Air Arabia selects Sharklets for its new A320 fleet

Airbus' new large wingtip devices to enhance performance of Air Arabia's A320s
6 April 2011 Press Release

Air Arabia (PJSC), the first and largest low-cost carrier in the Middle East and North Africa, has selected Sharklets for 28 out of 44 A320 aircraft ordered by the airline. Deliveries of these Sharklet-equipped Airbus aircraft will begin from the second quarter of 2013.

Delivery of Air Arabia's order of 44 Airbus A320s (34 placed in 2007 and 10 in 2008) has already started in the last quarter of 2010 and will make the carrier one of the region's largest A320 operators with one of the most modern single-aisle fleets.

"Air Arabia is on the path of a reasonable expansion, in-line with the company's vision to become one of the world's leading airlines in terms of eco-efficiency, profit margin, innovation, and operational excellence. This new order will further contribute to the airline's operational efficiency when we take delivery of the first Sharklet-equipped A320s in 2013," said Adel Ali, Board Member and Group CEO of Air Arabia.

"We are delighted that Air Arabia has taken the opportunity to maximise the capability and efficiency of its future A320 fleet by equipping them with our fuel-saving Sharklets," said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers. "The popular A320 Family already has the best reliability, highest revenue-generation and the lowest operating costs of any single-aisle aircraft in its class, and with the new Sharklets, customers like Air Arabia will benefit even more," he adds.

Sharklets were launched for development in 2009. These new wingtip devices are around 2.5 metres tall and further enhance the efficiency of the popular A320 Family by replacing the aircraft's current wingtip fence. Offered as an option on new-build aircraft from the end of 2012, the devices reduce fuel burn particularly over longer sectors. As well as increasing payload-range and improving take-off performance, Sharklets result in around 3.5 percent reduced fuel burn over longer sectors, corresponding to an annual CO2 reduction of around 700 tonnes per aircraft.

Air Arabia already operates a large fleet of new and leased A320s. From its main hubs, Sharjah in the UAE, Casablanca in Morocco, Alexandria in Egypt, the carrier serves a network of more than 65 international routes across Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa.

The A320 Family (A318, A319, A320 and A321) is recognised as the benchmark single-aisle aircraft family. Nearly 7,000 Airbus A320 Family aircraft have been ordered and more than 4,600 delivered to more than 320 customers and operators worldwide, making it the world's best-selling commercial jetliner ever.

Aircraft Interiors Expo 2011: Cabin flexibility throughout the Airbus Family for added customer value

Reveal of new lavatory concept freeing-up space for more seats on A320 Family cabin

5 April 2011 Press Release

Airbus once again showcases its cabin innovations at this years' Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg, Germany. The leading manufacturer presents a market research mock-up of a space-saving rear lavatory and galley concept for the A320 Family for the first time.

Called Space-Flex, the concept makes more efficient use of the volume at the rear of the cabin. The result: two lavatories plus a galley can now be accommodated in this space, offering airlines the possibility to install up to three more revenue-generating seats in the cabin and/or to improve seat pitch. One of the Space-Flex lavatories provides full access for 'Persons with Reduced Mobility' (PRM) through a simple conversion process: an industry first on a single-aisle aircraft.

Another key to cabin flexibility, the A350 XWB enabling platform, is impressively demonstrated at the Airbus booth. Standard interfaces designed to accommodate a wide variety of operator needs and cabin furnishings based on modular designs combine to facilitate the customization of the cabin and allow airlines to reconfigure their cabin in service more easily than before.

The A380 display underlines the unmatched passenger appeal of the world's biggest passenger aircraft. With more than 40 aircraft in service, the A380 is getting overwhelmingly positive passenger feedback and brings operators higher load factors and increased revenues.

Airbus' SPICE galley project (ace nnovative atering quipment) has been making steady progress during 2010. After revealing the operational prototype at last years' Aircraft Interiors Expo, Airbus will present the progress of user trials performed at a full-scale test facility in Toulouse, demonstrating full cabin service for up to 200 passengers. The space-saving catering system improves crew working conditions at the same time as saving hundreds of kilograms of weight and generating space for additional revenue seats.

Airbus space-efficient concepts go beyond new products. Airbus Upgrade Services will present its range of retrofit solutions and services. Cabin experts and students or young talents can inform themselves about career opportunities at Airbus and personally talk to human resources representatives.

The Airbus stand is located in hall 7, booth number 7D20.

South Africa accepts first five upgraded Rooivalks for operational use

PROUDLY SOUTH AFRICAN ROOIVALK HANDED OVER TO SA AIR FORCE

The upgraded Rooivalk combat support helicopter has been handed over to the South African Air Force for operational duties.

The helicopter, designed and manufactured in South Africa, was received by the Chief of the SA Air Force, Lt Gen Carlo Gagiano.

The Chief Executive Officer of Denel, Talib Sadik, says the handover is the culmination of 25 years of research, development and high-technology manufacturing.

"This is a product that the South African public can be proud of – locally designed, locally manufactured and, now, ready for deployment by our local Air Force," says Sadik.

Lt Gen Gagiano says the Rooivalk will contribute significantly to the ability of the SAAF to fulfil its mandate in peacekeeping operations and to support the future deployment of South African soldiers.

The handover at the Denel Aviation campus in Kempton Park follows on a rigorous testing and evaluation programme by the SAAF. The first five helicopters will be operational at 16 Squadron, which is based in Bloemfontein. The remaining six will be completed and ready for deployment later this year.

Sadik says the upgraded Rooivalk Mark 1 has been tested at the Air Force's Test Flight and Development Centre (TFDC) since the beginning of November 2010. The evaluation included day and night flight operations, target identification and tracking, cannon firing, and evaluation of the secure communications modes and self-protection features.

"We received very positive reports from both the flying and ground support crews," says Kgobe. "Our upgrade programme for the Rooivalk was completed on track and on schedule."

The Rooivalk project started its design phase in 1984 and had its first flight in April 1990. It attracted world-wide attention for its unique design and capabilities and have been displayed at major international air shows in England, Dubai, Malaysia and Cape Town.

Denel Aviation was responsible for the final modifications to the helicopter to improve its safety and reliability and accuracy of its weapons systems and to complete all outstanding certification flight testing to enable application for a full military type certificate at the Cabinet-agreed deployment baseline.

During the retrofit programme all 11 SAAF production Rooivalk aircraft will be brought up to the Mark 1 standard. The programme includes the significant remanufacturing of certain gearbox mounting components that were found to be out of specification on a number of aircraft.

Kgobe says the recent evaluation included the testing on Rooivalk of the upgraded Mokopa anti-armour guided missile developed by Denel Dynamics. Live firing of the upgraded missile from Rooivalk was done in January this year at the Denel Overberg Test Range.

The missile scored direct hits on targets, both at the long- and short range limits of the missile, demonstrating successful weapons carriage and release from the aircraft, missile target lock-on and missile flight characteristics.

New external fuel tanks now increase the Rooivalk's self-deployment range by 50%. Denel Saab Aerostructures assisted with detailed design of the tanks and is also responsible for manufacturing.

The original Rooivalk was designed as "an attack helicopter and tank killer" to meet the needs of SA Defence Force as it existed in the 1980s, explains Sadik. The changing role of the SANDF, which is now primarily engaged in mandated peacekeeping missions, meant that aircraft systems had to be adapted to meet the new requirements effectively.

"Rooivalk is now a modern, sophisticated, combat support helicopter, ready to be used by the SANDF in any of its potential deployed operations," he says.

Denel Aviation will be responsible for the deeper-level support capabilities to sustain flying operations. This includes all maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) work done on the Rooivalk fleet.

"As design authority and original equipment manufacturer we will ensure that the Rooivalk remains fully operational throughout its assigned life," says Kgobe.

Interjet and Airbus launch Mexican bio-fuel value chain

A320 to make Mexico's first bio-fuel flight
1 APRIL 2011 PRESS RELEASE
Interjet and Airbus are scheduled to conduct the first Jatropha-based bio-fuel flight in Mexico later on Friday using an Airbus A320 aircraft. The bio-fuel is made from locally sourced Jatropha plant harvested in the southern state of Chiapas. The aim of the demonstration flight and the project is to speed up the commercialisation of aviation bio-fuel in Mexico.
The A320 flight is planned from Mexico City’s International Airport to Angel Albino Corzo of Tuxtla Gutierrez airport in the southern State of Chiapas, with one of the two CFM engines using 30% bio-fuel. The Jatropha bio-fuel has been processed by Honeywell’s UOP.
“The test flight is the realisation of a two year ambition for Interjet to develop a production chain for renewable bio-fuel, with the purpose of creating a Mexican platform for sustainable aviation bio-kerosene,” said Miguel Aleman, Interjet President.
"Airbus, Interjet and the many stakeholders involved in making today’s flight a reality, have taken an important step towards establishing an aviation bio-fuel solution that is both commercially viable and environmentally sustainable," said Paul Nash, Airbus Head of New Energies.” This flight serves as evidence that our sector is serious about its commitment to achieve carbon neutral growth by 2020, and a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2050 compared to 2005 levels.”
The project is being supported by Mexico’s Secretariat of Communications and Transportation (SCT), Airports and Auxiliary Services (ASA), the State of Chiapas, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), CFM and Airbus to ensure the bio-fuel meets all specification for flight without any changes to the aircraft or engines. CO2 life cycle studies show that Jatropha has the potential to reduce the overall CO2 footprint by up to 80% over standard aviation kerosene.
Airbus has developed a roadmap working towards making alternative fuel and bio-fuel technology a reality for aviation, while exploring all types of sustainable alternative fuels to find sustainable and local bio-fuel solutions for local communities.

business aviation and private segment with two models on display – a scale 1/10 mock-up of the EC145 Mercedes-Benz Style at stand D26 and a EC135 on static display at Visun Marina.

Exhibiting alongside Airbus, Eurocopter aims to highlight the important role of helicopters as a vital complement to business jets by being the ideal "first mile, last mile" solution.

Bruno Boulnois, CEO of Eurocopter China, sees huge potential in corporate air transport due to the country's vast territory and dense population, "Be it for business or leisure, few can afford to waste precious time for travel in today's world. The flexibility offered by helicopters in take-off and landing is an extremely attractive proposition, and provides that crucial missing link in end-to-end transport solution.

"China's impending airspace reform will facilitate the development of the business aviation
sector, which will see pent-up demand for such products and services being quickly addressed by established companies like Eurocopter. Our helicopters are renowned the world over for its state-of-the-art technology and luxurious interior that is ergonomically designed to provide a well-equipped in-flight office for the ultimate comfort of business travelers," adds Boulnois.

Eurocopter has always been committed to the business aviation market with constant innovation and enhancement made to its fleet to meet the needs of its corporate customers. It offers the widest product range comprising 12 different model types – from light single-engine, light and medium twin-engine, to heavy twin-engine, that can seat from four to 19 passengers in the VIP configuration – hence catering to a wide base of customers from private owners, small and medium enterprises, to multi-national corporations.

The light, single-engine helicopter range comprising EC120, EC130, AS350 B2 and AS350 B3, can seat up to between four and seven passengers, with spacious cabin room and great visibility being some of the much-appreciated features in such light aircrafts. The light and medium twin- engined AS355 NP, EC135, EC145, AS365 N3 and EC155, have proven to be very popular for passenger transport and offshore missions due to its power, state-of-the-art technology and cost efficiency, with the ability to carry up to 12 passengers comfortably in the EC155 which incidentally is also the quietest helicopter in its class. The Super Puma range comprising AS332 and EC225 are in a class of its own in the heavy twin-engine category, having proven its superiority especially in high-altitude conditions, with a big seating capacity of up to 19 passengers. Not forgetting of course, the new medium twin-engine EC175/Z15 – a joint development between Eurocopter and China's AVIC Group. With certifications planned for end 2011, the first delivery of this 16-seater, 7-ton class helicopter is expected in 2012.

Trademark features of Eurocopter VIP-configured helicopters that have been such worldwide
successes include the exceptionally spacious cabin, the large side-sliding doors for passengers' easy access, the substantial luggage storage space loaded easily through the rear clamshell doors, the spectacular view from a generously windowed cabin, the low noise and vibration levels, as well as state-of-the-art technology that delivers outstanding performance in terms of range, speed, reliability and safety.

In addition, Eurocopter also introduced the Stylence family of helicopters, where aesthetics,
ergonomics and advanced technology were merged to provide the ultimate flying experience. Stylence – a combination of style and silence – incorporates extra-thick interior insulation and special flooring to further lower the noise and vibration levels, in-flight office and telecommunications equipment, and luxurious interior with high quality leather upholstery, making the ride truly relaxing and enjoyable. The Stylence package is offered on five different models currently – EC120, EC130, AS350 B2/B3, AS355 NP as well as EC145.

To move with the times and recognizing an increasing demand for an even more unique
travelling experience, Eurocopter has also collaborated with Hermès and Mercedes Benz, two of the world's most renowned brands in fashion and automobile respectively, to create the EC135 Hermès version (known as L'Hélicoptère par Hermès) and the EC145 Mercedes-Benz Style.

These two highly exclusive designer helicopters have been created specially for the discerning luxury travellers today.

As the only helicopter manufacturer with a full-fledged subsidiary in China and having offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Wuhan and Hong Kong, Eurocopter China is well- positioned to cater to the growing needs of the corporate and VIP helicopter market.

"Much like the anticipated growth in private yachts and business jets, the potential of business helicopters in China is huge. Once the low altitude airspace is opened up by the government, we estimate that there will be around 100 VIP helicopters flying in China's airspace within the next 10 years," concludes Boulnois.

Boeing: WTO Ruling Exposes Massive Airbus Advantage From Illegal Subsidies

Trade court rejects nearly 80% of EU claim of improper support for Boeing; finds no U.S. equivalent for billions in illegal European launch aid provided to Airbus

- Final rulings in U.S. and EU cases now public; findings show Airbus received more than $20 billion in impermissible funding versus $2.7 billion for Boeing.
- Boeing reiterates call for Airbus to fund A350 and other new programs on commercial terms, and remedy prohibited export subsidies on the A380

CHICAGO, March 31, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- A World Trade Organization final case ruling published today confirms the massive market advantage Airbus has enjoyed from billions in illegal government subsidies provided to fund the company's commercial airplane product line since its inception more than 40 years ago.

"This WTO ruling shatters the convenient myth that European governments must illegally subsidize Airbus to counter U.S. government assistance to Boeing," said J. Michael Luttig, Boeing (NYSE:BA) executive vice president and general counsel. "The ruling rejects 80 percent of the EU's claims against the U.S., finding no more than $2.7 billion of impermissible subsidies to Boeing not previously remedied. That amount includes $2.6 billion in NASA R&D funding, which is but a small fraction of the total amount challenged," Luttig said.

Today's ruling resulted from the European Union's attempt to counter a U.S. case that successfully challenged illegal subsidies to Airbus. Last June, the WTO upheld approximately 80% of the U.S. claim, finding Airbus had received more than $20 billion in illegal government subsidies, which harmed the U.S. aerospace industry and resulted in the loss of billions in exports and tens of thousands of U.S. jobs.

Illegal government subsidies to Airbus included:

* $1.5 billion in R&D subsidies,
* $1.7 billion in infrastructure subsidies,
* $2.2 billion in equity infusions, and
* $15 billion in launch aid (including $4 billion for the A380) – a subsidy that is unique to Airbus and is the most pernicious and market-distorting subsidy under the law.

"Comparing today's decision with the decision last June reveals a market distorted by Airbus' practices, with illegal launch aid being the key discriminator," Luttig said. "The WTO ruling on launch aid goes to the heart of the Airbus business model, which now must change. In contrast, there are no comparable findings or consequences to the U.S. or Boeing from today's decision, as the WTO has now fully and finally rejected most of the EU's claims."

Both sides may appeal today's ruling. Once any appeal concludes, Boeing will support whatever steps the U.S. government deems necessary to fulfill its WTO obligations, and expects the same commitment to compliance from Airbus and its sponsor governments.

"Illegal launch aid must end. Airbus must take immediate steps to withdraw the outstanding prohibited subsidies provided to the A380, and it must finance the A350 and all other future programs on commercial terms," Luttig said.

"With $16.6 billion of cash on hand, EADS/Airbus can, and now must, develop its products without illegal government subsidies," he added.

Luttig said the WTO had done an outstanding job adjudicating the subsidy dispute.

"An impartial arbiter has spoken, and has set important precedents for all nations with ambitions to grow their aerospace industries. Compliance with WTO rules is essential to fair play and to the public's confidence in the global trading system," he said.

Truth goes public: WTO condemns massive illegal Boeing subsidies

Boeing received “at least $5.3 billion” in “pervasive” and “distortive” subsidies causing $45 billion in harm
31 March 2011 Press Release

The World Trade Organisation (WTO) today publicly condemned the United States for giving Boeing massive illegal subsidies that caused Airbus to lose $45 billion in sales. This follows years of unfounded accusations and attempts to demonise Airbus, especially during the protracted campaign to win the US Air Force contract for Tanker aircraft.

“Finally the truth emerges: Boeing has received and continues to receive subsidies which have a significantly greater distortive effect than the Reimbursable Loans to Airbus, “ said Rainer Ohler, Airbus’ Head of Public Affairs and Communications. “Taking the cases together, the WTO has now specifically green-lighted the continued use of government loans in Europe and ordered Boeing to end its illegal cash support from US taxpayers. It’s time for Boeing to stop denying or minimizing the massive illegal subsidies it gets”.

The WTO-report published today confirms Airbus’s earlier predictions:

1 - Boeing would not have been able to launch the 787 without illegal subsidies.

“What is clear to us is that, absent the aeronautics R&D subsidies, Boeing would not have been able to launch an aircraft incorporating all of the technologies that are incorporated on the 787...” (para. 7.1775)

“[T]he R&D subsidies ... contributed in a genuine and substantial way to Boeing’s development of technologies for the 787.” (paras. 7.1754, 7.1773 and 7.1794).

2 - Boeing has received “at least $5.3 billion” of US taxpayer dollars which has been determined illegal.

“[W]e have estimated that the amount of these subsidies to Boeing’s LCA division was at least $5.3 billion.” (para. 7.1433).

3 - An additional over $2 billion in state and local subsidies that Boeing will receive in the future are illegal.

“[T]he Panel finds that the Washington [tax credits] are specific subsidies to Boeing.” “[W]e recommend that ... the United States ‘take appropriate measures to ... withdraw the subsidy’.” (Paras. 7.302, 8.9).

4 - The effect of the subsidies is significantly larger than the face value of the subsidies in light of their particularly pervasive nature.

“Precisely because the nature of this kind of subsidy is that it is intended to multiply the benefit from a given expenditure, the Panel considers it unlikely that the effects of such expenditure ... would be reducible to its face amount.” (para. 7.1760)

5 - The pervasive subsidies have thoroughly distorted competition within the aviation industry, directly resulting in significant harm to the European aerospace industry.

“[W]e would characterize the NASA R&D subsidies as strategically-focused R&D programmes with a significant and pervasive commercial dimension.” (para. 7.1764)

“[The subsidies] enabled Boeing to lower its prices beyond the level that would otherwise have been economically justifiable.... [T]his led to it securing sales that it would not otherwise have made, while in other cases, it led to Airbus being able to secure the sale only at a reduced price. (para. 7.1818)

6 - The effect of these subsidies will continue in the future, putting Airbus at a significant disadvantage.

“We note further that, to the extent that these subsidies have enabled Boeing to win sales from Airbus in the past, they have served to entrench Boeing as the incumbent supplier, thereby putting it at an important switching cost advantage over Airbus in future sales.” (para. 7.1818)

“Boeing has shot themselves in the foot with the WTO proceedings,” indicates Rainer Ohler. “The company has achieved a massive condemnation of its U.S. funding mechanisms – provided the U.S. is willing to implement the ruling - while the European mechanism has been approved as a legal instrument. The only result of this anachronistic battle is that it limits America’s and Europe’s ability to compete with emerging competitors that have access to unlimited government funding.”

Airbus is pleased with the findings of the WTO report, but understands that the European Commission may appeal a number of issues relating to legal interpretation. Airbus fully supports the European Commission in this respect.

Spanish Government, Iberia, and Airbus launch bio-fuel initiative

'Value chain' to study bio-fuel production to reduce CO2 emissions
Blagnac,  30 March 2011

The Spanish government, Iberia Airlines and Airbus have signed an agreement to develop a complete Spanish 'value chain' for sustainable and renewable aviation bio-fuel for commercial use. Other key members are expected to join the agreement shortly.

Signatories to the agreement signed in Madrid include Isaías Táboas, Spain's Transport Secretary of State, Suárez, Antonio Vazquez, Iberia Airlines Chairman, and Tom Enders, Airbus President and CEO.

The agreement promotes and backs initiatives to develop a complete bio-fuel production chain for Spanish aviation, using sustainable resources from production to consumption in commercial aviation, with special consideration on economic and technical analysis.

"The implementation of biofuels by the Spanish aviation industry for the development of a complete Spanish "value chain" is a goal that will reduce our dependency on fossil energy, make our companies more competitive by reducing costs associated to CO2 and create value and wealth in other sectors of our national economy," said Isaías Táboas. "We are fully confident that both, the public and private sector can cooperate in the development and implementation of this initiative."

"Climate change is a major challenge for our industry. The aviation sector's ambitious CO2 reduction target is only possible if bio-fuels become a reality. Under this initiative, Iberia brings extensive experience in flight operations and in aircraft maintenance to perform the necessary tests that will make this goal a reality", said Antonio Vazquez.

Airbus' focus is on providing expertise and management of the feasibility, life cycle and sustainability analysis.

"Biofuels are a must for aviation to achieve our industry's ambitious CO2 reduction targets. In fact, we believe that biofuels should primarily be reserved for aviation as our industry has no other viable alternative energy source," said Tom Enders. "All industry players including governments have a role in helping to reduce global CO2 emission levels. Airbus is supporting value chains to accelerate the commercialisation of aviation bio-fuels."

The value chain brings together farmers, oil-refiners and airlines to spearhead the commercialisation of sustainable bio-fuel production. Phase one of the project will be the feasibility study. Phase two, will narrow down the most promising solutions to a demonstration level, and phase three from 2014 onwards will look at implementation and scaling up of the production process.

The initiative is being lead by the Air Safety State-Agency (AESA) and the Services and Studies for Air Navigation and Aeronautical Safety/Observatory of Sustainability in Aviation (SENASA/OBSA), under the Ministries of the Environment, of Public works and of the Industry.

Airbus CEO Tom Enders calls for investment in the future

Sustainable aviation at the heart of a thriving European economy
Blagnac,  30 March 2011

Speaking at a major EU summit in Madrid, Airbus President and CEO, Tom Enders, urges Europe "to invest in improving an infrastructure that so much of the world's economic and social development relies on".

The Airbus CEO's comments follow the launch of The European Aviation Vision 2050, an aspirational roadmap of how the sector will handle 16 billion passengers and 400 million tonnes of cargo annually (1). Airbus has been involved in developing the vision, which highlights the need for investment in education and research to meet global demand for a sustainable and greener transport network.

The European Aviation Vision 2050, aims to reduce CO2 by 75%, NOx by 90% and noise by 65%, compared to levels in 2000, while handling around 25 million flights per year within Europe. It suggests that by then 90% of travellers will be able to complete European journeys in four hours and that flights will arrive within one minute of planned arrival times, reducing flight times and fuel burn due to air traffic congestion.

Enders added: "The implementation of fuel saving technology in our aircraft has allowed us to satisfy a 45% increase in demand for air transport over the last decade with only a 3% increase in the use of jet fuel. Innovation has allowed us to do more with less, but these ambitious goals set out by this Vision need investment and action now in order to safeguard Europe's position as a leader in sustainable aviation, in a changing economic and political landscape," says Enders.

"Aviation supports 33 million jobs and 8% GDP. It is imperative that our investment in air transport reflects the huge economical and social benefits it brings", Enders concludes.

The Vision 2050 echoes the findings of the Airbus Passenger 2050 global survey, which reveals that seven out of 10 people expect to fly more, in greener aircraft and with access to their 'digital world'. "The future of aviation must take into account technological advances, but also passenger demands", says Enders. "Air traffic demand doubles every 15 years and as more people travel by air, it will take huge step change advancements to handle this increase in traffic while simultaneously preserving our environment."

The survey is part of The Future by Airbus initiative, which aims to promote debate about the challenges and choices faced by the industry as it seeks to look to the future.
