El acto incluye una conferencia sobre los ensayos en vuelo del A400M con un ponente de auténtico lujo: 'el otro' Fernando Alonso, es decir, no el que pilota un Fórmula 1, sino el que pilota toda la organización de ensayos y operaciones en vuelo en Airbus a nivel internacional.

Only a month into the Australian government's competition for new maritime helicopters and still a year away from a contract award, an interesting twist has been introduced into the battle between the Sikorsky/Lockheed Martin MH-60R and the Eurocopter NH-90.

According to reports in the Australian press, the Australian government hid for 28 days the fact that it had to ground its first Eurocopter NH-90s after an aircraft suffered a catastrophic engine failure and had to limp back to base on a single engine.

X51A will be tested on may 25

The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] announced today that the X-51A WaveRider will make its first hypersonic flight test attempt from Edwards Air Force Base on Tuesday, May 25. The unmanned aerial vehicle will be released from a B-52 bomber off the southern California coast.

The X-51A is expected to fly autonomously for five minutes -- powered by a supersonic combustion ramjet (scramjet) motor -- accelerate to about Mach 6 and transmit large amounts of data to ground stations before it splashes down into the Pacific and breaks up, as planned. There are no plans to recover the flight test vehicle, one of four built.

"In those 300 seconds, we hope to learn more about hypersonic flight with a practical scramjet engine than all previous flight tests combined," said Charlie Brink, X-51A program manager with the Air Force Research Laboratory's Propulsion Directorate at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The longest previous hypersonic scramjet flight test, performed by a NASA X-43 in 2004, was faster, but lasted only about 10 seconds and used less logistically supportable hydrogen fuel.

The X-51A program is a collaborative effort of the Air Force Research Laboratory and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, with industry partners The Boeing Company and Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne.

The May 25 attempt will be the only hypersonic flight attempt this fiscal year, a change from the original test plan, which was to fly once in December 2009 and three more times in 2010. A combination of factors, including high demand for flight-test and range assets such as the B-52, contributed to the pause.

"This is an experimental X-plane and it's a complicated test. We knew the original schedule was aggressive and we would need to be flexible," said Brink. "It's also expensive to keep a staff of engineers and support staff at the ready and then not be able to fly when supporting assets aren't available. So we elected to make only one hypersonic try this spring and then pause for a few months to conserve funding."

Alex Lopez, Boeing vice president of Advanced Network & Space Systems, said the X-51A program will pave the way to hypersonic weapons and future access to space.

"This is been a major team effort for the past seven years," said Lopez. "If the test flight meets even a subset of our expectations, the leap in engine technology will be the equivalent to the post-World War II leap from propellers to jet engines. It will be a historic event."

Sikorsky reports that its X2 advancing blade concept technology demonstrator has achieved 168kt (311km/h) forward speed, putting the dual counter-rotating pusher-prop compound beyond the typical maximum speed for traditional helicopters and outside the reach of the company's S-76 chase vehicle's 155kt capability.

Airbus hace entrega del primer A380 a Lufthansa

Lufthansa ha recibido su primer avión A380 de los 15 que tiene encargados. Otros tres aviones más se unirán a la flota a lo largo de 2010. Lufthansa empleará su nuevo buque insignia en las rutas a Tokio, Beijing y Johannesburgo.

Durante la ceremonia de entrega en Hamburgo, Lufthansa desveló su nueva cabina de Primera clase con ocho amplios asientos en la cabina superior, equipada, también, con 98 asientos de clase Business. La espaciosa cabina principal está configurada con 420 asientos de clase Económica, que ofrecen una sensación única de confort y espacio. El A380 de Lufthansa está equipado con motores Trent 900 de Rolls-Royce.

"Con el A380, Lufthansa recibe hoy su nuevo buque insignia. El A380 no sólo es respetuoso con el medio ambiente, ahorrando el 20 por ciento de combustible. Además, por ser excepcionalmente silencioso, será el avión mejor recibido en metrópolis como Londres, Nueva York, Tokio y, por supuesto, en el aeropuerto de Fráncfort – el hub de Lufthansa. Mientras que los pasajeros van a disfrutar de mucho más espacio en todas las clases y un mayor confort de cabina, la compañía se va a beneficiar de la eficiencia sin precedentes que ofrece el A380", comentó el Presidente y CEO de Airbus, Tom Enders. "Doy las gracias a Lufthansa por su excelente cooperación durante el diseño y el proceso de certificación del A380".

Desde el comienzo del programa del A380, Lufthansa y Airbus han trabajado estrechamente en el diseño del avión hasta su certificación. Entre 2005 y 2010, el A380 se sometió a varias pruebas de compatibilidad en la base de Lufthansa, en Fráncfort. En las pruebas de los simulacros de evacuación, las tripulaciones de cabina evacuaron con éxito a 873 personas en 78 segundos. Lufthansa fue, también, un socio fundamental durante los primeros vuelos "virtuales" y en los primeros vuelos de prueba de larga distancia reales.

"Los pasajeros van a vivir una experiencia de vuelo muy especial a bordo del A380", manifestó Wolfgang Mayrhuber, Consejero y CEO de Deutsche Lufthansa, durante la entrega. "En colaboración con Airbus, hemos desarrollado muchas soluciones técnicas en el diseño de cabina y mobiliario, que son una primicia mundial. Nuestras innovaciones en los sistemas de aire y luz de cabina, aislamiento sonoro y sistemas de entretenimiento a bordo hacen del A380 un avión único. Lufthansa y Airbus tienen una larga historia de cooperación. En 1976, Lufthansa recibió el primer Airbus A300B4. Con un total de 274 pedidos, Lufthansa es, actualmente, la primera aerolínea cliente de Airbus. Casi todos los modelos de la familia de Airbus están representados en la actual flota de 180 aviones Airbus de la compañía.

La eficiencia del A380 en el consumo de combustible es incomparable, con menos de tres litros por cada 100 kilómetros y pasajero. Gracias a sus excelentes prestaciones aerodinámicas, el A380 cumple los límites de ruido más estrictos, que lo convierten en el avión más silencioso en la actualidad. El nuevo avión de doble cabina genera sólo la mitad de ruido en el despegue y aterrizaje que el anterior avión de pasajeros de gran tamaño. El A380 también ofrece una mayor capacidad de pasajeros sin necesidad de incrementar el número de vuelos, siendo parte de la solución para un crecimiento sostenible en aeropuertos muy congestionados.

La eficiente actuación del avión y la tecnología líder producen una mayor flexibilidad operacional con unos resultados económicos excelentes. Tiene un alcance de 15.000 km / 8.300 millas náuticas y un coste asiento/milla un 24 por ciento más económico que su competidor más cercano.

Lufthansa se convierte en la quinta aerolínea en introducir el A380. La entrega de hoy señala el Airbus A380 número 28 que opera en la red de rutas mundiales de aerolíneas líderes. La actual flota del A380 conecta 21 importantes rutas internacionales en cinco continentes. 17 aeropuertos internacionales principales son ya destinos regulares del A380.

En conjunto, la flota del A380 ha alcanzado ya un total de más de 130.000 horas de vuelo en más de 14.000 vuelos comerciales. Más de 5 millones de pasajeros ya han tenido la oportunidad de disfrutar del vuelo en un A380.

Australian researchers are preparing to demonstrate by year-end an automated separation management system (ASMS) they hope will allow manned and unmanned aircraft to share large and complex regions of airspace.

Reece Clothier of the Australian Research Centre for Aerospace Automation (ARCAA) says ASMS flight-testing at Kingaroy in Queensland so far indicated that "the system is capable of handling far more complicated scenarios than we initially expected".

The D double bubble design uses long, skinny wings, a small tail and - hence the name - replaces the traditional cylindrical fuselage with a two partial cylinders placed side-by-side. The engines sit at the rear of the fuselage rather than on the wing to make use of a technique called Boundary Layer Ingestion (BLI). This approach sees slower moving air from the wake of the fuselage enter the engines, resulting in less fuel consumption for the same amount of thrust. The downside is slower speeds and more stress on the engine.

The result is a plane that travels 10 percent slower than the Boeing 737 it is designed to replace, but according to lead designer of the D series Mark Drela, the longer flight times would be partially mitigated by the ability to load and unload the plane faster. Another advantage is that it could also be used with current airport infrastructure.

Pilotos ANA: primera tripulación de una aerolínea en pilotar el Boeing 787 Dreamliner

SEATTLE, 13 de mayo de 2010 – Boeing y dos pilotos de ANA (All Nippon Airways) llevaron a cabo un vuelo del Boeing 787 Dreamliner el pasado miércoles, convirtiéndose en los primeros pilotos de una aerolínea en pilotar un 787.  El avión es el primero de los seis aviones que participan en los  vuelos de pruebas. El vuelo de dos horas y cuarenta minutos se realizó sobre el estado de Washington.

Los pilotos que se pusieron a los mandos del 787 por primera vez eran el Comandante. Masayuki Ishii, Director de Planificación pre-operaciones del 787, y el Comandante Masami Tsukamoto, Gerente de pre-operaciones de pilotos 787, ambos pertenecientes a la aerolínea japonesa ANA. Abordo se encontraban el  Comandante. Mike Carriker, Jefe de Pilotos de Prueba del Boeing 787 y el Comandante  Christine Walsh y Scott Fancher, Vicepresidente y Director General del Programa 787, Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

"El vuelo fue una demostración comercial, que sirvió para que los pilotos jefes de nuestro cliente de lanzamiento evaluasen el 787," explicó Fancher. "Estamos muy orgullosos de tener a ANA abordo  y poder así demostrar el gran avión desarrollado por  los hombres y mujeres de Boeing." 

El vuelo se llevó a cabo bajo un certificado de aeronavegabilidad especial otorgado por la autoridad aeronáutica estadounidense  (FAA). 

El programa 787 se lanzó en abril 2004 con un pedido récord de 50 787 por parte de ANA. ANA, que ha jugado un papel muy activo  como cliente de lanzamiento, espera recibir su primer 787 en el cuarto trimestre de 2010.

Durante el vuelo, ambos pilotos realizaron múltiples despegues y aterrizajes, junto con otras maniobras, lo que permitió comprobar las prestaciones del avión. Los pilotos también tuvieron oportunidad de experimentar otros aspectos de la cabina de mando del 787, incluyendo mayores pantallas de visualización, dos dispositivos head-up y dos maletas de vuelo electrónicas.

"Fue una experiencia fantástica e increíble," declaró el Comandante. Ishii. "A los pasajeros de ANA les espera una experiencia increíble cuando vuelen en el 787," afirmó.

"El vuelo fue fantástico," aseguró el comandante. Tsukamoto. "He esperado este día desde que ANA hizo su  pedido  y hoy mi sueño se ha hecho realidad."

Durante el vuelo, Carriker explicó a los pilotos de ANA, ambos con habilitación de tipo del Boeing 777, las similitudes y diferencias entre los dos aviones. Se espera que la autoridad aeronáutica autorice un curso de diferencias de tan solo 5 días que permita habilitar a los pilotos 777 en el 787.

 Clientes en todo el mundo han encargado 860 787 desde el lanzamiento del programa en abril 2004, convirtiendo el Dreamliner en el nuevo reactor comercial más vendido de la historia.

Boeing increases 737 production rate

SEATTLE, May 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) today announced that it will increase production rates on the Next-Generation 737 program to 34 airplanes per month in early 2012. The planned rate increase is aimed at satisfying continued strong demand for the Next-Generation 737. In addition, the company continues to study further potential 737 rate increases, given continued customer demand.

"With over 5,200 sold to date, the Next-Generation 737 is the workhorse in our customers' fleets around the world," said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Jim Albaugh. "Even through the global economic downturn, our diverse 737 backlog has remained very strong. Increasing the 737 production rate is the right thing to do to meet the growth and fleet replacement needs of our customers."

The current production rate on the 737 program is 31.5 airplanes per month. Suppliers for the 737 program are prepared to support the rate increase. The production rate decision is not expected to have a material impact on 2010 financial results.

"The global economy continues to recover this year and we believe that airlines will return to profitability in 2011," said Randy Tinseth, vice president of Marketing for Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "We believe that there will be an increased demand for airplanes – especially in the market served by the Next-Generation 737 – in 2012 and beyond."

With more than 2,000 unfilled orders from more than 80 customers around the world, the Next-Generation 737 is the newest and most technologically advanced airplane in its class. Airfinance Journal's investors' and operators' poll consistently ranks the Next-Generation 737 as the most preferred airplane in its class due to its wide market base, superior efficiency and lowest operating costs.

Lockheed Gives a Peek at New JSF Stealth Material Concept

It is called "fiber mat," and Tom Burbage, executive vice president of F-35 program integration for Lockheed Martin says it is "the single, biggest technological breakthrough we've had on this program."

He says that a new process to blend stealth qualities into composite material avoided the need for stealthy appliqués and coatings. Using a new process, Lockheed officials are curing the stealthy, fiber mat substance into the composite skin of the aircraft, according to Burbage. It "makes this airplane extremely rugged. You literally have to damage the airplane to reduce the signature," he said in an interview with Aviation Week in Fort Worth. This top-fiber mat surface takes the place of metallic paint that was used on earlier stealthy aircraft designs.

Airbus Military has for the first time demonstrated in flight "buddy" refuelling between two A330 MRTT aircraft.

To-date three such flights have been performed, the latest one being part of the certification flight trials. This type of operation further illustrates the capability of the new-generation A330 MRTT tanker to refuel any kind of large receiver, even wide-body aircraft like another A330 MRTT or receiver aircraft with complex aerodynamics such as the E-3 AWACS tested in February. It also demonstrates the capability of the aircraft as a receiver and means that the A330 MRTT is now both the largest aircraft to have refuelled an A330 MRTT and the largest to have received fuel from it.




A330 MRTT refuels another A330 MRTT


The two aircraft used for these flight trials were the first two A330 MRTTs built for the Royal Australian Air Force. They are both now being used in the final stages of the certification programme due for completion in the next months.

During the flights, performed over the Gulf of Cadiz in southern Spain, fuel was passed from the refuelling aircraft´s Aerial Refuelling Boom System (ARBS) to the receiving aircraft´s Universal Aerial Refuelling Receptacle Slipway Installation (UARRSI).

Programme director Airbus Military Derivatives, Antonio Caramazana, said: "This latest flight demonstrates the ability of the A330 MRTT to refuel a true widebody aircraft and to conduct buddy-buddy refuelling between two tankers, which is a vital enabler for even longer range deployments."

El Ejército del Aire busca ingenieros aeronáuticos

Study: Aviation Maintenance Industry Is Major Employer

The Aeronautical Repair Station Association (ARSA) has for the first time provided a snapshot of the industry's state-by-state footprint. The study, prepared by AeroStrategy, based on 2009 government and industry data, pegs the U.S. civil aviation maintenance workforce at 274,634. The industry's direct and indirect impact on the U.S. economy is $39 billion.

Firmado el convenio para el uso del emulador de vuelo




El Jefe de Estado Mayor del Ejército del Aire, José Jiménez Ruiz, el director de Comunicación y Relaciones Externas de El Corte Inglés, Diego Copado Fernández, y la directora Corporativa de Comunicación y Gabinete de Presidencia de Repsol YPF, Begoña Elices García, han firmado, ayer 11 de mayo, en el Acuartelamiento Aéreo Getafe del Ejército del Aire, el convenio para la utilización del nuevo emulador de vuelo.


Se trata de un emulador móvil cuya tecnología tiene sus orígenes en la simulación del sector aeroespacial. Mediante la proyección de una filmación de gran impacto visual a la que se asocia el movimiento de la cápsula se pretende acercar a la población las sensaciones de los pilotos dentro de las cabinas de diversas aeronaves. En el interior de la cápsula los pasajeros disponen de asientos diseñados ergonómicamente que proporcionan una vista sin obstáculos de la pantalla así como aire acondicionado.


Este emulador se irá desplazando por toda la geografía española para dar a conocer entre los ciudadanos, especialmente entre la juventud, la sensación del vuelo. Está previsto su presentación al público a lo largo de las próximas semanas.


El Ejército del Aire, con el fin de dar a conocer a la sociedad española la cultura, valores y actuación propia ha impulsado la colaboración con entidades públicas y privadas interesadas en la promoción y difusión de tales fines.


Fruto de este impulso, se inició la colaboración con el Corte Inglés S.A. y REPSOL YPF S.A. para promover y, dichos valores a través del uso de un simulador de vuelo.


Del convenio firmado hoy se desprende que el Ejército del Aire es el encargado de proporcionar el material y personal necesario para asegurar la operación del citado simulador de vuelo.

Miniature UAV makes maiden flight in NFL stadium






In a stadium usually set aside for NFL players and championships, the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis recently became a flight test center with a very unique flying object that didn’t look anything like a football.


Miniature but mission-ready, a Boeing-built small unmanned aircraft system takes flight in the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis as part of a test for the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory. Boeing design engineer Jim Greenwood launches the flight.

Standing where the 50-yard line usually separates linebackers and offensive linemen, Boeing Research & Technology (BR&T) design engineer Jim Greenwood carefully raised a light gray small unmanned aircraft system (SUAS) over his head with its propeller spinning. Like a quarterback making a pass, he launched the five-pound airplane, named RM-1, short for “Rapid Manufacturing,” on its history-making flight about 60 feet above the dome’s field.

In reality, the Feb. 24 six-minute journey lifted off eight months earlier with a letter from the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio.
“They called for a white paper on an unmanned vehicle that could have a defined payload mission and be designed, manufactured and built cost efficiently in less than four weeks,” said Mike Hayes, a BR&T design engineer. “We didn’t want to just deliver a piece of paper at the end of eight months so we told them upfront we were going to give them an airplane, and we were also going to try and fly that airplane.”

Ultimately, the Air Force Special Operations Command would like to use these ultra-portable, highly maneuverable and low cost unmanned aircraft for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions. Mobility and ease of use in the field are attributes the Air Force is seeking in these types of futuristic unmanned airborne systems.

For this project, the Boeing team used direct digital rapid manufacturing techniques, which made it possible to manufacture thermo-plastic parts without using any tools. The team transformed 3-D computer generated schematic drawings into lightweight carbon-composite aircraft parts.


“We would actually design a part during the day and build it at night,” said Hayes. “The parts all had to measure up to our rigid standards of integrity.”

The test aircraft is designed to hold a small camera that the team purchased at a local store. When broken down for shipping the platform can fit into an aluminum case the size of a small suitcase.

Mark DiPadua, a senior manufacturing engineer with the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory who witnessed the flight test, said this project is unique.

“This is going to provide the U.S. Air Force with the opportunity to design an SUAS around a specific payload and mission requirement, and we’ll be able to do it affordably and very quickly,” said DiPadua. “Situational awareness and information in the battlefield is the key component of mission success.”

Final approach
Choosing the St. Louis Edward Jones Dome as a test flight site was no accident. Rather than waiting months for availability and paying the potentially high cost of travel and lodging for the Boeing group at a government flight test facility, the BR&T team called officials at the St. Louis sports facility.

“We were really able to reduce a lot of the risks and costs by flying the aircraft in the private, enclosed dome,” said Peter Drain, a BR&T flight operations official. “We didn’t have to worry about Federal Aviation Administration air space limitations since our test essentially became a ground test in the enclosed stadium.”

Drain estimated using the St. Louis location also saved about $40,000 in travel expenses for the Boeing team and its Air Force partner since the dome is only a short drive from Boeing Defense, Space & Security headquarters where the RM-1 was designed and first assembled.
These tests were a lot more than just witnessing the solid performance and prowess of the airplane, DiPadua said, noting the Boeing team’s commitment and drive.


“Boeing has been a very professional partner,” said DiPadua following the flight test. “On time and on schedule, and in this case going beyond what we asked for in our initial request, the BR&T team brought the aircraft from paper to flight test in just four weeks.”

The swift and streamlined process “used in designing and building this airplane is going to be something that interests the Air Force to a great extent, and it may one day save the lives of countless warfighters on missions of peace around the world,” he added.

The final moments before landing were tense as the RM-1 banked over rows of stadium seating and lined up on its final approach to the cement floor of the dome. Boeing engineer Daniel Sundman cradled the remote controller in his hand and used the joystick to gently guide the aircraft’s battery-powered engine and bring the tiny vehicle closer to the ground. In a matter of minutes, the test was complete.

The unmanned aircraft, which has no landing gear, touched down on the smooth flooring and slid about 20 feet to a full stop. You could almost hear the crowd go wild.

La ceniza que aguanta un avión

Pero las aerolíneas se han rebelado ante las pérdidas causadas por la ceniza del volcán islandés, y sus fuertes presiones hicieron que los fabricantes de motores (General Electric, Pratt & Whitney y Rolls Royce) acordaran el 20 de abril con la Administración estadounidense que es aceptable volar con concentraciones de polvo volcánico de hasta dos miligramos por metro cúbico de aire y en ausencia de ceniza visible. El centro de vigilancia de volcanes (VAAC) de Londres alerta de concentraciones superiores a 0,2 miligramos, por eso los mapas de este organismo de la OACI y los de Eurocontrol difieren.

10 May 2010 8ak: On April 13, in the port city of Tianjin about 130- KM away from Beijing, China showed off its 4th Generation J-10 aircraft to military attaches of about 50 countries it could possibly export to. 9 days later as per Strategy page reports it was running to cover up the 2nd crash of the J-10 fighter that became public in the last two years. 

The 22 April crash became public because a senior colonel had died in the crash and the funeral became too big to keep the story hushed. The news report also claims that the design of the 200-odd J-10s produced has not worked out as desired by its developers. 

US Navy nears contract signing for STUAS/Tier II

Afriqiyah Airways flight 8U771 accident in Tripoli, Libya (ISSUE 2)

Airbus regrets to confirm that an Airbus A330-200 operated by Afriqiyah Airways was involved in an accident in Tripoli, Libya at 04:00 GMT, Wednesday 12th May. The aircraft was operating a scheduled service, Flight 8U771 from Johannesburg, South Africa to Tripoli, Libya.

The aircraft involved in the accident, registered as 5A-ONG, was MSN (Manufacturer Serial Number) 1024, delivered from the production line in September 2009. The aircraft had accumulated approximately 1600 flight hours in some 420 flights. It was powered by General Electric CF6-80E1 engines. At this time no further factual information is available.

Preliminary reports indicate that the aircraft crashed short of the runway threshold during approach. According to available information there were 93 passengers and 11 crew on board.

In line with ICAO Annex 13 international convention Airbus is dispatching a team of technical advisors to support the investigation authorities and the Bureau d’Enquêtes et d’Analyses (BEA) as accredited representative.

The Airbus A330-200 is a widebody, twin-engine aircraft, which typically carries 253 passengers in a three-class, twin-aisle cabin on medium to long range routes of up to 7,250 nautical miles (13,400km). The A330-200 was first delivered in April 1998.

The concerns and sympathy of the Airbus employees go to the families, friends and loved ones affected by the accident.

Para los próximos días 29 y 30 de Mayo la Fundación Aérea de la Comunidad Valenciana organiza, en el Aeródromo del Pinar, en la Playa de Castellón, el IV Encuentro de Aviones Históricos.
