Tecnam's four seater P Twenty-Ten took to the skies for the first time today
Aircraft mass was 900kg. Lycoming IO-360 max power was attained with aircraft on the brake: 28,20 inHg MAP, 2680 RPM, no wind. After brake release normal engine behaviour and parameters were recorded and a slight increase in MAP (28,5 inHg) and prop speed (2690 RPM) was noticed. Aircraft acceleration to 50 KIAS took 8 seconds and about 300-350 ft. Effortless rotation and lift off occurred at approximately 60 KIAS.
At 5000 ft 80 KIAS flaps were retracted to UP. Two to three pitch attitude angle degrees increase was set with a progressive modest pull back effort. Indicated airspeed was promptly increasing towards. Engine was then reduced to 20 InHG, 2450 RPM and speed stabilized at 100 KIAS.
Pilot noted that level flight is easily kept once on trim, excellent outer view allows the pilot to have good horizon visual references and that the Garmin PFD provides superb attitude and situational awareness cues.
Longitudinal, lateral and directional static stability were clearly proven at 119 KIAS, 5000 ft.
A progressive levelled deceleration was initiated, 2-3 kts per second. It was possible to stop speed deceleration just by mean of pitch control, manual trim compensation was required since significant effort variation was recorded in the order of 6-8 daN per 20 KIAS of delta. Both lateral and direction controls keep effective and precise, rudder effort definitely lower, but never reversing.
After several canonical flight envelope opening tests were performed, including stalling, a TO flap and a LD flap go around passage were performed followed by a final landing on Capua’s runway 26.
From a 2,5 degrees approach path, LD flap approach at 65 KIAS runway touch down was obtained on the centerline at about 48 KIAS, 30 minutes after take off on Tecnam homebase field.
Marco went on to comment that the P Twenty Tens’ behaviour appears safe and predictable in all investigated speed initial envelope, flight controls are precise and effective, attitudes can be attained with a sufficient precision of 1-2 deg on all axis. Speed and flight controls displacement and effort curves are in the correct sense; pitch trim is (manually) usable and effective. This is a positive characteristic for a school initial trainer a/c, since it may provide very good airspeed delta feedback to student pilots.
The P Twenty Ten brings together an advanced technology all carbon fibre fuselage with a metal wing and stabilator based on the best of TECNAM’s recent P2006T Twin and P2008 offerings, this single engine, 4 seat aeroplane is eagerly anticipated by the General Aviation community.
Utilising both carbon fibre and metal has allowed Tecnam to optimise aerodynamic quality and reliability. Carbon fibre ensures smooth surfaces and allows for an elegance and styling you would expect from Italy. Metal is used for the wing and stabilator to provide further strength and stability.
Powered by a Lycoming IO-360-M1a (‘Lycoming Light’) engine, providing 180HP and 2700RPM. The wing is based on the well-proven NACA63A aerofoil. Through partial tapering, the design brings it close to the optimal lift distribution (elliptical).
The all movable type (stabilator) horizontal tail, a trade mark of all TECNAM aeroplanes, allows for excellent controllability and ‘hands off’ longitudinal stability.
The nose gear is free castering and consists of a tubular steel leg connected to the lower engine mount attachments and is braced by a rubber shock absorber. The landing gear is also faired to minimise drag, whilst ground steering is by differential braking.
The TECNAM P2010 has a high fuel capacity (210lt, 46.2 imp. gal). The fuel tanks are installed in the wing box, behind the main spar, to preserve their integrity in case of an accident. Of course carbon fibre equals a lighter and therefore more fuel efficient aeroplane.
Tecnam has always paid great attention to comfort for both pilots and passengers. The cabin width also allows for a large instrument panel, with its modular design specifically tailored to allow the customer to fit either an analogue or digital instrumentation package.
“It’s been an extraordinarily successful and exciting time for the Tecnam design, production and flight-test teams” said Paolo Pascale, Tecnam’s Managing Director. “The Tecnam P Twenty-Ten further exhibits our commitment to innovation, style and advanced technology and is yet another extension of our passion for flying. Our on-going sales success has resulted in Tecnam delivering a new aeroplane every working day”.

Future vertical lift aircraft to be faster, have smaller logistics footprint
WASHINGTON (Army News Service, April 10, 2012) -- The Army's aircraft of the future will be faster than what the service has now, it will carry more weight, it will require less of a logistical footprint, and officials said it will better do what Army aviation is meant to do: serve the ground commander.
While what is now being called "Future Vertical Lift," or FVL, by the Army is still a concept, its capabilities are already known.
The FVL concept will be "able to support the Army and the ground commanders better than we can do it today," said Maj. Gen. Anthony G. Crutchfield, commander, U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence." I see this aircraft being able to do all the missions that we currently do. I see the aircraft that can do it because it can be scaled. It may be a medium variant, something that is the size of maybe a Black Hawk or an Apache is today, that can do the attack mission, or the assault/lift mission. I see the same aircraft scaled smaller that will be able to do the reconnaissance mission, similar to what a Kiowa Warrior does today."
Crutchfield said it's not known if the FVL concept will end up producing a rotary-wing aircraft, like the Army AH-64 Apache, or a tilt-rotor aircraft like the Marine Corps MV-22 Osprey.
What the FVL will do is perform missions the Army does today with its aviation assets, missions that will not change.
"The vision is that we can have an aircraft that can do all the missions that we currently have," he said. "Our missions will not change. We still will do attack and reconnaissance, we still will do sustainment and troop movements. It's an enduring mission that will not change. I just want to do it better."
The FVL aircraft will perform multiple roles, Crutchfield said, and that means that the end result is that there will be fewer types of aircraft in the Army's fleet. It's also possible that there will be fewer aircraft overall, because a more capable aircraft means that fewer aircraft will be needed.
"Today there are concepts where there are aircraft that we consider rotary wing, that can fly in excess of 300 knots," Crutchfield said. "No other aircraft we have today can fly 300 knots. If you have an aircraft that can fly 300 knots, it can cover more terrain faster, and if you can cover more terrain faster, theoretically, you would need less airframes to do the same type mission."
And because Crutchfield said the idea behind the FVL concept is to have the same aircraft be able to perform multiple missions, the Army will need fewer types of aircraft. That means a smaller number of parts will be needed to sustain the fleet, and a shared pool of maintainers and maintenance equipment. That will result in a reduced cost for logistics.
Crutchfield said that the FVL could come in different sizes, depending on the mission it will perform, but things like engine, drive train, and cockpit components would be the same, common between the two, and swappable.
Today's Army aircraft, Crutchfield said, are capable. But there is a limit to the performance that can be squeezed from them.
"Although we have great aircraft today, the best in the world, no matter how much money we invest in these aircraft of today - the aircraft are not going to fly any faster than they fly right now," Crutchfield said. "They are not going to be able to carry any more payload than they do right now. They will not be able to reduce any of the logistical footprint [more] than they do right now. That's what future vertical lift will do. That's what we see for the Army Aviation force of 2030."
It's expected that this summer, performance specifications for the FVL aircraft will be unveiled. Development of the program is an Army-led, joint program, that includes all military services, including the Coast Guard

Astrium awarded European Space Agency (ESA) contract to continue development of the Ariane 5 ME
- Worth €112 million, this contract will enable the design of the Ariane 5 ME's new sub-systems
- Ariane 5 ME will decrease by 20% costs per kilo carried, thanks to performance earnings of 20% for the same price as the A5 ECA launcher
- The final development phase set to be given the go-ahead at the next ESA Ministerial Council meeting, scheduled for November 2012
Astrium, Europe's leading space technology company, has been awarded a contract by the European Space Agency (ESA) to pursue development of the Ariane 5 Midlife Evolution (A5 ME) launcher. The decision on the final development phase of Ariane 5 ME will be taken by the ESA member states at the upcoming Ministerial Council meeting slated for November 2012.
Ariane 5 ME is a major ESA programme adopted by the Ministerial Council in 2008 and aims to modernise the current Ariane 5 launcher. Based on the "two-in-one launcher" concept, the programme will be capable of placing up to 12 metric tons of payload in geostationary orbit, with two satellites of over five tons being launched in a single flight.
The main upgrade for the Ariane 5 launcher is a new upper stage equipped with a Vinci® restartable cryogenic engine developed by SNECMA (Safran Group). The nose fairing will also be extended by three meters to accommodate larger and heavier payloads.
Ariane 5 ME will thus boost launch capacity by 20% compared to the current Ariane 5 ECA and Ariane 5 ES, for the same price. Meaning costs are reduced by 20% per kilo. Astrium's unique role as an end-to-end prime contractor for Ariane 5 since 2003 has generated the added value that drives down costs.
"This €112 million contract underscores that maturity of the Ariane 5ME programme," said Alain Charmeau, CEO of Astrium Space Transportation. "As prime contractor, Astrium will continue to coordinate the work of more than 30 companies across Europe, with whom we have already completed major phases in the development of a launcher that anticipates the needs of both commercial and European institutional markets."
This new contract, as well as the additional activities currently in the contracting stage, will enable the development of the Ariane 5 ME to continue until the November 2012 ESA Ministerial Council meeting to decide on the start of the next phases in the project.
The ESA awarded Astrium an initial two-year development contract worth €150 million in December 2009.
In December 2011, the ESA validated the Ariane 5 Midlife Evolution launcher project following the Preliminary Design Review. More than 100 European specialists in different fields have approved the development plan and specifications for the various sub-systems of the launcher.
The acceptance of the Preliminary Definition Review, which began on 31 August 2011, was a major step in the launcher validation process, and for the new upper stage in particular, and provided the green light for the Ariane 5 ME development programme.
And lastly, on 12 March, Astrium and Air Liquide announced the creation of EuroCryospace, a strategic partnership that will focus on the development and manufacture of cryogenic fuel tanks, in particular the fuel tank for the upper stage of the Ariane 5 ME, to be produced at a new plant in Bremen.
As soon as the member states make their decision known at the end of 2012, Astrium and its partners will commit to performing the Ariane 5 ME test flight from 2017, allowing Europe to consolidate its access to space.

Boeing Makes 737 MAX Design Decisions
- New-engine variant to offer customers substantial fuel savings in 2017
RENTON, Wash., April 11, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) has made a series of design updates to the 737 MAX to further optimize the new-engine variant's performance.
"The 737 MAX is on-track to deliver substantial fuel-savings to customers starting in 2017," said Beverly Wyse, vice president and general manager, 737 program. "We've made several design decisions that support the performance targets for the MAX and evolve the Next-Generation 737's design within the scope of the 737 MAX program."
Those design decisions include:
- Aft body aerodynamic improvements: The tail cone will be extended and the section above the elevator thickened to improve steadiness of air flow. This eliminates the need for vortex generators on the tail. These improvements will result in less drag, giving the airplane better performance.
- Engine installation: The new CFM International LEAP-1B engines will be integrated with the wing similar to the aerodynamic lines of the 787 Dreamliner engine with its wing. A new pylon and strut, along with an 8-inch nose gear extension, will maintain similar ground clearance to today's 737 while accommodating the larger engine fan. The nose gear door design is altered to fit with this revision.
- Flight control and system updates: The flight controls will include fly-by-wire spoilers, which will save weight by replacing a mechanical system. The MAX also will feature an electronic bleed air system, allowing for increased optimization of the cabin pressurization and ice protection systems, resulting in better fuel burn.
Other minor changes to the airplane include strengthening the main landing gear, wing and fuselage to accommodate the increase in loads due to the larger engines. Boeing will continue to conduct aerodynamic, engine and airplane trade studies as the team works to optimize the design of the airplane by mid-2013.
"We also continue to do work in the wind tunnel to affirm the low- and high-speed performance of the 737 MAX design," said Michael Teal, chief project engineer and deputy program manager, 737 MAX program. "Based on design work and preliminary testing results, we have even more confidence in our ability to give our customers the fuel savings they need while minimizing the development risk on this program."
- A possible revision to the wing tips on the MAX also is being tested in the wind tunnel to see if this new technology could further benefit the airplane.
"Any new technology incorporated into the MAX design must offer substantial benefit to our customers with minimal risk for the team to pursue it," said Teal. "On the 737 MAX we are following our disciplined development process and continue to work on an airplane configuration that will provide the most value for our customers."
Airlines operating the 737 MAX will see a 10-12 percent fuel-burn improvement over today's most fuel efficient single-aisle airplanes and a 7 percent operating cost per-seat advantage over tomorrow's competition.
To date, the 737 MAX has more than 1,000 orders and commitments from 16 customers worldwide.

In addition to the investigative update, NTSB Chairman Deborah A.P. Hersman announced that the agency was issuing a total of seven safety recommendations to make the National Championship Air Races a safer event for pilots and spectators alike.
"We are not here to put a stop to air racing," said Chairman Hersman. "We are here to make it safer."
The safety recommendations address race course design and layout, pre-race technical inspections, aircraft modifications and airworthiness, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) guidance on air racing, the effects of g-forces on pilots, and ramp safety issues. They were issued to the FAA, the Reno Air Racing Association (RARA), and the National Air-Racing Group Unlimited Division.
While the investigation is ongoing, Chairman Hersman provided a detailed interim update that showed that the accident sequence initiated with an upset that preceded the separation of the left elevator trim tab by approximately 6 seconds.
One key safety area highlighted during the investigation is the extensive modifications made to airplanes that race in the unlimited class and the lack of documentation and inspection associated with those modifications. On the Galloping Ghost, modifications included reducing the wing span from about 37 feet to about 29 feet, and significant changes to the flight controls – all designed to increase speed and enhance racing performance.
"Our investigation revealed that this pilot, in this airplane, had never flown at this speed, on this course," said Chairman Hersman. "We are issuing a safety recommendation to ensure that pilots and their modified airplanes are put through their paces prior to race day."
Related findings from telemetry data showed that during the upset; the airplane exceeded the accelerometer's 9-G limit. While the investigation into g-forces and g-tolerance is ongoing, the photographic and telemetry evidence indicates that both the airplane and pilot experienced an unanticipated, rapid onset of high g-forces and appears to support pilot incapacitation.
The fatalities and injuries in this accident draw attention to the course design and layout. The unlimited race course is designed for an average ground speed of 500 miles per hour. As pilots make the final turn toward the home pylon, the trajectory of the airplane is in the direction of the spectators in the box seats and grandstands. The NTSB has recommended that RARA review the current course and consider changes to lessen the exposure to spectators.
