El gobierno checo acaba de aprobar la venta de 28 entrenadores avanzados L-159. El cliente no es un país sino una compañía privada, Draken International. Hace unas semanas ya apareció en las noticias porque había adquirido varios MiG-21 polacos para misiones de entrenamiento. Draken International va a pagar 21.7-25.8 millones de $ por os aparatos. Cuatro de ellos servirán de repuesto. También deberá pagar las posibles reparaciones y puestas a punto.

Taller-Seminario. Técnicas para combatir la aerofobia.
Este taller-seminario forma parte de un elaborado proyecto, desde el que pretendemos ayudar, de un modo ameno y participativo, a superar los temores que tienen lugar a hora de tomar un vuelo.
Durante aproximadamente 3 horas, asistirás a una conferencia impartida por una técnico de vuelo que explicará los sistemas de seguridad, ruidos e incidencias técnicas habituales que pueden acontecer en vuelo, así como su sencilla resolución. Del mismo modo se indicará a los asistentes todos los servicios a los que tienen derecho en vuelo y se permitirá un espacio para dudas y consultas.
Tras su ponencia, una psicóloga-coach mostrará unas interesantes técnicas de relajación útiles para aplicar en la aeronave en caso de crisis de ansiedad, así como algunos otros métodos de control del miedo.

Cuatro estudiantes de Ingeniería Aeronáutica de la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid ganaron la semana pasada la competición de ingeniería EBEC (European BEST Engineering Competition) Madrid, en la categoría Team Design, lo que les permite acceder a la final nacional (EBEC Spain). Para ello derribaron una estructura de manera controlada, colocando globos deshinchados en fisuras críticas, e inflándolos para que las grietas crecieran y cayera la estructura.
Cuatro estudiantes de tercer curso de la Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Aeronáutica de la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid ganaron la semana pasada la competición de ingeniería EBEC (European BEST Engineering Competition) Madrid, en la categoría Team Design, lo que les permite acceder a la final nacional (EBEC Spain).
El reto planteado a los estudiantes consistía en desarrollar un prototipo original que fuese capaz de derribar una estructura preparada por la organización de BEST Madrid, de forma controlada y desde una distancia de 0,5 metros. El sistema a diseñar debía ser lo suficientemente versátil como para poder usarse en una gran cantidad de escenarios de actuación. Asimismo, la estructura contaba con objetos señalados en color rojo, que representaban aquellas partes del edificio que no podían ser retiradas con seguridad sin comprometer la estabilidad de la edificación.
Jon García Aguado, Cristina Gayo Medina, Celia Iglesias Cano y Diego Peña Castillo, señala la nota de prensa de la UPM, decidieron solventar el reto con una máquina que minimizase la energía necesaria para el proceso. "Para ello, colocamos sondas en fisuras críticas de la estructura. Estas sondas se componían básicamente de un globo desinflado que íbamos hinchando para aumentar la presión en la grieta y así hacer avanzar la fisura y derribar la estructura", explican.
Además, se valoraba que la herramienta diseñada no arrojase los escombros lejos de la zona de demolición por lo que "posicionamos una protección alrededor del edificio que evitaba que los escombros saliesen de un perímetro de seguridad".
Los materiales empleados para materializarlo eran tan sencillos como globos, tubos de plástico, maderas y motores eléctricos.
La siguiente cita les llevará a Barcelona, para disputar EBEC Spain, la fase nacional en la que se enfrentarán a los ganadores de las otras fases locales. Y el último destino es la final europea, que esta edición se celebrará en Riga (Letonia) en agosto de 2014.
Varios de los miembros del equipo ganador de Madrid ya estuvieron el año pasado en la final europea, en Varsovia (Polonia).

La empresa de construcción naval holandesa Damen Shipyards lanza por segundo año consecutivo un concurso para estudiantes de Master, último año de carrera o recién egresados de Ingeniería Naval e Ingeniería Industrial. Se trata de presentar un proyecto de idea innovadora. Los ganadores optarán a ser contratados por la empresa. Holanda solo cubre con sus licenciados el 50% de las ofertas de empleo del sector naval.
La empresa de construcción naval holandesa Damen Shipyards lanza por segundo año consecutivo el concurso White paper competition (Competición papel en blanco), que ofrece a los estudiantes de Master, último año de carrera o recién egresados de Ingeniería Naval e Ingeniería Industrial, la posibilidad de presentar un proyecto de idea innovadora y optar a uno de los premios con que gratificarán a los ganadores nacionales: asistir a una Master Class en Damen y tener la posibilidad de ser contratado por la empresa. Cuatro de los veinte partipantes en la Master Class del año pasado fueron posteriormente contratados por la multinacional naviera.
Los interesados tienen hasta el 31 de diciembre de este año para inscribirse y mandar una breve descripción (máximo 100 palabras) de su idea y podrán completar hasta final de febrero su proyecto.
Holanda solo cubre con sus ingenieros navales el 50% de las ofertas de empleo de sus navieras y, en concreto, en el astillero de Gorinchem de Damen trabajan un millar de empleados de 20 nacionalidades. Y entre ellos, varios exalumnos de la Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena, según informa ésta en una nota de prensa.

Today is the 50th birthday of the first delivery of the legendary Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6 turboprop. That first engine was delivered to Beech Aircraft Company for installation into an aircraft that would become the equally remarkable Beechcraft King Air.
The PT6 had its genesis at what was then the United Aircraft of Canada Limited factory in Longueuil, Quebec. In the mid-1950s, UACL had looked at the market and determined that there was a need for a small, efficient turboprop in the 500 shaft horsepower (SHP) range. They felt there was technology available to replace current radial piston engines that dated back to the 1920s, like the P & W Wasp.
So in 1957, a group of 12 young engineers got together to design a powerplant that was unlike any engine of its time. Turboprops of the day were massive, such as the 4,000 SHP Allison T56 that powered the Lockheed C-130 Hercules, or they were early-generation and inefficient, like the Rolls-Royce Dart that flew on the Vickers Viscount.
The engineering team made design choices that would stand the test of time. They separated the gas generator and the power sections of the turbine. Think of your car – the gas generator in the PT6 is like your engine, and the power section is the transmission. Other turboprops had the gas generator directly connected to the power section. If that was in your car, it would be like trying to start and drive it with the transmission always engaged. By splitting the engine, starting was much easier and maintenance was hugely simplified. The design is also called a "free turbine".

The team also decided to make the PT6 a "reverse flow" engine. If you look at a PT6A, say, on a deHavilland Canada DHC-3T Turbine Otter, you'll see that the engine's air inlet is under and behind the propeller. The air travels below and to the rear of the engine before it makes a 90-degree upwards turn, enters the generator, and changes direction a few times as it gets compressed and ignited. The exhaust is in the forward part of the engine, not in the back. If you look carefully at this video, you'll see how the air flows through the engine. The two main sections are separate, with the forward, power section driving the prop, and the rear, gas generator driving the accessories at the rear of the engine.
Since the first PT6 was delivered 50 years ago, Pratt & Whitney Canada has impressively improved the engine, taking advantage of the many advances in material technologies, manufacturing processes, aerodynamics, and electronics. Today's PT6 is up to four times more powerful than the first turboprop, with up to 20% lower fuel consumption.

The PT6′s statistics are impressive. Over 51,000 engines have been produced, powering more than 130 different applications. There are more than 69 different models, from 500 SHP to over 2,000 SHP. You'll find PT6s in planes and helicopters, and the engines have also powered boats, cars and trains. In 1967, a PT6-powered racecar even led the Indy 500 until 8 miles from the end, when a $6 transmission bearing failed.

Over 7,200 operators worldwide are flying aircraft powered by the PT6, and have logged over 385 million flying hours. P&WC says that if you were flying a PT6-powered plane at a speed of 310 mph, that would be like going to the moon and back 250,000 times. If any engine could do that, it would be the PT6.

Taller-Seminario. Técnicas para combatir la aerofobia.
Este taller-seminario forma parte de un elaborado proyecto, desde el que pretendemos ayudar, de un modo ameno y participativo, a superar los temores que tienen lugar a hora de tomar un vuelo.
Durante aproximadamente 3 horas, asistirás a una conferencia impartida por una técnico de vuelo que explicará los sistemas de seguridad, ruidos e incidencias técnicas habituales que pueden acontecer en vuelo, así como su sencilla resolución. Del mismo modo se indicará a los asistentes todos los servicios a los que tienen derecho en vuelo y se permitirá un espacio para dudas y consultas.
Tras su ponencia, una psicóloga-coach mostrará unas interesantes técnicas de relajación útiles para aplicar en la aeronave en caso de crisis de ansiedad, así como algunos otros métodos de control del miedo.
