A350 is a study in lessons learned by Airbus on A380

http://www.flightglobal.com/blogs/flightblogger/2010/05/airbus-applies-lessons-learned.html

With schedule pressures mounting and a three month slide in commencement of final assembly of MSN001, Airbus is trying to avoid the mistakes of the A380 that it continues to pay for today with a slow production ramp pressured by a slowly recovering global economy, but more importantly a fragile supply chain and the complexity of customizing each airline's cabin.

Airbus outlines future A30X concepts

http://www.flightglobal.com/blogs/flightblogger/2010/05/airbus-outlined-future-a30x-co.html
While these two concepts have been seen before, what makes this slide notable is the detail that comes along with it. Airbus had always made a point when showing these renderings that they were merely artistic interpretations of possible configurations, however at the technical briefings, they began to discuss these designs with a bit more conviction as potential options for A30X.

http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2010/05/12/341885/airbus-details-a30x-thinking-dismisses-boeing-all-new-airplane.html
With a service-entry date envisaged at least 15 years from now, the A30X would incorporate "breakthrough technologies" in powerplants, materials, aerodynamics and flightdecks, says Ian Dawkins, who is senior vice-president strategy and future programmes.

Miniature UAV makes maiden flight in NFL stadium

In a stadium usually set aside for NFL players and championships, the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis recently became a flight test center with a very unique flying object that didn’t look anything like a football.

Miniature but mission-ready, a Boeing-built small unmanned aircraft system takes flight in the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis as part of a test for the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory. Boeing design engineer Jim Greenwood launches the flight.

Standing where the 50-yard line usually separates linebackers and offensive linemen, Boeing Research & Technology (BR&T) design engineer Jim Greenwood carefully raised a light gray small unmanned aircraft system (SUAS) over his head with its propeller spinning. Like a quarterback making a pass, he launched the five-pound airplane, named RM-1, short for “Rapid Manufacturing,” on its history-making flight about 60 feet above the dome’s field.

In reality, the Feb. 24 six-minute journey lifted off eight months earlier with a letter from the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio.
“They called for a white paper on an unmanned vehicle that could have a defined payload mission and be designed, manufactured and built cost efficiently in less than four weeks,” said Mike Hayes, a BR&T design engineer. “We didn’t want to just deliver a piece of paper at the end of eight months so we told them upfront we were going to give them an airplane, and we were also going to try and fly that airplane.”

Ultimately, the Air Force Special Operations Command would like to use these ultra-portable, highly maneuverable and low cost unmanned aircraft for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions. Mobility and ease of use in the field are attributes the Air Force is seeking in these types of futuristic unmanned airborne systems.

For this project, the Boeing team used direct digital rapid manufacturing techniques, which made it possible to manufacture thermo-plastic parts without using any tools. The team transformed 3-D computer generated schematic drawings into lightweight carbon-composite aircraft parts.

“We would actually design a part during the day and build it at night,” said Hayes. “The parts all had to measure up to our rigid standards of integrity.”

The test aircraft is designed to hold a small camera that the team purchased at a local store. When broken down for shipping the platform can fit into an aluminum case the size of a small suitcase.

Mark DiPadua, a senior manufacturing engineer with the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory who witnessed the flight test, said this project is unique.

“This is going to provide the U.S. Air Force with the opportunity to design an SUAS around a specific payload and mission requirement, and we’ll be able to do it affordably and very quickly,” said DiPadua. “Situational awareness and information in the battlefield is the key component of mission success.”

Final approach
Choosing the St. Louis Edward Jones Dome as a test flight site was no accident. Rather than waiting months for availability and paying the potentially high cost of travel and lodging for the Boeing group at a government flight test facility, the BR&T team called officials at the St. Louis sports facility.

“We were really able to reduce a lot of the risks and costs by flying the aircraft in the private, enclosed dome,” said Peter Drain, a BR&T flight operations official. “We didn’t have to worry about Federal Aviation Administration air space limitations since our test essentially became a ground test in the enclosed stadium.”

Drain estimated using the St. Louis location also saved about $40,000 in travel expenses for the Boeing team and its Air Force partner since the dome is only a short drive from Boeing Defense, Space & Security headquarters where the RM-1 was designed and first assembled.
These tests were a lot more than just witnessing the solid performance and prowess of the airplane, DiPadua said, noting the Boeing team’s commitment and drive.

“Boeing has been a very professional partner,” said DiPadua following the flight test. “On time and on schedule, and in this case going beyond what we asked for in our initial request, the BR&T team brought the aircraft from paper to flight test in just four weeks.”

The swift and streamlined process “used in designing and building this airplane is going to be something that interests the Air Force to a great extent, and it may one day save the lives of countless warfighters on missions of peace around the world,” he added.

The final moments before landing were tense as the RM-1 banked over rows of stadium seating and lined up on its final approach to the cement floor of the dome. Boeing engineer Daniel Sundman cradled the remote controller in his hand and used the joystick to gently guide the aircraft’s battery-powered engine and bring the tiny vehicle closer to the ground. In a matter of minutes, the test was complete.

The unmanned aircraft, which has no landing gear, touched down on the smooth flooring and slid about 20 feet to a full stop. You could almost hear the crowd go wild.

La ceniza que aguanta un avión

"AVOID, AVOID, AVOID". Evítelo. En mayúsculas y por tres veces. Cualquier cantidad.

Spirit Airlines installs pre-reclined seats

http://www.usatoday.com/travel/flights/2010-05-11-businesstravel11_ST_N.htm?csp=34travel

When you're 30,000 feet in the air, sitting three deep, every inch of space counts. So David Bennett would prefer the passenger in front of him not invade his space by reclining his seat.

"That seat coming back disrupts any ability to eat and read," says Bennett, 59, a jail consultant from Park City, Utah. "As difficult as travel is nowadays, give me my space."

Spirit Airlines, the low-cost carrier that soon will charge passengers for stowing carry-on bags in overhead bins, is now installing seats that can't move backward or forward on some of its aircraft.

The "pre-reclined" seats — they lean back 3 inches — are already on the airline's two AirbusA320 jets, and it will outfit two more by the end of this year, the airline says.

Boeing unveils UAV Phantom Ray Demonstrator

The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] today unveiled the fighter-sized Phantom Ray unmanned airborne system, a test bed for advanced technologies.

"We are on a fast track, and first flight is in sight," said Darryl Davis, president of Boeing Phantom Works. "Phantom Ray is on schedule to fly in December, about two years after this project began. This is a tremendous accomplishment for Boeing and the Phantom Ray team."

Phantom Ray is scheduled to begin taxi tests this summer. The first flight in December will be followed by up to nine additional flights over approximately six months. Phantom Ray is designed to support potential missions that may include intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; suppression of enemy air defenses; electronic attack; strike; and autonomous aerial refueling.

"The initial flights will take Phantom Ray through its paces for the flight test profile. Beyond that, the missions and systems tested will be determined by future warfighter needs," said Craig Brown, Phantom Ray program manager for Boeing.

Phantom Ray, which evolved from the X-45C program, is one of several programs in the Phantom Works division of Boeing Defense, Space & Security. Phantom Works uses rapid prototyping initiatives to design, develop and build advanced aircraft and then demonstrate their capabilities.

Key Phantom Ray suppliers include General Electric-Aviation (propulsion and power distribution), Honeywell (brake system), Woodward-HRT (flight control actuation system), Crane Hydro-Aire (brake controls) and Heroux-Devtek (landing gear).

Combining Physical and Virtual Mock-Ups: EADS Innovation Works Presents a Mixed Reality Application for the Aviation Industry

Munich, 06 May 2010

At RTT Excite 2010, Europe's major platform for professional high end visualisation, EADS Innovation Works is presenting a Mixed Reality based visualisation system applicable to marketing, manufacturing and maintenance purposes of commercial aircraft. Mixed Reality uses a mobile display device to view directly into the digital mock-up (DMU) simply by moving through the real aircraft and mixing the real environment with the view of the virtual aircraft model. The display device, typically a tablet PC or the iPhone is used as a window into the DMU. This is done using tracking technologies allowing to geo-localize the tablet PC with respect to the aircraft. RTT Excite 2010 is taking place in Munich on May 6 and 7.

To communicate the value of a future product such as a commercial aircraft, full-scale cabin mock-ups are built, which reflect new design concepts and future visions. The high standards for a handcrafted mock-up result in a high cost and limited flexibility in terms of variants and the presentation of different concepts. While the EADS Innovation Works advanced design and visualisation team is working on cabin interiors, lower deck crew rest areas, catering facilities, lavatories, they are also developing Mixed Reality tools to enhance the flexibility and the marketing value of physical mock-ups. This visualization technology allows a user to see virtual information added to reality in real time, using the spatial relationship between the virtual model and the real environment.

Once deployed, Mixed Reality technology enables a mock-up to be enriched by adding and changing components and designs without additional expenses. For a demonstration, an optical tracking system is set up in a cabin mock-up for the visualization on an iPhone screen. When the user is holding the phone towards the cabin interior, a see-through view is created where the screen covers part of the user's field of view. The visualization can show, for example, different colour variations or additional interior furnishings, which are "virtually" overlaid on the physical mock-up. In addition to developing industrial design features, the Mixed Reality tool can be used to assess cabin lighting scenarios, the visibility of emergency placards and lights and the look of different surface textures. A wide range of other engineering issues can be addressed with the tool, such as cockpit layouts, systems configurations and ergonomics. An example is the possibility to display the complex wiring within the aircraft cabin using an X-Ray like view through the cabin structure and filtering the content regarding the specific interest of the current user or maintenance worker.

EADS is a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services. In 2009, the Group - comprising Airbus, Eurocopter, EADS Astrium and EADS Defence & Security – generated revenues of € 42.8 billion and employed a workforce of more than 119,000.

First torpedo launched from C295

Airbus Military successfully conducted the first torpedo launch from one of its C295 Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA).

This represents an important milestone in the development of the antisubmarine version of the C295 MPA. It is also a significant entry for Airbus Military into the market of Anti Submarine Warfare (ASW) aircraft, currently dominated by veteran aircraft such as the P-3 Orion and the Atlantique.

The C295 MPA/ASW includes two under-wing pylons for the installation of torpedoes and other external loads. It also incorporates a Store Management System (SMS), integrated with the Airbus Military Fully Integrated Tactical System (FITS), to control the deployment of sonobuoys for submarine detection and torpedoes.

The C295 MPA has a flight endurance of over 11 hours, and it is used for a wide variety of missions: Search and Rescue (SAR), control of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), law enforcement, marine pollution detection, as well as defence missions. The C295 platform, a multi-mission short / medium range tactical transport aircraft, offers high manoeuvrability and excellent qualities for low-altitude flying. In addition, it has been widely tested in all kinds of aerial deployments: launch of chains of SAR rafts, emergency equipment and parachutists.

With this new version, Airbus Military increases the capabilities offered by its surveillance aircraft family.

To date, a total of 82 C295s have been sold to 12 operators, and nine countries have contracted 47 CN235/C295s MPA, which demonstrates the capabilities and effectiveness of Airbus Military platforms for maritime patrol missions. Airbus Military has sold more than 800 C295/CN235/C212s to more than 120 customers.

Delivery of RAAF Air Tanker Support Equipment to Begin

Preparations have begun to deliver thousands of items of tooling and spare parts from Europe to Australia to support the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) new fleet of Airbus Military A330 Multi-Role Tanker-Transport (MRTT) air-to-air refuelling tankers.

Madrid, 10 May 2010

As part of the Commonwealth's AIR 5402 acquisition process under which Airbus Military is providing the RAAF with five such aircraft, designated by the air force as KC-30A MRTT, some 4,500 individual components - 500 units of Ground Support and Test equipment and 4,000 spares - will be delivered to 33 Squadron at RAAF Amberley, in Queensland, Australia, over the next three months.

The equipment will be needed when the first A330 MRTT enters squadron service at Amberley towards the end of the year.

Prime Contractor, Qantas Defence Services (QDS), and Airbus Military have signed a Through Life Support (TLS) Contract under which Airbus, through QDS, will ensure ongoing maintenance support to the A330 MRTT fleet over the next 22 years.

The signing was attended by the Chief Executive of Airbus Military, Mr. Domingo Urena, who had travelled from Spain for the occasion. Congratulating the parties, Mr. Domingo said: "Qantas and Airbus Military are the ideal team to deliver the level of services that our customer requires."

As Prime Contractor, Qantas Defence Services will base some 50 engineering support personnel at RAAF Amberley to manage the Through Life Support programme. In its Design and Maintenance Support role, Airbus Military will provide QDS with Engineering, Logistics, Technical Data, Supply and Training support services. It will also assign two Field Service Representatives to 33 Squadron for three years to ensure a smooth entry into service.

The Through Life Support agreement also provides for future contracts to ensure additional support for the military aspects of the fleet, specifically Deep Maintenance, consolidating and expanding Airbus Military's presence and role in Brisbane.

Australia has ordered five KC-30A MRTTs. By the end of the year two of these aircraft will have been delivered to the Royal Australian Air Force. Conversion of a third tanker-transport is underway at the Qantas Conversion Centre, Brisbane Airport.

To date, a total of 28 A330 Multi-Role Tanker-Transports have been ordered by four customers – Australia, Saudia Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom. In addition to its air-to-air refuelling role, the MRTT can also be used as a pure transport aircraft able to carry some 300 troops, or a payload of up to 45 tonnes/99,000 lb.

http://plandevuelo.es/wordpress/archives/318

http://www.diariodesevilla.es/article/economia/696256/corazon/industrial/alestis.html

Controladora.

Yo no me pago a mí misma.

Laser for big and small airplanes

Laser installed in B-1 Lancer bomb-bay
More has emerged on the US Air Force Research Laboratory's Electric Laser on Large Aircraft (ELLA) program and, as anticipated, it's an effort to fit DARPA's Hellads laser into the weapons bay of a B-1B bomber to flight-test a high-power electric laser against tactical targets.

General Atomics and Textron Systems are developing rival 150kW lasers under Hellads, with the goal of demonstrating a laser weapon system weighing less than 5kg/kW - substantially smaller and lighter than any previous airborne laser. Lockheed Martin is designing the laser weapon system module (LWSM), including power, cooling and beam director

Boeing Begins Assembly of 1st 747-8 intercontinental

EVERETT, Wash., May 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) today announced it began assembly of the first 747-8 Intercontinental at the factory in Everett, Wash. Late this week, mechanics took the first step in major assembly for the new airplane by loading its wing panels and spars in the assembly tools. The spar is the internal support structure that runs through the full length of the wing.

"This milestone symbolizes the dedication, focus and hard work that our team, suppliers and customers have invested in designing this wonderful airplane," said Mo Yahyavi, vice president and general manager of the 747 program, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "The 747-8 Intercontinental will provide our customers with increased levels of passenger comfort, greatly improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions and noise."

Deutsche Lufthansa AG was the first airline to order the new, fuel-efficient passenger airplane, contracting for 20 747-8 Intercontinentals, with purchase rights for an additional 20. "We are very pleased to see that the production on the 747-8 Intercontinental has begun," said Nico Buchholz, senior vice president, Corporate Fleet of Deutsche Lufthansa AG. "We are looking forward to welcoming the aircraft in our fleet as it is a component of Lufthansa's strategy to modernize its fleet and increase environmental stewardship. The 747-8 shows our clear commitment to customer orientation."

The new 747-8 Intercontinental is stretched 18.3 feet (5.6 m) from the 747-400 to provide 467 seats -- 51 more than its predecessor -- in a three-class configuration. GEnx-2B engines and a new wing design provide airlines a quieter, more fuel-efficient airplane. The 747-8 is 16 percent more fuel efficient and creates a 30 percent smaller noise footprint than its predecessor. The 747-8 also provides nearly equivalent trip costs and 13 percent lower seat-mile costs than the 747-400, plus 26 percent greater cargo volume.

The 747-8 interior incorporates features from the 787 Dreamliner, including a new curved, upswept architecture that gives passengers a greater sense of space and comfort while adding more room for personal belongings. The architecture is accentuated by lighting technology that provides smooth transitions for a more restful flight.

The 747-8, which includes the 747-8 Intercontinental and the 747-8 Freighter, was launched in November 2005. Boeing has 108 orders for the 747-8 -- 32 for the 747-8 Intercontinental and 76 for the 747-8 Freighter. The first 747-8 Intercontinental is scheduled to deliver in late 2011.

Boeing Press Release

Lufthhansa and Boeing Celebrate 50 Years of colaboration

From the Boeing 707 to the Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental
HAMBURG, May 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Lufthansa entered the jet age with Boeing (NYSE: BA) 50 years ago. The airline and airplane manufacturer, both pre-eminent in the aviation industry, can look back on half a century of close and successful cooperation. Neither company shies away from taking the next step forward or from pushing technology and innovation to the next level. Together, Lufthansa and Boeing constantly work on even more efficient and environmentally progressive airplanes.

Lufthansa began scheduled jet service with a Boeing 707 on a direct flight from Hamburg to New York on March 17, 1960. With this jetliner, Boeing accomplished a quantum leap: Seating 168 passengers, the new airplane accommodated nearly twice as many passengers as the biggest propeller-driven airplane of the time. Traveling at a higher altitude, the 707 reduced flying time from Hamburg to New York by half, to around eight hours.

Since then, the airline business has continued to advance on many fronts. New technologies and materials have made flying even safer and more efficient. Passenger comfort has risen to unprecedented levels. Fuel consumption has been reduced by more than 70 per cent since the 1970s. And for the future, the air transport industry continues to develop new design criteria, then evaluate and implement them.

Boeing and Lufthansa are taking their successful cooperation and shared commitment to innovation a major step forward with the introduction of the 747-8 Intercontinental. Lufthansa will soon be welcoming the latest Boeing model into its fleet. The airline placed orders with Boeing for a total of 20 747-8 Intercontinentals. The new 747-8 is cleaner, quieter and more fuel efficient than its predecessor, the 747-400, and adopts the interior cabin architecture and lighting technologies inspired by the 787 Dreamliner.
