Surveillance Plane Impacted A Mountain Near The Dominican Border
Eleven UN military personnel were lost Friday when their surveillance
aircraft impacted a mountain near the Dominican Border. It was not
known why they were conducting surveillance in that area.

Este año 2009, del 1 al 5 de octubre se celebró el II International Air Meeting (II IAM) en el mismo lugar. Recibí la invitación de mis amigos de AVA (www.aviadoresvirtuales.org) para asistir al evento, tanto como profesional como por aficionado a la simulación. Durante el II International Air Meeting se celebraba también el IV Campeonato de Vuelo Virtual de Cataluña, con dos novedades importantes respecto a ediciones anteriores: meses atrás la simulación aérea había sido reconocida como deporte aéreo por parte de la Federación Aérea Catalana y por otro lado sería la 1ª vez que la "Red Bull Air Race Virtual" llevase ese nombre de forma oficial, por contar con el apoyo de la organización de Red Bull así como de su patrocinio.
Acudí al evento con un pase VIP proporcionado amablemente por AVA. Lamentablemente no pude llegar a tiempo de las ponencias del día uno de octubre. Asistí tan solo al último día de la feria profesional y al primero de la feria abierta a los aficionados.

El tren de alta velocidad se está convirtiendo en un serio competidor
de la aviación regional para trayectos inferiores a 600 Km. La
ausencia de controles de seguridad tan rigurosos que permiten un
acceso rápido al propio tren, la flexibilidad en los horarios y la
enorme comodidad una vez dentro, con acceso a Internet, cafetería etc.
son atractivos cada vez más fuertes para el gran público. El resultado
es que rutas aéreas tan importantes y establecidas como el Puente
Aéreo Madrid-Barcelona están recibiendo un serio varapalo y han
perdido el 46% de los viajeros en poco más de 1 año de operación den
tren de alta velocidad. Para el 2011, Renfe estima que conseguirá el
56% hasta alcanzar 7.4 millones de pasajeros. En el presente artículo
analizamos al "enemigo".
Selex Galileo efectuó recientemente un vuelo de prueba en Gran Bretaña
del vehículo aéreo no tripulado Falco, el cual cuenta con un mini
radar de apertura sintetica denomicado PicoSAR. La combinación de

In principle, it is not a brand-new concept. But, one can say that
Israel Aerospace Industries' (IAI) Harop is somewhat blurring the
distinction between unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs) and
advanced missile systems. Israel – globally known as the origin of an
extensive range of innovative solutions in the field of unmanned
aviation –brought forward this peculiar and elaborate looking aerial
vehicle almost a decade ago, thereby insinuating that this article is
not breaking news. However, it is worth depicting this concept, which
is generally called "advanced loitering munition" – a designation that
does seem to do justice to this craft, which rather resembles a more
sophisticated reconnaissance UAV.

At EAA Airventure 2008, a group of award-winning MIT Aeronautical
Engineers set the aviation industry ablaze with the introduction of
their proof of concept "flying car." The two-seat aircraft, designed
to transform from a plane to a car in less than 30 seconds, allows a
pilot to easily fold and stow wings for road use with quick
wing-deployment for flight all from the comfort of the cockpit. Able
to cruise up to 450 miles at over 115mph in air, as well as drive at
highway speeds on any road surface, the Terrafugia Transition, as
stated by the company, aims to provide increased flexibility by
exploring innovative new frontiers for personal mobility.
10/5/2009 - SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (AFNS) -- Air Mobility Command
is not only training its pilots, it's doing it better. The command is
linking its aircraft training simulators through numerous bases to
make a good flight crew an even better flight crew.
This simulator linking initiative is part of an Air Force Smart
Operations for the 21st Century initiative by AMC. The effort is
showing a multitude of possibilities for improving efficiency and
saving time and money.

the KC-135E Stratotankers to retire made its final flight Sept. 28 to
Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, and after more than 50 years of
service, tail number 56-1503 will be relegated to a life as one of
several planes used for aircraft maintenance training on the base.

Study of halophytes to measure potential for sustainable production
HONG KONG, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) today
announced it is joining with Honeywell's UOP to commission a study on
the sustainability of a leading family of saltwater-based plant
candidates for renewable jet fuel. The study is being commissioned as
part of the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Users Group (www.safug.org)
consortium. The Masdar Institute of Science and Technology in Abu
Dhabi will lead the study, which will examine the overall potential
for sustainable, large-scale production of biofuels made from
salicornia bigelovii and saltwater mangroves - plants known as
halophytes. Yale University's School of Forestry & Environmental
Studies and UOP will also participate in the analysis, which will
include an assessment of the total carbon lifecycle of biofuels.

Boeing could propose developing a "purpose-built" airframe as one of
several options to replace the US Air Force's fleet of Northrop T-38
jet trainers, say industry officials.
This is the culmination of a two-year programme, which included
extensive integration and mission testing with both BAE Systems and
the end users. The Thales ASTA devices have been progressively
installed and commissioned at RAF Kinloss in Scotland since 2004. The
devices are to be utilised by the RAF to prepare the mission syllabus
for the start of training around the activities of the upgrade.
Today's milestone supports the Nimrod MRA4 programme in-service date
of 2010.

Paves the way for 100 per cent synthetic jet fuel approval
Airbus welcomes the latest steps towards the approval by ASTM
International, one of the largest voluntary standards developing
organizations in the world, for the use of a 50 per cent synthetic jet
fuel in commercial aviation. Synthetic liquid jet fuels can be made
from biomass, natural gas or coal. All of these are known as xTL
fuels.

que lleva tres años de retraso respecto al cronograma inicial.
PZL Mielec, a Polish subsidiary of Sikorsky Aircraft, has entered the
final stages of the production of its first S-70i Black Hawk
helicopter. The news was announced last week during the International
Defence Industry Exhibition held in Kielce.
The first unit, which is intended for international military use, is
expected to be ready in 2010.

Supersonic commercial transport aircraft concepts for 2018 and beyond are the subject of a NASA-funded study to be carried out by Lockheed Martin.

Onboard Delivery) aircraft. It is now using 35 aging C-2s [...] Since
the navy has agreed to buy 48 V-22 tilt rotor aircraft, but has yet to
decide what it would do with them, the COD mission seems like a
suitable job. Both aircraft weigh the same (about 25 tons).
key improvements being planned for the S-92 helicopter are:
•Increased maximum gross weight from 26,500 pounds to above 27,000 pounds.

On Sept 11/09, L-3 Communications Geneva Aerospace of Carrollton, TX
received a not-to-exceed $250 million indefinite-delivery/
indefinite-quantity contract for U.S. Special Operations Command's
Expeditionary Unmanned Aircraft System. The competed contract is for 1
year with 4 option years, with a minimum of $5 million and orders to
be issued as desired (H92222-09-D-0051). That minimum was met
immediately in the initial $6.6 million delivery order.
L-3 is not known as a UAV maker; instead, Geneva Aero is best known as
a maker of key flight and datalink systems for use in UAVs. The firm
is expanding their reach, however, and L-3 representatives have now
confirmed that the SOCOM UAV is their Viking 400 model [PDF]. It's
larger than SOCOM's Puma AE mini-UAVs, and in a similar size class to
Aerovironment's RQ-7 Shadow.
