COMAC and Bombardier Sign Definitive Agreement to Establish Commonality Opportunities Between C919 and CSeries Aircraft
SHANGHAI, CHINA, Mar 21, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- Further to the framework agreement signed on March 24, 2011, Jin Zhuanglong, Chairman, Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China Ltd (COMAC) and Pierre Beaudoin, President and Chief Executive Officer, Bombardier Inc. signed today a definitive agreement covering program commonalities between the C919 and CSeries aircraft. More specifically, the two leading aircraft manufacturers have agreed to cooperate on four distinctive projects to be executed as part of the first phase of COMAC and Bombardier's long-term collaboration on the C919 aircraft and the CSeries families of commercial airliners.
The four initiatives on which COMAC and Bombardier will be collaborating as part of this initial phase are commonality on: 1) the cockpit human-machine (crew) interfaces, 2) the electrical system, 3) the development of aluminum-lithium standards and specifications, and 4) areas of customer services in terms of technical publications and co-location of teams. All four projects are expected to be completed over the next 12 months and in conjunction with the C919 aircraft development schedule.
This first collaborative phase further reinforces the strategic long-term relationship between COMAC and Bombardier and demonstrates the complementary nature of the C919 and CSeries aircraft programs. Both parties will continue exploring other possibilities for cooperation with regards to aircraft program commonalities, joint procurement, synergies in development and customer services, as well as collaboration on Bombardier and COMAC programs.
"I am delighted that, leveraging on our corporations' mutual strengths, synergies are being developed into mutually beneficial, tangible initiatives. This will certainly contribute to enhancing the competitiveness of not only the C919 and CSeries aircraft programs, but also of COMAC and Bombardier's overall businesses," said Mr. Jin, Chairman, COMAC.
"I am pleased to see the framework agreement signed in March last year reaching this important milestone," said Mr. Beaudoin, President and Chief Executive Officer, Bombardier Inc. "We are confident these four initial projects will build on the complementary nature of our respective products and expertise while helping to maximize both parties' cost savings and market shares."
By signing this definitive agreement, Bombardier and COMAC are embarking on a first step to create opportunities for customers of the CSeries and C919 aircraft to realize cost benefits from the operation of both aircraft families.

Boeing Receives Certification for 787 Dreamliner With GE Engines
EVERETT, Wash., March 20, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) received certification today from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for the 787-8 Dreamliner equipped with General Electric GEnx engines.
"This is a great day for our customers and for our team who worked tirelessly to ensure the Dreamliner offers breakthrough fuel efficiency, unprecedented performance and new levels of comfort," said Larry Loftis, vice president and general manager of the 787 program. "We are pleased to accept the FAA's confirmation of the safety and reliability of this airplane."
Certification from the FAA formally recognizes that the 787 with GE engines has demonstrated compliance with rigorous federal regulations. The achievement caps off the most robust flight and ground test program ever conducted in the company's history.
"This milestone completes the certification of the 787-8 airplane, and allows airlines to now operate the GE engine-powered 787 with both the baseline Block 4 engine and the PIP1 engine upgrade," said Mike Sinnett, vice president and chief project engineer for the 787 program. "It also represents the success of a remarkable partnership with the regulatory agencies around the world."
"This is the culmination of extraordinary work by teams from GE and Boeing," said Chuck Nugent, general manager of the GEnx engine program for General Electric. "GE Aviation is honored to power the Boeing 787 Dreamliner with its new GEnx-1B engine, and we look forward to seeing the aircraft-engine combination flying the skies around the world."
Initial type certification of the 787 with Rolls-Royce engines took place in August 2011. Each new combination of an airframe type and engine requires additional certification to validate the integrity of the design.
60 customers around the world have ordered more than 870 Dreamliners.

Airbus and Virgin Australia study new alternative fuel process
Commercialisation of alternative aviation fuels takes a step forward
21 MARCH 2012 PRESS RELEASE
Airbus has joined a consortium including Virgin Australia to study a new pathway to produce sustainable aviation fuels. Eucalyptus mallee trees, grown in Western Australia’s wheat belt are sustainably harvested and converted to a feedstock for refining into alternative aviation fuel via a process called Pyrolysis.
Mallee is indigenous to Australia and is well adapted to the environment. It is a suitable sustainable crop because it helps return salt-affected land to a productive state. Mallee can be planted on farms alongside crops, and provide a range of environmental benefits and contribute to the long term sustainability of the overall farming operation. Growing these trees to make alternative fuels encourages large scale planting, which is expected to bring a range of environmental and social benefits to farmers and rural communities.
The Pyrolysis thermal conversion process has yet to be recognised by the world’s fuels standards authorities. Airbus’ role includes supporting the approval and certification process so that Pyrolysis based fuels can be used for the first time in commercial aviation.
The consortium also includes Future Farm Industries CRC, which is developing sustainable farming systems as part of the Australian Government’s Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) program.
The project objective is to have a pilot alternative fuel production plant operating in Australia in the next year. The sustainability analysis is managed by the CRC, Airbus and the UK’s Manchester Metropolitan University.
“Alternative fuels are a crucial part of the roadmap for sustainable aviation and to help meet our ambitious CO2 reduction targets. We are privileged to be working with our Australian partners in this exciting value chain project,” said Tom Enders, Airbus President and CEO.
Virgin Australia Group Executive of Operations Sean Donohue said: “In order to produce a biofuel that can be used sustainably in our current aircraft, it is important to have members from every part of the supply chain involved. Airbus will bring vast expertise in aircraft manufacturing to the consortium and we are very pleased to have a company of its calibre joining this promising Australian project”.
The partnership agreement aims to develop a complete sustainable aviation bio-fuel production capability in Australia, using only sustainable resources and is part of the Airbus goal to have in place a value chain in every continent by 2012. So far Airbus has value chains in Latin America, Europe the Middle East, and now Australia.

- Left: Mr Michel Farssac, Executive Vice President of Human Resources for the Eurocopter Group
- Right: Mr Michael Hoffmann-Herve, Randstad Executive Director
Marignane, March 15, 2012
Eurocopter has again come out on top in the Randstad Award survey, after being voted France's most attractive employer across all sectors for the second year running. A leader in its domain for more than 10 years, Eurocopter was also at the top of the list for the third time in the capital goods industrial sector.
Speaking at the awards ceremony in Paris today, Executive Vice President of Human Resources for the Eurocopter Group Michel Farssac said: "This latest distinction underscores all the effort that Eurocopter and its entire workforce have put in, and we are very proud to accept it. We have been able to establish such an excellent public image thanks to our attractive product portfolio, our ambitious innovation policy, our truly international footprint and our strong local roots. Having a clear vision of our strategy, guided by our commitment to finding new ways to better fit the needs of our customers, offers concrete development perspectives for all of our employees."
Gauging the views of 12,000 respondents on more than 200 companies based in France and operating in all sectors, the survey conducted by Randstad - the second largest human resources management firm worldwide - sets out to measure the attractiveness of the country's leading employers.
Respondents to the survey rated Eurocopter as the helicopter manufacturer with the best image and the company they would most like to work for out of all the firms they were familiar with. Their choice was based on ten key factors, including financial stability, interesting job possibilities, career and training prospects and workplace culture.
Eurocopter confirms its market leadership and strong commitment to Latin American customers at FIDAE
Marignane, France, March 20, 2012
Eurocopter's participation at the FIDAE International Air and Space Show in Santiago de Chile will underscore its strong presence in Latin America with a competitive range of products perfectly adapted to the growing needs of customers in the region.
Eurocopter is the leader in Latin America with more than 1,200 helicopters in operation, accounting for over 50 percent of the civil and parapublic market. This leadership position highlights the reliability and competitiveness of the Eurocopter's product range, capable of adapting to the wide array of missions and operating conditions in the region. Eurocopter offers Latin American customers the most extensive range of helicopters to perform a large variety of missions in the region, from offshore and VIP transportation to homeland security and law enforcement.
"We are grateful for the confidence placed in us by civil and military operators in Latin America over the last 30 years," said Mesrob Karalekian, vice president of Sales and Customer Relations for Latin America. "Eurocopter will continue to invest in the region and expand its range of products and services to keep pace with the growth of its customers."
Among the helicopters spotlighted on Eurocopter's exhibit is the EC725, the leading twin-engine 11-ton class helicopter, currently operated by the Brazilian Air Force. The aircraft on show is one of three that have already been delivered to the Brazilian Armed Forces as part of a contract for 50 EC725s to be used for transportation and civil security missions. Eurocopter's Brazilian subsidiary, Helibras, will soon be inaugurating its new final assembly line for this helicopter in Itajubá. This latest military version of the Super Puma/Cougar family offers next-generation avionics with a 4-axis autopilot and electronic controls that are also available on the Cougar AS532 AL+.
Business aviation, a key segment in Latin America with more than 1,000 Eurocopter helicopters devoted to executive transportation, will be represented by the EC135 light helicopter - also a favorite with parapublic operators - and the AS365 N3 from the famous Dauphin family. Having proved its ability to perform in the most severe climatic conditions, this medium size helicopter is also favored by coast guard and sea rescue services.
The Ecureuil family is also a particularly popular choice in Latin America, with more than 700 of these aircraft currently in service in the region for almost 400 operators. In support of these operators, Eurocopter will hold a special Ecureuil event during FIDAE for some 100 participants on March 29. "Our priority is to support our customers so that they can get the most out of their helicopters and guarantee the highest standards of fleet safety," said Alexandre Ceccacci, CEO of Eurocopter Cono Sur. "We are also proud to offer them the newest member of the Ecureuil family, the EC130 T2, which was successfully unveiled at this year's Heli-Expo air show."
Two aircraft from the Ecureuil family will be performing exhibition flights during the show.
The first is the AS350 B3, capable of performing a wide range of public safety and SAR missions thanks to its durability, speed and excellent visibility. Its unobstructed flat-floor cabin concept and low vibration level allow for the installation of infrared cameras, tactical consoles and other various next-generation equipment.
The single-engine EC130 B4, well appreciated for its reduced maintenance costs and high level of availability, will also take to the skies.
Also spotlighted at FIDAE will be a 1/5 scale model of Eurocopter's X3 plane-hybrid demonstrator, which combines the excellent vertical takeoff and landing capabilities of a helicopter with the fast cruise speeds of an airplane. The X³ has flown at speeds of more than 220 kts. confirming how this concept will provide extremely productive solutions to a wide range of missions – including long-distance search and rescue, passenger transportation and offshore operations.
Eurocopter has been present in the Southern Cone region for a decade now and has recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of its local subsidiary, which offers helicopter sales and customizations, fleet maintenance of 270 helicopters and pilot and technician training. The Eurocopter Group also has subsidiaries in Brazil (Helibras) and Mexico (EMSA) and counts more than 900 employees in Latin America.
Eurocopter will be present at the EADS stand (# D4-D8) and in the static display area.
A350 XWB a prominent feature of Premium AEROTEC exhibit at JEC in Paris
Augsburg, 20 March 2012
At the end of March, Paris will once again be the scene of futuristic technology and lightweight construction. At JEC, the world’s largest composites show, scheduled for 27 to 29 March, the focus will be on new and innovative materials, their industrial processing and their application in modern high-tech products. Premium AEROTEC, Europe’s largest aerostructures supplier, is using the annual trade fair to showcase its abilities in the area of manufacturing technologies and carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) aerostructures.
At the JEC trade fair, Premium AEROTEC is displaying a true-to-life CFRP component of the A350 XWB, the latest long-haul airliner in the Airbus family. With this exhibit, which measures roughly 4 x 2.3 metres, the company is highlighting its capabilities in the development and manufacture of complex aerostructures from sustainable materials. Premium AEROTEC is the largest supplier of structures for the A350 XWB. Besides the development, manufacture and assembly of the entire forward fuselage section (section 13/14) and the CFRP side shells, the CFRP pressure bulkhead and the floor structure of the rear fuselage section (16/18), Premium AEROTEC produces the attachments for the main landing gear and other structural components of the fuselage and wings.
CFRP materials are increasingly becoming the material of choice for aerostructures due to their low weight and excellent corrosion properties. They can be used to create structures that are considerably lighter than those made of conventional metal materials. In this context, Premium AEROTEC possesses significant capabilities with its know-how on the development of manufacturing systems through to their realisation on the customer’s premises. Building on its long experience and using state-of-the-art analysis and simulation tools, the company develops new manufacturing concepts that are perfectly tailored to the customer’s needs. As an example of these abilities, the company is presenting a model of a device for winding up carbon fibres. This method could be used to produce entire fuselage sections for aircraft, for example. The model underlines the company’s innovative approach towards developing new process-oriented manufacturing systems on the basis of existing requirements and customer needs. Also featured in the Premium AEROTEC exhibit at the JEC trade fair is the Tyfudem model, a miniature replica of a curing tool in which CFRP laminates are semi-automatically deposited, cured and finally shaped with high precision into a finished component.
The JEC composites fair will be held in Paris (Porte de Versailles exhibition grounds) from 27 to 29 March. Premium AEROTEC can be found there at stand number Y56. In addition, Premium AEROTEC will present the demonstrator of a CFRP fuselage section produced using VAP® technology (VAP = vacuum assisted process).
This demonstrator was developed as part of the Next Generation of Integrated Composite Aerostructures (NEXICOS) innovation project, which is supported by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. The objective of NEXICOS is to demonstrate the ability to manufacture entire fuselage sections with integrated stringers and window frames. This is done by bonding the multiaxial CFRP laminates using an infiltration process, assisted by the VAP® method, to form a complete fuselage barrel.
Premium AEROTEC generated revenues of 1.3 billion euros in 2011. Its core business is the development and manufacturing of metal and carbon composite aerostructures and the associated equipment and production systems. The company has production plants in Augsburg, Bremen, Nordenham and Varel in Germany, and in Braşov (Romania)
