Innovative 3D printing solutions are “taking shape” within Airbus
Airbus is making significant investments in revolutionary additive layer manufacturing technologies (3D printing) – with expanding capabilities that are demonstrating the company’s pioneering spirit to create new and better ways to fly.
At the centre of Airbus’ innovative efforts is the company’s new additive layer manufacturing initiative – which creates a grouping of experts and competencies from the aircraft manufacturer’s engineering, manufacturing engineering and procurement operations. With this knowledge base, Airbus is well-positioned to define a vision, strategy and roadmap for applying 3D printing technologies.
This approach will accelerate the company’s technical and industrial competencies and bring together research and technology activities directly with programmes, said Jerome Rascol, who heads this additive layer manufacturing initiative. “I can see Airbus manufacturing a ‘bionic’ aircraft based on 3D printing in the future, so we’re taking a pragmatic, step-by-step approach,” he said.
A futuristic technology taking flight with Airbus
Additive manufacturing is a relatively quick process for creating three-dimensional parts from a digital model by adding successive thin layers of a base material. The technology results in lighter parts, with shorter lead times, fewer materials used during production and a significant reduction in the manufacturing process’ environmental footprint.
3D-printed parts already are applied in Airbus’ commercial jetliner product line – from the widebody A350 XWB to its single-aisle A320neo and the cornerstone A300/A310 Family. For example, some 2,700 plastic parts have been produced by additive manufacturing for the A350 XWB programme, with Airbus also working with the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) to qualify titanium components produced with 3D printing technology.
This innovative technology also has been utilized to produce pylon components for the A320neo (new engine option) developmental aircraft in support of the flight test campaign, and for out-of-production spare parts on the A300/A310 Family of jetliners.
“Printing tomorrow’s technology”
With its additive layer manufacturing initiative, the company is focused on taking its capabilities even further, Rascol explained. “There are surely applications and paradigm changes we have not thought of yet. We are thinking every day about ways to 3D print tomorrow’s technology for airframes, cabins and systems.”
This forward-looking strategy focuses on developing methods, tools and training for 3D printing; supporting the wider application of additive manufacturing technologies in Airbus’ supply chain; as well as cooperating with airworthiness authorities to quality materials and processes for certification.

Start your engines…First full GE9X engine begins testing
April 11, 2016
PEEBLES, OH--Ground testing in underway on the first full GE9X development engine, which is the world’s largest commercial aircraft engine, at GE Aviation’s Peebles Testing Operation in Ohio. The GE9X engine will power Boeing’s new 777X aircraft.
“The entire GE9X team—from engineering to sourcing to supply chain to development assembly—devoted countless hours to enable this achievement to occur,” said Bill Millhaem, general manager of the GE90/GE9X engine programs at GE Aviation. “The ground testing will generate data on the full engine system and aerodynamic performance, mechanical verification, and aero thermal system validation.”
"We would like to convey our congratulations to the GE team for its achievement of this milestone,” said Bob Feldmann, Boeing 777X vice president and general manager. “GE's commitment to technology maturation throughout the GE9X development program continues to deliver results for the 777X program. We look forward to working together with GE to deliver this great airplane to our customers.”
Maturation testing of the GE9X engine began about five years ago and has progressed from component-level all the way to the first full engine to test (FETT). FETT brings all the GE9X technologies together to demonstrate their operability as a complete propulsion system.
Compared to other engine programs, the GE9X FETT happened earlier in the development process, just a mere six months after the engine design was finalized. This timing assures all learnings from FETT will be captured in the certification engines. Next year will be a busy year for the GE9X program with the start of certification testing and flight testing on GE Aviation’s flying test bed. Engine certification is anticipated in 2018.
With almost 700 GE9X engines on order, the GE9X engine will be in the 100,000 pound thrust class and will have the largest front fan at 134 inches in diameter with a composite fan case and 16 fourth generation carbon fiber composite fan blades. Other key features include; a next-generation 27:1 pressure-ratio 11-stage high-pressure compressor; a third-generation TAPS III combustor for high efficiency and low emissions; and CMC material in the combustor and turbine.
IHI Corporation, Snecma and Techspace Aero (Safran), and MTU Aero Engines AG are participants in the GE9X engine program.

Boeing files patent for artificial 3D printed ice blocks used for next-gen flight testing
http://www.3ders.org/articles/20160418-boeing-files-patent-for-artificial-3d-printed-ice-blocks-used-for-next-gen-flight-testing.html
If you’ve ever been out for a walk on a winter morning, you’ll have seen the grass covered by gorgeous ice crystals. These are formed when supercooled water droplets touch a solid surface. A delight to see when you have both feet on the ground, but a real hazard for airplanes everywhere. As a plane’s aerodynamic shape is crucial for a safe flight, a significant build-up of these ice crystals on the wings or the tail of a plane can seriously increase the chance of a disastrous crash.
That’s why the international authorities that provide aircraft certification stipulate that all new aircraft designs need to be tested in ‘known icing conditions’, through a ‘Flight Into Known Icing’ or FIKI. “Such certification test flights may require that the aircraft be flown with artificial ice shapes attached to wing and/or tail leading edges,” Boeing writes in its latest patent application. “Dry air flight tests with artificial ice shapes installed allows airplane performance and handling characteristics to be evaluated in stable dry air conditions and with the critical ice shape remaining constant.” read full story: http://www.3ders.org/articles/20160418-boeing-files-patent-for-artificial-3d-printed-ice-blocks-used-for-next-gen-flight-testing.html
World's smallest engine powered by a single atom [feedly]
A team of German physicists has just created the world's smallest working engine. Powered by a single electrically-charged calcium atom, the new device is claimed to have the equivalent thermodynamic efficiency (if scaled to size) of an average automobile engine. Basically a heat-exchange engine, its single-atom acts as both fuel and powerplant and is heated by electrical noise and cooled by laser beam.

It may look like a backwards airplane with a collection of fans for wings, but a miniature test version of DARPA's Vertical Take-off and Landing Experimental Plane (VTOL X-Plane) took to the skies recently. According to the builder, Aurora Flight Sciences, the subscale vehicle demonstrator (SVD) prototype of the LightningStrike successfully completed a series of takeoff, hover, and landing maneuvers at an undisclosed US military base.
