U.K. Cuts Aircraft Fleets in Strategic Review

As part of its 8% cut in planned defense spending, the U.K. will retire a slew of aircraft early and also revamp its modernization plans.
The decisions laid out today under the long-awaited Strategic Defense and Security Review include a decision to cancel the BAE Systems MRA4 Nimrod program and retire the Raytheon R1 Sentinel ground-surveillance platform as soon as they are freed up from Afghanistan duties. That means the government is pulling the plug on more than £5 billion ($7.8 billion) in intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance programs spent in the past decade.

19,oct,10.- La Comunidad de Madrid ha premiado un sistema de detección de fuentes contaminantes en las aguas, denominado NEPA, e ideado por el madrileño Rafael Olmedo, en la categoría de solución innovadora regional dentro de la competición europea "Galileo Masters 2010/ European Satellite Navigation Competition". Además del premio, entregado en Múnich (Alemania), Olmedo también ha sido galardonado en la categoría de mejor proyecto relacionado con la navegación por satélite, que concede la Agencia Espacial Europea.
Esta es la quinta edición consecutiva en la que la Comunidad de Madrid, a través del Instituto Madrileño de Desarrollo (IMADE) y con la colaboración del Cluster Aeroespacial de Madrid, participa, concediendo el premio a la categoría de mejor premio regional, en la competición internacional del Galileo Masters, que este año celebra su sexta edición, y que tiene entre sus propósitos el desarrollo de las denominadas regiones tecnológicas de referencia, entre las cuales destaca la Comunidad de Madrid.
La competición internacional de navegación por satélite Galileo Masters nació con el propósito de promover la creación de nuevas aplicaciones innovadoras orientadas a mejorar la calidad de vida de las personas y empleando el sistema europeo de posicionamiento global por satélite Galileo.
En esta edición se han presentado 357 propuestas provenientes de 44 países participantes. El pasado mes de septiembre fueron valoradas en la Comunidad de Madrid, lugar del último ganador de la principal categoría de la competición europea, por un comité internacional de 30 expertos de la industria, que valoraron y reconocieron las soluciones innovadoras en los ámbitos de la salud y medicina, los aviones no tripulados, el transporte, el ahorro de energía, el rescate de personas y la seguridad, entre otros.
El Galileo Masters fue creado por la región en Baviera (Alemania) en 2004 y desde entonces, se entregan los premios en Munich, y se ha cuadruplicado el número de países participantes e ideas concursantes. El premio principal es de 20.000 euros y contempla la posibilidad de utilizar alguna de las infraestructuras de las empresas e instituciones organizadoras para desarrollar el proyecto. Además se entregan premios a los proyectos ganadores dentro de cada región y ocho premios a temas específicos.
Tecnología por satélite para detectar vertidos
El sistema premiado por la Comunidad, que permite monitorizar la calidad del agua en recorridos lineales tales como arroyos o canales de riego, ha sido ideado por el ingeniero del INTA, el madrileño Rafael Olmedo, en colaboración con Luis Burillo, ecotoxicólogo forense del Instituto de Medicina Legal de Valencia. Este sistema se denomina NEPA, en alusión al escorpión de agua (Nepa cinerea, en latín), un organismo cuya presencia y población resulta un indicador natural de la calidad del agua.
Como la mayoría de los ríos y canales no son navegables, es difícil obtener información continua a lo largo de todo trazado. La tecnología actual sólo permite estudiar estos recorridos acuáticos a partir de la recogida y análisis de muestras en puntos determinados y con la necesaria presencia de un analista. Esto se traduce en procesos costosos en tiempo y esfuerzo, y que dificultan identificar con precisión dónde y cuándo se producen los cambios de calidad del agua, o la detección de posible vertidos.
A partir de la integración de los sistemas de navegación por satélite, tecnologías de comunicaciones inalámbricas, y sensores analíticos, NEPA establece una solución que permite, mediante el uso de dispositivos autónomos y de forma remota, detectar variaciones en los indicadores electro-químicos de calidad del agua de forma autónoma y a lo largo de tramos continuos de un canal. NEPA también permitirá a sus usuarios (autoridades, empresas de gestión de aguas, etc…) localizar las entradas de aguas residuales y vertidos y cuantificar su importancia relativa.
Rafael Olmedo, ingeniero técnico aeronáutico, Licenciado en Ciencias Físicas y especializado en sistemas de navegación aeroespaciales, trabaja actualmente en el Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial. Es el tercer año que Olmedo gana el concurso Galileo Master en el apartado de proyectos regionales, el último fue con el denominado e-warning, un sistema de alerta para evitar accidentes en la carretera y el anterior un sistema de navegación volumétrica que mejora la eficiencia y seguridad de la navegación en espacios ocupados por móviles de gran tamaño.

Cessna Announces Larger, Advanced Citation Ten; Debut for Garmin G5000 Avionics, Revolutionary Cabin Management System
“The launch of the Citation Ten is an example of our commitment, repeated throughout the recent downturn, to new product development, and it’s a signal that we intend to do what we need to do to maintain a general aviation industry leadership position,” said Jack Pelton, Cessna chairman, president and CEO. “We’ve teamed with Garmin and with Rolls-Royce to conceive an almost perfect combination of speed, performance, ease of operation and productivity in one airframe – the Citation Ten.”
First flight of the new Citation Ten will be in late 2011, with certification and first delivery in 2013.
The Citation Ten features a 15-inch longer fuselage for more cabin space, winglets for more efficient performance, a new electrical system, dual lithium-ion batteries, new avionics, autothrottle, a redesigned cabin with new interior seats and cabin appointments, and a proprietary fiber optic-based cabin management system including the latest interface options for greater in-flight productivity and connectivity.
Performance is also enhanced with a 211 nautical mile (391 kilometer) increase in range at high-speed cruise, a 214-pound increase in maximum payload and a faster rate of climb direct to 45,000 feet.
“We are particularly excited about the advanced technology incorporated throughout the aircraft and the improved performance characteristics that give our customers a more efficient and a more productive aircraft and aircraft cabin that are designed to meet evolving requirements in business travel,” Pelton said.
“Further distancing this product from the competition is access to world-class customer service, not only through Cessna’s world-class support group, but also from Garmin and Rolls-Royce, with all three recently lauded in independent customer surveys,” Pelton said.
Enhanced Performance
The Citation Ten will use a pair of new Rolls-Royce AE 3007C2 high-flow-fan turbines, each rated at 7,034 pounds of thrust. This gives the Citation Ten a 4 percent improvement in takeoff thrust, 9 percent improvement in climb performance, 7 percent improvement in cruise thrust and an additional 1.4 percent improvement in specific fuel consumption.
The Rolls-Royce AE 3007C2 will be certified in 2013 ahead of aircraft type certification.
New Avionics, Cockpit Styling
Cessna is the first company to announce it will use the integrated Garmin G5000 avionics suite, which will be certified for Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) Part 25 operations (commercial transport aircraft).
“We have a very successful relationship with Garmin, a company recently ranked by aviation professionals as having the best avionics customer support in the industry in a prestigious third-party survey,” Pelton said. “The level of reliability and integration and the ease of use of the G5000 are going to be unprecedented and will give Citation Ten owners a new level of operability.”
The Citation Ten’s restyled, clean cockpit design is anchored by the new, fully integrated Garmin G5000 system that centers on three 14-inch LCD primary and multifunction displays and four touch-screen control panels. Among the standard features of the new system are a pilot-vehicle touch-screen interface, TCAS II with Change 7.1, Synthetic Vision Technology, electronic charts, Garmin’s SafeTaxi, a dual flight management system with WAAS LPV and RNP 0.3 SAAAR capability, solid-state weather radar with turbulence detection and vertical scan capability, integrated terrain awareness and warning system (TAWS), ADS-B Out and Link 2000+ data link. Options include satellite weather and an ICAO Type 1A flight data recorder.
Most Advanced Passenger Cabin in the Industry
Cessna has teamed with Dallas-based Heads Up Technologies to develop an intelligent cabin management system (CMS) that integrates cabin electrical systems, avionics and communications through a fiber optic backbone and an intuitive touch-screen user interface, resulting in “the ultimate connectivity experience.”
“Together with Heads Up Technologies, we offer in the Ten a cabin and cabin management system designed top to bottom for productivity,” Pelton said. “We surround all this productivity with new styling, more space, new seats, new lighting and more stowage – frankly more options all around to easily meet demanding customer requirements.”
“I am very comfortable referring to our new Citation Ten CMS as revolutionary,” Pelton said.
Technology is the foundation of the Citation Ten CMS. Designers opted for exclusive use of fiber optics instead of the more commonly used copper cable, not only providing sufficient bandwidth for system growth but greatly reducing aircraft weight. This size aircraft requires almost 200 feet of cable for the CMS; a fiber optic backbone weighs less than one-tenth what a copper cable system weighs. Aircraft using current technology CMS architectures carry extra cable – and extra weight – to accommodate future system expansion; if not, expansion is limited. The Citation Ten’s fiber optic architecture is scalable, both for system growth and for various aircraft.
The Cessna CMS features an interactive, touch-screen system controller at each passenger seat for audio (digital media, MP3/iPhone), video (digital, Blu Ray), interactive moving map, cabin temperature, lights, window shades and even cabin diagnostics. The dual club-seat cabin arrangement also includes 110 or 220 volt electrical outlets and multiple USB/device inputs. High-speed Internet browsing, satellite radio and cabin Wi-Fi are available as options.
The Cessna CMS trip computer includes an interactive moving map with a global database featuring standard features like flight data displays and location indicator, and also offers access to points of interest information.
The new Citation Ten cabin mock-up is on display this week during NBAA at Cessna’s static aircraft display at Atlanta’s DeKalb Peachtree Airport (KPDK) following an unveiling on Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 1 p.m. (EDT).

EADS North America KC-45 tanker program benefits from the first flight of third Australian A330 MRTT
The maturity of the EADS North America KC-45 program has been further reinforced with the maiden flight of Australia’s third mission-equipped Airbus Military A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT). EADS North America is offering an A330 MRTT-based tanker to the U.S. Air Force as the KC-45, and is the only competitor offering the Air Force a tanker that is already flying, refueling and fully certified today.
Airbus Military will begin deliveries of A330 MRTTs this year to its first operator, the Royal Australian Air Force.
The first two A330 MRTTs built for Australia have performed more than 1,300 aerial refueling contacts and transferred more than one million pounds of fuel, using the same advanced Aerial Refueling Boom System (ARBS) and digital under-wing refueling pods offered on the KC-45. The Australian aircraft also is configured with a Link 16 real-time data link for airborne connectivity, along with a directional infrared countermeasures (DIRCM) system, among other defensive systems.
The third Australian A330 MRTT was converted to its tanker/transport configuration by Qantas Engineering in Brisbane, Australia – underscoring the company’s ability to successfully transfer A330 MRTT production and outfitting around the world. The KC-45 variant of the A330 MRTT will be built at a new American aerospace center of excellence that will be constructed in Mobile, Alabama.
“Every day, the A330 MRTT program is demonstrating that our KC-45 offers the U.S. Air Force a tanker solution that is in production, flying today and proven,” said EADS North America Chairman Ralph D. Crosby, Jr. “We are ready to bring the only real tanker in the Air Force competition to the U.S., where it will be built by 48,000 Americans.”
During the four-hour maiden flight for the newest Australian A330 MRTT, the aircraft reached an altitude of 41,000 feet and performed a series of preplanned trials of test equipment, handling qualities, performance and systems in a full range of mission situations. This is the fifth A330 MRTT currently flying, including two aircraft for the United Kingdom’s Royal Air Force.
The A330 MRTT is in production today for four U.S. allies. Australia, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have ordered a total of 28 MRTTs. It has won every head-to-head competition with Boeing’s KC-767 tanker – including the U.S. Air Force competition in 2008.

Supersonic business jet developer Aerion gets supersonic test results
Aerion Announces Details of Recent Supersonic Flight Tests Reno, Nevada, October 18, 2010 – Aerion Corporation announced at this week’s National Business Aviation Association Annual Meeting and Convention (booth 6202) additional detail and preliminary results relating to a new round of flight tests in collaboration with NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center. These tests, which took place in July and August 2010 and achieved a top speed of Mach 2.0, mark the latest milestone in preliminary engineering activities for the world’s first supersonic business jet (SBJ).
“Test flights this past summer are tangible proof that Aerion is leveraging all available assets to continue refining technology that will be applied to our planned supersonic business jet,” said Aerion Vice Chairman Brian Barents. “We thank our investors and preliminary customers for their continued support, as well as NASA’s Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate for their unique testing expertise and facilities. Aerion remains convinced of the need not just to fly farther and in greater comfort, but much quicker as well.”
Data gained from the initial series of five data flights aboard a NASA F-15B aircraft are being analyzed by comparing the static pressures recorded at 60 points on the flat plate at varying speeds and altitudes with those predicted by aircraft computer models, including the test pylon and flat plate test article. Engine inlet parameters are included in the model and adjustable to achieve the best fit with the measured pressures during the F-15B tests.
This process has been completed and the design of a test article to be used in the next series is well along. The design goals include achieving maximum extent of supersonic laminar flow, confirmation of its robustness under realistic conditions and crossflow pressure gradients. When the aerodynamic optimization of the new test article has been completed, mechanical design and fabrication to NASA flight test criteria will be carried out by Aerion. Then, after ground and flight qualification tests by NASA, the second phase of the tests will be performed. “Future tests will evaluate supersonic boundary layer transition properties as they relate to manufacturing standards for surface quality and assembly tolerances, both crucial to future production of Aerion’s supersonic business jet,” said Dr. Richard Tracy, the company’s chief technology officer.
Aerion’s SBJ, designed to carry 8-12 passengers efficiently at high subsonic as well as supersonic speeds, has attracted roughly 50 letters of intent with accompanying deposits for the $80 million aircraft. This $4 billion order book has remained relatively constant, despite recent economic volatility. The company is engaged in ongoing talks with business aviation original equipment manufacturers; aircraft deliveries would begin five to six years from the formation of a joint venture to cover the rest of SBJ development, production, certification, sales and support.

SUPERSONIC NLF CONCEPT
Aerion’s straight-wing, natural laminar flow design, coupled with proven engines from Pratt & Whitney, enable sustained and efficient supersonic cruise up to Mach 1.6. Aerion’s natural laminar flow wing reduces total airframe drag by up to 20 percent versus previous delta wing technology.
That reduction creates a virtuous circle, allowing the Aerion jet to cruise on less power, requiring less fuel and therefore a lower overall weight.
The NLF wing enables fuel efficient subsonic cruise speeds between Mach .95 and .99, and allows for boomless cruise up to Mach 1.1.
A straight-wing, natural laminar flow design provides benefits at the low and slow end of the speed envelope, as well. Approach and landing speeds will mirror those of today’s larger business jets, allowing routine access to runways of no more than 6,000 feet.

Eurocopter se adjudica el mantenimiento en tercer escalón de helicópteros el Ejército del Aire por 2,5 millones de euros
The EVS capability enhances situational awareness for pilots during approach, landing, taxi and takeoff by presenting an image of the external environment on the Head-up Guidance System (HGS) and head-down displays.
The system uses an infrared sensor to improve the pilots' view of the runway in various conditions including bad weather. This aids pilots to avoid terrain and clearly identify the runway, including any obstructions, early in the approach. It also assists pilots with "black hole" approaches to airports not equipped with precision landing aids and with landing and maneuvering at unfamiliar airports.
"I had the pleasure of flying several of the flights during the EVS development flight-test program with the Air National Guard and the Rockwell Collins team. That experience gave me the chance to see the EVS advantages first hand," said Steve Taylor, Boeing Business Jets president.
"Given the variety of destinations visited by most BBJ operators, the improved situational awareness that EVS provides can be a great advantage," said Taylor.

Installation of the EVS system on BBJs requires that the airplanes receive an upgrade to the HGS 4000, a modified radome, and the infrared camera.

Nace la Asociación Española de Fabricantes de Equipos de Asistencia en Tierra para Aeronaves (AEFEATA)
José Carlos Gallego, director regional en España de JBT, presidirá la Junta Directiva de AEFEATA, de la que Denis Philip Maguire, director comercial de Einsa, es vicepresidente, Luis Gorris, director general de Talleres Electromecánicos Gorris TEMG, secretario y José Luis Langa, director general de Langa Industrial, vocal. Según se determina en los estatutos de la Asociación, la Asamblea General, integrada por todos los asociados, será su órgano supremo de gobierno. Cualquier otra empresa española cuya actividad se enmarque en la fabricación de equipos de asistencia en tierra para aeronaves podrá integrarse en AEFEATA previa solicitud y aprobación por parte de la Junta Directiva.
Los estatutos de la Asociación determinan tres clases de asociados, los fundadores, los de número, es decir los que ingreses tras haber sido ésta constituida, y los de honor, nombrados como tales por la Junta Directiva en reconocimiento a su prestigio o contribución relevante a los fines de AEFEATA.
El sector del handling español es uno de los más importantes del mundo, la actividad de estos operadores, clientes de los fabricantes de equipos GSE, está regulada por AENA, el gestor estatal aeroportuario que otorga las licencias de operación en la totalidad de los aeropuertos públicos españoles. El cumplimiento de la normativa europea, relativa al respeto medioambiental en los aeropuertos, cuyas directrices AENA recogió en los pliegos del concurso del año 2006 a que están sometidos los actuales operadores de handling, afectó directamente a los requisitos exigibles a la flota de equipos de asistencia en tierra para aeronaves y supuso una fuerte inversión tecnológica por parte de los fabricantes a fin de adaptarse a las nuevas exigencias.
Esta situación, unida a los efectos de la fuerte competencia que se ha generado entre los operadores de handling, tras la concesión de nuevas licencias en 2006, y en el marco de crisis general que todavía azota al sector del transporte aéreo, a tres años de la renovación del concurso para otorgar nuevas licitaciones, ha impulsado la formación de la Asociación Española de Fabricantes de Equipos de Asistencia en Tierra para Aeronaves. AEFEATA aspira a defender los intereses comunes y posicionar correctamente en el futuro a un sector que da empleo directo en España a más de 500 trabajadores, proponiendo acciones de colaboración con AENA y con las compañías de handling encaminadas a lograr una salida común satisfactoria para todas las partes, afectadas por la crisis global y local del sector.

Emirates challenges rivals, aims for 120 A380s
Emirates, which surprised the aviation world by lifting its orders of the world's largest airliner by a third to 90 aircraft in June, is only constrained by a shortage of space to park them, airline president Tim Clark said.

Efficient STOL transports for the future
Traditional STOL aircraft cannot fly that fast, and the Speed Agile concepts use integrated lift systems to reduce drag. Defensa presenta un documento que encauza la innovación tecnológica en función de las capacidades militares demandadas
La Dirección General de Armamento y Material define cuatro ejes de actuación:
- Eje tecnológico: realización de un análisis tecnológico que permita establecer los objetivos a alcanzar, metas tecnológicas agrupadas en seis áreas: Armamento, ISTAR, Plataformas, Protección de personal, Protección de Plataformas e Instalaciones y TICs.
- Eje de cooperación: establecimiento de acuerdos de colaboración con otros ministerios como Ciencia e Innovación y con el Centro para el Desarrollo Tecnológico Industrial (CDTI).
- Eje de información: Iniciativas encaminadas a la difusión de la información y conocimiento mutuo entre distintos agentes. Entre distintas actuaciones, se creará un portal web como foro de comunicación y conocimiento entre los agentes involucrados y se potenciará la difusión del Boletín de Observación Tecnológica en Defensa.
- Eje de mejora continua: evaluación y seguimiento del retorno de las actividades de I+T y cumplimiento de objetivos. El retorno se cuantificará por medio de una métrica que contemple el impacto de dichas inversiones sobre la mejora tecnológica de las capacidades militares, la eficiencia económica, la mejora de la competitividad y el desarrollo del tejido industrial.

Ricardo’s Wolverine3 UAV heavy fuel engine takes to the sky at Nevada test site
The Ricardo Wolverine3 is a 3.1 horsepower, two-cylinder, two-stroke, air-cooled engine with spark ignition, direct fuel injection and 500 watts of on-board power. It is designed to power lightweight, tactical UAVs. For its first flight, the Wolverine3 was integrated into a Nightwind 2 aircraft, built by Unmanned Aerial Systems, Inc. (UAS), of Las Vegas. The Nightwind is a blended wing aircraft with 100 percent composite construction and a 2 metre wingspan.
“Tactical UAVs are ideal for surveillance and intelligence gathering missions and the Ricardo Wolverine3 has the potential to transform the role of UAVs on the battlefield by solving the logistical, safety and reliability issues created by today’s gasoline-powered engines,” said Kent Niederhofer, president of Ricardo, Inc.
“The Ricardo Wolverine3 is purpose-built for lightweight tactical UAVs like the UAS Nightwind family but the technology is readily applicable to auxiliary power units and automated ground vehicles, as well as civilian markets like border security and fire-fighting.”
Stephen Cakebread, Ricardo project director, unmanned systems, and architect of the Wolverine3, said the development team brought the engine from concept to an operational, production-representative prototype status in six months and from dynamometer first fire to first flight in less than five months. In that time, Ricardo has applied its full suite of advanced design, modelling, simulation and manufacturing tools. Testing leading up to the first flight included cooling duct optimization, airframe to engine electrical interface, electromagnetic interference (EMI) compliance, engine mount design, lubrication system development, propeller drive, calibration refinement and fuel delivery system development.
“The Wolverine3 design is optimized for performance, low weight, package efficiency and durability and can be integrated into a wide range of UAV designs,” Cakebread said. “We’ll take everything we have learned and apply it to further enhance the Wolverine3 capabilities, and we look forward to expanding the Wolverine family with a range of engines for new and different missions.”

La pala eólica más grande mundo se diseñará en España. Aeroblade, sociedad vasca participada por el grupo Aernnova y el Ejecutivo de Euskadi a través del fondo Ekarpen, ha cerrado el contrato con uno de los 10 principales fabricantes de aerogeneradores internacionales para desarrollar un aspa de 68 metros de longitud.
La operación supone un nuevo reto para Aeroblade. La pala que desarrollará su departamento de ingeniería, y que se montará en aerogeneradores con una potencia superior a los cinco megavatios, se destinará fundamentalmente a los parques eólicos marinos. También se pretende aprovechar las ventajas que ofrecen estas aspas para su instalación en zonas donde el viento sopla con menor intensidad.
Boeing Joins Fuselage Sections for First 747-8 Intercontinental
EVERETT, Wash., Oct. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] moved closer this week toward completing assembly of the first 747-8 Intercontinental as mechanics in Everett, Wash., loaded the forward and aft fuselage sections to join with the wing and center section.
The 747-8 fuselage is 250 feet 2 inches (76.3 meters) long, which is 18 feet 4 inches (5.6 meters) longer than the 747-400. The stretch provides space for 51 additional seats to accommodate 467 passengers in a typical three-class configuration and offers 26 percent more cargo volume.
"Final body join is an important milestone for the 747 program," said Pat Shanahan, vice president and general manager of Airplane Programs in Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "It is a major step toward completing the structural integration and building out our all-new interior. We now have the first real look at the size and distinctive shape of the 747-8 Intercontinental. This is going to be a superb airplane for our customers both from an aesthetic and a performance perspective."
The 747-8 is the new high-capacity 747 that will give airlines the lowest operating costs and best economics of any large airplane while providing enhanced environmental performance. The airplane also features a 787 Dreamliner-inspired interior that will offer passengers a greater feeling of space and comfort.
The 747 program has orders for 109 747-8 Freighter and Intercontinental airplanes. Thirty-three of those are for the 747-8 Intercontinental, with orders coming from Lufthansa, Korean Air and eight VIP customers. The first 747-8 Intercontinental delivery is scheduled for late 2011 to a VIP customer.

Boeing Projects $90 Billion Commercial Airplanes Market in Russia and CIS
New airplane deliveries in the region will be driven largely by the need to retire older, less fuel-efficient single-aisle airplanes and regional jets, as airlines replace them with new-generation, more fuel-efficient models.
"Demand for airplanes also will be fueled by an increase in the number of people flying to, from and within Russia and CIS,” said Randy Tinseth, vice president of Marketing, Boeing Commercial Airplanes, who released Boeing's 2010 CIS market outlook today in Moscow. “We expect passenger traffic for the region to grow at a rate of 4.8 percent on average."
Tinseth said the growing tendency of both business and personal travelers to traverse Russia and CIS will create strong demand for rapid, frequent and reliable coast-to-coast and interregional transportation. Driven by this demand, almost 60 percent of the new deliveries over the next 20 years will be single-aisle airplanes.
Taking retirements of old airplanes into account, the CIS fleet will grow from 1,150 airplanes today to about 1,300 airplanes by 2029.
Boeing forecasts that single-aisle airplanes will grow from 54 percent of the total CIS fleet today to 63 percent of the fleet by 2029. Airlines are increasingly focusing on airplane age as fuel-thirsty, older airplanes weigh increasingly on earnings. Increased attention to aviation's impact on global climate change also will be a factor in selecting airplanes that produce lower carbon emissions.
Newer airplane types such as the Next-Generation 737 offer significant advantages in environmental performance as well as improved capabilities, fuel efficiency and maintenance costs.
Twin-aisle fleets will evolve in the region as airlines continue to expand international point-to-point services to a wider range of airport pairs and frequencies. Small- and mid-sized twin-aisle airplanes will grow to represent 17 percent of the CIS fleet by 2029.
Within the CIS market, Boeing sees a demand for 160 new, efficient twin-aisle airplanes such as the 787 Dreamliner. Twin-aisles will account for 17 percent of total airplane demand in the region over 20 years.
Large airplanes (747-size and larger) will not see significant demand in CIS, accounting for only three percent of all deliveries over the next 20 years. Approximately 30 large airplanes, all freighters, are projected for CIS through 2020.
Boeing also forecasts demand for 200 regional jets in the CIS -- more than 10 percent of the projected world demand. This category will account for 21 percent of the total deliveries of new aircraft. These aircraft will be used to accommodate traffic growth to smaller secondary markets within the region and to replace older aircraft.

Airbus Military inaugura su nuevo Centro de Instrucción en Sevilla / The new Airbus Military Training Centre has been opened today in Seville (Spain).
Este nuevo Centro de Instrucción, fruto de un convenio de colaboración entre la Fundación Andaluza para el Desarrollo Aeroespacial (FADA) y Airbus Military, ya cuenta con dos simuladores, uno para el C295 y otro para el CN235, que replican fielmente la experiencia de vuelo en un avión real.
El simulador del A400M se instalará antes de su entrada en servicio, prevista para 2012. Todos los simuladores pueden recrear una amplia gama de operaciones, entre las que se encuentran actividades especializadas como el vuelo con visión nocturna, despegues y aterrizajes en pistas no preparadas o el lanzamiento de cargas o paracaidistas.
La formación se imparte también en aulas a partir de diferentes dispositivos que se utilizan para la formación de tripulaciones, ingenieros y técnicos para el mantenimiento de la aeronave. De forma adicional, el Centro de Instrucción impartirá formación sobre la operación y mantenimiento del sistema táctico completamente integrado (FITS, por sus iniciales en inglés), que es el corazón de los aviones de vigilancia de Airbus Military. Estas nuevas instalaciones contarán con una plantilla de alrededor de 100 empleados, de los que en torno a 40 ocuparán puestos de nueva creación, y formará a más de mil alumnos cada año.
El centro cuenta con una superficie de 13.000 metros cuadrados construidos en dos plantas. El diseño del edificio ha tomado como modelo la arquitectura local de patios interiores, lo que proporciona abundante luz natural a la mayor parte de las salas y facilita el aislamiento térmico en verano, convirtiéndolo en un edificio ecoeficiente.

The facility is among the most modern in the world with space for six full-flight simulators and a range of other computer-based training devices. It will house Airbus Military’s training provision for the A400M new-generation airlifter as well as its family of light and medium aircraft and military derivatives of commercial models.
Two full-flight simulators, one for the C295 and one for the CN235, which faithfully replicate the experience of flying a real aircraft, have already been installed.
An A400M simulator will be installed prior to the planned entry into service of the aircraft in 2012. All the simulators are capable of representing the full range of operations including specialised activities such as flight with night vision goggles, rough field take-offs and landings, and air-dropping of loads or paratroopers.
A range of other devices for training on specific aircraft systems, including the Fully Integrated Tactical System (FITS) at the heart of Airbus Military’s surveillance aircraft, and in the classroom or over an intranet are also provided. Further devices are dedicated to training engineers and technicians in the maintenance and support of the aircraft.
The new centre has a staff of some 100, of which 40 are new positions, and is expected to train around 1,000 students per year. The two-storey building covers 13,000m2 and is built in the Andalusian style with environmentally friendly internal patios providing natural light and ventilation to most rooms.

"When I look at all issues and all complexities, it's hard to see a meaningful benefit to the industry [from a narrowbody re-engining] other than in terms of the environment and noise emissions. There I see some PR benefit to the outside world, but in terms of bottom-line benefit to owners of the aircraft, to operators of aircraft, it's a very slim margin."

Al grupo de proveedores vascos para el A-350 XWB se ha unido recientemente DMP con un contrato para fabricar el sistema de amortiguación del tren principal de aterrizaje de 475 aviones. La incursión de DMP, con sede en Mendaro (Guipúzcoa), en la lista se suministradores de Airbus, se realizará a través de la francesa Messier Dowty, líder mundial en trenes de aterrizaje. DMP también provee el mismo sistema a Boeing para el B-787 Dreamliner

Los próximos días 25 al 28 de Octubre estaré en Madrid con motivo de las XIV Jornadas de Estudios Históricos organizadas por AENA.

Sukhoi Superjet 100 has successfully passed noise testing program
Being now cleared by AR IAC and EASA, the same aircraft #95004 is undergoing HIRF testing, in the same premises. HIRF testing methodology was elaborated by the SCAC engineering team in collaboration with Alenia Aeronautica, a Finmeccanica Company, and relevant certification authorities.
HIRF certification is required to demonstrate that the aircraft electric and electronic equipments are not influenced by external electromagnetic fields like those produced by a TV or radio station or by a radar. HIRF testing technique consists in radiating the aircraft with radio waves whose frequencies and levels of emission are set by Certification rules. The aircraft can be electrically powered or unpowered, and engines can also run. The electromagnetic fields and currents on cables inside the aircraft are measured during radiation and avionic equipments are kept under control to check for any malfunction. Telemetry is used to monitor aircraft parameters in real time as well as to avoid people exposure to radiation during tests with powered aircraft.

At the present time the first production Su-35S is at the final assembly shop of the KnAAPO. The preparations are underway for its flight testing. The first production Su-35S will be delivered to the Russian Ministry of Defense by the end of the year.
Su-35 is also intended for export sales. Sukhoi is holding talks with customers in South-East Asia, the Middle East and South America anxious to re-arm their air forces on Su-35 sales.
The Su-35 is a thoroughly upgraded super-maneuverable fighter of the 4++ generation. It employs technologies of the fifth generation that assure its superiority over similar class fighters. The special features of the aircraft include a new avionics suite based on digital information control system integrating onboard systems, a new radar with a phased antenna array having a long aerial target detection range with an increased number of simultaneously tracked and engaged targets (30 aerial targets tracked and 8 engaged plus the tracking of 4 and engagement of 2 ground targets), and new enhanced vectored thrust engines. The Su-35 has a diverse suite of long-, medium- and short-range weapons. It can carry guided aerial munitions for anti-radar and anti-ship actions as well as general purpose munitions, and guided and unguided aerial bombs. The radar signature of the fighter has been reduced by several times as compared to that of the fourth-generation aircraft by coating the cockpit with electro-conducting compounds, applying radio absorption coats and reducing the number of protruding sensors. The service life of the aircraft is 6,000 hours flight hours; the life cycle is 30 years of operation. The assigned service life of vectored thrust engines is 4,000 hours.

Sikorsky Innovations Completes Testing of Hub Mounted Vibration System
“HMVS represents a significant improvement in the control of vibration at its source with less weight than conventional vibration treatments,” said Jim Kagdis, program manager for Sikorsky Advanced Programs. “Combined with our active flap technology, this makes the opportunity for a ‘jet-smooth’ ride a practical reality. Our plan is to install and test flight this vital technology on a Sikorsky helicopter in the next 12 months. We expect to drive this technology into all our products once its commercialization is complete.”
“Vibration, even at the low levels Sikorsky has been able to achieve, takes a toll on crew and passengers as well as the aircraft,” said Mark Miller, Vice President, Research & Engineering. “With the HMVS breakthrough technology, occupants will experience less fatigue and enhanced safety. In addition, operating costs will decrease because equipment will last longer in a virtually zero-vibration environment.”
The key development team member for the project is the LORD Corporation of Cary, North Carolina.

Bell Helicopter AH-1Z Earns Navy Recommendation for full Fleet Introduction
On Sept. 24, the Navy's Aviation program office (NAVAIR) for H-1 Upgrades received official notification from the Navy's Commander Operational Test and Evaluation Force that its AH-1Z helicopters were found to be "operationally effective and suitable" and were recommended for fleet introduction.
"We are pleased and proud that the AH-1Z has completed its operational evaluation," said John Garrison, president of Bell Helicopter. "The AH-1Z is a remarkable aircraft that is only made stronger by the Marine aviators that fly them. We are excited that our warfighters will receive the full benefit of this awesome machine."
The Marine Corps is replacing the two-bladed AH-1W with the AH-1Z, which features a new, four-bladed composite rotor system, performance-matched transmission, four-bladed tail rotor, upgraded landing gear and a fully integrated glass cockpit.
A total of 189 new and remanufactured AH-1Z helicopters are anticipated, with deliveries expected to be complete by the end of 2019.
The AH-1Z Cobra helicopters are part of the U.S. Marine Corps H-1 Upgrade Program. The program's goal is to replace AH-1W helicopters with new and remanufactured AH-1Zs which provide significantly greater performance, supportability and growth potential over their predecessors.
The H-1 Upgrade Program offers 84 percent commonality of parts between the AH-1Z and UH-1Y utility helicopters. This commonality reduces lifecycle and training costs and decreases the expeditionary logistics footprint for both aircraft.
