav Canada and the FAA) will shortly commence ‘Transatlantic Green Flight’ (TGF) trials with an Air France A380 on revenue flights from New York (JFK) to Paris (CDG). Under a recent contract from the SESAR Joint Undertaking (SJU), these A380 TGF trials are part of the second wave the Atlantic Interoperability Initiative to reduce Emissions – “AIRE2”. The first phase, AIRE, was jointly launched by the European Commission and the FAA in June 2007 at the Paris Air Show.

The TGF flights, for which Airbus has brought together numerous parties, are due to take place over a six to eight week period commencing in the fourth quarter of 2010. These will cover the optimisation of the taxi-out procedure at John F. Kennedy airport, as well as the en-route leg over the Atlantic. Overall it is estimated that each A380 flight can reduce CO2 emissions by around three tonnes, compared with existing procedures.

“These transatlantic flight trials will help to move the industry towards more efficient operational concepts and sustainable growth over the longer term,” says Charles Champion, Executive Vice President of Engineering at Airbus. He adds: “What we trial today with the A380 will contribute to setting tomorrow’s standards, thanks to system-wide Air Traffic Management improvements prepared by programmes like SESAR and NextGen.”

TGF operational contributions: The FAA will support Air France to start each trial with a fuel-saving ‘reduced engine taxi’ from the gate to the runway at JFK. This will be enabled via estimates of taxi time, allowing for A380 taxiing powered by only two of its four engines. Meanwhile, NATS and Nav Canada will facilitate the Atlantic portion of the flight which will reduce CO2 emissions through an optimized trajectory where more flexibility will be arranged for speed, altitude and lateral routing. This trajectory takes advantage of the A380’s high optimum cruise altitude of 39,000ft and above.

Additional AIRE2 projects – ‘VINGA’ & ‘Green Shuttle’
Airbus is also engaged as a partner in two further AIRE2 trials: ‘VINGA’ and ‘Green Shuttle’. VINGA, which builds on the experience of last year’s AIRE ‘MINT’ flight trials (with Novair and Swedish Air Navigation Service provider LFV), will now for the first time validate a transition from a curved RNP 0.3 arrival to an ILS approach at Gothenburg Landvetter Airport. This operational implementation will be facilitated by Airbus’ RNP services subsidiary, Quovadis. Meanwhile, the ‘Green Shuttle’ project, in partnership with Air France and the French air navigation service provider DSNA, seeks to optimize all phases of the airline’s ‘La Navette’ flights between Paris-Orly and Toulouse which are operated with A320 Family aircraft.

and this week Red Bull said it has developed a "flying video production studio" to capture the event for live streaming over the Internet. When the current record was set, 50 years ago this month, USAF Col. (Ret.) Joe Kittinger documented his jump from 102,800 feet using spring-wound motion-picture cameras warmed by hot-water bottles. The Red Bull Stratos capsule will be equipped with nine high-definition cameras, three 4K digital cinematography cameras and three high-resolution digital still cameras. The outside cameras are in pressurized housings designed to protect them from the near-vacuum air pressure, ice and extreme heat of the stratospheric conditions.

appearances are deceptive. Various is not a fast jet despite its swept wings and tails: it is designed for a 220 knot cruise speed, mainly to address a Marine requirement for a UCAV that can match the speed of the V-22. Top speed is 320 knots and it can loiter efficiently at 160 knots.

So why the swept wings? The semi-blended design with the long-chord inner wings is needed to provide a home for the lift fans on the vehicle's center of gravity. At the same time, sweepback is needed to balance the vehicle properly. And the big V-tails are not there for high-g maneuvering, but to provide adequate control authority during transition.

The turning point has been the U.S. Army's award earlier this year of a contract to Northrop Grumman Corp. to design and build as many as three football-field-size airships that will sit high over Afghanistan, monitoring everything that moves over hundreds of square miles.

The military already uses unmanned aerial vehicles for surveillance, intelligence and combat operations. Now, the coming unmanned long-endurance multi- intelligence vehicle, or LEMV, will patrol for three weeks at time, sending a constant stream of data to operators below, at a fraction of the operating cost of current unmanned aerial vehicles.

The Army's sudden interest in the technology that it pioneered in its basic form as the spotter balloon is, in part, related to the need to step up surveillance and intelligence to help compensate for the drop in troop numbers. "We're exchanging technology for people," says Alan Metzger, head of Northrop's LEMV program.

http://elblogdelvuelo.es/el-mejor-momento-para-reservar-un-vuelo-seria-unas-8-semanas-antes-segun-dos-economistas.html
