FL Technics, SCAC and SuperJet International sign M.o.U for MRO Services on SSJ100 fleet
Moscow, February 21. FL Technics, a global provider of integrated aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul services, and Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company (SCAC), the Russian civil aviation manufacturer and the developer of the Sukhoi Superjet 100 project, along with SuperJet International, a joint venture between Alenia Aermacchi, a Finmeccanica Company, (51%) and Sukhoi Holding (49%), managing SSJ100 sales and support in the Western markets, earlier today have announced about the execution of a Memorandum of Understanding (M.o.U) for Sukhoi Superjet 100 technical support in Europe and Asia.
According to the agreement FL Technics will become a partner of the SuperJet International Airframe Authorized Service Centers Network and will provide SSJ100 operators with line and base airframe maintenance services. In the nearest future FL Technics will be dedicated to provide line maintenance support to SSJ100 operators located in the South-East Asia.

Sharing our experience and supporting the newest SSJ100 aircraft fleet is an important step in our company's development, particularly in the Asian region. SSJ100 operators can rely on the SuperJet International MRO network for first class line and base on-wing maintenance services. SJI network is built on partnerships with well recognized MRO providers worldwide.

The Sukhoi Superjet 100 (SSJ100) is a state-of-the-art 100-seat new generation jet. Designed, developed and built by Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company (SCAC), a Sukhoi and Alenia Aermacchi company. On May 19th 2008 SSJ100 successfully accomplished its first flight. The Sukhoi Superjet 100 cruises at a Maximum Operating Speed of Mach 0.81 and 40,000 feet. It takes off from a 1,731 meters runway in the basic range and 2,052 meters in the long range. The operating range for the basic version is 3,048 km and 4,578 km for the long range version. Brown University researchers build robotic bat wing
Researchers at Brown University have developed a robotic bat wing that is providing valuable new information about dynamics of flapping flight in real bats.
The robot, which mimics the wing shape and motion of the lesser dog-faced fruit bat, is designed to flap while attached to a force transducer in a wind tunnel. As the lifelike wing flaps, the force transducer records the aerodynamic forces generated by the moving wing. By measuring the power output of the three servo motors that control the robot's seven movable joints, researchers can evaluate the energy required to execute wing movements.

Aena, condenada a pagar casi 8 millones de euros por el cierre del espacio aéreo en 2010:
"Se trata de la primera sentencia definitiva y firme en la que se reconoce la responsabilidad de Aena por el incidente de los controladores aéreos y en la que se desestima la existencia de fuerza mayor alegada por el abogado del Estado", indicó la Asociación Catalana de Agencias de Viajes (ACAV). En este caso y en el resto de demandas presentadas por ACAV, se reclamaba a Aena, como empresa pública, responsabilidad por los daños causados por sus empleados.

Boeing engineers, technical workers split on contract offer
Boeing’s engineers and technical workers returned a split decision after voting on a new four-year contract. According to the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA), engineers accepted the offer and technical workers rejected it, authorizing a strike.
SPEEA said that while Boeing’s offers extended “most elements of the previous contracts—including 5% annual wage pools and no increases to employees for medical coverage—union members found fault with the elimination of the pension for future employees. In its place, Boeing offered a 401(k) retirement package that slashed the retirement benefit 41%. Boeing also refused to ensure existing employees their benefits would not be affected by changes to the Social Security cap on taxable income or raising the Medicare eligibility age. Both are being considered by Congress and would dramatically impact existing retirement packages.

Antonio Padín, Director de Calidad de Airbus Military, ha sido elegido Presidente del Grupo Europeo de Calidad Aeroespacial (EAQG, por sus iniciales en inglés). Su elección tuvo lugar el pasado 6 de febrero con el voto unánime de los 35 miembros de este grupo que integra a las organizaciones de Calidad de las compañías europeas del sector aeroespacial. De este modo, Airbus Military se pone al frente del colectivo europeo que forma parte del Grupo Internacional de Calidad Aeroespacial (IAQG, por sus iniciales en inglés), la asociación de Calidad más importante en el ámbito aeroespacial a nivel mundial.Los integrantes del EAQG son los máximos responsables de Calidad de las principales empresas aeroespaciales de Europa. El objetivo fundamental de esta asociación es el impulso en este territorio de las líneas estratégicas que el IAQG acuerda a nivel global. Esta agrupación es la que certifica a las firmas del sector en todo el mundo para la fabricación, distribución y mantenimiento de aeronaves bajo la normativa del propio IAQG. La Agencia Europea de Seguridad Aérea (EASA, por sus iniciales en inglés) ha reconocido algunas de las normativas de Calidad impulsadas por este grupo, por ejemplo la EN9100, como “medio de cumplimiento” de sus propias regulaciones en el ámbito de la aviación civil. Igualmente, la OTAN también está en proceso de reconocimiento de disposiciones de la IAQG.

As the countdown to first customer delivery progresses, the Airbus Military A400M new generation airlifter has successfully passed a renewed series of cold weather tests in a production-representative configuration. During a week-long deployment to Iqaluit, Canada, the flight test-team demonstrated the capability of equipment such as the cargo system and production-standard engines which were not available during earlier tests in Sweden. Tests conducted over 5 days on Grizzly 5 / msn6 included engine runs after a 24-hour cold-soak to -32°C, use of all the cargo bay equipment, taxying, and a development flight. Sobrevuelos militares... sin ánimo de molestar
En 18 días, el Ejército del Aire tiene que demostrar que está preparado para la protección del espacio aéreo español. ¿Cómo? A través de un ejercicio de defensa aérea que simula la existencia de tres bandos enfrentados y en el que participan prácticamente todas las unidades de combate de la Fuerza Aérea y diferentes medios de Tierra y de la Armada. Se trata del denominado «Ejercicio Sirio», las maniobras más importantes que se realizan anualmente y que buscan adiestrar y evaluar a los participantes a lo largo y ancho del espacio aéreo peninsular. Un ejercicio de «planeamiento y toma de decisiones» que cubre numerosas operaciones y posibles situaciones «que un Estado Mayor podría encontrase en una operación de respuesta a una crisis», asegura el Ejército del Aire en un comunicado.

Sukhoi Superjet 100 MSN 95032 will start test program in the nearest future. The test program will last for 3-4 months and after the tests are over the documents to be submitted to IAC AR. SSJ100LR is supposed to receive certification in 2014.
SSJ100LR maximum range is 4 578 km. SSJ100 range is 3 048 km. Required runway length for SSJ100LR is 2 052 meters.

Lufthansa opens tender for 100 narrowbodies, eight widebodies
Boeing and Airbus are now entering into discussions with Lufthansa to claim newly-authorised orders for eight widebody aircraft and 100 single-aisle aircraft, the German flag carrier says today.
Lufthansa's supervisory board in a meeting earlier today cleared the company's executives to begin the negotiations with the airframers.
Lufthansa currently operates a mix of Airbus and Boeing widebodies and narrowbodies, but plans to phase out a fleet of 17 Boeing 737-300s and 22 737-500s by 2016.

Jetstar Japan, one of Japan’s low-cost carriers (LCC), has taken delivery of its first Airbus A320 aircraft equipped with Sharklet fuel saving wing tip devices, becoming the first Japanese carrier for the type.
Sharklets are an option on new-build A320 Family aircraft, and standard on all members of the A320neo Family. The new wingtip devices measure 2.4 metres tall, replacing A320’s current wingtip fence. They offer the flexibility to A320 Family operators of either adding around 100 nautical miles more range or increased payload capability of up to 450 kilogrammes.
“We are very happy to be the first operator of the latest version of the cost efficient A320 in Japan” Jetstar Japan President Miyuki Suzuki said. “The new Sharklet-equipped A320 will help us to save on fuel costs and allow us to continue to offer low fares to our customer.”

Jetstar Japan operates an all-Airbus fleet of seven leased A320s, and this will grow to 24 aircraft by the end of 2014.

Piaggio pressents its new UAS in IDEX 2013
Piaggio Aero Industries, together with Selex ES, today presented at IDEX 2013, the Piaggio Aero P.1HH "HammerHead" - Unmanned Aerial System (UAS).
The P.1HH "HammerHead" programme objective is the development of a multipurpose state-of-the-art Unmanned Aerial System designed to meet the need for a robust and high-tech solution for Intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions (ISR). The Piaggio Aero P.1HH Unmanned Aerial System includes an unmanned aircraft platform, specific mission equipment and systems and a remote Ground Control Station (GCS).
After two years of development, the P.1HH "HammerHead" UAV has been rolled out and it successfully completed its first engine start and run way taxi on 14th February at an Italian Air Force base. The Piaggio Aero P.1HH - UAS first flight is scheduled for this year following the completion of the Vehicle Control & Management System integration and the ground test programme.
The Piaggio Aero P.1HH aircraft features automatic take-off and landing capabilities and is able to fly at up to 45,000 feet, with an outstanding endurance of 16 flight hours. The Piaggio Aero P.1HH "Hammer Head" UAV will also be compliant with the STANAG USAR 4671 standards that enable it to fly both in restricted and unrestricted flight areas.
Like the Piaggio Aero MPA - Multirole Patrol Aircraft - presented in July 2012, the Piaggio Aero P.1HH "HammerHead" unmanned aircraft - part of the P.1HH Unmanned Aerial System - is a derivative of the Piaggio Aero P.180 Avanti II platform newly designed for multi mission purposes such as aerial, land, coastal, maritime and offshore security, COMINT/ELINT missions, and electronic warfare.
The P.1HH "HammerHead" unmanned aircraft's main features are an enhanced airframe, increased aerodynamic configuration with a reinforced wing providing an increased surface and higher aspect ratio. The aerodynamic configuration is based on the development of new wings providing a 15,5 m wing span with the subsequent modification of the previous P.180 aerodynamic design but maintaining Piaggio Aero's patented 3 lifting surfaces configuration now employed in roles and applications that the Piaggio Aero's P.180 designers only envisioned.
The P.1HH "HammerHead" aircraft features a removable external section wing in order to guarantee easy ground transportation and provide operational flexibility in any environment. This modified aerodynamic configuration underwent extensive low speed/high speed wind tunnel testing to validate both its design and performance.
The P.1HH "HammerHead" aircraft will be remotlycontrolled from a autonomous mission control ground station (GCS) by both a Line Of Sight (LOS) and Beyond Line Of Sight (BLOS) satellite communication system. The Piaggio Aero UAS features a state of the art Vehicle Control & Management System (VCMS) combined with a sophisticated Air Data Terminal (ADT) and a customised Mission Management System (MMS) for the control of all mission specific equipment.
The P.1HH "HammerHead" unmanned aircraft is powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6-66B turboprop engines, rated at 950 shp, and features newly designed, low noise Hartzell 5 curved blades propellers. The propulsion system will be remote-controlled by an engine interface unit which is part of the P.1HH Vehicle Control and Management System.

Piaggio Aero has selected Selex ES, a Finmeccanica company, for the development of the Mission Management System, , the Vehicle Management and control System, air Data Terminal and the Ground Control Segment for the Piaggio Aero P.1HH "Hammer Head" UAS. Selex ES has been selected as the Piaggio Aero UAS systems partner after an extensive international evaluation process.
Selex ES grants to Piaggio Aero an outstanding contribution thanks to its capabilities, products and experience in developing UAS surveillance systems, contributing mainly with its avionics and mission system, its sensor suite featuring SeaSpray 7300E Radar, Comms and Data Link solutions, cooperating with Piaggio Aero for effective integration.

São José dos Campos, Brazil, February 15, 2013 – In the wake of November’s highly successful maiden flight of the Legacy 500, the first, full fly-by-wire midsize business aircraft in the corporate aircraft industry, Embraer Executive Jets’ second Legacy 500 made its maiden flight today, officially entering the flight test and certification program.
“The test program is proceeding as planned and now that Serial Number Two has flown, the test campaign will accelerate for this break-through midsize jet,” said Ernest Edwards, President, Embraer Executive Jets. “The initial flight test feedback has been very favorable. The aircraft and systems overall performance is above expectation.”
The Legacy 500 has flown more than 44 hours in 23 flights since its first flight on November 27, 2012. Initial envelope clearances, including flying qualities, systems evaluation and Engine/APU air starts, have been completed. In late January, the aircraft performed a series of natural stalls with expected results. Reports indicate that systems, performance and flying qualities are excellent.
The second Legacy 500 prototype will be dedicated primarily to aircraft systems development and certification. The test program, as well as numerous other work that continues in tandem with the flight test program, is designed to ensure the maturity of the Legacy 500, its systems, interior and customer support before the aircraft enters service in 2014. The maturity program ensures customers will have the smoothest possible entry into service.
As the first midsize clean-sheet design in 15 years, the Legacy 500 is the only midsize business aircraft with full fly-by-wire technology, resulting in complete envelope protection, which improves safety, efficiency and passenger comfort. It has the longest range in its class at 3,000 nautical miles and represents the next generation of midsize corporate jets. It is the first midsize jet with a full, six-foot, stand-up cabin with flat floor and an award-winning interior design for the largest cabin in its class. It is the only midsize jet with a wet galley. It offers the best high-speed cruise and the best cabin pressurization at 6,000 feet.

Boeing, ADASI Sign Teaming Agreement for Unmanned Aircraft Systems
ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates, Feb. 18, 2013 -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Abu Dhabi Autonomous Systems Investments Company (ADASI), a Tawazun subsidiary, today signed a teaming agreement for the two companies to address the growing Middle East market for unmanned systems.
Speaking at the International Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEX) in Abu Dhabi, company representatives said the teaming agreement enables ADASI to provide training, support and marketing services for Boeing's ScanEagle and Integrator unmanned aircraft systems in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with prospects to expand into the Middle East and North Africa.
"This agreement advances Boeing's strategy of partnering with best-in-industry companies such as ADASI," said Debbie Rub, a vice president and general manager in Boeing Military Aircraft. "We plan to continue investing and growing in the UAE and the broader Middle East region in order to support U.S. allies' enduring need for affordable intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) solutions, such as ScanEagle and Integrator."
The agreement supports the ongoing drive to develop UAE national capabilities within ADASI. Boeing's direct involvement with ADASI will open many opportunities for ADASI's UAE nationals to develop their knowledge and skills through Boeing's world-leading capabilities and experience in the management and implementation of technical programs.

First F-35C carrier variant Production Model Takes Flight
The first Lockheed Martin production model F-35C carrier variant, known as CF-6, flew its first sortie Thursday. Upon delivery later this year, the jet will be assigned to US Navy Fighter Attack Squadron 101 (VFA-101) at Eglin AFB, Florida. The unit will serve as the Fleet Replacement Squadron, training Navy F-35C pilots and maintainers. Northrop Grumman to Begin Next Phase of Modernizing B-2 Defensive Systems
PALMDALE, Calif., Feb. 14, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) will help drive down costs and speed the availability of new hardware and software upgrades for the B-2 stealth bomber under a recently awarded contract from the U.S. Air Force.
The contract covers Technology Development (TD) Phase 2 of a multiyear effort by Northrop Grumman to modernize the B-2's defensive management system (DMS). TD Phase 2 is expected to last approximately three years.
DMS is an electronic warfare system that includes various antennas and display processors. Northrop Grumman is the Air Force's prime contractor for the B-2, the flagship of the nation's long-range strike arsenal.
"TD Phase 2 is the cornerstone of a rapid acquisition initiative that Northrop Grumman and the government developed to reduce B-2 DMS modernization costs and accelerate the availability of the latest technologies for the aircraft," said Lauren Stevens, director of the company's B-2 DMS modernization integrated product team. "Instead of relying on new hardware and software development, our initiative takes advantage of mature, proven technologies. It minimizes nonrecurring costs, and reduces the time and technology risks associated with fielding new capabilities."
DMS modernization includes a new avionics graphics processor being developed by Lockheed Martin Mission Systems and Training, Owego, N.Y.; and new antennas, which are being developed by L3 Randtron, Menlo, Park, Calif., and Ball Aerospace, Boulder, Colo.
Northrop Grumman serves as the B-2 system integrator and developer of the architecture that determines how the aircraft responds to threat environments. In this role, the company will integrate all new DMS hardware and requisite software onto the jet.
"The DMS upgrades demonstrate how Northrop Grumman is using innovation and thoughtful engineering to address and fulfill key affordability goals of the Department of Defense," explained Ron Naylor, director of B-2 Modernization and Transformation for Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems. "They also help ensure that the B-2 will remain the nation's most survivable and most effective long-range strike system for dealing with sophisticated enemy threats."
TD Phase 2 of the DMS modernization program will include continued development and testing of the hardware and software for the new systems; evaluation, down-select and awarding of the contract for the new DMS antennas; and preparation by Northrop Grumman and its suppliers for the next phase of DMS modernization, known as engineering, manufacturing and development (EMD).
As part of its plan to reduce costs and fielding schedules, Northrop Grumman accelerated forward into TD Phase 2 many significant engineering tasks normally conducted during EMD. EMD is expected to begin in late 2014.
The B-2 is the only long-range, large-payload U.S. aircraft that can penetrate deeply into access-denied airspace. In concert with the Air Force's air superiority fleet, which provides airspace control, and the Air Force's tanker fleet, which enables global mobility, the B-2 can help protect U.S. interests anywhere in the world. Airbus is confident that the lithium ion (Li-ion) main battery architecture it has been developing with Saft and qualifying for the A350 XWB aircraft is robust and safe. The A350 XWB flight test programme will continue as planned with the qualified Li-ion main batteries.
However, to date, the root causes of the two recent industry Li-ion main batteries incidents remain unexplained to the best of our knowledge. In this context, and with a view to ensuring the highest level of programme certainty, Airbus has decided to activate its “Plan B” and therefore to revert back to the proven and mastered nickel cadmium main batteries for its A350 XWB programme at Entry into Service (EIS). Airbus considers this to be the most appropriate way forward in the interest of programme execution and A350 XWB reliability.
In parallel, Airbus has also launched additional maturity studies on Li-ion main batteries behavior in aerospace operations and will naturally take on board the findings of the ongoing official investigation.
As a result of making this decision now, Airbus does not expect it to impact the A350 XWB Entry Into Service schedule.

LEMV airship programme cancelled
Northrop Grumman airship programme cancelled: The Northrop Grumman Long Endurance Multi-Intelligence Vehicle (LEMV), a lighter-than-air vehicle meant to keep sophisticated sensors airborne for weeks at a time, has been canceled by the US Army.
"This project was initially designed to support operational needs in Afghanistan in Spring 2012; it will not provide a capability in the timeframe required," says the Army. "Due to technical and performance challenges, and the limitations imposed by constrained resources, the Army has determined to discontinue the LEMV development effort."

Currently more than 650 Eurocopter helicopters fly in the Arab world, with more than 80 percent of them for military use. Eurocopter is supporting the region's armed forces for missions including combat, transport, Search and Rescue (SAR), counter-terrorism, special missions and training. Eurocopter also remains active in providing the best support to its customers, thanks to a maintenance center in the United Arab Emirates with long-standing partner Falcon Aviation Services (FAS). Through an operating agreement that was renewed last month, this center provides full maintenance and revision services, reinforcing the company’s customer support network in the region and supplementing Eurocopter’s platform in Abu Dhabi. In addition, a Eurocopter technical office has been opened in Islamabad for the daily support of its long-standing customers in Pakistan.
“In a region where loyalty and confidence are important qualities, Eurocopter will build on its proven relationship of more than 30 years with governmental, military, parapublic and civilian operators throughout the region,” explained Olivier Lambert, Eurocopter’s Senior Vice President for Sales and Customer Relations. “With a strong footprint in the Middle East, we continue to see a demand for our helicopters for military use. Equipped with the latest technology, they are able to perform all their missions in the most severe operational environment and critical situations”. Built by NHIndustries, a consortium formed by Eurocopter, AgustaWestland and Fokker, the NH90 is just one of the models on show. To date, 136 NH90s have been delivered to customers, including 18 NH90s in the naval version. The fleet has now clocked up more than 30,000 flight hours, mainly in SAR missions performed in especially demanding environments and also in the Afghan theater of operations. Compatible with 80 types of NATO frigates, the naval version of the NH90 has fully demonstrated its capabilities in a wide range of missions, from reconnaissance, ship identification and tracking to rescue and transportation of passengers and troops.
The first customer of the NH90 in the Middle East is the Sultanate of Oman with an order of 20 helicopters. Today, 12 NH90s have been delivered to operate especially in utility missions.
Eurocopter’s display of the AS565 Panther in scale model form at IDEX underscores this helicopter’s attributes of speed and maneuverability for security and defense missions, with its operational credentials further enhanced by the twin-engine helicopter’s endurance, range and capabilities in overwater surveillance, tracking and search & rescue. The AS565 has been proven in Middle East operations for the protection of coastlines and surveillance of offshore economic zones with countries such as the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.
The EC145 T2 is Eurocopter’s evolved version of the popular twin-engine EC145, incorporating new Arriel 2E engines, along with the company’s Fenestron shrouded tail rotor, upgraded main and tail rotor gear boxes, new digital avionics suite and a 4-axis autopilot. It is tailored for the Middle East’s emerging needs in law enforcement, border surveillance, medical airlift and other missions.
The EC145 helicopter family scored a major success when it was selected by the U.S. Army for its Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) program, with the contract comprising nearly 350 aircraft in total. More than 250 of these helicopters, which are designated the UH-72A in their U.S. Army configuration, have now been received by the customer – with all delivered on time and on cost from the production line of Eurocopter’s American Eurocopter subsidiary in the state of Mississippi. Feedback on the operational use of this fleet has been incorporated into the new T2 version now available to armed forces.
Avianca takes delivery of Sharklet equipped A320
Avianca, the Colombia-based airline, has taken delivery of its first Sharklet equipped A320 becoming the first Latin American carrier to take benefit of the new fuel-saving wing-tip devices. The A320, powered by CFM engines, was delivered in Toulouse, France.
Sharklets are made from light-weight composites and are 2.4 meters tall. They are an option on new-build A320 Family aircraft and allow Airbus’ airline customers to reduce fuel burn by up to four per cent and CO2 emissions by approximately 1,000 tons per aircraft and year. Sharklets offer operators the flexibility of either adding an additional 100 nautical miles range or increased payload capability of up to 450 kilograms.
"With the delivery of this new aircraft equipped with Sharklets, Avianca advances the process of modernizing its fleet, while improving efficiency, reducing fuel burn and increasing range," said Fabio Villegas, CEO of Avianca.
“With the Sharklets, Avianca will be the first airline in the region to benefit from much lower operating costs,” said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers. “In addition, Avianca’s passengers can fly assured that they are travelling on board the world’s most eco-efficient single aisle aircraft.”
Avianca currently operates 98 A320 Family aircraft, and has 70 on order with the option to be Sharklet equipped. Sharklets are standard on all members of the A320neo Family. In 2012, Avianca placed an order for 33 eco-efficient A320neo aircraft along with 18 incremental A320ceos. With nearly an all-Airbus fleet, Avianca Taca has purchased 190 aircraft and has a backlog of 74 Airbus aircraft.
The A320 Family is the world’s best-selling and most modern single aisle aircraft Family. To date, over 9,100 aircraft have been ordered and over 5,400 delivered to more than 380 customers and operators worldwide. Airbus has sold more than 750 aircraft throughout Latin America and the Caribbean and currently holds a backlog that exceeds 370.
Eurocopter grows in Mexico with the inauguration of a production center for high-technology aircraft components

Located at the Aerotech Industrial Park adjacent to Querétaro Intercontinental Airport, this 12,000-square-meter facility will be the single-source production site for structures used in jetliner doors that the company manufactures for Airbus, along with tail booms to equip Eurocopter Ecureuil helicopters. The site also is home to a recently-opened 1,000-square-meter maintenance center specialized in the Ecureuil family of helicopters, which serves the region’s Eurocopter clients operating the popular lightweight rotorcraft.
“Today’s inauguration underscores Eurocopter’s strategy of being present in key geographical regions for its customers, and developing manufacturing capabilities where technological and industrial infrastructure supports value-added production,” said Eurocopter President & CEO Lutz Bertling during comments at the opening ceremony. “In addition, this marks the 30th anniversary of our Eurocopter de México subsidiary, which continues our nearly 50-year presence in the country.”
Also joining invited guests at the Querétaro facility inauguration event were Gerardo Ruiz Esparza, Mexico’s Minister of Transportation and Communications; Idelfonso Guajardo Villareal, Minister of Economy, Lic. Claudia Ruiz Massieu Salinas, Minister of Tourism, and José E. Calzada Rovirosa, Governor of the Mexican state of Querétaro.

Construction of the Querétaro manufacturing center began early 2012, followed by the hiring and training of personnel during the year. It will create approximately 200 specialized jobs, enabling the plant to generate 200,000 production hours annually during its initial phase of activity. Eurocopter’s market presence in Mexico began in 1964, when the first Alouette helicopters arrived to serve the Mexican Air Force and the country’s Presidential Air Transport Unit. Based on the company’s business growth and its policy of developing regional resources for marketing, maintenance, technical and support services, as well as training, the Eurocopter de México subsidiary was established in 1982.
Today, more than 450 Eurocopter helicopters are flying with operators in Eurocopter de México’s area of responsibility, covering Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and the northern sector of South America. This inventory includes the AS350 B3, utilized in public services, private transportation and aerial utility work; the EC145, deployed for oil and gas airlift; the Dauphin family for private transportation, along with oil and gas missions; and the EC725/EC225, deployed in air force, navy and governmental duties.
In addition, all Mexican presidents since the 1960s have flown in Eurocopter-built helicopters, which are operated by the country’s Presidential Air Transport Unit.
Airbus supports new noise standard
Industry to further reduce aircraft noise by seven decibels
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP) has adopted a new noise stringency level for commercial airplanes. The milestone achieved at the CAEP meeting last week lowers the current standard by seven decibels. Having now been agreed by the ICAO CAEP, the new stringent noise standard will be presented for final review and approval by the ICAO Council later in 2013. This new standard will come into force on the 31st December 2017.
“Over the past 40 years, Airbus has put a lot of effort into reducing noise at source and to bringing the quietest aircraft to the market. This new standard is another major step in how the global commercial aviation industry is pro-actively addressing environmental protection,” said Fabrice Brégier, Airbus President and CEO.
At Airbus, innovation and technology are key to provide aircraft that generate fewer emissions and less noise while carrying a maximum payload over the mission range. All Airbus development aircraft (NEO and A350 XWB) are designed to be compliant with the new noise standard.
In addition, Airbus continues developing new solutions to further reduce the operational noise. Several functionalities are available such as the Automatic Noise Abatement Departure Procedure (NADP) that optimises the thrust and flight path to reduce noise over populated areas.
In the UK, which has the strictest noise regulations in the world, the A380 was given an award for its quiet operations by the UK Noise Abatement Society in 2012.
The A380 carries 42 percent more passengers than its nearest competitor but produces half the noise energy when taking off, and three to four times less noise energy when landing. The A350 XWB, the aircraft with the leading environmental performance in the long-range market is up to 16 decibels below the current standard requirement.

Boeing, Icelandair Finalize Order for 16 737 MAX Airplanes

REYKJAVIK, Iceland, Feb. 13, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Icelandair announced a firm order today for 16 737 MAX airplanes, valued at more than $1.6 billion at list prices. The order, originally announced as a commitment for 12 airplanes in December 2012, has been increased to 16 airplanes and includes 737 MAX 8s and 9s, as well as purchase rights for eight additional 737 MAXs. Today's announcement brings the total number of 737 MAXs ordered to date to 1,180.
"The 737 MAX will complement our Boeing 757 operations seamlessly and allow us to continue our route expansion in the most fuel-efficient manner," said Bjorgolfur Johannsson, Icelandair Group president and CEO.
The 737 MAX builds on the strengths of the world's best-selling Next-Generation 737. The 737 MAX incorporates the latest-technology CFM International LEAP-1B engines to deliver the highest efficiency, reliability and passenger comfort in the single-aisle market. Airlines operating the 737 MAX will see a 13 percent fuel-use improvement over today's most fuel-efficient single-aisle airplanes.
